The purpose of this study were to determine the optimum mixing ratio of sewage sludge and papermill sludge as carbon source required to SRB in treating abandoned mine drainage with natural purification wetland. If mixing sewage sludge/papermill sludge 2.0 SO42- reduced 46.2%, and then 30% in mixing ratio 0.5.Because sewage sludge was faster biodegradability than papermill sludge, effluent SCOD was 40mg/L in mixing ratio 0.5, and after that was all but regular. pH and ORP were almost neutral and -160mV, but after that was all but regular and it indicated that SRB activity was suitable. Fe removal rate was 60% in mixing ratio 2.0, and 54% in mixing ratio 0.5. In point of carbon source supply, It indicated that mixing ration 0.5 was considered as the most appropriate, because degradability of swewage sludge under short time was higher than that of papermill sludge.
The purpose of this experimental research was focused to improve the quality of the effluent and the yielded sludge when the papermill wastewater was treated by the indirect aerated submerged biofilter as a second treatment method of papermill wastewater. Changing the various experimental factors(Nutrient additions or not, HRT, F/M ratio, recirculation ratio, etc) with indirect aerated biofilter, the results obtained are as follows. 1. Because of the microbes concentration could be sustained to $9,000mg/l$ in submerged biofilter and then the volumetric organic loads could be increased to $2.7kg-BOD/m^3/day$(that of activated sludge is $0.8kg-BOD/m^3/day$), the reactor volume can be reduced to one third of the activated sludge treatment. 2. Because of the yield coefficient(Y) and the endogenous decay coefficient(kd) were revealed 0.4 and 0.07/d, the yielded sludge volume was reduced by for compared with that of the activated sludgg process. 3. The concentration of the sloughed sludge in the reactor was 2.62~4.01%, so the thickener could be omitted in the papermill wastewater sludge treatment process. 4. When the operating was conducted at HRT of 4hrs, the treatment efficiencies of BOD and COD were obtained 80% and 70%, Therefore operating time can be reduced to one half of the activated sludge treatment.
Fiber mats were made at various density levels, using fibers from papermill sludge, ricestraw and various mixtures of the two. The paper mill sludges were collected from Moorim Papermill Co, and Jeonjoo Papermill Co. They were soaked in the liquid sulfur compounds, sulfur-tall oil and sulfurpolyester compounds, and made into fiber-reinforced, sulfur-based composition board. Under optimum conditions of fiber mat preparation and saturation with molten sulfur and modified sulfur, the Young's moduls of the manufactured tiber-reinforced composition board are superior to those of conventional wood-based composition boards. For example, the moduli of elasticity of the composition board made from papermill sludge, with a density of 0.40gm/$cm^3$, were greater than 1,400,000psi as compared 800,000psi for high density hardboard(1.28gm/$cm^3$). The modulus of rupture of the best reinforced composition board manufactured was over 9000psi, comparable to 6000psi of high density hardboard. The proposed Bryant and Lee's theory, "Modified Rule of Mixtures" can be applicable to the nonoriented and short fibrous composition board, when it was modified from "Rule of Mixtures" established by Paul an Jones, and supplemented by Smith and Cox's theory, In the Bryant and Lee's theory of $E_c=\frac{1}{3}aE_fV_f+bE_mV_m$, the constants "a" and "b" for the composition boards made from papermill sludge and the mixtures of ricestraw and the sludge were identified to be in the ranges of 3.29~3.54 and -2.47~-2.80 respectively.
The purpose of this experimental research was focused to improve the quality of the effluent and the yielded sludge when the papermill wastewater was treated by the indirect aerated submerged biofilter as a second treatment method of papermill wastewater. Changing the various experimental factors (Nutrient additions or not, HRT, Fh ratio, recirculation ratio, etc) with indirect aerated submerged biofilter, the results are as follows. 1) because of the microbes concentration could be sustained to 9, oho man in submerged biofilter and then the volumetric organic loads could be increased to 2.7 kg-BOD/$m^3$<\TEX>/day, the reactor volume can be reduced. 2) Because of the yield coefficient(Y) and the endogenous decay coefficient(kd) were revealed 0.4 and 0.07/d, the yielded sludge volume was reduced. 3) The concentration of the sloughed sludge in the reactor was 2.62~4.01 %, so the thickener could be omited in the papermill wastewater sludge treatment process. 4) When the operating was conducted at HRT of 4hrs, the treatment efficiencies of BOD and COD were obtained 80% and 70%. 5) The range of the theoretical recirculation ratios of this reactor was 14~26. According to those ratios, at the low loads ( BOD volumetric loads is less than 0.79 kg-BOD/$m^3$<\TEX>/day, FM ratio is less than 2.0/d) the results were fitted to the theoretical recirculation ratios (14 ~26) and at the high loads the efficiency were increased to the rise of recirculation ratios.
This study was performed to investigate applicabilities of sewage sludge and papermill sludge as carbon sources in biologically treating abandoned acidic mine drainage, and effects of limestone. In spite of ranging average 3.3 in influent pH, SRB(Sulfate Reducing Bacteria) was well grown. because effluent pH was maintained by alkalinity a little under for whole stages. TCODcr was high in effluent with washing out in early stage. but its concentration was low with passed time and did not cause the problem of secondary pollution. Removal rate of Mn was remarkably low, but in case of heavy metals such as Fe, the fixation trends showed high as the volume of ${SO_4}^2$ reduction increased. In case of mixing sewage sludge and papermill sludge, when their mixing ratio were 1 : 1 and 2 : 1 respectively, rate of ${SO_4}^2$ reduction and removal rate of heavy metals were high. The mixing ratio 1 : 1 was considered as the most appropriate, because degradability of swewage sludge under short time was higher than that of papermill sludge. As a result of investigating efficiencies of limestone and biological treatment, biological treatment excelled limestone in neutralization and removal rate of heavy metals.

