  • Sialolithiasis is the formation of calcareous concretions within ductal system of a major or minor salivary gland. They are formed by deposition of calcium salts around a central nidus which may consist of desquamated epithelial cells, bacteria, foreign bodies, or products of bacterial decomposition. An 11-year-old boy complained of pain during meals and intermittent mild swelling in the right submandibular region. Although it was not detected in true occlusal radiograph, panoramic radiograph showed a round radiopaque mass 3mm in diameter. Computed tomography(CT) was taken for locating the stone and 3-dimensional reconstruction was performed. Under general anesthesia, sialoadenectomy was done through extraoral approach. Diagnosis of submandibular sialolithiasis using high-resolution CT with reconstructions was helpful for surgical decisions, namely radical removal of the submandibular gland and its duct.

  • Arteriosclerosis is the leading cause of stroke, with a fatality rate surpassing that of ischemic heart disease. High-resolution vessel wall magnetic resonance imaging is generally recognized as a non-invasive and panoramic method for the evaluation of arterial plaque; however, this method requires improved signal-to-noise ratio and scanning speed. Recent advances in high-density head and neck coil arrays are characterized by broad coverage, multiple channels, and closefitting designs. This review analyzes fast magnetic resonance imaging from the perspective of accelerated algorithms for vessel wall imaging and demonstrates the need for effective algorithms for signal acquisition using advanced radiofrequency system. We summarize different phased-array structures under various experimental objectives and equipment conditions, introduce current research results, and propose prospective research studies in the future.

  • Purpose : This study sought to examine the aspects of crestal bone resorption and to evaluate the clinical outcomes of the TiUnite$^{(R)}$ (Nobel Biocare, Sweden) anodized implant system. Materials and Methods : Among the 67 patients (211 fixtures) who were treated using TiUnite(r) implants at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital between March 2004 and January 2007, 26 (91 fixtures) were considered in this study. Initial and secondary stabilities were measured using Periotest$^{(R)}$ and Ostell(tm) Mentor. The radiographic evaluation of crestal bone resorption was carried out by measuring the change in crestal bone level at the time of surgery compared to that 1 year after loading. Panoramic radiograph and periapical radiograph were used. Based on the radiographic findings, the shapes of crestal bone resorption were classified. Results : The average amount of crestal bone resorption after 1 year of functional implant loading was 0.30 mm. There was no saucerization in 40 implant fixtures (43.9%), although more than 1 thread were exposed in 51 implant fixtures (56.6%). The success rate of the implants was 94.5%, and the survival rate was 100%. Conclusions : Good clinical outcomes and minor crestal bone resorption were noted in this study. Saucerization for the establishment of biological width was not a general finding in the TiUnite$^{(R)}$ anodized implant system.

  • The purpose of this study was first to analyze the utilization of dental examination through questionnaire to develop a diagnostic reference level of patient doses for dental radiography in korea. 77 dental institutions were classified into three groups: A group for the dental hospitals of the college of dentistry (11 institutions), B group for dental hospitals (30 institutions) and C group for dental clinics (36 institutions). The results were as follows : The mean numbers of unit chairs and medical staffs were 140.2, 15.3 and 5.8 sets, 112.6, 7.3 and 1.7 dentists, 3.1, 0.5 and no one radiologic technologists, and 19.7, 12.5 and 3.3 dental hygienists in A, B and C groups, respectively. The mean numbers of dental X-ray equipments were 14.64, 3.21 and 2.19 in A, B and C groups, respectively. Intraoral dental X-ray unit was used the most, the following equipments were panoramic, cephalometric, and cone-beam CT units. The most used X-ray imaging system was also digital system (above 50%) in all three groups. Insight dental film (Kodak, USA) having high sensitivity was routinely used for periapical radiography. The automatic processor was not used in many dental institutions, but the film-holding device was used in many dental institutions. The utilization rates of PACS in A, B and C groups were 90.9%, 83.3% and 16.7% respectively, and the PACS software program was used the most PiView STAR (Infinitt, Korea). The annual mean number of radiographic cases in one dental institution in 2008 for A group was 6.8 times and 21.2 times more than those for B and C groups, and periapical and panoramic radiographs were taken mostly. Tube voltage (kVp) and tube current (mA) for periapical radiography were similar in all three groups, but exposure time in C group was 12.0 times and 3.5 times longer than those in B and C groups. The amount of radiation exposure in C group, in which dental hygienists take dental radiographs, was more than those in other groups. The exposure parameters for panoramic radiography were similar in all three groups. In conclusion, the exposure parameters in dental radiography should be determined with reference level, not past experiences. Use of automatic processor and film-holding devices reduces the radiation exposure in film system. The quality assurance of dental equipments are necessary for the reduction of the patient dose and the improvement of X-ray image quality.

  • Tele-presence and tele-operation techniques are used to build up an immersive scene and control environment for the distant user. This paper presents a novel tele-presence system using the camera tracking based on planar homography. In the first step, the user wears the HMD(head mounted display) with the camera and his/her head motion is estimated. From the panoramic image by the omni-directional camera mounted on the mobile robot, a viewing image by the user is generated and displayed through HMD. The homography of 3D plane with markers is used to obtain the head motion of the user. For the performance evaluation, the camera tracking results by ARToolkit and the homography based method are compared with the really measured positions of the camera.

