Flexible audible display(VizDio$^{TM}$) using polymer dispersed liquid crystal on film speaker

  • To realize the flexible audible display (FAD), polymer dispersed liquid crystal(PDLC) is deposited on PVDF(Poly-vinylidene fluoride) film with piezoelectric property. With applied audio signal, it makes sound more than 70 dB in 700 Hz-10kHz. In case of transparency it is opaque and transmittance is less than 10% at 550nm wavelength without bias voltage. It is turned to be transparent and show transmittance of 66% with driving voltage of 60V.

  • A polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-based film speaker is successfully fabricated with enhanced bass sound by incorporating buckled nanospring carbon nanotubes (NS-CNTs) as fillers. Various concentrations up to 1-7 wt% of uniformly dispersed buckled NS-CNTs are loaded to increase the beta (β)-phase fraction, crystallinity, and dielectric constant of the speaker, and this results in the bass part enhancement of about 19 dB full scale (dBFS) at 7 wt% filler loading of the piezoelectric film speaker.

  • An important signal processing problem in PVDF sensor is the restoration of surface information from electric sensing signals. The objectives of this research are to design a new texture sensing system and to develop a new signal processing algorithm for signals from the sensor to be tangibly displayed by tangible interface systems. The texture sensing system is designed to get surface information with high resolution and dynamic range. First, a PVDF sensor is made of piezoelectric polymer (polyvinylidene fluoride) strips molded in a silicon rubber and attached in a rigid cylinder body. The sensor is mounted to a scanning system for dynamic sensing. Secondly, a new signal processing algorithm is developed to restore surface information. The algorithm consists of the two-dimensional modeling of the sensor using an identification method and inverse filtering from sensing signals into estimated surface information. Finally the two-dimensional surface information can be experimentally reconstructed from sensing signals using the developed signal processing algorithm.

  • In this paper, we present the finger tip tactile sensor which can detect contact normal force as well as slip. The developed sensor is made of two different materials, such as polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF) that is known as piezoelectric polymer and pressure variable resistor ink. In order to detect slip to surface of object, a PVDF strip is arranged along the normal direction in the robot finger tip and the thumb tip. The surface electrode of the PVDF strip is fabricated using silk-screening technique with silver paste. Also a thin flexible force sensor is fabricated in the form of a matrix using pressure variable resistor ink in order to sense the static force. The developed tactile sensor is physically flexible and it can be deformed three-dimensionally to any shape so that it can be placed on anywhere on the curved surface. In addition, we developed a tactile sensing system by miniaturizing the charge amplifier, in order to amplify the small signal from the sensor, and the fast signal processing unit. The sensor system is evaluated experimentally and its effectiveness is validated.

  • This paper presents a study of low frequencies volume velocity vibration control of a smart panel in order to reduce sound transmission. A distributed piezoelectric quadratically shaped polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) polymer film is used as a uniform force actuator and an array of $4\;{\times}\;4$ accelerometer is used as a volume velocity sensor for the implementation of a single-input single-output control system. The theoretical and experimental study of sensor-.actuator frequency response function shows that this sensor-actuator arrangement provides a required strictly positive real frequency response function below about 900 Hz. Direct velocity feedback could therefore be implemented with a limited gain which gives reductions of about 15 dB in vibration level and about 8 dB in acoustic power level at the (1,1) mode of the smart panel. It has been also shown that the shaping error of PVDF actuator could limit the stability and performance of the control system.

  • A smart panel with structural sensors and actuators for minimizing noise radiation or transmission is described in the paper with the concept of active structural acoustical control. The sensors and actuators are both quadratically shaped piezoelectric polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF) Polymer films to implement a volume velocity sensor and uniform force actuator respectively. They are collocated on either side of the panel to take advantage of direct velocity feedback(DVFB) strategy, which can guarantee a robust stability and high performance as long as the sensor-actuator response is strictly positive real(SPR). However, the measured sensor-actuator response of the panel showed unexpected result with non-SPR property. In the paper, the reason of the non-SPR property is investigated by theoretical analysis, computer simulation and experimental verification. The investigation reveals that the arrangement of collocated piezoelectric PVDF sensor and actuator pair on a panel is not relevant to get a high feedback gain and good performance with DVFB strategy.