The purpose of this study was to develop model for estimating biodegrability of organic sludge (sewage and papermill) in various environmental conditions. to assume degradable degree with operating time of SRB reactor. and evaluate duratior of organic sludge as carbon source. Average TCOD was 28.7~63.2mg/L in effluent. organic sludge did not much supply carbon source for experimental period. But in point of durability. it seemed that organic sludge was efficient because it was not consumed by degradation of much organic matter within short period. With increasing $SO_4{^{2-}}$ reduction rate. Pb and Fe was removed 77~82% and 33~59%. respectively. Because Al was precipitated as a hydroxide. its removal rate wa,. about $54{\pm}2%$ in R-l~R-3 maintaining low pH but about 78% in R-4 maintaining high pH. Because Mn was large in solubility. it showed to be much lower than other heavy metals. Considering supportable capacity or durability of orgainc matter for initial SRB mixing ratio of sewage/papermill 0.5 was regarded as appropriate substituting material and at this time. it estimated that carbon source continued about 3.08 year but safety factor must apply to be thought over. because various factors had an effect on degradation of organic sludge.

This research was carried out to investigate chemical pretreatment using limestone in treating abandoned metallic mine drainage with anaerobic biological treatment, and to estimate application of papermill and livestock sludge as carbon sources for SRB (Sulfate Reducing Bacterial. Capacity of anaerobic limestone bed was steeply decreased. But if limestone was utilized as pretreatment process in treating them with anaerobic biological treatment. it could look forward to stabilize system because it did initally neutralize them. Effluent SCOD in R-4 was lower than R-l~R-3 in inital HRT 5day but its concentration was high in HRT 1day after passed time. Therefore in point of durability and supply of organic matter. it seemed that R-4 was useful became organic matter in R-4 was not consumed by excessive degradation within short period. In all reactors, pH was suitable for SRB growth in whole HRT, but on the evidence of ORP, SRB was active after HRT 2day. Fixation trend of heavy meta s showed high as $SO_4{^{2-}}$ reduction efficiency increased, and $SO_4{^{2-}}$ reduction and fixation of heavy metals were relatively high in HET 2day.

Changes of microbial activity and physicochemical environment during composting of papermill sludge(PMS) in the pilot plant equipped with an agitated bed reactor were monitored for establishing the efficient composting system. Microbial activity determined as the evolution of $CO_2$ increased for the first 10 days after introduction of PMS to the reactor and decreased thereafter. Population changes of microorganisms in the reactor-PMS were not typical as in windrow system. The ratio of thermophilic bacteria to mesophilic bacteria, however, increased slowly even 23 days after introduction. Temperature of PMS increased rapidly from the first day and reached $62^{\circ}C$ at 7 days after introduction and decreased slowly thereafter. The acidity of PMS was pH 6.8 initially, increased to pH 8.0 after 7 days and decreased to pH 7.4 after 23 days. Redox potential(Eh) of PMS was -320mV at the beginning of composting, but it was increased with time to reach -15mV after 23 days composting. However, Eh of PMS pre-sterilized before measurement was average 50mV, regardless of composting periods indicating the major role of microorganisms during composting process. Water content of PMS was 67% initially and decreased to about 50% after 23 days composting in the reactor. Less than 13 days-old compost inhibited growth of radish in the container mixture with bed soil. Based on statistical analysis of microbial and physicochemical parameters of PMS during composting, an equation was developed for determining compost maturity. A number of experiments using various organic wastes are required before application of the formular to the practical use.

Objectives in this study are to stabilize the organic sludges which were produced from papermill wastewater, nightsoil treatment facilities and utilized as foods for earthworm, to find the method for using the cast which was orginated by earthworm as fertilizer, and ultimately to develop the practical technique to solve the environmental problems by optimization of wastes treatment. The results of this study were summarized as follows. In the investigation for fertilizer effect of cast, germination rates of cucumber, tomato, and cabbage were investigated. The germination status of 3 types of plants was excellent as over 90% in the combination case of 30-45% cast. In the investigation for fertilizer effect of cast derived from nightsoil sludge, the growing status of cucumber, tomato, and cabbage was excellent in the combination case of 30-45% cast. In the experiment for fertilizer effect investigation of cast derived from papermill sludge, the growing status of cucumber, tomato, and cabbage was excellent in the combination case of 30-45% cast. Also, in the combination case of 60% cast, plants growth was not disturbed.

For the biological treatment of phenolic resin wastewater containing phenol and formaldehyde, a phenol-degrading yeast was isolated from the papermill sludge, and then identified as Candida tropicalis PW-51 according to morphological, physiological and biochemical properties. The strain was able to degrade high phenol concentrations up to 2,000mg/l within 58 hours in batch cultures. Phenol-degrading efficiency by the strain was maximum at the culture conditions of a final concentration of 9 $\times$ 10$^{6}$ cells/ml, 30$\circ$C and pH 7.0. The mean degradation rate of phenol was highest at 45.5mg/l/h in 1,000mg/l phenol from 500mg/l to 2,000mg/l phenol. Because the enzyme activity of catechol 1,2-dioxygenase increased in the course of degradation of phenol, it seems that this strain degrades phenol via the ortho-cleavage of benzene ring. The isolate C. tropicalis PW-51 could be effectively used for the biological treatment of phenolic resin wastewater.
