Followings are the results of growth of Pacific oysters transplanted from the temperate waters of Korea in February 1981, and cultivated upto early July in the tropical waters of Ambong Bay in Malaysia: The shell length increased from 5.78 mm in February to 25.01 mm in July, and the shell height increased from 7.33 mm in february to 38.91mm in July. The meat weight progressively increased and reached the maximum value of 1.66g in May, but then gradually decreased until July, and the fatness varied from $28\%$ of maximum in March to $11\%$ of minimum in July-Survival rate was $47\%\;and\;39\%$ of the initial number in June and July respectively.
We examined changes in the shell valve movements (SVMs) of Mytilus edulis and Crassostrea gigas using a Hall element sensor to investigate the early detection of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium pacificum. No increase or decrease was observed in SVMs caused by the non-toxic algae Isochrysis galbana in both M. edulis and C. gigas. However, when M. edulis and C. gigas were exposed to A. pacificum, which causes paralytic shellfish poisoning, the average SVMs for 12 hours before and after exposure increased from 1.25 times/hr to 2.13 times/hr and 2.23 times/hr to 8.91 times/hr, respectively. After exposure to A. pacificum, the SVMs of M. edulis increased rapidly within 1 hour and then decreased gradually. However, C. gigas showed high SVMs until 4 hours after exposure. SVMs of C. gigas appeared to be more sensitive to toxic dinoflagellate than those of M. edulis. Therefore, these results are expected to be used as basic data for the establishment of a biological monitoring system for early detection of the toxic dinoflagellate A. pacificum.
Tributyltin (TBT) and its degradation products, dibutyltin (DBT) and monobutyltin (MBT) were quantitatively determined in surface sediments and two molluscan species, Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) and rock shell (Thais ctavigera), from Gwangyang Bay, Korea. Butyltin compounds were detectable in almost all sediment and biota samples. Tributyltin concentrations in surface sediment ranged<2∼33 ng g$\^$-1/, which is at a lower end of TBT concentrations in industrialized bays in Korea. However, TBT levels in sediments were related to boating activities around the bay. In biota samples, TBT concentrations were in the range of 178∼2,458 ng g$\^$-1/ toy oyster and 47∼236 ng g$\^$-1/ for rock shell. Relatively high TBT concentrations in biota were found near wharves for fisherboats and harbor areas. About 90∼100% of the female T. clavigera displayed imposex, and relative penis length index of the imposexed-female was in the range of 20.9∼107.9%. Furthermore, TBT body residue had a significant positive relationship with degree of imposex in T. clavigera. Overall, TBT concentrations in Gwanyang Bay were much lower than other major bays in Korea.
The efficiency of energy transfer by a population of the farmed pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas was studied during culture period of 10 months July 1979-April 1980, in Geoje-Hansan Bay near Chungmu City. Energy use by the farmed oyster population was calculated from estimates of half-a-month unit age specific natural mortality rate and data on growth, gonad output, shell organic matter production and respiration. Total mortality during the culture period was estimated approximate $36\%$ from data on survivor individual number per cluster. Growth may be dual consisted of a curved line during the first half culture period (July-November) and a linear line in the later half period (December-April). The first half growth was approximated by the von Bertalanffy growth model; shell height, $SH=6.33\;(1-e^{0.2421(t+0.54)})$, where t is age in half-a-month unit. In the later half growth period shell height was related to t by SH=4.44+0.14t. Dry meat weight (DW) was related to shell height by log $DW=-2.2907+2.589{\cdot}log\;SH,\;(2, and/or log $DW=-5.8153+7.208{\cdot}log\;SH,\;(5. Size specific gonad output (G) as calculated by condition index of before and after the spawning season, was related to shell height by $G=0.0145+(3.95\times10^{-3}{\times}SH^{2.9861})$. Shell organic matter production (SO) was related to shell height by log $SO=-3.1884+2.527{\cdot}1og\;SH$. Size and temperature specific respiration rate (R) as determined in biotron system with controlled temperature, was related to dry meat weight and temperature (T) by log $R=(0.386T-0.5381)+(0.6409-0.0083T){\cdot}log\;DW$. The energy used in metabolism was calculated from size, temperature specific respiration and data on body composition. The calorie contents of oyster meat were estimated by bomb calorimetry based on nitrogen correction. The assimilation efficiency of the oyster estimated directly by a insoluble crude silicate method gave $55.5\%$. From the information presently available by other workers, the assimilation efficiency ranges between $40\%\;and\;70\%$. Twenty seven point four percent of the filtered food material expressed by energy value for oyster population was estimated to have been rejected as pseudofaeces : $17.2\%$ was passed as faeces; $35.04\%$ was respired and lost as heat; $0.38\%$ was bounded up in shell organics; $2.74\%$ was released as gonad output, $2.06\%$ was fell as meat reducing by mortality. The remaining $15.28\%$ was used as meat production. The net efficiency of energy transfer from assimilation to meat production (yield/assimilation) of a farm population of the oyster was estimated to be $28\%$ during culture period July 1979-April 1980. The gross efficiency of energy transfer from ingestion to meat production (yield/food filtered) is probably between $11\%\;and\;20\%$.
