Objectives : This study aims to analyze differences in the use of postpartum care services and identify the factors affecting their use. Methods : Data were collected from the 2008-2014 Korean Health Panel. Chi-square tests were conducted to analyze differences in the characteristics of women after birth by the use of postpartum care services. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors affecting the use of each type of postpartum care service. Results : Participants with higher education and household income levels were more likely to use a postpartum care facility. Individuals with a lower number of household members, who gave birth in 2011-2013, and who used hospitals specializing in obstetrics and gynecology had a greater likelihood of using a postpartum care facility. The probability of using a postpartum caretaker was higher when participants did not perform any economic activities. Conclusions : It is meaningful to confirm that use patterns and determinants of postpartum care facilities and postpartum caretakers are completely different and that the socioeconomic status of women affects the utilization of postpartum care facilities.
Objectives : To determine the relationship between of subjective recognition of social class and mental health. Method: The participants were adults with mental health experience over the age of 20 from the Korea Health Panel in 2013 (n=5,126). Methods : Data were analyzed using SPSS Statistics 22.0 The chi-square test and logistic regression analysis used to verify the relationship between subjective recognition of social class and mental health. Results : Lower subjective recognition of social class was associated with experience of depression and suicidal ideation. Other factors associated with depression experience were subjective health status, gender, age, marital status, type of medical care, disability, subjective health status, current smoking and frequency of drinking. Experience of suicidal ideation was, by contrast, associated with subjective health status, age, marital status, economic activity, private insurance, subjective health status and frequency of drinking. Conclusions : Health policies and institutions must be established to optimize health and preventive medicine approaches, especially or mental health as well as the provision of services.
This study investigated the prevalence of unmet needs for health care among Korean adults and related factors. Using data from the 2012 Korea Health Panel, 1,896 adults aged 65 and over and two age groups(Young-Old(66-74) and Old-Old($65{\leq}$)) were analyzed to identify these factors. Logistic regression analysis was used to examine the main factors associated with unmet medical needs. According to the results of this study, the factors influencing unmet medical needs with regard to economic factors were Subjective Health Status(young-old), Disability(young-old), Activity Limitation(young-old), Education Level(old) and Economic Activity(old). The factors influencing unmet medical needs were factors of attitude, information, and disease. factors were Disability(young-old), Activity Limitation(young-old), Education Level(old) and Economic Activity(old). Therefore, further research that investigates unmet needs depending on age group in the elderly would suggest helpful policy implications.
Objectives: The goal of this paper is to examine the social network effects on post-traumatic sdress disorder (PTSD) in female North Korean immigrants who entered South Korea in 2007. Specifically, it attempts to verify if the density and composition of networks make a difference after controlling for the network size. Methods: A multivariate logistic regression is used to probe the effects of social networks using the North Korean Immigrant Panel data set. Because the data set had only completed its initial survey when this paper was written, the analysis was cross-sectional. Results: The size of the support networks was systematically related to PTSD. Female North Korean immigrants with more supporting ties were less likely to develop PTSD, even after controlling for other risk factors (odds-ratio for one more tie was 0.8). However, once we control for the size of the network, neither the density nor the composition of the networks remains statistically significant. Conclusions: The prevalence of the PTSD among female North Korean immigrants is alarmingly high, and regardless of the characteristics of supporting network members, the size of the supporting networks provides substantial protection. This implies that a simple strategy that focuses on increasing the number of supporting ties will be effective among North Korean immigrants who entered South Korea in recent years.
Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the clinical characteristics and risk factors on the occurrence of metabolic syndrome (MS), and to examine factors affecting the severity of coronary artery diseases in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Methods: A total of 894 patients who had admitted C national university hospital from 2008 to 2010 participated in this study. Collected data were lipid profiles, abdominal circumference, blood pressure, fasting blood sugar (FBS) level, participants' demographic data and other risk factors by interview, measurement, and review of participants' medical records. MS was defined according to modified National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III and Asia-Pacific Criteria. Results: The participants' mean age was 64.7 (${\pm}11.0$) years and 65% was male patients. The participants' with MS was 37.6% in men and 71.4% in women. According to binary logistic regression analysis, high FBS (95% CI 1.7-2.0) and lower high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (95% CI 1.1-1.9) were independent predictors of severe coronary artery disease. Conclusion: These risk factors of severe coronary artery disease will be utilized as an important basic data in part of management, education, and countermeasure of patients with both MS and AMI.
