Static and Dynamic FEM Simulation of Packaging Tray Cup Pad for Korean Pears

  • Among the many packaging materials used in cushion packaging, there is a lack of optimum design for the tray cup pad used in fruit packaging for export and domestic distribution. It causes over-packaging due to excessive material input, and this could be solved by applying various parameters needed to optimize the design of the tray cup pad considering the packaging material and the quantity of fruits in the box. In the case of a tray cup for fruits, the economic efficiency of material and thickness should be considered. Therefore, it is possible to design a tray cup pad depending on the packaging material used by applying appropriate design parameters. The static and dynamic characteristics of the materials used for packaging of pears were analyzed by using the FEM (finite element Method) simulation technique to derive the optimal design parameters. And by applying the appropriate design parameters considering the quantity of fruit and distribution environment, it is possible to design an appropriate fruit tray cup pad. In this study, as a result of simulating the contact stresses between the fruit and the tray cup for the PP, PE, and PS materials used in the fruit tray cup, the material with the lowest contact stress was PP and the value was found to be 398 Pa. The contact displacement between fruit and tray cup using this material was about 0.0463 mm, which was the lowest value compared with other materials. Also the resonance frequency band of tray cup made of PP material was below 36.81 Hz, and the strain energy was below 12.20 J. The resonant frequency band of the pear is more than 80 Hz and it could be applied to all the tray cup materials as compared with the resonance band of 38.81 Hz or less which is the resonance band of all tray cup pads for packaging. Finally, PP is the most suitable material for the tray cup pad.

  • Among the many packaging materials used in cushion packaging, there is a lack of optimum design for packaging trays and cushion pads used in pear packaging for export and domestic distribution. It causes over-packaging due to excessive material input, and can be solved by applying various parameters needed to optimize the design of the packaging tray and cushion pad considering the packaging material and the number of pears in the box. In the case of a cushion pad for pears, the economic efficiency of material and thickness should be considered. Therefore, it is possible to design a packaging tray and cushion pad depending on eco-friendly packaging materials (PLA, PET) used by applying appropriate design parameters. The static characteristics of the materials used for the packaging of pears were analyzed using FEA (finite element analysis) simulation technique to derive the optimal design parameters. In this study, we analyzed the contact stress and deformation of PET, PLA tray (0.1, 0.5 1.0, 1.5 and 2 mm) and PET foam (2.0, 3 .0 and 4.0 mm) with pears to derive appropriate cushion packaging design factors. The contact stress between the pear and PET foam pad placed on PLA, PET trays were simulated by FEA considering the bioyield strength (192.54±28 kPa) of the pears and safety factor (5) of packaging design, which is the criterion of damage to the pears. For the combination of PET tray and PET foam buffer pad, the thickness of the PET foam is at least 3 mm, the thickness of the PET foam is at least 1.0 mm, the thickness of the foam is at least 2 mm, and if the thickness of the PET tray is at least 1.5 mm, the thickness of the foam is at least 1 mm, suitable for the packaging design. In addition, for the combination of PLA tray and PET foam pad, the thickness of the PET foam was not less than 2 mm if the thickness of the PLA tray was 0.5 mm, and 1 mm or more if the thickness of the PLA tray was not less than 1.0 mm, the thickness of the PET foam was suitable for the packaging design.

멜론 포장용 펄프몰드 난좌 개발 (The Development of Pulp Mold Tray for Melon Packaging)

  • 본 연구에서 개발된 멜론용 펄프몰드난좌의 진동전달특성을 구명하고 모의수송시험을 통해 적합성을 분석하였다. 멜론 펄프몰드 난좌의 중량이 증가할수록 압축강도는 상승하였고, 완충성능이 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. RMS 평균 가속도의 진동전달률을 살펴보면 펄프몰드 난좌의 중량이 증가할수록 진동전달률이 감소하는 경향을 보였다. 골판지 180 g 신문고지 50 g을 배합한 펄프몰드난좌의 경우 가진되는 진동가속도보다 큰 진동가속도가 전달되는 것으로 나타나 멜론의 포장에 적합하지 않은 것으로 나타났고, 골판지 200 g 신문고지 50 g을 배합한 펄프몰드난좌의 진동전달률이 가장 작게 나타나 멜론의 포장에 가장 적합한 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 기존 상자포장보다는 펄프몰드난좌 포장 시 진동의 전달이 작은 것을 알 수 있었으며, 펄프몰드 난좌의 중앙에 위치한 멜론과 비교하여 주변에 위치한 멜론에 전달되는 진동가속도가 큰 것을 알 수 있었다. 기존 상자포장과 펄프몰드난좌 포장의 모의 수송시험을 실시하여 경도를 측정한 결과, 무가진 멜론에 비하여 경도저하가 나타났지만, 난좌를 이용하여 포장하였을 때 기존 상자포장에 비하여 멜론의 경도 유지 효과가 우수함을 알 수 있었다. 따라서 본 연구결과 펄프몰드 난좌를 이용한 멜론포장은 수송 중 진동에 의한 품질저하 요인을 감소시켜 상품성 유지에 효과적인 방법이라 판단된다.

