  • In the high speed rail system, the distortion of the voltage and the current waveform of the input power line increases the power loss and make a several electro-magnetic problems such as EMI or the interference of the communication line. In this paper, the control scheme of the PWM converter to make a good power factor and to regulated the output voltage as well as to reduce the harmonic component of the input current is proposed. Also a control schem of the PWM converter in the parallel operation to reduce the harmonics of the input current is proposed

  • This paper compares and shows the characteristics of various PWM strategies used to generate pulse signals of voltage source inverter. We designed the inverter using PTR and constituted the variable speed drive (VSD) system. For each PWM strategy, acoustic noise level, line-to-line voltage and current waveform, and current harmonic spectrum are measured with respect to the VSD of induction motor. The Suboptimal PWM strategy showed the similar harmonic effects to those of the Optimal PWM strategy. In addition, the microprocessor application was available to the former. The TP PWM strategy was excellent in that it could reduce the CPU load and increase the output voltage since the strategy could control only two phase of the three.

  • DC/DC switching power converters produce DC output voltages from different DC input sources. The converters can be used in regenerative braking of DC motors to return energy back in the supply, resulting in energy savings for the systems containing frequent stops. The current mode DC/DC converter is composed of a PWM (pulse width modulation) controller, a MOSFET, and inductor, etc. Pulse width modulation is applied to control and regulate the total output voltage. It is shown that the variation of threshold voltage at MOSFET and the offset voltage increase caused by radiation effects make the PWM pulse unstable. In the PWM operation, the missing pulses, the changes in pulse width, and a change in the period of the output waveform are studied by simulation program with integrated circuit emphasis (SPICE) and experiments.

  • A matrix converter is used for converting AC/AC power directly. In order to generate sinusoidal input/output waveform in matrix converter, it uses nine bidirectional switches and PWM modulation. This paper presents an analytical averaged loss model of matrix converter with DDPWM(direct duty ratio PWM) and proposes a new switching method for reducing switching losses. A Mathematical loss models with average magnitude of voltage/current are classed as conduction and switching loss. The proposed switching pattern is improved with existing DDPWM. To prove improved efficiency with proposed DDPWM, this paper compares losses between suggested switching pattern and conventional switching pattern using mathematical and simulation method. Each loss types are influenced by environmental factors such as temperature, switching frequency, output current and modulation method.

  • The characteristics of the current waveforms and 3$\Phi$ power waveforms of the variable speed 3$\Phi$ AC motor system driven by the single-pulse PWM investigated in this paper. The system is composed of a digital bridge inverter and low pass LC filter. It is confirmed that current waveforms and 3$\Phi$ power waveforms can be improved by utilizing the high order low pass LC filter than that of lower order through computer simulation. Also, we propose the low pass LC filter revised from the conventional LC filter.

  • Programmed PWM(Pulse Width Modulated) generation techniques eliminating several low order harmonics have been widely used in the inverter circuit which produces minimum current ripple, reduced torque pulsation and thereby improves overall system performance. However, the applications of the programmed PWM technique are limited to CVCF(Constant Voltage Constant Frequency) applications and various motor drives. Although the programmed PWM produces a lower harmonic distorted waveform than the carrier modulated PWM, real-time programming is not possible because of the complicated calculation required for the gating signal. In this paper, a new programmed PWM technique named TAM (time averaging model) is developed to compensate for the demerits of the conventional programmed PWM technique with moderate harmonic distortion. Computer simulations are performed to verify the performance of the proposed algorithm.

  • In this paper, a robust controller for PWM converter is proposed. The proposde converter controller consists of a PI controller for DC output voltage and a current controller using error-space approach for maintaining the sinusoidal current waveform and unity power factor. Conventionally, the try and error method has been used to design the current controller considering the switching frequency of the devices and sampling frequency of the digital controller. But this proposed method is based on characteristic ratio assignment(CRA) method which has the advantage to design the optimal gain to meet the referenced response and overshoot within the limit range. First, the CRA based current controller algorithm is explained. Then the validity of proposed controller is verified through the PSiM simulation and experience results.

Analysis on Core Loss of Brushless DC Motor Considering Pulse Width Modulation of Inverter

  • In this paper, characteristics of blushless direct current (BLDC) motor including core loss are analyzed considering pulse width modulation (PWM) of inverter. Input voltage of BLDC motor due to PWM is calculated considering duty ratio and carrier frequency of inverter in order to control torque or speed of BLDC motor. For the calculation of core loss, the input current with harmonics due to PWM voltage is calculated by using equivalent circuit model of BLDC motor according to switching pattern and carrier frequency. Next, core loss is analyzed by inputting the currents as a source of BLDC motor for FEM. Characteristics including core loss are compared with ones without PWM waveform according to reference speed.

  • In most railway vehicle applications, a single phase AC/DC converter is used greatly and is essential equipment for Korea High Speed Train. A diode bridge rectifier and a phase-controlled thyristor bridge rectifier generate harmonics in power system. Nowadays, power factor and harmonics become major issue in electrical equipment for railway vehicle. Many researchers have been trying to improve the power factor and ac-side harmonics. Therefore the PWM converter is used to operate at unity Power factor and to reduce ac-side current harmonics. This paper describes the circuit for AC/DC PWM converter of Korea High Speed Train and proposes control algorithm to realize the sinusolidal input current waveform and the effective unity power factor. The validity of the proposed control method is verified through the experimental result.

  • This paper proposes a four times DC-link voltage PWM power converter, which is constructed by four cascade connected power switching devices. such as IGBT. These four switching devices are controlled by a sinusoidal PWM method to obtain a DC-link voltage. which is higher than 4 times the peak supply voltage, and to suppress input current harmonic components. achieving a sinusoidal current waveform with less than $3[\%]$ distortion. Which is also constructed by four cascade connected IGBT. by the simulation result.
