This study was conducted to estimate influences of pesticides such as carbofuran[2,3-dihydro-2,2-dimethylbenzofuran-7-yl methyl carbamate] as an insecticide, and pyrazolate [4-(2,4-dichlorobenzolyl)-1,3-dimethyl-5-pyrazolyl-1,3-dimethyl-5-pyrazolyl-p-toluensulfonate], pyrazolate+pretilachlor [2-chlor-2,6-diethyl-N-(n-propoxyethyl) acetanilied] as herbicides on change in numbers of soil microorganisms and pH in planted and unplanted flooded rice paddy soils. The results of weekly investigated change of pH and populations of total bacteria, gram negative bacteria, anaerobic bacteria and fungi after treatments of pesticides were as follows : The change of pH in rice-planted soil gradually decreased in a matter of weeks after treatment with pesticide and the pH increased again from the sixth week, but no change of pH could be observed in nonplanted soil. The total numer of bacteria in the treated plots were slightly less than in the control plot, and the numbers decreased with increasing application rates of pesticides. But the microbial population increased in a matter of days after treatment with pesticide. Number of the gram negative bacteria until the sixth week after treatment of pesticide were fewer than control. The number in the carbofuran-treated plot decreased after a weeks after treatment, but numbers in plots treated with pyrazolate and pyrazolate+pretilachlor increased. The number of anaerobic bacteria in the treated plots were few by comparison with the untreated control, but the number increased after a weeks after treatment with pesticides. The populations of fungi in the carbofuran-treated plot were similar by comparison with the untreated control. The populations in the plots treated with pyrazolate and pyrazolate+pretilachlor decreased in 4 to 5 weeks with increase of application rate, but afterwards increased.

BACKGROUND: Methane($CH_4$) is considered as the secondmost potent greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide ($CO_2$). Methanogenesis is an enzyme-mediated multi-step process by methanogens. In the penultimate step, methylated Co-M is reduced by methyl Co-M reductase (MCR) to $CH_4$ involving a nickel-containing cofactor F430. The activity of MCR enzyme is dependent on the F430 and therefore, the bioavailability of Ni to methanogens is expected to influence MCR activity and $CH_4$ production in soil. In this study, different doses of EDTA(Ethylene Diamine Tetraacetic Acid) were applied in flooded soils to evaluate their suppression effect on methane production by chelating Ni of methanogenesis cofactor. METHODS AND RESULTS: EDTA was selected as chelating agents and added into wetland and rice paddy soil at the rates of 0, 25, 50, 75, and $100mmol\;kg^{-1}$ before 4-weeks incubation test. During the incubation, cumulative $CH_4$ production patterns were characterized. At the end of the experiment, soil samples were removed from their jars to analyze total soil Ni and water-soluble Ni content and methanogen abundance. Methane production from 100 mmol application decreased by 55 and 78% in both soils compared to that from 0 mmol. With increasing application rate of EDTA in both soils, water-soluble Ni concentration significantly increased, but total soil Ni and methanogen activities showed negative relationship during incubation test. CONCLUSION: The decrease in methane production with EDTA application was caused by chelating Ni of coenzyme F430 and inhibiting methanogenesis by methyl coenzyme M reductase. Consequently, EDTA application decreased uptake of Ni into methanogen, subsequently inhibited methanogen activities and reduced methane production in flooded soils.
An analysis was made on optimal N fertilizer for high yielding and ordinary rice varieties and their dependence upon the climatic conditions during growth stage in 1971-1979. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. The coefficient of variation for optimum N rates were 19.1% for high yielding varieties and 21.9% for ordinary varieties. And the those of yields at optimum N levels were 7.0% for high yielding varieties and 9.9% for ordinary varieties. 2. Optimum N fertilizer rates for high yielding varieties were 22.4kg/10a in favorable climatic years and 16.1kg/10a in unfavorable climatic years. As for ordinary varieties, optimum N levels were 19.2kg/10a in favorable climatic years and 13.0kg/10a in unfavorable climatic years. Accordingly, more N should be applied in favorable climatic years regardless of varieties. 3. This difference was derived from sunshine hours, rainfall, and relative humidity. Optimum N rates were correlated positively with sunshine hours, and negatively with rainfall and relative humidity.
