Quality-of-Service Mechanisms for Flow-Based Routers

  • In this paper, we propose quality of service mechanisms for flow-based routers which have to handle several million flows at wire speed in high-speed networks. Traffic management mechanisms are proposed for guaranteed traffic and non-guaranteed traffic separately, and then the effective harmonization of the two mechanisms is introduced for real networks in which both traffic types are mixed together. A simple non-work-conserving fair queuing algorithm is proposed for guaranteed traffic, and an adaptive flow-based random early drop algorithm is proposed for non-guaranteed traffic. Based on that basic architecture, we propose a dynamic traffic identification method to dynamically prioritize traffic according to the traffic characteristics of applications. In a high-speed router system, the dynamic traffic identification method could be a good alternative to deep packet inspection, which requires handling of the IP packet header and payload. Through numerical analysis, simulation, and a real system experiment, we demonstrate the performance of the proposed mechanisms.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient and QoS-aware MAC scheduling algorithm for Bluetooth, which considers both throughput and delay performance of each Master-Slave pair in scheduling decisions, and thus, attempts to maximize overall performance. The proposed algorithm, MTDPP (Modified Throughput-Delay Priority Policy), makes up for the drawbacks of T-D PP (Throughput-Delay Priority Policy) proposed in [6] and improves the performance. Since Bluetooth employs a master-driven TDD based scheduling algorithm, which is basically operated with the Round Robin policy, many slots may be wasted by POLL or NULL packets when there is no data waiting for transmission in queues. To overcome this link wastage problem, several algorithms have been proposed. Among them, queue state-based priority policy and low power mode-based algorithm can perform with high throughput and reasonable fairness. However, their performances may depend on traffic characteristics, i.e., static or dynamic, and they require additional computational and signaling overheads. In order to tackle such problems, we propose a new scheduling algorithm. Performance of our proposed algorithm is evaluated with respect to throughput and delay. Simulation results show that overall performances can be improved by selecting suitable parameters of our algorithm.

The Development of New dynamic WRR Algorithm for Wireless Sensor Networks (무선 센서망을 위한 새로운 동적 가중치 할당 알고리즘 개발)

  • The key of USN(Ubiquitous Sensor Network) technology is low power wireless communication technology and proper resource allocation technology for efficient routing. The distinguished resource allocation method is needed for efficient routing in sensor network. To solve this problems, we propose an algorithm that can be adopted in USN with making up for weak points of PQ and WRR in this paper. The proposed algorithm produces the control discipline by the fuzzy theory to dynamically assign the weight of WRR scheduler with checking the Queue status of each class in sensor network. From simulation results, the proposed algorithm improves the packet loss rate of the EF class traffic to 6.5% by comparison with WRR scheduling method and that of the AF4 class traffic to 45% by comparison with PQ scheduling method.

PM-MAC : An Efficient MAC Protocol for Periodic Traffic Monitoring In Wireless Sensor Networks (무선 센서 네트워크에서 주기적인 트래픽의 효율적인 모니터링을 위한 MAC 프로토콜)

  • In this paper we suggest a scheduling algorithm that transmits periodic traffics efficiently in tree-structured wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The related research[l] showed the problems such as increasing the energy consumption and decreasing the data throughput as the depth of tree increases. To solve these problems. we use idle time slots and avoid the redundancy at data transmission. Also we suggest the algorithm that transmits the control packet when it is similar to a previously measured data. And if emergency data is occurred, our proposed algorithm transits that data in EDP(Emergency Data Period) for reducing the wait time. The proposed algorithm shows more data throughput and less energy consumption than that of the related research.

