Migration of Alkylphenols from PVC Food Packaging Materials to Food Simulants and Foods (PVC 포장재에서 식품유사용매와 식품으로 이행되는 알킬페놀)

  • The migration of alkylphenols from PVC packaging materials (wrap, sheet and gasket) into food simulants and foods were analyzed by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection and gas chromatography with mass selective detection. Only seven nonyl phenol isomers were detected in three types of PVC food packaging materials and the content of nonyl phenol of wrap was higher than those of sheet and gasket. The contents of nonyl phenol migrated from fatty food simulants (n-heptane) were higher than those from aqeous food simulants (distilled water, 4% acetic acid and 20% ethanol) and increased with increase in temperature. Nonyl phenol in fruit juice, infant formula, and beverage was migrated from PVC gasket, olefin gasket, and olefin bottle cap, respectively. Nonyl phenol was also detected from foods even before contacting with the packaging materals.

Determination of Semicarbazide in PVC Gaskets of Food Bottle Cap and Foods (식품병마개 PVC gasket과 식품에 함유된 semicarbazide의 분석)

  • Method was developed to efficiently analyze semicarbazide (SEM) in foods. Although SEM is produced by thermal decomposition of blowing agent azodicarbonamide, it is too small to be activated by ultraviolet light or fluorescence. When 2-nitrobenzaldehyde semicarbazone, derivatization of SEM, was analyzed by HPLC with triple column system, coefficient correlation over 0.9997 and detection limit of 0.48 ng/g were observed. SEM level in commercial bottle cap gasket was 812.20-5771.30ng/g. Recoveries for SEM in food and PVC gasket were 83.45-97.33% and 92.12-98.71%, respectively. SEM level in plastic seals of press twist-off metal lids was ND-5771.330ng/g.

  • The intention of this study is to investigate the properties of polymer blend, NBR/PVC vulcanizates and blending procedures such as roll-mixing temperatures and sequences for polymer blending of NBR and PVC(resin type). The results obtained are as follows: 1. The roll temperature applied for polymer blending is around $150^{\circ}C$. At this temperature region, the degradation of rubber stock, which may be caused by heat, can be minimized and mill processing in practical application in industries can also be facilitated. 2. It is obviously necessary that a small amount of plasticizers should be added to the stock for improving processibility of roll mixing and physical properties. 3. On roll-mixing sequence, it is more effective that PVC compounded with plasticizer is added to NBR milled on hot roll. 4. The vulcanizates of the blends with different degree of polymerization of PVC ale similar to one another in properties. 5. NBR/PVC(70/30) blends shows the better physical characters than eve,-made foreign latex blend except abrasion-resistance. 6. As PVC addition ratio is increased, the physical properties such as resistance to ozone, tear, heat and oil and tensile strength, modulus, hardness have also improved, on the other hand, tension set and rebound character decreased. 7. The curve of ultimate elongation have point of inflection at the ratio of $30\sim40$ part of PVC. 8. While CR is blended, the physical properties such as brittle point, rebound and resistance to oil in high temperature have improved. 9. Polymer blend of NBR and domestic PVC is applied for the industrial utility such as rubber sole and heel, electric wire cover and oil-resistant packing, coating and gasket, printing roll, film for food packing etc.

  • $CO_2$ enrichment systems have been recently used to shorten the growth period of plants and the improvement of harvest and its quality. To accomplish these goals, manifold should be designed to supply the same amount of $CO_2$. In this study, CFD approach has been used to understand the effects of geometric parameters, such as tube and hole diameters. An optimized geometry has been derived through pipe and tube part, respectively. As a result, the deviation of flow rate less than 0.1 g/s was expected at all holes of the $CO_2$ enrichment system.

  • The levels of butyltin compounds in poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) food packaging using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) were monitored. The analytical method, involving the ethylation with sodium tetraethylborate, was found to be selective and sensitive for mono-n-butyltin (MBT), di-n-butyltin (DBT), and tri-n-butyltin (TBT), validated by a $0.005\;{\mu}g/mL$ limit of detection (LOD), an $R^2>0.999$ for linearity, and >90% of recovery, respectively. Finally, none of the commercial food wraps and gaskets showed detectable levels of butyltin compounds.
