  • In this study, the sanitization effects of ozone and UV against pathogens and ticks were studied. The results indicate that in environments mimicking that of households, the number of pathogens was reduced by $99.0\%$ and $99.0\%$ by ozone and UV light, respectively. In addition, virus counts were also reduced by $100\%$. Optimization of experimental parameters showed that, under appropriate application, ticks are also eradicated by ozone and UV light. The ticks were divided into two groups, with the first group being treated with ozone only and the latter with ozone and UV light. The results from these experiments showed that, although ozone alone reduces the vitality of the ticks, the survival rate of the ticks was significantly more reduced when the ticks were exposed simultaneously to ozone and UV.

  • Numerical analyses have been carried out in order to check the applicability of high-strength steel to a medium-sized steel bridge. Using the yield strength of steel, Average Daily Truck Traffic (ADTT), and fatigue grade of structural detail as analytical parameters, the minimum weight sections that satisfy the limit states of the AASHTO LRFD design specification were determined through an optimization scheme. Likewise, the effects of the number of girders and span length on the applicability of high-strength steel were evaluated. Results show that high-strength steel may be employed in the steel bridge, since steel weight decreases with increasing yield strength regardless of the fatigue effect. Nonetheless, appropriate countermeasures against fatigue should be determined since it is a major factor in the effective use of high-strength steel in steel bridges.

  • The experimental design and response surface methodologies haven been applied to the investigation of the chemical coagulation of livestock wastewater. The chemical coagulation reactions were mathematically described as a function of parameters raping mixing (rpm) of chemical coagulation ($X_1$), slow mixing (rpm) of chemical coagulation ($X_2$), $FeCl_3 $ concentration (mg/L) ($X_3$) and pH ($X_4$) being modeled by use of the central composite design. Empirical models were developed to describe relationship between the experimental variables and response. Statistical analysis indicates that three factors ($X_1$: raping mixing (rpm), $X_2$: slow mixing (rpm), $X_3$: $FeCl_3 $ concentration (mg/L) on the linear term (main effect), slow mixing (rpm) (${X_2}^2$) on the non-linear term (quadratic), and two factors ($X_1-X_3$, $X_2-X_3$) on the non-linear term (cross-product) had significant effects, respectively. The estimated ridge of maximum responses and optimal conditions for CODcr using canonical analysis was 87.44% ($X_1$: 229 rpm, $X_2$: 51 rpm, $X_3$: 877 mg/L, $X_4$: 4.3). To confirm this optimum condition, three additional experiments were performed and the mean CODcr removal (%) and concentration (mg/L) with a standard deviation of $87{\pm}1.2%$ ($576{\pm}34ppm$) were obtained.

  • This experimental design and response surface methodology (RSM) have been applied to the investigation of the electrocoagulation/flotation of dye wastewater. The electrocoagulation/flotation reactions were mathematically described as a function of parameters current (A), NaCl concentration (B), initial RhB concentration (C) and time (D) being modeled by use of the central composite design (CCD). The application of RSM using the CCD yielded the following regression equation, which is an empirical relationship between the RhB removal (%) and test variables in RhB removal (%) = $-300.42+129.21{\cdot}Current+46.99{\cdot}NaCl-0.11{\cdot}RhB-+43.71{\cdot}Time-5.67{\cdot}Current{\cdot}NaCl-3.18{\cdot}Current{\cdot}Time-2.41{\cdot}NaCl{\cdot}Time-19.79{\cdot}Current^2-2.27{\cdot}NaCl^2-1.59{\cdot}Time^2$. the model predictions agreed well with the experimentally observed result ($R^{2}=0.9728$). The estimated ridge of maximum response and optimal conditions for RhB removal (%) using canonical analysis was 99.4% (A: 1,77 A, NaCl concentration: 2.23 g/L, RhB concentration: 56.12 mg/L, Time: 9.98 min). To confirm this optimum condition, three additional experiments were performed and RhB removal (%) were within range of 86.87% (95% PI low)~111.93% (95% PI high) obtained.

  • In this study, a cantilevered energy harvester comprising piezoelectric fiber and epoxy composites was designed and analyzed electro-mechanically. In order to maximize the power of the cantilevered energy harvester, its exciting frequency was tuned to the first natural frequency of the beam. An efficient analysis method for predicting the output voltage of the beam was developed by using the finite element method coupled with piezoelectric behavior. By using this method, the effects of geometric parameters and various piezoelectric materials on power generation were investigated and the electric characteristics were evaluated. Design optimization of the beam geometries was performed for a base model. The optimum MFC design generated a maximum electric output of 40.1 V at a first natural frequency of 24.5 Hz.