Digestibility index of 12 phytoplankton species were invested during the larval development sizes. Ingestible size of phytoplankton varied depending on larval sizes: Isochrysis galbana, I. aff. galbana, Pavlova lutheri, Chlorella ellipsoidea, Nannochloris oculata was ingested 94.2-99.7% all larval sizes. Cheatoceros calcitrans, C. gracilis and C. simplex could ingest over 90.0% after umbo stage (mean shell length $189.3{\pm}13.8{\mu}m$). Phaeodactylum triconutum, Dunaliella tertiolecta and Tetraselmis tetrathele could not ingested D-shaped larvae (shell length $65.0-100.0{\mu}m$) but ingested 97.3-99.7%, 43.3-99.3%, 48.5-99.3% after then larval stages, respectively. But Thalassiosira weissflogii was ingested 1.0-1.7% only at full grown stage. Over 50.0% ingestion cell size was D-shape stage larvae with smaller than mean $102.3{\mu}m$ in shell length could ingest phytoplankton with $4.6{\mu}m$ in both major and minor axis and up to $9.3{\mu}m$ in minor axis basis for larger than mean $158.3{\mu}m$ in shell length, respectively. At all larval stages, phytoplankton with larger than $10.0{\mu}m$ in both major and minor axis could not be ingested.

To introduce an oyster rack culture in tidal flat of Wando-gun, Korea, we investigated sanitary conditions from 2012 April to 2013 March in oyster growing waters and adjacent area in Wando. Average seawater temperature and salinity ranged $8.6-28.0^{\circ}C$ and 26.2-33.6 psu, respectively. The coliform group and fecal coliform of seawater ranged < 1.8-13.0 MPN/100 mL each. Only one of 60 samples was exceeded in the European criteria of fecal coliform. Influence of adjunct basin's pollution load on cultural waters was negligible, which half radius of dilution was not above 300 m. According to our observation, however, landing of oyster should be banned for at least 5 days after the heavy rainfall. Our findings meet the sanitary seawater criteria for domestic use and export of shellfish and classified as 'Class A' in European Community regulations for bivalve culture.
In order to investigate the possibility of yearly-harvest, we carried out growth experiment(shell height, meat weight and condition index) for of the artificial oyster spat, which suspended in three different times before the season for natural spat around coastal waters of Gyeongnam Province. Shell growth of spats suspended in June showed higher than those in April and May. In meat weight, the growth of spats was significantly elevated from October, of which significant difference was observed depending on growing farms(Gosung$\geq$80 mm) and October on the meat weight level($\geq$5 g).
Infection rates of oyster ovarian parasite, Marteiliodes chungmuensis and productivity of the oyster shellstock infected with the parasite were investigated at the main seed collection areas in the southern coast of Korea where the extreme bad seed collection of oyster occurred in 1992 and 1993 to evaluate the cause of the bad seed collection. Additionally, the bacterial flora of the sea water and oyster lana were examined to identify the shellfish larva pathogenic bacteria like Vibrio sp. and Pseueomonas sp. In August 1992 to September 1993, infection rate of oyster ovarian parasite, M. chungmuensis at Tongyong, Kyongsangnam province, and Yosu, Chollanam province where the bad seed collection occurred, were $11.8\~100\%$ and $14.3\~100\%$, respectively. But the parasite was not detected in the shellstock collected at Daechon, Chungchongnam province. While a virus-like particle was identified in the cytoplasm of the egg infected by the parasite. The parasite infected egg was not able to fertilize completely. Uninfected egg in the gonad contaminated by the parasite could be able to fertilize but showed an abnormal development till D-shaped larva and then, died of necrosis after D-shaped lana. And some lana developed from low lipid content egg could not develop to the spat and died after the early umbo stage. The predominant bacteria in the oyster lana collected at bad seed collection areas were Pseudomonas sp. and Pseudomonas like bacteria and the occupancy rates were $53.3\~87.1\%$.

