  • Background: Successful implementation of pain management procedures and guidelines in an institution depends very much on the acceptance of many levels of healthcare providers. Aim: The main purpose of this study was to determine the level of knowledge and attitudes regarding pain among nurses working in tertiary care in a local setting and the factors that may be associated with this. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional research study used a modified version of the Nurses' Knowledge and Attitudes Survey (NKAS) regarding pain. Basic demographic data were obtained for further correlation with the level of pain knowledge. Results: A total of 566 nurses, 34 male and 532 female, volunteered to participate in this study. The response rate (RR) was 76%, with an overall mean percentage score of $42.7{\pm}10.9$ (range: 5-92.5). The majority of participants were younger nurses below 40 years of age and more than 70% had worked for less than 10 years ($6.6{\pm}4.45$). Up to 92% had never had any formal education in pain management in general. The total mean score of correct answers was $58.6{\pm}9.58$, with oncology nursing staff scoring a higher percentage when compared with nurses from other general and critical care wards ($63.52{\pm}9.27$, p<0.045). Only 2.5% out of all participants obtained a score of 80% or greater. The majority of the oncology nurses achieved the expected competency level (p<0.03). Conclusions: The present findings give further support for the universal concern about poor knowledge and attitudes among nurses' related to the optimal management of pain. The results reflected that neither number of years working nor age influenced the level of knowledge or attitudes of the practising nurses. Oncology nursing staff consistently scored better than the rest of the cohort. This reflects that clinical experience helped to improve attitudes and knowledge concerning better pain management.

  • Polymyalgia rheumatica is characterized by bilateral shoulder or pelvic girdle pain, morning stiffness of greater than 45 minutes' duration, constitutional symptoms, an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate and a rapid response to prednisolone (${\leq}20mg/day$). Although it is not a rare disease, many cases might be neglected and treated inappropriately in pain clinics. We describe here two cases of polymyalgia rheumatica that was neglected and treated inappropriately.

  • The present study explores two relationships: first, between number of payment and payment option preference, and second, total sum and payment option preference, with pain of payment as a mediator variable. The analyses revealed that consumers who feel higher pain of payment preferred the pennies-a-day pricing to the aggregate pricing when the per-payment price is low. Consumers who experience higher pain of payment prefer to pay in small frequent installments because they feel the small per-payment price can be comparable to daily expense. Consumers who experienced higher pain of payment preferred aggregate pricing to pennies-a-day pricing when the per-payment price was high. When the per-payment price is high, it is no longer comparable to daily expense, thus leading to greater pain of payment among consumers. The study discusses the implications for mechanism of pain of payment on payment option preference.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to examine the relation between the obesity, life style and low back pain(LBP) in high school students and provide informations for developing the prevention of the low back pain. Methods : Participants were the 2nd grade students from one high school in An-san(268 students). Using a self-reported questionnaire, we collected data. And the data were analyzed by t-test, chi-square in SPSS Win 12.0 program. Results : 1. The experience rate of LBP for 268 high school students was 56.7%. 2. The experience rate of female students(61%) was significantly higher than the male students(50%). 3. Computer using time of males LBP group was significantly higher than the none-LBP group. 4. Body mass index(BMI) of females LBP group was significantly higher than the non-LBP group. Conclusions : This study showed that the experience rate of LBP among high school students was related to obesity and life style. Therefore, educational programs and policy for preventing low back pain are necessary.

The subjects of the study were 1,090 children from second grade to forth grade of three elementary schools of the Iksan city. The children were investigated by the questionnaire which consisted of seven items about the attitude toward the dentist, the attitude toward the dental treatment, the dental reatment experience, the number of times of dental treatment, the last time of the dental visit, pain of dental treatment, and fear of dental treatment. There were significant differences among the grades in the attitude toward the dental treatment and in the attitude toward the dentist (P<0.01). Second grade children had the most negative attitudes. But, there were no differences between boys and girls. Girls felt more pain and fear than boys (P<0.01). There were significant relationships between the pain and the attitude toward the dentist, between the pain and the attitude toward the dental treatment, between the fear and the attitude toward the dentist, and between the fear and the attitude toward the dental treatment (P<0.01, all). The number of dental visit had significant relationship with the attitude toward the dental treatment (P<0.05). There were significant relationships between the pain and the fear and between the attitude toward the dentist and the attitude toward the dental treatment.

  • Purpose: Pain caused by osteoarthritis is primarily nociceptive pain; however, it is considered that a component of this pain is due to neuropathic pain (NP). We investigated the effects of total hip arthroplasty (THA) in patients with NP diagnosed by the PainDETECT questionnaire. Materials and Methods: One hundred sixty-three hips (161 patients) were evaluated. All patients were asked to complete the PainDETECT questionnaire based on their experience with NP, and clinical scores were evaluated using the Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) Hip Score before and after THA. Results: The patients of 24.5% reported NP before THA; 5.5% reported NP 2 months after THA. Prior to THA, there was no significant correlation between the PainDETECT score and the radiographic severity; however, there was a significant correlation between the PainDETECT score and JOA score. NP at 2 months after THA was not significantly correlated with pain scores at 1 week after THA; however, a significant correlation was observed between the preoperative pain score and NP at 2 months after THA. Conclusion: THA was useful for relieving nociceptive pain and for relieving NP in patients with hip osteoarthritis. Preoperative pain was a risk factor for NP after THA. Controlling preoperative pain may be effective for reducing postoperative NP.

Results: We drew the result that 'SPACE model' which structuralize by 5 stages of suicide survivors' experience of SBSG of time path. SPACE model configured as follow: Stage1, Space in vacuum, the time to feel a sense of overwhelming feeling like pain, fear, alienation after loss of suicide, Stage2, Probing, when to find informations and resources to help survivors themselves, Stage3, Acclimation, having experiences empathy and healing as in SBSG, Stage4, Composure, accepting SBSG meaning as a part of their lives, loss of my family by suicide, and the beginning of bereavement, Stage5, Endurance, overcoming suffering through SBSG and try to help other survivors. Conclusions: SBSG is the opportunity for family survivors to overcome the pains from loss of suicide, shock, anger, grief, etc., and to empower them to help other suicide survivors.

  • The present study was designed to investigate the general characteristics of pain patients and to analyze the properties of Korean pain expression terms as a preliminary step in the development of a pain questionnaire. Questionnaires were administered to 73 adult patients (53 males, 20 females) with knee, ankle, neck, low back, and shoulder pain. The mean duration of pain was 16.2 months (SE=3.3). The results were as fellows : 1. The data show that there are over 30 words in the Korean language to describe the varieties of pain experience even within this small sample. 2, There was low significant relationship between present pain intensity using visual analogue scale and the selected numbers of pain words from the pain questionnaire (p<.01). 3. In order to separate basic factors, a principal component analysis with varimax rotation was performed. The principal component analysis produced 8 factors. The proportion of variance explained by these factors was $71.0\%$. The first factor accounting $26.8\%$ of the variance was labeled 'cruelty and fear related pain' ; second 'pain produced from deep tissue' : third 'skin-punctuating related pain' ; and fourth 'miscellaneous and complicated pain'. Results of this study might be utilitzed in developing a pain questionnaire for pain patients.
