  • Objective: The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of Paljung-san on lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Methods: We researched four men with BPH and LUTS, who were treated 3 times a day for 10 days with Paljung-san. The International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) and post void residual urine (PVR) were evaluated. Results: The mean decrease in IPSS total score was 13 points (P=0.007, Mann-Whitney test). The reduction of IPSS was more prominent in the obstructive subscore but was not significant (P=0.057, Mann-Whitney test). Furthermore, Paljung-san reduced PVR. Conclusions: After the 10-day treatment period, Paljung-san improved total IPSS score, especially in the obstructive subscale score, and reduced post void residual urine.

  • Hiccup is a common clinical symptom, and may be caused from over 100 medical origins. Generally hiccup happens temporarily, and continues only a few seconds or minutes, and is cured easily by physical methods or even by itself. But in some cases, hiccup is so refractory that patients may be tired and very troubled by it. At worst, it may cause death. Intractable hiccup is defined as hiccup persisting for more than 48 hours, and this appears in various diseases. Persistent hiccup is very difficult to treat by conventional methods. A 69-year-old man was admitted due to intractable hiccup without gastroenteral system abnormalities or peripheral nervous systemic involvement. So Paljung-san(八正散) was prescribed. The intensity and frequency of hiccup dramatically improved.

  • Objective: The aim of this study is to describe the effects of Paljung-san on a patient with a catheter-associated urinary tract infection following a cerebral stroke. Methods: The patient was treated with herbal medicine (Paljung-san), and the effects of the treatment were evaluated using blood laboratory tests (C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and white blood cell count) and routine urine analysis. Results: After treatment, the patient's level of infection, as determined by the blood laboratory test and urine analysis, also improved. Conclusion: The results suggest that herbal medicine (i.e., Paljung-san) may be effective for treating catheter-associated urinary tract infections.
