  • There has been a growing interest on the effect of volcanic eruption on the aviation safety, air travel and economy especially after the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull in Iceland. Since volcanic eruption is influential on a large geographic region, the effect usually extends to other neighboring countries. Korea also has an active volcano named Mountain Baekdu. Hence, the need to estimate in advance the quantitative impact of the potential eruption of Mt. Baekdu on South Korean air transportation system. However, previous studies with quantitative estimation were confined to the calculation of the direct economic loss from shut down of the airports, grounding of airlines, and trade deficits caused by the eruption. Therefore, this paper introduces a new approach to assess more accurate impact simultaneously considering volcanic ash dispersal and aviation routes. This approach is then applied to a virtual scenario to predict the damage to air traffic. With further development, this method can help estimate the damage in the air transportation industry in more accurate and faster ways. Prediction outcomes can also be utilized in setting up the emergency response plan for the air transportation industry and contribute to the creation of more proactive and predictive measures in the future.

  • Inorganic stiffening agents were prepared by mixing paper sludge incineration ash, blast furnace slag fine powder quicklime, anhydrous gypsum and fly ash. The main components of the solidifying agent developed for sludge treatment were SiO, $Al_2O_3$, $TiO_2$, $Fe_2O_3$, $Mn_2O_3$, CaO, MgO, $Na_2O$, $K_2O$, $P_2O$, and $SO_3$. Unlike cement, the developed solidifying agent did not contain $Cr^{6+}$, which is known as a carcinogen. Heavy metals and oil contaminated soil were mixed with solidifying agent and cured for 7 days and the heavy metal content was below the environmental standard. Sewage sludge cake, food waste and solidifying agent were mixed with each other, and after 7 days curing, soil component test showed that the heavy metal content was below the environmental standard. After mixing the sludge, solidifying agent and additive mixture into the beaker, the ammonia concentration was measured to be 0 after 3 days.

  • Paper sludge ash, blast furnace slag, fine powder quicklime, anhydrous gypsum, and fly ash as the main ingredients were prepared to suit the salty soils of marine soils. The solidification component is a kind of recycled ceramic, and CaO plays an important role in solidification. The neutralization time after solidification was about 2 weeks, and the compressive strength was about 12N/mm2 in the mortar test after one week incubation with standard yarn. This is about 14 times stronger than the solidifying agent used in the metropolitan area. As a result of applying plate load test to saltous marine soils, we obtained the yield load that can pass the large scale even after 5 days. In the uniaxial compressive strength test, shear strength of about 300 kPa was obtained after 5 days. It will be useful for supplementing the soft ground in the area where marine reclamation is much like the Incheon area.

  • In this paper, the engineering properties and estimation of drying shrinkage of concrete incorporating fly ash (FA), blast furnace slag (BS) and cement kiln dust (CKD) were discussed. FA, BS and CKD contents ranged from 0% to 20%. Water to binder ratio (W/B) also ranged from 40 to 50 %, with a 5% interval. For estimating drying shrinkage, an exponential model proposed by the author was applied, According to results, the use of FA, BS and CKD resulted in a decrease of flowability and air contents. As expected, the use of admixtures also decreases the early age strength of concrete, while at later age, due to a pozzolanic reaction of FA and BS, the compressive strength was recovered to a value comparable with that of plain concrete. For drying shrinkage, the use of admixtures led to an increase in the drying shrinkage of concrete. The exponential model suggested by the author showed good agreement between the calculated and experimental values both at early age and at later age.

  • The goals of this study are to develop a sprayable strain-hardening cement composite (SHCC) and to investigate the potential of the sprayable SHCC for packing the joint between existing R/C building and seismic retrofit elements. This paper provides the procedure for the development of a sprayable SHCC, test results of fresh properties required to a sprayable SHCC, and mock-up test results of developed sprayable SHCC. Control mixture of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber-reinforced SHCC (PVA-SHCC) was predetermined based on available research results. The pumpability and sprayability of the SHCC mixture were depended on the fluid property of fresh SHCC mixture. In this study, the effects of admixtures such as AE agent and fly ash on the rheological and rebound properties of control SHCC mixture were investigated to determine a sprayable SHCC mixture. Flow values and air content during shotcreting procedure of sprayable SHCC were also evaluated. The results show that flow or flowability and amount of air of three SHCC mixtures decreased almost linearly according to shotcreting procedure from mixer to nozzle. And the pumpability and sprayability of mixture with AE agent and low amounts of fly ash were superior to the those of SHCC. Mock-up test result show that developed sprayable SHCC indicates much improved workability and shotcrete construction period than conventional method(nonshrinkage mortar).

