  • An effective method, i.e., the solid atom method, is suggested to obtain the Coulomb interaction parameter, U, and the Hund exchange coupling constant, J, for use in the LDA+U calculation. The par~meters are obtained self-consistently during the LDA+U calculation. The method is applied to typical transition metal oxides and $MnB^{VI}(B^{VI}=S,Se,Te)$. The U values for the transition metal oxides have similar magnitude to previous calculations although they are obtained by a much simpler method. $MnB^{VI}s$ have been characterized as crossroads materials between charge transfer and band insulators by the LDA+U calculation.

  • Stability criterion and its calculation are the crucial issue in the application of sail-assisted ship. However, there is at present no specific criterion and computational methods for the stability of sail-assisted ship. Based on the stability requirements for seagoing ships, the stability criterion of the sail-assisted ships is suggested in this paper. Furthermore, how to calculate the parameters and determine some specific coefficients for the ship stability calculation, as well as how to redraw stability curve are also discussed in this paper. Finally, to give an illustration, the proposed method is applied on a sail assisted-ship model with comments and recommendations for improvement.

  • For optimization of a low-noise track system, rail vibration and noise radiation needs to be investigated. The main influencing parameters for the noise radiation and the quantitative results of every track system can be obtained using a calculation model of generation and radiation of railway noise. This kind of model includes contact modeling and the calculation model of the dynamic properties of the wheel and the rail. This study used a nonlinear wheel/rail interaction model in the time domain to investigate the excitation of the rolling noise. Wheel/rail response is determined by time integrating Green's function of the rail together with force impulses from the wheel/rail contact. This model and the results of the study can be used for supporting calculation with the conventional model by an addition of the contributions due to nonlinearities to the roughness spectrum.

  • The PID controller design and choosing PID parameters according to system response are proposed in this paper. Here PID controller is employed to control DC motor speed and Matlab program is used for calculation and simulation. Choosing PID parameters are demonstrated by several contrast experiments and a way for setting PID parameters values is discussed.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the design parameters and to develop the cooling and heating load prediction equations of office buildings. The building load calculation simulation was carried out using the DOE-2.1E program. The results of the simulation was used as a data for ANOVA and multiple regression analysis which could develop the load prediction equations.

  • Effect of Co substitution on crystal structures of two nickel silicides, NiSi and $NiSi_2$, is investigated by using an ab initio calculation. Relaxed NiSi and $NiSi_2$ structures are calculated and the calculated lattice parameters are in good agreement with experimentally determined lattice parameters within about 2%. A Co atom substitutes a Ni and Si site, respectively, to evaluate the preferable site between them. Co prefers Ni site to Si site in both NiSi and $NiSi_2$. The calculated total energy also indicates that the Co substitution to Ni site stabilizes both the NiSi and $NiSi_2$ structures. Co also prefers Ni site in $NiSi_2$ to that in NiSi, indicating that $NiSi_2$ becomes more stable than NiSi with Co substitution. As Co addition to NiSi improves its thermal stability experimentally, this indicates that the energy barrier between the two phases is high enough to prevent the phase transformation from NiSi to $NiSi_2$ up to high temperature.

  • This paper presents a conceptual design approach of air-cored synchronous machine with high temperature superconductor (HTS) field winding. With a given configuration of a target machine, boundary conditions are set in the cylindrical coordinate system and analytic field calculation is performed by solving a governing equation. To set proper boundary conditions, current distributions of the field winding and the armature winding are expressed by the Fourier expansion. Based on analytic magnetic field calculation results, key machine parameters are calculated: 1) inductance, 2) critical current of field winding, 3) weight, 4) HTS conductor consumption, and 5) efficiency. To investigate all potential design options, 6 sweeping parameters are determined to characterize the geometry of the machine and the parameter calculation process is performed for each design options. Among design options satisfying constraints including >80 % critical current margin and >95 % efficiency, in this paper, a first-cut design was selected in terms of overall machine weight and HTS conductor consumption to obtain a lightweight and economical design. The goal is to design a 5-MW machine by referring to the same capacity machine that was previously constructed by another group. Our design output is compared with finite element method (FEM) simulation to validate our design approach.

  • This paper analyzed the power loss of transformers considering the magnetic component. For this, each winding strategy and the effect of air gap between the ferrite core have been an important variable for optimal parameter calculation. Inductors are very well known design rules to devise, but the performance of the flyback converter as a function of transformer winding strategy has not been fully developed. The transformer analysis tool used was PExpert. The influence of the insulator thickness, effect of the air gap, how the window height and variation of the capacitive value effects the coil and insulator materials are some of parameters that have been analyzed in this work. The parameter analysis is calculated to a high frequency of 48[kHz]. Therefore, the final goal of this paper was to calculate and adjust the parameters according to the method of winding array and air gap minimizing the power loss.

  • Various typhoon data near Yongil Bay, Korea from 1961 to 1985 were collected with some critria and analyzed with the help of the computer. Introducing the pressure profile models and predicting the typhoon wind and wave fields, the 100-year design wave parameters were calculated. Additionally, the wave data at the southeast coast of Korea were statistically analyzed. The deep water wave climate of this bay indicated that Typhoon Brenda, 1985 had wave characteristics of 100-year return period, Typhoon model and storm surge model studies were made for this typhoon. These, including other design parameters, were introduced into the calculation of total design water depth.

  • This paper proposes a straightforward method of analyzing the operation characteristics for the capacitor run single-phase induction motor from the traditional equivalent circuit based on the revolving field theory. The proposed method consists of five procedures as follows: mechanical loss segregation, iron loss segregation and calculation of the equivalent circuit parameters, recalculation of parameters of the main winding side, calculation of the auxiliary winding magnetizing reactance and effective turn ratio, and analyzing the operation characteristics for this motor. When the characteristics are analyzed, the segregated mechanical and iron losses are considered as a loss resistance across input terminals of the equivalent circuit for the analysis. The validity of the proposed method is verified from the comparison between the computed results and the experimental ones for the operation characteristics.