  • Purpose: This study evaluated correlation and risk factors between position of the mandibular third molars and mandibular angle fractures using clinical and radiographic findings. Methods: Medical records and panoramic radiographs of 188 patients with mandibular fractures were retrospectively reviewed. The presence and position of the third molars were assessed for each patient and were related to the occurrence of mandibular angle fractures. Results: The incidence of mandibular angle fracture was found to be greater when a lower third molar was present, particularly at the occlusal plane positioned on the $2^{nd}$ molar occlusal surface (by Archer system) and the third molar is impacted in mandibular ramus (by Pell & Gregory system). Of the 192 sites with a lower third molar, 32 (16%) had an angle fracture. Of the 184 site without lower third molars, 16 (8%) had an angle fracture. Conclusion: This study confirmed an increased risk of angle fractures in the presence of a lower third molar as well as variable risk for angle fracture, depending on positioning of the third molar.

  • Marsupialization is widely used as a primary treatment modality for reducing size of large cysts. However, there is no recommendation for specific duration of marsupialization. In addition, Carnoy's solution usually is applied at the time of enucleation as a fixative agent. In this report, we present an appropriate marsupialization duration of ameloblastoma involving two unerupted teeth. In this present study, marsupialization using a Foley catheter was performed in two cases of ameloblastoma of the mandible involving two adjacent impacted teeth. Carnoy's solution was applied for 3-5 minutes after enucleation in both patients. Periodically during marsupialization, the size of the radiolucency was measured in panoramic view, and clinical examination was performed. No remarkable paresthesia or soft tissue injury was observed after application of Carnoy's solution or during follow-up. We recommend 12 to 16 weeks as an adequate marsupialization duration for a large ameloblastoma involving two impacted teeth based on increased radiopacity along the margins of the lesions. Poor oral hygiene was an issue after 12 weeks of marsupialization in one case. There were no remarkable complications with Carnoy's solution in either case. The Foley tube has a two-way system that is more effective for irrigating the cavity than is the conventional one-way system.

  • A subminiature catadioptric omnidirectional optical system (SCOOS) with 2 mirrors, 6 plastic aspherical lenses, and an illumination system of 6 light emitting diodes, to observe the 360° panoramic image of the inner intestine, is optically designed and evaluated for a capsule endoscope. The total length, overall length, half field of view (HFOV), and F-number of the SCOOS are 14.3 mm, 8.93 mm, 51°~120°, and 3.5, respectively. The optical system has a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor sensor with 0.1 megapixels, and an illumination system of 6 light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with 0.25 lm to illuminate on the 360° side view of the intestine along the optical axis. As a result, the spatial frequency at the modulation transfer function (MTF) of 0.3, the depth of focus, and the cumulative probability of tolerance at the Nyquist frequency of 44 lp/mm and MTF of 0.3 of the optimized optical system are obtained as 130 lp/mm, -0.097 mm to +0.076 mm, and 90.5%, respectively. Additionally, the simulated illuminance of the LED illumination system at the inner surface of the intestine within HFOV, at a distance of 15.0 mm from the optical axis, is from a minimum of 315 lx to a maximum of 725 lx, which is a sufficient illumination and visibility.

  • Traditional live video streaming systems support the limited field of view (FOV) of image to the remote users. A server system based on the pan/tilt camera provides a user with wide view by changing the view direction of the camera mechanically. But, when many clients try to access to the server, this system can not offer their own view to every user simultaneously, and moreover it has the delay by camera motion. In order to offer wide views to several users, we propose new streaming system using the panorama image that has wide view. Our system is a kind of implementation of software pan/tilt camera. The server acquires panorama video and sends a part of the video to clients. Then, each client can control their own view. We need the effective way to reduce the average transmission data size and server burden to the compression because generally the full size of panorama video is too big to be served by the real-time streaming. To solve this problem, we propose an strip-based video compression and adaptive transmission of the compressed multiple strip videos. Experimental results show that our system can be adapted quickly to the change of view and the number of clients. Furthermore, proposed method effectively reduce the transmission data.

  • PURPOSE. The modified lateral-screw-retained implant prosthesis (LSP) is designed to combine the advantages of screw- and cement-retained implant prostheses. This retrospective study evaluated the mechanical and biological complication rates of implant-supported single crowns (ISSCs) inserted with the modified LSP in the posterior region, and determined how these complication rates are affected by clinical factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Mechanical complications (i.e., lateral screw loosening [LSL], abutment screw loosening, lateral screw fracture, and ceramic fracture) and biological complications (i.e., peri-implant mucositis [PM] and peri-implantitis) were identified from the patients' treatment records, clinical photographs, periapical radiographs, panoramic radiographs, and clinical indices. The correlations between complication rates and the following clinical factors were determined: gender, age, position in the jaw, placement location, functional duration, clinical crown-to-implant length ratio, crown height space, and the use of a submerged or nonsubmerged placement procedure. RESULTS. Mechanical and biological complications were present in 25 of 73 ISSCs with the modified LSP. LSL (n=11) and PM (n=11) were the most common complications. The incidence of mechanical complications was significantly related to gender (P=.018). The other clinical factors were not significantly associated with mechanical and biological complication rates. CONCLUSION. Within the limitations of this study, the incidence of mechanical and biological complications in the posterior region was similar for both modified LSP and conventional implant prosthetic systems. In addition, the modified LSP is amenable to maintenance care, which facilitates the prevention and treatment of mechanical and biological complications.
