  • In this study, the applicability of PVDF films for measurements of dynamic strain in a structure was investigated. A relationship between the strain and the voltage response of a PVDF film was analytically derived. Free vibration test on a steel cantilever beam was performed and vibration response of the beam was measured both by a convential foil strain gauge and a PVDF film. Strain-voltage relationship obtained from the experiment was compared with the analytic relationship. Good agreement between the analytic and experimental relationships was observed. It was found that a tailored PVDF film can measure the dynamic strain of a structure as accurate as a conventional foil strain gauge.

  • Polyvinylidenefluoride (PVDF) is most used in piezoelectric polymer industry. Electrode effect on the electrical properties of PVDF has been investigated. al has been used due to fair adhesion for PVDF. Work function of metal plays an important role on the electrical properties of ferroelectrics for top and /or bottom electrode. However, Al has much lower work function than Pt or Au and so leakage current of Al/PVDF/Al may be large. Pt or Au has not been used for electrode of PVDF system due to poor adhesion. PVDF irradiated by Ar+ ion beam with O2 environment takes good adhesion to inert metal. Contact angle of PVDF to triple distilled water was reduced from 75$^{\circ}$ to 31$^{\circ}$ at 1$\times$1015 Ar+/cm2. Working pressure was 2.3$\times$10-4 Torr and base pressure was 5$\times$10-6 Torr. Pt was deposited by ion beam sputtering and thickness of pt film was about 1000$\AA$. in previous study, enhancing adhesion of Pt on PVDF was shown. in this study, effect of electrode on PVDF will be represented.

  • In this paper, the dielectric properties of fabricated Polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF, $PVF_2$) thin film with substrate temperature from 30 to at vapor deposition. The dielectric properties of PVDF thin film had been studied in the frequency range from 10Hz to 4MHz at measuring temperature between 20 and $100^{/circ}C$. The anomalous increasing in dielectric constant and dielectric loss at low frequencies and high temperature was described for PVDF thin film containing ion impurities. In particularly, ion mobility of fabricated PVDF thin film at substrate temperature at $30^{/circ}C$ decrease from $2\times10^{-5}\;to\;3.07$\times10^{-7}cm^2/V.s$ On the other hand, ion density increase abruptly from 1.49\times$$10^{13}$ to $1.5\times$10^{16}$cm^{-3}$ In spite of decreasing of ion mobility, dielectric constants and dielectric loss for PVDF thin film increase rapidly with decreasing frequency and high temperature. It was concluded that the dielectric constants and dielectric loss was related to ion density than to ion mobility at low frequency and high temperatures.

  • In this paper, we propose a enhanced anti-corrosion property of the ground system by coating the CNT/PVDF composite film on it. Polymer material used for preventing the corrosion of ground system is polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), and conducting filler for obtaining conductivity of the composite film is multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The MWCNTs were dispersed in the organic solvent of methyl ethyl ketone 2-butanone (MEK) with different concentration ratios, and the PVDF was solved in the MEK solvent with constant concentration ratio of 1 wt%. The CNT/PVDF composite solution was perpared by mixing and re-dispersing the CNT solution and the PVDF solution. Finally, the CNT/PVDF composite films were fabricated by the spray coating method using the above composite solution. Electrical conductivity, surface states, and anti-corrosion property of the CNT/PVDF composite films coated on the Cu substrate were evaluated. We found that the CNT/PVDF composite film showed relatively low resistance, hydrophobic surface state, and chemical stability. Consequently, we could improve the anti-corrosion property and maintain the electrical conductivity of the ground system by coating the CNT/PVDF composite film on it.

  • This study investigated the possible use of vibration from polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF) film to enhance the performance of the deteriorated tunnel drainage due to physical/chemical clogging of the fine particles through a series of laboratory experiments. The test program was consisted of two different experiments, fundamental investigation and drainage model test. In the fundamental investigation, flow of clay slurry mixed with 50% water (freshwater and brine) on PVDF film with various frequencies was examined. In the model tests, slurry clogging to the woven fiber attached to drainage pipe and its reduction by vibration was investigated. Results of the experiment show that vibration from PVDF film enhances the drain performance significantly. Based upon the investigation, it gives an essential data that are needed for a potential use of hybrid drainage system with PVDF.

  • We prepare the PVDF thin film using vacuum deposition method with the application of voltage and obtain the optimum deposition condition for $\beta$-PVDF thin film on the basis of the results of FT-IR, crystallinity of $\beta$ phase, surface roughness studies with varying the condition. The phase of PVDF thin film is analyzed by the FT-IR spectrum. When the substrate temperature and applied voltage increase from 3$0^{\circ}C$ to 9$0^{\circ}C$ and from 0kV to 9kV, respectively, the crystallinity of $\beta$ phase is introduced as large as 64%. It means that the substrate temperature and applied voltage allow the phase transition of $\beta$ phase to occur more easily. Also, the surface roughness of PVDF thin film decreases from 65.1nm to 36.6nm with the increase of substrate temperature. In results, we obtain the optimum deposition conditions for $\beta$-PVDF thin film from these experimental results and measure the Properties of the $\beta$-PVDF film deposited in the optimum condition. The dielectric properties such as dielectric constant and loss tangent decrease from 2.34 to 0.44 and from 0.27 to 0.04 with the increase of frequency, respectively.

  • The equation of output voltage from the PVDF was derived. When impact force applied to the PVDF films of cantilever beam and one-end fixed, other-end supported beam structure, output voltage equation induced. Experimental output voltages by falling ball agreed quite well with induced theoretical data. This PVDF film showers to be in high possibility in a warning system of abnormal pulse rate and breathing, and in detecting impact force and/or mechanical energy.

  • A modal transducer in two-dimensional structure can be implemented by varying the distributed transducer's gain spatially. In this paper, a method based on finite element method is developed for optimizing spatial gain distribution of PVDF transducer to create the modal transducer for specific modes. Using this concept, one can design the modal transducer in two-dimensional structure having arbitrary geometry and boundary conditions. As a practical means for implementing this continuous gain distribution without repoling die PVDF film, the gain distribution is approximated by optimizing gain-weights of interface circuit. The whole spatial area of the PVDF film is divided into several electrode segments and the signals from each segment are properly weighted and summed by interface circuit. This corresponds to the approximation of a continuous function using discrete values. The electrode partition is optimized using the genetic algorithm. Gain-weights are optimized using the simplex search method. A modal sensor for first to fourth modes of aluminum plate is designed using PVDF film with gain-weighted interface circuit. Various lamination angles of PVDF film are taken into consideration to utilize the anisotropy of the PVDF film. Performance of the optimized' PVDF sensor is demonstrated by numerical simulations..

  • PVDF film sensor was applied to measure the stress concentration for monitoring the structural integrity. The strain calibration of this film sensor was performed by the bending test of aluminum beam. The PVDF sensor and the electrical strain gage were bonded on the beam. When the beam was loaded, the output of electrical strain gage was compared with the output of the PVDF sensor. The waveform of PVDF sensor output was shown as the same form of the output of electrical strain gage. The gain was determined as 1.7 by comparing these two signals to determine the exact value of the strain. In order to experiment the stress concentration, the stress field was analyzed by finite element analysis. The tensile test of notched steel specimens was conducted to develop the measurement technique of stress concentration. The output voltage ratio between the PVDF sensor near the notch and the PVDF sensor far from the notch could give the information about the load bearing capacity of steel specimen.
