An empirical formula for estimating duration magnitude(MD)is determined by analyzing 619 epicentral distance-duration data set, obtained from earthquakes of 1989-1998 recorded at the KMA network. Based on two assumptions: 1) observed signal duration decreases with increasing epicentral distance, and 2) seismographs of KMA are set at low-gain and therefore inclusion of sensitivity correction term in the equation is not necessary, scaling predicted duration at epicenter to Tsuboi's local magnitude yielded the duration magnitude equation: MD =2.0292$\times$log$\tau$+0.00123Δ-1.4017 for 1/0$\leq$ML$\leq$5.0, where $\tau$is total signal duration(sec)and Δis epicentral distance(km). Event by event comparison of ML values against MD estimates for t152 events shows that for events having a same ML the difference in MD estimates reaches as high as 1.1 magnitude units. So, to test the usefulness of the duration magnitude equation, we have calculated ML-MD relations by which duration magnitude estimates are converted to local magnitudes ("predicted" ML, say) which are then compared with the directly determined local magnitude values. Except for events with stations where duration is anomalously reestimates(predicted ML) which are in an agreement within a 0.2 magnitude units with the corresponding ML values. Although this study could gain some insights into magnitudes of the past events, we still need to re-examine all the observables in order to obtain more reliable and precise information about magnitude and hypocenter location. So we will pursue a new local-magnitude scaling, as well as refinement of the duration magnitude equation, starting soon with re-reading the amplitudes-arrival time records of (and hence relocating) 250+earthquakes of 1979-present recorded at the KMA network. Thus, with more reliable and precise earthquake parameters determined we would better understand the recent seismicity and related tectonic process within and adjacent region to the Korean peninsula.peninsula.

A new prediction model is derived for the uplift capacity of suction caissons using a hybrid method coupling genetic programming (GP) and simulated annealing (SA), called GP/SA. The predictor variables included in the analysis are the aspect ratio of caisson, shear strength of clayey soil, load point of application, load inclination angle, soil permeability, and loading rate. The proposed model is developed based on well established and widely dispersed experimental results gathered from the literature. To verify the applicability of the proposed model, it is employed to estimate the uplift capacity of parts of the test results that are not included in the modeling process. Traditional GP and multiple regression analyses are performed to benchmark the derived model. The external validation of the GP/SA and GP models was further verified using several statistical criteria recommended by researchers. Contributions of the parameters affecting the uplift capacity are evaluated through a sensitivity analysis. A subsequent parametric analysis is carried out and the obtained trends are confirmed with some previous studies. Based on the results, the GP/SA-based solution is effectively capable of estimating the horizontal, vertical and inclined uplift capacity of suction caissons. Furthermore, the GP/SA model provides a better prediction performance than the GP, regression and different models found in the literature. The proposed simplified formulation can reliably be employed for the pre-design of suction caissons. It may be also used as a quick check on solutions developed by more time consuming and in-depth deterministic analyses.

In printing systems, the reliability of printed material depends on the ability of the toner film to remain adhered to the paper surface. In order to measure the strength between the toner film and the paper surface, a peel-off test is often performed. After conducting the test, the amount of toner film remaining on the paper is measured in order to determine the interfacial strength. The results of this test can be affected by many factors such as the peeling rate, weight of the roller used, and dwell time of tape. Sensitivity analysis was performed with respect to peeling rate, weight of roller and dwell time of tape at different levels. It was found that the interfacial strength increased with an increase in these main parameters. On the other hand, the trend with respect to the percentage of toner loss was different. Further, the interfacial strength and percentage of toner loss were significantly affected by the peeling rate.

