  • Objective : Somatosensory evoked potential(SSEP) has been known to be a good method for evaluating brain stem function, but it is not sufficient to check the fine changes of cortical functions. A fine change of cortical function can be expressed with somatosensory evoked cortical field potential(SSEFP) rather than general SSEP. To confirm the usefulness of SSEFP for evaluating the cortical function, the authors simultaneously measured SSEFP and the intracranial pressure-volume index(PVI) in kaolin-induced hydrocephalic rats. Method : Hydrocephalus was induced with injection of 0.1ml kaolin-suspended solution into the cisterna magna in 60 Sprague-Dawley rats. The authors measured PVI and SSEFP 1 week after injection of kaolin-suspended solution. To evaluate the severity of induced hydrocephalus, we measured the transverse diameter of the lateral ventricle on the coronal slice of the rat brain 0.40mm posterior to the bregma. Result : The typical wave form of SSEFP in control rats showed a negative-positive complex wave at early latency. In SSEFP of normal rats, N0 is 10.0 msec, N1 15.3 msec, P1 31.2 msec and N1-P1 amplitude $15.4{\mu}V$. As hydrocephalus progressed, the peak latency of N1 and P1 were delayed. In mild hydrocephalus, negative peak waves were split. The N1-P1 amplitude was decreased only in severe hydrocephalus. The changes of the characteristics of SSEFP according to the severity of hydrocephalus were well correlated with the changes of PVI. Shunting normalized the characteristics of SSEFP in relation to ventricular sizes and PVI in hydrocephalic rats. Conclusion : SSEFP may be useful for evaluating the impairment of cortical function in hydrocephalus.

  • Groundwater recharge rates vary widely by location and with time. They are difficult to measure directly and are thus often estimated using simulations. This study employed frequency and regression analysis and a classification and regression tree (CART) algorithm in a machine learning method to estimate groundwater recharge. CART algorithms are considered for the distribution of precipitation by subbasin (PCP), geomorphological data, indices of the relationship between vegetation and landuse, and soil type. The considered geomorphological data were digital elevaion model (DEM), surface slope (SLOP), surface aspect (ASPT), and indices were the perpendicular vegetation index (PVI), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), normalized difference tillage index (NDTI), normalized difference residue index (NDRI). The spatio-temperal distribution of groundwater recharge in the SWAT-MOD-FLOW program, was classified as group 4, run in R, sampled for random and a model trained its groundwater recharge was predicted by CART condidering modified PVI, NDVI, NDTI, NDRI, PCP, and geomorphological data. To assess inter-rater reliability for group 4 groundwater recharge, the Kappa coefficient and overall accuracy and confusion matrix using K-fold cross-validation were calculated. The model obtained a Kappa coefficient of 0.3-0.6 and an overall accuracy of 0.5-0.7, indicating that the proposed model for estimating groundwater recharge with respect to soil type and vegetation cover is quite reliable.

  • High potential and fast electron transfer of a cathode mediator are significant factors for improving the performance of biofuel cells. This paper reports the first synthesis of a cathode redox polymer that is a coordination complex of poly (acrylic acid-vinylpyridine-acryl amide) (PAA-PVP-PAA) and [Os(4,4'-dicarboxylic acid-2,2'-bipyridine)$_2Cl_2]^{/+}$ ($E^{\circ}=0.48V$ versus Ag/AgCl). Bilirubin oxidase can be easily incorporated into this polymer matrix, which carried out the four-electron oxygen under typical physiological conditions (pH 7.2, 0.14 M NaCl, and $37^{\circ}C$). This new polymer showed an approximately 0.1 V higher redox potential than existing cathode mediators such as PAA-PVI-$[Os(dCl-bpy)_2Cl]^{+/2+}$. In addition, we suggest increasing the polymer solubility with two hydrophilic groups present in the polymer skeleton to further improve fast electron transfer within the active sites of the enzyme. The maximum power density achieved was 60% higher than that of PAA-PVI-$[Os(dCl-bpy)_2Cl]^{+/2+}$. Furthermore, high current density and electrode stability were confirmed for this osmium polymer, which makes it a promising candidate for high-efficiency biofuel cells.