An increased population and rapidly expanding industrial development have led to enormous amounts of various domestic and industrial wastes. The proper disposal of ever-increasing wastes is a growing global problem. Land treatment is one of the rational approaches that are environmentally safe and economically practical. It has long been practised in many sites. Recycling of industrial wastes on agricultural land can provide better possible means for maintaining environmental quality and utilizing waste-resources. Even though industrial wastes are beneficial as soil amendment and fertilizer, they have some limitation on land application because of wide variability as well as physicochemical problem in their composition. A direct application of solid and liquid wastes on land is being practised in Korea and some experimental results are presented. The direct application of fermentation waste on rice resulted in a 6 percent yield increase. Another organic residue from glutamic acid fermentation is widely used not only as a direct application as a liquid fertilizer but also for a raw material of organic compound fertilizer. These wastes are much promising as sources of plant nutrients, since they have large amounts of nutrients, especially nitrogen with few toxic metals. On the other hand, fertilizers developed from inorganic industrial wastes include calcium silicate, calcium sulfate and ammonium sulfate. The calcium silicate fertilizer simply produced from slag, by-product of iron and steel manufacturing plant is one of the most successful example of the conversion of wastes to fertilizer and slag production capacity totals to over three million MT/year. About 200,000 MT of calcium silicate fertilizer is currently applied in the paddy rice every year. Calcium sulfate, a waste from the wet phosphoric acid process is to some extent used as a filler of compound fertilizers but quite large quantites are directly applied for the reclamation of tidal flat.
Gibberella fujikuroi(imperfect stage Fusarium moniforme) a soil fungi is well known as the producer of plant growth regulator Gibberellins. The present work was planned for the isolation of the active strains of Gibberella fujikuroi from the native paddy soils. Twenty two strains were isolated from the infected rice seedlings collected from four local areas. Pyongtaek, Yesan, Tangjin and Sunchon and screened through the activity test for the production of Gibberellins. The strains P-105, Y-14 and T-58 yielded higher activity than the others isolated and the referred strain IAM-8048. The strains Y-5, Y-7, T-54 and S-152, however, were less promotive or rather inhibitory in the growth of rice seedlings. Six different kinds of culture media developed by Cross, Raulin-Thom, Borrow, West, Stodola and Kurosawa respectively were compared with each other for the production of Gibberellins and the best result was obtained with Raulin-Thom's media(glucose 16% and $NH_4NO_3$ 0.24%).
This research was carried out to determine the effect of controlling nitrogen application on tiller development, yield, and quality of rice under scanty or excess seedling stands in direct-seeded rice on flooded soil surface. Seedling stand was set to 3 levels: scanty $(60/m^2)$, optimum $(120/m^2)$, and excess $(200/m^2)$. In the scanty plot, additional 4 kg/10a nitrogen was applied at the 3rd leaf stage to promote tiller development. On the other hand, applying 3.3 kg/10a nitrogen at 5th leaf stage in the excess plot was omitted to suppress tillering. Maximum numbers of tillers per plant were 15.2 and 8.6 in scanty and excess plots, respectively, as compared with 9.8 in optimum plot. Productive tiller rate decreased with the increase in number of seedling stands. Regardless of seedling density, the first tiller developed on the 3rd node of rice stem from the bottom. The primary tillers developed at 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 nodes in scanty plot, 3, 4, 5 nodes in optimum plot, and 3, 4 nodes in excess plot. The secondary tillers developed only in some portion of plants in scanty and optimum plots. The order of tiller emergence was negatively correlated to stem length, panicle length, non-productive tiller number, grain number per panicle, and fertility in scanty plot, and to perfect grain ratio in excess plot. In the optimum plot, however, the order of tiller emergence was not correlated to any of the mentioned characteristics. The perfect grain ratio of scanty plot was the highest because green-kerneled rice was a very small portion in the primary tillers as compared with those of optimum and excess plots. Yield indexes of scanty and excess plots were 99%, and 97%, respectively, of the yield (494 kg/10a) in optimum plot. In conclusion, when seedling stands are not at optimum level, rice yield and quality similar to optimum planting density level can be obtained by means of controlling nitrogen application.
The potassium equilibrium activity ratio ($AR^k_e$) and energies of exchange for replacement of ca+Mg by K ($E_k$) were measured for seven paddy soils to investigate their correlations with the exchangeable K (Kex) and uptake of K at different growth stages of rice plant. It was found that $AR^k_e$ had highly significant correlations at 1% level with uptake of K at maximum tillering, heading and harvesting stages, and also with Kex in soils at maximum tillering stage. The larger $AR^k_e$ of soils, the more uptake of K by rice plant. The fact indicates that uptake of K by the plant can be characterized in terms of $AR^k_e$ or energy of exchange of soils. In aspect of energy of exchange, higher uptake of K and yield of grain were observed from -2500 to -3000 calories per chemical equivalent, representing suitable balances between K and Ca+Mg in soils. Low uptake of K was observed at the energies of exchange below -3500 calories per chemical equivalent, which were prevalent in the ordinary acidic soils. From the correlations between energy of exchange and Kex, it can be concluded that at least 0.37 meq. of exchangeable K should be existed in 100g of dried acidic soil to keep suitable balances of K and Ca+Mg. The result shown that application of K adsorbed zeolite to paddy soils increased $AR^k_e$ and consequently brought about higher K uptake and grain yield. Therefore, a reasonable way recommended to get good balance of exchangeable K in the soil is applying 1.7 tonns of K adsorbed zeolite containing 60kg $K_2O$ per hectare.