신선편의식품 포장기술 (Packaging technology of fresh-cut produce)

  • Processing steps such as washing and cutting, involved in preparing fresh-cut produce causes tissue damage, leading to rapid quality deterioration. Major defects of fresh-cut produce are discoloration, softening, off-odor development, and microbial growth. Packaging of fresh-cut produce has been changed to reduce these quality problems. Flexible packaging film is widely used to pack fresh-cut produce. Vacuum packaging was the popular packaging method in the beginning of fresh-cut industry in Korea. Vacuum packaging creates high $CO_2$ and low $O_2$ levels to control browning of fresh-cut produce. However, these conditions induce some visual defects and off-odor development. Discoloration problem was also found when fresh-cut produce was packaged with conventional packaging film or plastic tray. Modified atmosphere (MA) packaging is effective for prolonging shelf-life of fresh-cut produce by decreasing $O_2$ and increasing $CO_2$ concentration in the package. Retail MA packaging using different oxygen transmission rate (OTR) film and micro-perforated film has started to be applied to fresh-cut produce in Korea. Proper MA package design that provides optimum range of $O_2$ and $CO_2$ partial pressures is one of the major challenges in the industry. An initial package flushing with $N_2$ or an low $O_2$/high $CO_2$ atmosphere is also used to more rapidly establish steady-state MA condition. Film OTR and $O_2$ flushing affects the fermentative volatile production, off-odor development, electrolyte leakage, discoloration, $CO_2$ injury, microbial population of fresh-cut produce. There is also a demand for convenient packaging to attract consumers. Rigid fresh-cut produce container for retail market has increased since the packaging provides excellent protection from physical damage during transport. Rigid tray used as actual serving vessel for the consumer is increasing in Korea. The tray with flexible lid to wrap or seal fresh-cut produce is more and more gaining popularity. Further practical technology to control quality change and microbial growth for each fresh-cut product has been studied since various fresh-cut items were required. The fresh-cut industry also focuses on searching for more convenient and environmentally friendly packaging.

큰느타리의 품질 등급, 손질 및 포장 방법에 따른 유통 수명 (Effects of quality grade, trimming, and packaging method on shelf life of king oyster mushrooms)

  • 큰느타리의 수출시 유통 기한 연장을 목적으로 수확시 품질 등급, 대와 자실체 사이를 잘라낸 손질 처리 유무, 그리고 관행 OPP 봉지에 끈묶음한 포장 방법을 개선시켜 트레이용기에 넣은 후 밀봉처리시 효과를 구명하고자 하였다. 수확시 품질 등급은 수확전 재배사의 온도를 9~11℃ 낮추어 적응시킨 버섯을 특품으로, 관행 13~15℃로 적응시킨 버섯을 상품으로 설정하였다. 선별한 특품과 상품 버섯을 이용하여 손질 및 포장방법으로 3처리구를 두었다. 첫째는 절단 손질 후 OPP 봉지에 넣어 끈묶음한 포장(Cut & OPP), 둘째는 손질하지 않고 OPP 봉지에 넣어 끈묶음한 포장(Uncut & OPP), 마지막으로 개선포장방법으로 절단 손질한 후 트레이용기에 넣고 밀봉한 포장(Cut & Tray)이었다. 포장 완료한 버섯 처리구를 0℃ 저장고에 42일간 보관하면서 포장 내부의 기체 조성, 품질 요인의 변화, 신선 품질에 대한 관능평가를 실시하였다. 특품과 상품의 버섯 모두 Cut & Tray, Cut & OPP, 그리고 Uncut & OPP 처리 순으로 전반적으로 신선도가 높게 유지되었다. 특품 버섯의 유통 수명은 Cut & Tray 처리의 경우 30일, Cut & OPP 처리의 경우 28일, Uncut & OPP 처리의 경우 21일이었고, 상품 버섯의 유통 수명은 Cut & Tray 처리시 22일, Cut & OPP 처리시 17일, 그리고 Uncut & OPP 처리시 14 일이었다. 신선 버섯의 품질에 영향을 미치는 요인은 갓과 대의 갈변과 부패 지수였다. 특히, 버섯 대의 아랫부분의 갈변과 그에 연관된 표피색 a*값과 b*값의 변화가 품질 저하의 주요인이었다.