  • 본 논문에서는 IoT 환경의 무선 센서 네트워크 시스템 상의 효율적인 패킷 전달을 위해 큐러닝(Q-learning)에 기반한 다중 대기열 동적 스케쥴링 기법을 제안한다. 이 정책은 다중 대기열(Multiple queue)의 각 큐가 요구하는 딜레이 조건에 맞춰 최대한 패킷 처리를 미룸으로써 효율적으로 CPU자원을 분배한다. 또한 각 노드들의 상태를 큐러닝(Q-learning)을 통해 지속적으로 상태를 파악하여 기아상태(Starvation)를 방지한다. 제안하는 기법은 무선 센서 네트워크 상의 가변적이고 예측 불가능한 환경에 대한 사전지식이 없이도 요구하는 서비스의 질(Quality of service)를 만족할 수 있도록 한다. 본 논문에서는 모의실험을 통해 기존의 학습 기반 패킷 스케쥴링 알고리즘과 비교하여 제안하는 스케쥴링 기법이 복잡한 요구조건에 따라 유연하고 공정한 서비스를 제공함에 있어 우수함을 증명하였다.

  • In this paper, we propose a delay reduction method for frame-based packet transmit scheduling algorithm. A high-speed network such as ATM network has to provide some performance guarantees such as bandwidth and delay bound. Framing strategy naturally guarantees bandwidth and enables simple rate-control while having the inherently bad delay characteristics. The proposed delay reduction method uses the same hierarchical frame structure as HRR (Hierarchical Round-Robin) but does not use the static priority scheme such as round-robin. Instead, we use a dynamic priority change scheme so that the delay unfairness between wide bandwidth connection and narrow bandwidth connection can be eliminated. That is, we use FIFO (First-In First-Out) concept to effectively reduce the occurrence of worst-case delay and to enhance delay distribution. We compare the performance for the proposed algorithm with that of HRR. The analytic and simulation results show that HFIFO inherits almost all merits of HRR with fairly better delay characteristics.

A Stabilized Queue Management Algorithm for Internet Congestion Control (인터넷 혼잡제어를 위한 안정적인 큐 관리 알고리즘)

  • In order to reduce the increasing packet loss rates caused by an exponential increase in network traffic, the IETF(Internet Engineering Task Force) is considering the deployment of active queue management techniques such as RED(Random Early Detection). But, RED configuration has been a problem since its first proposal. This problem is that proposed configuration is only good for the particular traffic conditions studied, but may have detrimental effects if used in other conditions. While active queue management in routers and gateways can potentially reduce packet loss rates in the Internet, this paper has demonstrated the inherent weakness of current techniques and shows that they are unstable for tile various traffic conditions. The inherent problem with these queue management algorithms is that they all use static parameter setting. In this paper, in order to solve this problem, a new active queue management algorithm called SQM(Stabilized Queue Management) is proposed. This paper shows that it is easy to parameterize SQM algorithm to perform well under different congestion scenarios. This algorithm can effectively reduce packet loss while maintaining high link utilizations and is good for the various traffic conditions.

Novel Bandwidth Scheduling Algorithm for DOCSIS 3.0 Based Multiple Upstream Channels (DOCSIS 3.0 기반의 다중 상향 채널 환경에서 새로운 대역 스케줄링 알고리즘 제안)

  • In this paper, we propose an novel bandwidth scheduling algorithm for the MAC protocol employed by the Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications (DOCSIS) 3.0 compliant cable networks. The proposed algorithm statistically improves the chances of request piggybacking to minimize the access delay. It utilizes the piggyback request feature of the segment packets that has been newly specified in DCOSIS 3.0. In DOCSIS 3.0, a bandwidth request can be granted to several upstream channels within an upstream bonding group. The grant on each individual channel is treated as a segment packet. We find the optimal segment placement to minimize the access delay in the proposed algorithm. We also use a self-similar traffic model for simulation and analysis to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm.

  • 본 연구의 내용은 실시간 서비스 트래픽, 즉 보장형 서비스를 위한 스케줄링 알고리즘들에 대한 성능분석에 대한 연구이다. 특히 실시간 데이터 전송의 경우, 작은 지연 시간을 요구하면서 안정된 QoS를 요구하고 있다. 기존에 알려진 FQ, WFQ, WF2Q, Virtual Clock 스케줄링 알고리즘들을 사용해서 대기 큐의 수학적 모델이 아닌 시뮬레이션 도구를 사용해서, 지연에 민감한 보장형 서비스 트래픽에 대한 시간 복잡도, 공정성, 처리율 측면으로 성능을 분석하였다.