Producing organic farm products is one of the high-payoff farming practices considering the rapid increase of consumer's purchasing power. The purpose of this study is to identify the optimal organic farming system in relation to farm income. To cope with the above objectives, present farming conditions and profitability of 15 farmers producing organic products including rice and leaf vegetables as lettuse and cabbage were surveyed in Hongsung and Ahsan Gun, Chungnam Province. Based on the surveyed data, maximization of organic farm income were analyzed under the constrained conditions such as limited monthly labour inputs and competitive use of land by Linear Programming Model. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. 1. In the profitability analysis of 15 farmers producing organic products, rice farmers could earn their farm income more than that of conventional farmers by 50%. On the other hand, the controlled lettuce farmers could get more about 100% than that of it. But the controlled cabbage farm could get more about 40% of it. These organic farm products were saled at high prices comparing with the prices of conventional farm products by 170% ~ 230% even though the crop yields produced by organic materials had decreased. 2. According to the labor requirement of the organically produced crops, rice cultivation was needed more labour inputs than the conventional farming method by 130%. On the other hand lettuce and cabbage could saved labour requirement by 40% and 80% of those respectively. Especially for the rice cultivation concern, higher labor requirement was due to the activities as organic fertilization, soil preparation and pest and weed controll, etc. 3. With the surveyed data from farmers who produced farm commodities, L.P. analysis was implemented to find out the optimul farming system and the maximum income. According to the results of L.P. analysis, 58% of total farm income could get more than the conventional farming system In the case of rice cultivation, one ha of paddy was recommendable to save more labour inputs than the controlled leaf vegetables such as lettuse and cabbage. However, in the controlled leaf vegatables, only 73% of total upland equivalent to 0.3 ha should be cultivated under the condition of labor shortage as the restricted 4 workers. And increasing the size of hogs raising should be recommened to achieve self-sufficiency of organic fertilizer. As pointed out the possibility of organic farming, present farmers producing organic farm products could be able to maximize their income by expanding organic farm size with regard to all conditions of our organic industry. Of course, there are many difficulties in the course of developing organic agriculture. So Government should effort to support the development of our organic agriculture considering the various aspects of production, marketing, Quality certification of organic produces.
Climate change is considered as the greatest threat to our future and descendants. The Korean government has set a target for 2030 to reduce emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs) by 37% from the business-as-usual levels which are projected to reach 851 million metric tons of $CO_2eq$ (Carbon dioxide equivalent). In Korea, GHGs emission from agriculture account for almost 3.1% of the total of anthropogenic GHGs. The GHGs emitted from agricultural land are largely classified into three types: carbon dioxide ($CO_2$), methane ($CH_4$), and nitrous oxide ($N_2O$). In Korea, rice paddies are one of the largest agricultural $CH_4$ sources. In order to analyze domestic research trends related to $CH_4$ emission from rice paddies, 93 academic publications including peer reviewed journals, books, working papers, reports, etc., published from 1995 to September 2017, were critically reviewed. The results were classified according to the research purposes. $CH_4$ characteristics and assessment were found to account for approximately 65.9% of the research trends, development of $CH_4$ emission factors for 9.5%, $CH_4$ emission reduction technology for 14.8%, and $CH_4$ emission modeling for 6.3%, etc. A number of research related to $CH_4$ emission characteristics and assessment have been studied in recent years, whereas further study on $CH_4$ emission factors are required to determine an accurate country-specific GHG emission from rice paddies. Future research should be directed toward both studies for reducing the release of $CH_4$ from rice paddies to the atmosphere and the understanding of the major controlling factors affecting $CH_4$ emission.

To reduce water input by water-saving irrigation techniques a field study was carried out with three water managements, very shallow intermittent irrigation (VSII, 2cm), shallow intermittent irrigation (SII, 4cm) and traditional deep water irrigation (DWI, 10cm) for two years. Rice growth and grain yields of three water managements were not significantly different. However, when the water irrigation depth was decreased, the breaking and lodging resistance were increased and the roots were widely distributed into deeper paddy soil. More numbers of both annual and perennial weeds were occurred in VSII than in DWI at maximum heading stage and only the number of perennial weeds was three times in VSII than in DWI at heading stage. The total water inputs were 777, 654 and 527 mm in DWI, SII and VSII, therefore the water-saving rates of VSII and SII were $32.2\%\;and\;15.9\%$ compared to typical deep water irrigation. The water-productivity (Rice yield to water input) was highest in VSII as 0.94 and followed by SII as 0.76 and DWI as 0.63. In the face of water scarcity, it is very important to find or develope water saving irrigation system and find ways to increase the productivity of water used for rice cultivation.