The potential pathogenicity of Vibrio splendidus biovar II, which was isolated from triploid larvae of pacific oyster with bacillary necrosis and fish pathogenic V. anguillarum were investigated. The 5-day-old larvae infected with V. splendidus biovar II at the dose of $1.81{\times}10^{4}$ CFU/$m\ell$ started to die within 8 hours after exposure and the mortality were reached to 100% in 16 hours. However, $1.13{\times}10^{4-5}$ CFU/$m\ell$ of V. anguillarum caused 5.5-20% mortality of the larvae after 24 hours. The 10-day-old larvae infected with V. splendidus biovar II at the dose of $5.0{\times}10^{5}$ CFU/$m\ell$ showed mortality from 8 hours after challenge and led to a marked mortality of 90.47% after 24 hours. But V. anguillarum at doses of $5.08{\times}10^{3-6}$ CFU/$m\ell$ did not show mortality in the 10-day-old larvae. Therefore V. splendidus biovar II exhibited stronger virulence in 5-day-old larvae than 10-day-old and young oyster. Changes in the concentration of Vibrio in sea water showed that V. anguillarum decreased from $1.13{\times}10^{5}$ CFU/$m\ell$ to 1.7${\times}$105 CFU/$m\ell$ and V. splendidus biovar II increased from $1.81{\times}10^{4}$ CFU/$m\ell$ to $1.7{\times}10^{7}$ CFU/$m\ell$. This strong survival ability of V. splendidus biovar II in seawater was thought as one of the virulence factors against oyster larvae. The mortalities of 5-day-old and 10-day-old oyster larvae were decreased by addition of 30 $\mu{g}/m\ell$ of antibacterial agent(oxytetracycline or streptomycin). These results suggest that bacillary necrosis by V. splendidus biovar II can be occurred in oyster larvae in Korea. And virulence of V. splendidus biovar II is stronger than that of V. anguillarum in oyster larvae causing significant mortality at the density of $10^{4}$ CFU/$m\ell$.
An ovarian parasite, Marteilioides chungmuensis of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas has been observed on several occasions in the Pacific sector of production of this oyster species(Matsuzato et al., 1977 ; Chun, 1979). This study was carried out on the specimens collected at Hwado, Och'$\check{o}$n, and Sinchang respectively located the southern, western, and eastern coasts of Korean Peninsula from 1986 through 1988 to investigate M. chungmuensis to the Pacific oyster. Uitrastructural studies were also carried out on infected oysters, to allow detailed examination of the structure and consepuently the systematic position of this parasite. Infection rates of M. chungmuensis at Hwado and Och'$\check{o}$n oyster farms were 5.3% and 4.2% each in 1986, 6.7% and 2.8% each in 1987, but they were not found at Sinchang oyster habitat. M,. chungmuensis-infected oysters were found from June to November at Hwado and from June to October at Och'$\check{o}$n. Twenty five of three hundred oysters transplanted from Sinchang to Hwado were found infected with M. chungmuensis. Some abnormal eggs infected with M. chungmuensis are liberated through the gill together with normal mature eggs on the spawning and the rest remain necrotized after spawning season. The earliest known stages consist of a stem cell or primary cell, including a secondary cell in which ovoid haplosporosomes are found. During sporulation, 2 or 3 secondary are produced by exogenous budding from the first secondary cell and, each secondary cell evolves into a sporont upon the tertiary cell differentiation (enodogenous budding) ; then, haplosporosomes are formed in the young sporont. Internal cleavages involve the differentiation of one tricellular spore per sporont. The outermost spore cell contains membrane-bounded osmiophilic bodies : the middle and the inner, most spore cells contain high density cytoplasmic ribosomes. The mechanism of spore formation from the stem cell of M. chungmuensis is the simplest of the class Paramyxea known up to now.