  • In this paper, we present an arrayed flexible tactile sensor, which can detect contact normal forces as well as positions. The tactile sensor is developed using Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) that is known as piezoelectric polymer, and the surface electrode is fabricated using silk-screening technique with silver. We develop a charge amplifier in order to amplify the small signal from the sensor, and a fast signal processing unit by using a DSP chip. The developed tactile sensor is physically flexible and it can be deformed three-dimensionally to any shape so that it can be placed on anywhere on the curved surface.   • 압전폴리머 PVDF(polyvinylidene difluoride)의 기판소재를 기반으로 한 디스플레이 소자를 연구하였다. 압전 폴리머 PVDF의 양면은 두께 300nm정도의 ITO(Indium Tin Oxide)를 TCO(Transparent conducting oxide)로 R2R(roll to roll)증착하였으며, 이를 적외선 계열 Pulsed Laser로 상온 건식 에칭을 통해 패턴해내고, 이후 고진공 환경에서 Alq3 를 기반의 유기발광소자를 제작하였다. 전기적 신호에 대해서 기계적인 작동이 가능한 투명 압전 폴리머 재료를 디스플레이 발광소자의 기판 소재로 사용함으로써, 궁극적으로 발광기능과 더불어 압전효과에 의한 스피커 기능이 한 개의 개체내에서 독립적으로 구현될 수 있도록 설계하고, 기술적으로 실현시켰다는 점이 본 연구의 의의라고 할 수 있다. 이를 위해서, 섭씨 80도 이상의 온도에서 압전 성질을 상실하는 것으로 알려진 PVDF에 대해서 투명산화전극을 레이져를 이용한 비가열식 승화방법을 통해 패턴화하는 것을 사용했으며, 밀리미터 단위에서 수십 마이크로미터 수준까지 패턴화할 수 있었다. 제작된 복합형 유연 OLED소자는 기계적으로 휘어진 상태에서도 발광 성능과 스피커 성능을 각각 독립적으로 보였으며, Alq3에 의한 녹색발광을 보임을 확인하였고, 이 경우 양자효율은 약 3%이하의 값을 보였다. 또한 각주파수별 음압(SPL: Sound Pressure Level)측정 결과는 압번폴리머가 가청주파수 영역에서 작동함을 보였으며, 고주파영역에서의 SPL값이 증가하는 전형적인 PVDF사용 필름 스피커의 특성을 보였다. 이로부터 제작된 복합형 소자는 본 연구에서 제안된 목적에서 보인 것과 같이, 두 개의 기능이 서로간의 간섭없이 독립적으로 한 개의 개체 내에서 작동함을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구 결과로부터 새로운 유연 전자 소자에 대한 디자인 개념을 제시하고, 기타 다른 기능이 접합된 형태의 신개념 전자 소자를 제안하는 것도 가능할 것으로 기대된다.

Flexible tactile sensor array for foot pressure mapping system in a biped robot

  • Controlling the balance of motion in a context involving a biped robot navigating a rugged surface or a step is a difficult task. In the present study, a $3{\times}5$ flexible piezoelectric tactile sensor array is developed to provide a foot pressure map and zero moment point for a biped robot. We introduce an innovative concept involving structural electrodes on a piezoelectric film in order to improve the sensitivity. The tactile sensor consists of a polymer piezoelectric film, PVDF, between two patterned flexible print circuit substrates (FPC). Additionally, a silicon rubber bump-like structure is attached to the FPC and covered by a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layer. Experimental results show that the output signal of the sensor exhibits a linear behavior within 0.2 N ~ 9 N, while its sensitivity is approximately 42 mV/N. According to the characteristic of the tactile sensor, the readout module is designed for an in-situ display of the pressure magnitudes and distribution within $3{\times}5$ taxels. Furthermore, the trajectory of the zero moment point (ZMP) can also be calculated by this program. Consequently, our tactile sensor module can provide the pressure map and ZMP information to the in-situ feedback to control the balance of moment for a biped robot.