  • Purpose: This study was performed to identify the affecting factors on hospital nurses' practice of disinfection focused on alcohol, chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG), and povidone iodine (PVI). Methods: The participants in this study were 196 nurses of 3 general hospitals and 2 upgrade general hospitals in 5 cities in Korea. Data were collected through self-reported questionnaires in January, 2011. The collected data were analysed by ANOVA, Pearson correlation and stepwise multiple regression using SPSS/WIN 18.0. Results: The subjects used alcohol and PVI daily for intravenous site care and surgical wound dressing respectively. The mean percentage of awareness in practicing main disinfectants were 80.0% and 72.5% respectively. The awareness and practice were highest in alcohol, but lowest in CHG. The mean percentage of practice of disinfectants was 72.5%. There was positive correlation among awareness and practice of main disinfectants. The awareness and nurses' salary explained 34.6% of variance in practice of disinfectants. Conclusion: An educational program focusing on strategy to enhance hospital nurses' awareness would be effective in improving their practice of disinfectants.

  • There is various problem in grasping change of vegetation by NDVI, PVI, etc. It is very difficult especially to remove various noise ingredients in the received satellite data. Until now, it is difficult to compensate for shadow effect when NDVI is used in vegetation analysis. The essence of this study is to describe data simulation and then applied the result to the NOAA AVHRR data. When a pixel contains shadow more than 60% then this pixe1 is extracted for shadow effects on NDVI.

  • Background: Cardiac computed tomography (CT) has emerged as an alternative to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for ventricular volumetry. However, the clinical use of cardiac CT requires external validation. Methods: Both cardiac CT and MRI were performed prior to pulmonary valve implantation (PVI) in 11 patients (median age, 19 years) who had undergone total correction of tetralogy of Fallot during infancy. The simplified contouring method (MRI) and semiautomatic 3-dimensional region-growing method (CT) were used to measure ventricular volumes. Results: All volumetric indices measured by CT and MRI generally correlated well with each other, except for the left ventricular end-systolic volume index (LV-ESVI), which showed the following correlations with the other indices: the right ventricular end-diastolic volume index (RV-EDVI) (r=0.88, p<0.001), the right ventricular end-systolic volume index (RV-ESVI) (r=0.84, p=0.001), the left ventricular end-diastolic volume index (LV-EDVI) (r=0.90, p=0.001), and the LV-ESVI (r=0.55, p=0.079). While the EDVIs measured by CT were significantly larger than those measured by MRI (median RV-EDVI: $197mL/m^2$ vs. $175mL/m^2$, p=0.008; median LV-EDVI: $94mL/m^2$ vs. $92mL/m^2$, p=0.026), no significant differences were found for the RV-ESVI or LV-ESVI. Conclusion: The EDVIs measured by cardiac CT were greater than those measured by MRI, whereas the ESVIs measured by CT and MRI were comparable. The volumetric characteristics of these 2 diagnostic modalities should be taken into account when indications for late PVI after tetralogy of Fallot repair are assessed.

  • Vegetation shows unique spectrum characteristics compared with other materials. If such characteristics are used, land change pattern can be determined. Thus, vegetation has an absorption belt and a reflective belt in visible and near infrared, and reflectance is very high. Then, various methods of monitoring vegetation paying attention to the absorption wavelength region and reflective region of vegetation are proposed. However, there are various problems in grasping change of vegetation by NDVI, PVI, etc. It is very difficult especially to remove various noise ingredients in the received satellite data. Until now, it is difficult to compensate for shadow effect when NDVI is used in vegetation analysis. The results is, if the shadow is about 60% the pixel will be wrongly classified as may be vegetation or not.

  • The coefficients of variation obtained from three typical vegetation indices of eight levels of multi-spatial resolution images in urban areas were employed to identify the optimum spatial resolution in terms of maintaining information quality. These multi-spatial resolution images were prepared by degrading 1 meter simulated, 16 meter ADEOS/AVNIR, and 30 meter Landsat-TM images. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Perpendicular Vegetation Index (PVI) and Soil Adjusted Ratio Vegetation Index (SARVI) were applied to reduce data redundancy and compare the characteristics of multi-spatial resolution image of vegetation indices. The threshold point on the curve of the coefficient of variation was defined as the optimum resolution level for the analysis with multi-spatial resolution image sets. Also, the results from the image segmentation approach of region growing to extract man-made features were compared with these multi-spatial resolution image sets.

  • This study investigates whether rhythm metrics can be used to capture the rhythmic differences between spontaneous and read English speech. Transcription of spontaneous speech tokens extracted from a corpus is read by three English native speakers to generate the corresponding read speech tokens. Two data sets are compared in terms of seven rhythm measures that are suggested by previous studies. Results show that there is a significant difference in the values of vowel-based metrics (VarcoV and nPVI-V) between spontaneous and read speech. This manifests a greater variability in vocalic intervals in spontaneous speech than in read speech. The current study is especially meaningful as it demonstrates a way in which speech styles can be differentiated and parameterized in numerical terms.