  • In recent years, the use of supplementary cementing materials, especially in addition to concrete, has been the subject of many researches. Rice husk ash (RHA) is one of these materials that in this research, is added to the roller compacted concrete as one of the pozzolanic materials. This paper evaluates how different contents of RHA added to the roller compacted concrete pavement specimens, can influence on the strength and permeability. The results are compared to the control samples and determined optimal level of RHA replacement. As it was expected, RHA as supplementary cementitious materials, improved mechanical properties of roller compacted concrete pavement (RCCP). Also, the application of adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) in predicting the permeability and compressive strength is investigated. The obtained results shows that the predicted value by this model is in good agreement with the experimental, which shows the proposed ANFIS model is a useful, reliable, fast and cheap tool to predict the permeability and compressive strength. A mean relative error percentage (MRE %) less than 1.1% is obtained for the proposed ANFIS model. Also, the test results and performed modeling show that the optimal value for obtaining the maximum compressive strength and minimum permeability is offered by substituting 9% and 18% of the cement by RHA, respectively.

  • Porous concrete enables water and air to pass through a firmly hardened material and allows required nutrients to reach roots of plants. The purpose of this study is to analyze void ratio, strength property and planting ability when using silica fume and fly ash, the change of aggregate gradation and ratio of paste to aggregate. The results of an experiment from the planting ability of the porous concrete to its influence on the compressive strength are reported in this paper. As a result of the experiment, the compressive strength is higher when the gradation of aggregate is smaller, and it also goes higher when the ratio of paste to aggregate gets larger. The planting ability of porous concrete is decided by the germination and the grass length of perennial ryegrass. The grass length of perennial ryegrass is longer when the gradation of aggregate is greater and the ratio of paste to aggregate gets smaller. Therefore the efficiency of planting goes through the perennial ryegrass is in compliance with the void ratio, aggregate gradation.

  • Highly plastic clays in their normally consolidated states are not always linear but are concave downwards. Thus their compression index deceases with the increase of consolidation pressure. The $e-{\log}{\sigma}_{\upsilon}{\prime}$ curves of plastic or non-plastic silty clays are not linear but are convex upwards. In this paper, consolidation tests were conducted with several undisturbed field soils of Korea south coast and their $e-{\log}{\sigma}_{\upsilon}{\prime}$ plots are not always linear. In case of using Butterfield's method(liquid limit 50~100%), ${\ln}{\upsilon}-{\ln}{\sigma}_{\upsilon}{\prime}$ plots are linear. But some undisturbed samples which have void ratio over 2.24, liquid limit over 100% and plasticity index over 60% are not linear. In results of consolidation tests with remolded samples which contain silt(fly ash) contents of 90% has compression index increasing with the increase in consolidation pressure.

  • This paper represents the physical and engineering characteristics of admixed liners obtained from several laboratory tests. Fly ash and weathered granitic soil are selected as primary materials, and bentonite and cement are used as additives. The results show that the maximum dry density reaches peak values at 5% and 25% of bentonite for Seochon and Samchonpo fly ash respectively, and for the weathered granitic soil, the maximum dry density increases continuously as the amount of bentonite increases. The strength of the admixed materials is not sensitive to the bentonite content, although it increases when the additives is cement. The required amount of bentonite to reach the hydraulic conductivity less than 10-7cm/sec are 18, 30, 10% of the sample weights for Seochon and Samchonpo fly ashes and the weathered granitic soil. The amount of additives show significant differences and depend on the grain size and their distributions and the amount of fine content in the primary materials