Purpose: The purposes of this secondary analysis study was to examine prevalence, risk factors and unmet healthcare needs among adults with hypertension. Methods: A sample of 3,386 adults over the age of 40 with hypertension were drawn from the Korea Health Panel Study (2013). Using SPSS 22.0 version, descriptive statistics including frequency, percentage, chi-square and logistic regression were performed. Results: Results showed that 18.9% of the sample reported unmet healthcare needs with the most frequently cited one was financial burdens (43.2%). The reported experiences of unmet healthcare needs differed by gender, marital status, vision or hearing impairment, memory problem, impaired mobility, subjective health status, total family income, depressive episode and the difficulty in making decisions. The sample participants were more likely to report unmet healthcare if they had vision impairment, low income and perception that their health status as moderate to poor. Those without vision impairment were less likely to report unmet healthcare needs. Conclusion: The identified risk factors of unmet healthcare needs should be addressed which would enhance access both to health care and to resolution of unmet healthcare needs. Since visual ability seems to impact perception of unmet healthcare needs, it may be useful to find ways to address this factor.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate risk factors for chronic ADL, IADL disability. The study explored clinical and socio-demographic risk factors of functional status decline. Methods: Data from the Survey of Living Condition of Elderly 3-year panel study were analyzed. The study subjects were 5,928 community-dwelling people aged 65 years or older who were no disability in ADL and IADL at baseline. Predisposing factors, pathology, impairment, and functional limitations were regarded as risk factors. Logistic regression analysis was used. Results: During the 3-year study period, 3.9% participants developed chronic ADL disability, 9.4% participants were IADL disabled. After controlling for predisposing factor, the best predictors for ADL disability at 36 months were fall as a pathology factor, cognitive decline, disability judgement, lower limb functional limitation. Comorbidity, fall, cognitive decline, disability judgement, lower limb and upper limb functional limitation were risk factors for IADL disability. Conclusions: Health promotion program focusing elderly is essential to prevent ADL and IADL disability. Mobilizing physical activity should be included in health promotion program for elderly.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The study objectives were to examine the participation rate in food assistance programs and explore the factors that contribute to such participation among the Korean elderly population. SUBJECTS/METHODS: The study sample comprised 3,932 respondents aged 65 years or older who were selected from a secondary data set, the fourth Korean Welfare Panel Study (KoWePS). The factors, related to participation in programs were examined based on the predisposing, enabling and need factors of the help-seeking behavior model. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to select the best contributors among the factors related to program participation. RESULTS: The predisposing rate in food assistance programs was 8.5% (7.1% for men and 10.4% for women). When all variables were included in the model, living without spouse, no formal education, low income, having social security benefits and food insecurity in elderly men, and age, low income, having social security benefits and feeling poor in elderly women were significantly related to a higher tendency to program participation. CONCLUSIONS: The predisposing and need factors, such as living without spouse, low education level, food insecurity and feeling poor were important for program participation, as well as enabling factors, such as household income and social security benefits. A comprehensive approach considering these factors to identify the target population for food assistance programs is needed to increase the effectiveness and target population penetration of these programs.
The RTAs with trade facilitation provisions have been expected to generate a larger net trade-creating effect and complement the discriminatory feature of RTAs but have yet to be empirically proven. Recognizing the limitations of existing studies, we conducted a quantitative analysis on the effects of RTAs with and without trade facilitation provisions on both intra- and extra-bloc trade by using a modified gravity equation. We applied the Poisson Pseudo-Maximum Likelihood (PPML) estimation with time varying exporter and importer fixed effect method to panel data consisting of 45,770 country pairs covering 170 countries for 2000-2010. We found that the trade facilitation provisions in existing RTAs are non-discriminatory by generating more intra- and extra-bloc trade in general. In particular, we found that the trade effects of RTAs in the APEC region are much stronger than the general case covering all RTAs in the world. In addition, as we control the trade effect of a country's trade facilitation, which is ranked by the World Bank's logistic performance index, RTAs consisting of trade facilitation provisions are discriminatory for trade in final goods and non-discriminatory for trade in intermediate goods. Overall, we endeavor to "explain," instead of "hypothesizing," why most of the recent RTAs contain trade facilitation provisions, especially in light of the deepening regional interdependence through trade in parts and components under global value chains and support the necessity of multilateralizing RTAs by implementing non-discriminatory trade facilitation provisions.
The purpose of the study is to examine the use of medication among adults by comparing the pattern of outpatient prescription drug use with the pattern of long term taking lifestyle drug use. Furthermore, the study investigates factors associated with the use of medication, particularity focusing on socioeconomic factors. Korea Health Panel data of 2008 was used to conduct the study analysis. By performing four different logistic regression models, the study noticed different patterns of the medication use between prescription drugs and lifestyle drugs. More specifically, the study showed that adults with lower education level tend to more frequently receive prescriptions while adults with higher education as well as income level tend to more use lifestyle drugs than their counterparts. Furthermore, other control factors such as age and gender were statistically significant for the use of both prescription and lifestyle drugs in different patterns. The study findings expect that reimbursement structure of drugs may be significantly associated with the different patterns and accordingly the accessability of medicine in particularly vulnerable population. Therefore, these policy factors should be considered in future study to more comprehensively understand about the diverse patterns in the medication use.