Although the link between activity in the nuclei of galaxy and galactic mergers has been under scrutiny for several years, it is still unclear to what extent and for which populations of active galaxies merger-triggered activity is relevant. The environments of AGN allow an indirect probe of the past merger history and future merger probability of these systems, suffering less from sensitivity issues when extended to higher redshifts than traditional morphological studies of AGN host galaxies. Here we present results from our investigation of the environment of radio selected sources out to a redshift z=2. We employ the first data release J-band catalog of the new near-IR Infrared Medium-Deep Survey (IMS), 1.4 GHz radio data from the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-cm (FIRST) survey and a deep dedicated VLA survey of the VIMOS field, covering a combined total of 20 sq. degrees. At a flux limit of the combined radio catalog of 0.1 mJy, we probe over 8 orders of magnitude of radio luminosity. Using the second closest neighbor density parameters, we test whether active galaxies inhabit denser environments. We find evidence for a sub-population of radio-selected AGN that reside in significantly overdense environments at small scales, although we do not find significant overdensities for the bulk of our sample. We show that radio-AGN in the most underdense environments have vigorous ongoing star formation. We interpret these results in terms of the triggering and fuelling mechanism of radio-AGN.
At present the most popular turbulence models used for engineering solutions to flow problems are the $k-{\varepsilon}$ and Reynolds stress models. The shortcoming of these models based on the isotropic eddy viscosity concept and Reynolds averaging in flow fields of the type found in the field of Wind Engineering are well documented. In view of these shortcomings this paper presents the implementation of a non-linear model and its evaluation for flow around a building. Tests were undertaken using the classical bluff body shape, a surface mounted cube, with orientations both normal and skewed at $45^{\circ}$ to the incident wind. Full-scale investigations have been undertaken at the Silsoe Research Institute with a 6 m surface mounted cube and a fetch of roughness height equal to 0.01 m. All tests were originally undertaken for a number of turbulence models including the standard, RNG and MMK $k-{\varepsilon}$ models and the differential stress model. The sensitivity of the CFD results to a number of solver parameters was tested. The accuracy of the turbulence model used was deduced by comparison to the full-scale predicted roof and wake recirculation zone lengths. Mean values of the predicted pressure coefficients were used to further validate the turbulence models. Preliminary comparisons have also been made with available published experimental and large eddy simulation data. Initial investigations suggested that a suitable turbulence model should be able to model the anisotropy of turbulent flow such as the Reynolds stress model whilst maintaining the ease of use and computational stability of the two equations models. Therefore development work concentrated on non-linear quadratic and cubic expansions of the Boussinesq eddy viscosity assumption. Comparisons of these with models based on an isotropic assumption are presented along with comparisons with measured data.
The natural convection model of the consolidated system has been developed to make sure the removal of decay heat generated in the spent fuel for the loss of forced cooling accident. The numerical technique employed was based on the ADI scheme. The calculation of heat generation rate in the spent fuel was peformed by the ANS-79 decay heat model, and the nonuniform surface heat flux is assumed with a chopped sine curve for the conservative decay heat generation input. The sensitivity study was performed to examine the possibility of the pool bulk boiling by varying the various parameters, i.e. inter-fuel spacing ratio, heat generation power, and radius of the fuel rod. The application results of this model show that the natural circulation flow through compacted spent fuel bundles enables the pool temperature to control in a safe and effective manner, after the required cooling time. The corresponding acceptance criteria of the cooling time for rearranging the spent fuel rods were also found.

This paper is concerned with optimum design of a center-pillar assembly induced by the high-speed side impact of the vehicle. In order to simulate deformation behavior of the center-pillar assembly, simplified finite element model of the center-pillar and a moving deformable barrier are developed based on results of the crash analysis of a full vehicle model. In optimization of the deformation shape of the center-pillar, S-shaped deformation is targeted to guarantee reduction of the injury level of a driver dummy in the crash test. Tailor-welded blanks are adopted in the simplified center-pillar model to control the deformation shape of the center-pillar assembly. The thickness of each part which constitutes the simplified model is selected as a design parameter. The thickness of parts which have significant effect on the deformation mechanism are selected as design parameters with sensitivity analysis based on the design of experiment technique. The objective function is constructed so as to minimize the weight and lead to an S-mode deformation shape. The result shows that the simplified model can be utilized effectively for optimum design of the center-pillar members with remarkable saving of computing time.
Immense quantities of coal combustion by-products are produced every year, and only a small fraction of them are currently utilized. The purpose of this study is to investigate reused techniques of coal ash in the construction field, which may contribute to the savings of building materials and conservation of environment. From the results of the compressive strength test, the elastic modulus was experimentally proposed. Also, based on the three- point-bending test, the fracture parameters - notch sensitivity, fracture energy, and initial compliance were experimentally proposed. As a result, the strength and fracture characteristics were lower than those of concrete or mortar. Also, the study showed that the deflection at a fracture decreased as the age increased and as the notch depth rate decreased. However, it was judged that its use as a building material could be expected if further research is carried out.
This paper presents a hydraulic fracture propagation model to describe propagation more realistically. In propagating the hydraulic fractures, we have used two criteria: maximum tangential stress to determine the fracture initiation angle and whether a hydraulic fracture intersects a natural fracture. The model was validated for the parameters relevant to fracture propagation, such as initiation angle and crossing ability through natural fracture. In order to check whether a hydraulic fracture crosses a natural fracture, the model results on crossing state excellently matched with the experimental data. In the sensitivity analysis for direction of maximum horizontal stress, frictional coefficient of fracture interface, and natural fracture orientation, the results show that hydraulic fracture intersects natural fracture, and then, propagated suitably with theoretical results according to fracture interaction criterion. In comparison of this model against vertical fracture approach, it was ascertained that there are discrepancies in fracture connectivity and stimulated reservoir volume.

In this paper, we propose a load sharing scheme in distributed systems. In the proposed scheme, the state of each host is classified as a server or a source by its current load and, to prevent excessive state changes of each host, we used three threshold values for identifying the current state of each host. Based on the threshold values, some hosts, called brokers, manage the servers registered to them. The brokers, whose number is determined by the system utilization factor and the total number of hosts, support task migration processes from overloaded sources to lightly loaded servers. Also they can hand over the broker's role to another host when it is overloaded. Simulation studies were performed for examining the sensitivity of each system parameters such as threshold values, utilization factor, the number of hosts, and the number of brokers to the system performance indices including mean response time, mean queue length.