  • This paper presents an optimal design of magnetorheological (MR) fluid based mount (MR mount in short) which can be applicable to vibration control of diesel engine of ship. In this work, a mixed - mode including squeeze mode, flow mode and shear mode is proposed and designed. In order to determine actuating damping force of MR mount required for efficient vibration control, excitation force from diesel engine is analyzed. In this analysis, a model of V-type engine is considered and the relationship between velocity and pressure of gas in torque of the piston is derived. Subsequently, by integrating the field-dependent rheological properties of commercially available MR fluid with the excitation force an appropriate size of MR mount is designed. In addition, in order to achieve maximum actuating force with geometric constraints design optimization is undertaken using ANSYS software. Through the magnetic density analysis, optimal design parameters such as bottom gap and radius of coil are determined.

  • In this study, the PRMS(Precipitation and Runoff Modeling System), developed by USGS(United States Geological Survey), was applied to the Yongdam dam watershed in the Geum River basin. The efficiency for runoff simulation and spatial characteristics of PRMS were evaluated. The runoff changes with the changes of subcatchments and HRUs were estimated. As results, the size of the subcatchment and HRV did not significantly affect the runoff at the exit of watershed. Consequently, the spatial characteristic of PRMS was shown as lumped type rather than semi-distributed. The geographical input data for Yongdam dam watershed were converted to the USGS Input type, and the parameters were calibrated using Rosenbrock optimization method, validated with the observed runoff data. The PRMS showed resonable agreements in the long-term continuous runoff simulation, if the accuracy of observed data is ensured.

  • A flow determination algorithm is proposed for the distributed hydrologic model. The advantages of a single flow direction scheme and multiple flow direction schemes are selectively considered to address the drawbacks of existing algorithms. A spatially varied flow apportioning factor is introduced in order to accommodate the accumulated area from upslope cells. The channel initiation threshold area(CIT) concept is expanded and integrated into the spatially distributed flow apportioning algorithm in order to delineate a realistic channel network. An application of a field example suggests that the linearly distributed flow apportioning scheme provides some advantages over existing approaches, such as the relaxation of over-dissipation problems near channel cells, the connectivity feature of river cells, the continuity of saturated areas and the negligence of the optimization of few parameters in existing algorithms. The effects of grid sizes are explored spatially as well as statistically.

  • A design study was conducted for a new concept aircraft(Canard Rotor/Wing: CRW) that has the capability of dual mode flight, a rotorcraft and a fixed wing mode. The CRW can show a vertical take off/landing and a high speed/efficiency cruise performance simultaneously. It is not surprising to develop a new sizing code for this class of aircraft because conventional sizing codes developed solely for either the rotary wing or the fixed wing aircraft are not adequate to design a dual mode aircraft operated both by the rotary wing through tip jet effux and the fixed wing lift. Thus, a new design code was developed based on the conventional sizing code by adding some features including rotor performance, duct flow, and engine flow analysis, hence could eventually predict the performance of reaction driven rotor, the flight performance and the flight characteristics. The various design parameters were investigated to find their influences on the flight performance then, a small UAV(Unmanned Aircraft Vehicle) of 1500 lbs class was optimally designed to have minimum weight using the developed sizing code.

  • A number of field experiments were conducted to assess the role of combined application of nitrogen and sulfur to increase the seed and oil yield of nonnodulating soybean (Glycine max (L) Merr.) cv. PK-416 $(V_1)$ and cv. PK-1024 $(V_2)$. Six combinations of N and S in three replicates each were used for this purpose i.e. $0\;S+23.5kg\;N\;ha^{-1}(T_1);\;0\;S+23.5+20kg\;N \;ha^{-1}(T_2);\;40\;S+23.5kg\;N\;ha^{-1}(T_3);\;40\;S+23.5+20kg\;N\;ha^{-1}(T_4);\;20+20\;S+23.5kg\;N\;ha^{-1}(T_5);\;20+20\;S+23.5+20kg\;N\;ha^l(T_6)$. Nitrate reductase (NR) and ATP-sulphurylase activities in the leaves were measured at various growth stages as the two enzymes catalyze the rate limiting steps of the assimilatory pathways of nitrate and sulphate, respectively. The activities of these enzymes were strongly correlated with seed yield. The higher seed, oil and protein yields were achieved with the treatment $T_6$ in both the cultivars due to optimization of NR activity and ATP-sulphurylase activity, as these parameters were influenced by N and S assimilation. Any variation from this combination was observed to decrease the activity of these enzymes resulting in reductions in the seed, oil and protein yield of soybean.
