This paper surveys the theory of symmetry group of differential equations. A proof of the simplest version of the Noether's theorem on conservation laws has been presented with examples in the classical mechanics. As a new approach to the conservation laws the theory of characteristic cohomology due to S. H. Wang and others has been presented.
The industrial sector is the largest energy consumer, accounting for 44% of the total energy consumption of Korea in 1981. Energy conservation in the industrial processes is one of the most important strategies to the energy conservation to the nation. This paper introduces principles of energy conservation which is the maximum thermodynamic efficiency in energy use. Two important factors considered are how much heat is available and how good is the heat available (the quality of energy).
The Fine Art Department has sent a list of ceramic ware to the Conservation Science Laboratory of the National Museum of Korea for conservation treatment. The listed ceramic ware will be newly displayed in the ceramic ware gallery of Yongsan Museum after it is opened. Based on the list, Conservation Science Laboratory has been taking special measures to conservation the ceramic ware since 2002. This paper attempts to introduce the process of restoring the Blue-and-white porcelain Jar with phoenix Design (Jubsoo 631) and Celadon peahen-shaped water dropper (Duksoo 5202).
Graduate Students in engineering at The University of Tokushima can take part in an educational program which is offered long-term internship opportunities (at a company or the government). Onishi, one of authors, took part in this educational program. She is studying environmental conservation at the university and is interested in environmental conservation activities led by residents. Striking a balance between environmental conservation and human economic activities is seen as important to society. However, the continuing in environmental conservation activities is difficult. Therefore, collaborative activities attract attention as a way of the continuing in environmental conservation activities. A person called "co-coordinator" is a key to make many people to participate in the sustainable collaboration activities. The main role of co-coordinator is connecting people who are interested in environmental conservation activities. The purpose of joining in environmental conservation activities is different from person to person depending on where they belong to or where they live. Onishi took part in the educational program to learn the techniques of adjusting the differing interests. She did her internship at environmental consulting company in Kamikatsu town, Tokushima prefecture. She participated in several environmental conservation activities and work experience as a coordinator. Through this experience, she learned not only the technique but also the difficulty of the work. This paper reports the results obtained from her experience.
Stone cultural heritages in Korea have a severe damages from chemical and biological weathering because most of them have been situated in outdoors without any suitable protection systems, and this in turn causes deformation and structural damage. To counteract these problems and increase durability, various kinds of conservation materials are used in the conservation and restoration treatments. However until now there are not many practical and technological experiments on this subject. This paper attempts quantitative evaluation of effectiveness about chemical of ethylsilicate based resin for sandstone in Yeongyang-gun. It takes a long time to evaluate durability and side effect after conservation materials treatment. So we use artificial weathering through freezing§ thawing experimental method. As a result of this experiment, porosity and absorptance increased, and elastic wave speed, elastic modules, unconfined compression strength and tensile strength decreased more than before. This study plans to make a scientific method study about weathering factor and mechanism, and to deduce correlation between artificial weathering and natural weathering.
In this paper, key features of an excavated submarine article and general process of its conservation will be introduced. First, the conservation process of removing salt from an excavated submarine article was done by desalting stage, and the X-Ray photographing was done for its inner and outer damage detection. The process of making a restoration mold with the beeswax for the broken part, making restoration material with fillers and grinded broken pieces of earthen ware have similar color and quality, and color matching distinguishable for the naked eye after the whole conservation process have been finished.
Adding chemical additives in bamboo paper making procedure in China became common in last decades to increase productivity. Supply of repair paper for paper based artefacts became more and more difficult due to this tendency. Furthermore, stains and spots on paper which happen to appear during dying procedure make it difficult to use modern bamboo paper for repair treatment. In this research, lime fermentation and sun bleaching were main elements which affect texture and color of paper. Impurities, however, add some effects on paper quality. Less thouroughly washed raw materials after fermentation also affects texture of paper substrate. One most significant impurity is lime. Minimum residue of lime can make stains and spots after dying. Reproduction of white bamboo paper would become useful resource in various conservation treatments as a repair paper, and also, for reproduction of paper woven painting. However, further research to improve quality at early stage of paper making procedure in China required.
This study was conducted to identify the state of conservation of the national paper heritages and to seek ways of conservation management, focusing on regular monitoring directly performed by the government on the national movable cultural heritages. Subjects for the investigation were limited to investigations conducted by both the Cultural Heritage Conservation Center and the Artistic Heritage Division in 2014 and 2015. Paper heritages are easily affected by temperature, humidity, lighting, etc. due to the nature of the material and can easily be damaged by physical strength; therefore stable conservation environment is essential and regular investigation on movable cultural heritages conducted according to the Cultural Heritage Protection Act is necessary to protect from contamination, being torn, bending, friction, or loss. Losing a chance for timely proper treatment will bring irrevocable result therefore strict management is necessary; continuous monitoring is also needed after treatment. Analysis on the pigments, materials and structures, detailed investigation, data establishment for conservation of cultural heritages and regular investigation should be done. Detailed data on the national cultural heritages will be a base of more reasonable conservation management system for the national paper heritages and will realize continuous improvement on regular investigation practice.
Conservation science team of the National Museum of Korea has conducted conservation treatment for 3 pieces of portraits as a part of project for publishing illustration book of relics of paintings and writings. Among them, portrait scroll of Jo Gyeong is a representative portrait of Seonmoogongsin rank in 17th century of Chosun, which was donated in 1997 and its whole body painted on silk was scrolled. This portrait was in poor state including the silk of portrait got loose from lining paper completely and exfoliation of the pigments. Accordingly before preservation treatment, production technique and the quality of the material lining were surveyed through scientific study(investigation through microscope, XRF, X-ray) and preservation treatment was conducted in order of disassembly, cleaning, removal of lining paper, infiling of the missing parts, lining, finishing.
Sustainable development in society has become the center of focus in many fields such as industry, environment, health, culture, etc. Considering that the concept of heritage involves understanding it as a 'resource' to improve the quality of people's lives, sustainability is an important goal that heritage policy has to achieve. Adopting the definition of sustainability in the 1987 Brundtland Report, this paper defines the concept of sustainability with respect to heritage, as well as their respective roles. Following that, three action principles are presented: value-based conservation, rational decision-making, and community involvement. Two cases demonstrating how the three principles should be practiced in managing change are then illustrated. Considering that heritage can play its role as a resource once its significance is protected, this paper argues that value-based rational decision-making is of paramount importance and the first principle. Conservation aims to manage change by practicing a cyclic process of value identification, value sustaining, and value dissemination. Therefore, this paper argues that all processes should be connected in the context of heritage values. A rational decision-making process practicing value-based conservation is then suggested. This paper argues that rational decision-making can only be practiced once values are identified by objective criteria and managed by rational judgment upon impact assessment. Community involvement, the third principle, is necessary to realize value-based conservation and rational decision-making. Recognizing that a community is a beneficiary of heritage and a creator of a beneficial process at the same time, it discusses the role of community and the importance of this role in policies for the sustainability of heritage. This paper concludes with a set of recommendations to improve policies after examining the two decision-making cases.
