  • In this paper, optimal cutting condition to minimize the form error in side wall machining with a flat end mill is studied. Cutting forces and tool deflection are calculated considering surface shape generated by the previous cutting such as roughing. Using the form error prediction method from tool deflection, optimal cutting condition considering form accuracy is investigated. Also, the effects of tool teeth number, tool geometry and cutting conditions on form error are analyzed. The characteristics and the difference of generated surface shape in up and down milling are discussed and over-cut free condition in up milling is presented. Form error reduction method through successive up and down milling is also suggested. The effectiveness and usefulness of the presented method are verified from a series of cutting experiments under various cutting conditions. It is confirmed that form error prediction from tool deflection in side wall machining can be used in optimal cutting condition selection and real time surface error simulation for CAD/CAM systems. This study also contributes to cutting process optimization for the improvement of form accuracy especially in precision die and mold manufacturing.

  • The continuous casting process has been adopted increasingly in recent years to save both energy and labor. It has experienced a rapid development in the production of semi-finished steel products, replacing the conventional route of ingot casting plus rolling. To achieve this good merit, however, more studies about a heat transfer mechanism between roll and slab are needed. So this paper shows the results of the deformation behavior of steel cast slabs, which are about the solidification and heat transfer. This study is used to prevent internal cracks of a slab in a bending and unbending zone. The value of moving strand shell bulging between two supporting rollers under ferrostatic pressure and slab-self weight has been computed in terms of creep and elastic-plasticity. The high strand distributions in solidified shell undergoes a series of bulging are calculated with boundary condition a very closed to continuous steel cast slabs productions.

  • Seed, stem and sprout of F. tataricum were separately milled using the ultra fine mill under the same condition to investigate the effect of roasting or extruding on the particle size, microstructure and water solubility of dietary fiber. The mean particle size of MR (roasting) is increased in stem and sprout, and that of ME (extruding) is increased in seed, compared to that of control. The microscopic views of seed show that control has the spherical shape but ME the larger and irregular shape, and those of stem and sprout show that control has the needle like shape but ME more rounded shape. Water solubility index of ME is much higher than that of control or MR in seed, stem and sprout. It shows that seed, stem and sprout are damaged more in extruding than in roasting, and the starch and cell wall structure must be destroyed to change the water insoluble dietary fiber into the water soluble dietary fiber.

  • An experimental research to evaluate the slip coefficient of high-strength slip-critical-type bolt connection of weathering steel plate has been performed in this paper. Experiments were performed with several surface conditions such as clean mill scale with hand or power brush cleaning, shot blast cleaned, inorganic zinc primer coated, and weather coated surfaces. Also, the relaxation of bolt clamping force was estimated during 500 hours. It was ascertained from the experiments that slip coefficients are greater than 0.40 in all faying surface conditions except mill scale surface with power brushing. The quantify of relaxation depended on the surface conditions and was $3{\sim}8%$, i.e., less than 10%.

  • An experimental research to evaluate the slip coefficients of high-strength friction-type bolt connection of weathering steel plate has been performed in this paper. The test specimens with mill scale or shot blast had been exposed in open air during 3 and 6 months and cleaning of rust surface by hand brushing, power tool brushing and no cleaning was considered. The relaxation of bolt clamping force had also been measured during 600 hours. It was found that slip coefficients increased to the value over 0.6 with exposure except mill scale surface by power tool brushing. The relaxation of bolt tension force in exposed specimens also increased and maximum value reached to about 10%.

  • The term‘High Speed Machining’has been used for many years to describe end milling with small diameter tools at high rotational speeds. typically 10,000 - 100,000 rpm. The process was applied in the aerospace industry for the machining of light alloys, notably aluminium. In recent years, however, the mold and die industry has begun to use the technology for the production of components, including those manufactured from hardened tool steels. And the end-mill is an important tool in the milling process. A typical examples for the end mill is the milling of pocket and slot in which a lot of material is removed from the workpiece. Therefore the proper selection of cutting parameters for end milling is one of the important factors affecting the cutting cost. The one of the advantages of HSM is cutting thin-wall part of light alloy like Al (thinkness about 0.3mm). In this paper, firstly, we study characteristics of HSM, and then, we choose the optimal parameters(cutting forces) and investigate various machining strategies to cut thin-wall part by experiment.

  • Due to the international competition and global pressure, the roll speed is increased. However, higher speeds increase the power density in the process as well as the plant's potential to react with vibrations. Under certain operating conditions, vibrations may occur, which again cause chattermarks, strip rupture or coil break fault. The appropriate condition monitoring is needed to improve product quality and availability. The aim of condition monitoring is to reduce maintenance costs, increase productivity and improve product quality. This paper proposes a condition monitoring tool designed for the classification of coil break fault. This method is used to cold rolling mill for faults monitoring based on vibration and motor current signals. The results show that the performance of classification has high accuracy based on experimental work.

  • This paper introduces a system to machine micro-sized patterns effectively on surface based on micro-milling process using tools with simultaneous rotation and oscillation, oscillation micro milling. To review the effectiveness of proposed concept, we integrated a micro-spindle supported by active magnetic bearings with a precision 3-axis air bearing stage using double-wedge mechanism, and tested this oscillation milling. Two types of oscillation milling were tested, which are linear oscillation milling with a flat end mill and elliptical oscillation milling with a ball end mill with 0.3 mm of diameter. The spindle was rotating 110 krpm and workpiece was moving constant speed of 2~8 mm/sec during the oscillation milling. As the results, multiple oval shape dimples were generated in regular spacing, and the variation of elliptical motion made different shapes of patterns. The results showed that proposed oscillation milling can be successfully used for machining repeated micro-patterns.

  • In this paper, we propose camber monitoring system which is using on hot rolling process. In roughing mill which is one of the rolling part in hot rolling process, steel plate can be bended in width direction under the imbalance of rolling condition. This bending of steel plate in width direction is called as camber. In order to measure the camber, first, cameras which are installed over transport pathway of steel plate take pictures of whole shape of steel plate. And location value of steel plate edge is extrated from these pictures by edge detection algorithm. But, there are a lot of noises which are generated by such as water sprays, dusts, peripheral equipments in these pictures, and these noises make edge detection difficult. In order to solve this kind of problem, we developed a direction selective edge detection algorithm, and applicated in our camber monitoring system. As a result, we got stable results in spite of process noises.

  • This paper presents a machining error compensation methodology due to deflection of micro cutting tools in side cutting processes. Generally in order to compensate for tool deflection errors it is necessary to carry out a series of simulations, cutting force prediction, tool deflection estimation and compensation method. These can induce numerous calculations and expensive costs. This study proposes an improved approach which can compensate for machining errors without simulation processes concerning prediction of cutting force and tool deflection. Based on SEM images of test cutting specimens, polynomial relationships between machining errors and corrected tool positions were induced. Taking into account changes of cutting conditions caused by tool position variation, an iterative algorithm was applied in order to determine corrected tool position. Experimental works were carried out to validate the proposed approach. Comparing machining errors of nominal cutting with those of compensated cutting, overall machining errors could be remarkably reduced.
