This study was conducted to find out the chlorine removal characteristics of waste plastic mixture by pyrolysis process with thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) and a lab-scale pyrolyzer. The material used as plastic wastes were PE (Poly-ethylene), PP (Poly-prophylene), and PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride). Experimental procedure were composed of three steps; 1st step: TGA of PVC, PP and PE, 2nd step: chlorine removal rate of PVC in a lab-scale pyrolyzer, 3rd step: chlorine removal rate of PVC-PE and PVC-PP mixture in a pyrolyzer. Through the results of TGA, we can estimate the basic pyrolysis characteristics of each plastic, and then we can also derive the design parameters and operating conditions of the lab-scale pyrolyzer. The results can be used as primary data for designing a system to produce RPF (Refuse Plastic Fuel), a waste incinerator and a pyrolysis/gasification process.
The current study focused on the preparation of low-cost PVC-based adsorbing membrane. Metakaolin, as available adsorbent, was embedded into the PVC matrix via solution blending method. The as-prepared PVC/metakaolin mixed matrix membranes were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), pure water permeability and contact angle measurements. The results confirmed the improvement of PWP and hydrophilicity due to the presence of metakaolin in the PVC matrix. Additionally the structure of PVC membrane was changed due to the incorporation of metakaolin in the polymer matrix. The static adsorption capacity of all samples was determined through dye removal. The effect of metakaolin dosage (0-7%) and pH (4, 8, 12) on dye adsorption capacity was investigated. The results depicted that the highest adsorption capacity was achieved at pH of 4 for all samples. Additionally, adsorption data were fitted on Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin models to determine the appropriate governing isotherm model. Finally, the dynamic adsorption capacity of the optimum PVC/metakaolin membrane was studied using dead-end filtration cell. The dye removal efficiency was determined for pure PVC and PVC/metakaolin membrane. The results demonstrated that PVC/metakaolin mixed matrix membrane had a high adsorption capacity for dye removal from aqueous solution.
The solid phase extractant (PVC-D2EHPA bead) was prepared by immobilizing di-2-ethylhexyl-phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) with polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The prepared PVC-D2EHPA beads were characterized by using fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The removal experiments of Cu(II) by PVC-D2EHPA beads conducted batchwise. The removal kinetics of Cu(II) was found to follow the pseudo-second-order model. The equilibrium data fitted well with Langmuir isotherm model and the maximum removal capacity was 2.6 mg/g at $20^{\circ}C$. The optimum pH region was in the range of 3.5 to 6. and the standard free energy (${\Delta}G^{\circ}$) was between -4.67~-4.98 kJ/mol, indicating the spontaneous nature of Cu(II) removal by PVC-D2EHPA beads.
PVC-Zeolite composite was prepared by immobilizing zeolite with polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The prepared PVC-Zeolite beads were characterized by using X-ray diffractometer (XRD), fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), thermo gravimetric analyzer (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The removal properties of Sr and Cs ions from aqueous solution were investigated in batch experiment. The removal efficiencies of Sr and Cs ions by the PVC-Zeolite beads were dependent on the initial pH of solution. The removal efficiencies sharply increased at below pH 4 and was kept constant at pH 4 or more. The adsorption kinetics of Sr and Cs ions by the PVC-Zeolite beads were fitted well by the pseudo-second-order model ($r^2$>0.99) more than pseudo-first-order model. The maximum adsorption capacities of Sr and Cs ions calculated from Langmuir isotherm model were 39.37 mg/g and 55.87 mg/g, respectively.
Removal characteristics of Cu(II) ions by solid-phase extractant immobilized D2EHPA and TBP in PVC were investigated. Cu(II) ion concentrations in the solution and removal capacity of Cu(II) ion according to operation time were compared. The lower the initial concentration of Cu(II) ion in aqueous solution was, the removal capacity of Cu(II) ion by solid-phase extractant was increased relatively. The bigger the initial concentration of Cu(II) ion was, the removal capacity of Cu(II) ion was increased relatively. The pseudo-second-order kinetics according to operation time was showed more satisfying results than the pseudo-first-order kinetics for the removal velocity of Cu(II) ion. The removal capacity of Cu(II) ion was 0.025 mg/g in aqueous solution of pH 2, but the removal capacity of Cu(II) ion was increased to 0.33 mg/g mg/g in aqueous solution of pH 4 according to increasing pH.
Study on chlorination of ilmenite ore were carried out by using PVC(polyvinyl chloride) as the chlorinating agent in a static bed reactor for selective removal of iron. The effect of amount of PVC and reaction temperature were investigated. It was found that the removal ratio of iron increased with amount of PVC and temperature. After reaction with HCl gas generated from PVC, porous surface of the specimens were observed. As a result, HCl gas could react with iron in the central portion of ilmenite particle through these pores. Examination of data using kinetic model suggest that the selective chlorination rate is controlled by chemical reaction at the interface of particles. The activation energy for the selective chlorination of ilmenite using PVC was calculated as 20.47 kJ/mol.
A particle flow visualization, electrostatic charging measurement and separation of triboelectrically charged particles in the external electric field by a fluidized bed tribocharger are conducted for the removal of PVC particles from mixed waste plastics. The laboratory-scale triboelectrostatic separation system consists of the fluidized bed tribocharger, a separation chamber, a collection chamber and a controller. PVC and PET particles can be imparted negative and positive surface charges respectively due to the difference of triboelectric charging series between particles and particles in the fluidized bed tribocharger, and can be separated by passing them through an external electric field. To visualize these charged particles, He-Ne laser is used with cylindrical lenses to generate a sheet beam. In the charging measurement, the particle motion analysis system (PMAS), capable of determining particle velocity and diameter. is used to non-intrusively measure particle behavior in high strength electric field. The average charge-to-mass ratios of PVC and PET particles are $1.4\;and\;1.2{\mu}C/kg$, respectively. The highly concentrated PVC (91.9%) can be recovered with a yield of about 96.1% from the mixture of PVC and PET materials for a single-stage processing. The triboelectrostatic separation system using the fluidized tribocharger shows the potential to be an effective method for removing PVC from mixed plastics for waste plastic recycling.
A study was conducted in order to remove Poly vinyl chloride (PVC) from granular plastic mixture by using Air Table. The motion of plastic particle on Air Table was investigated, and separation test on the plastic mixture with the mixing ratio of PVC 10% and PE 90% was conducted. At the optimum condition obtained from this study, that is frequency of 9.2Hz, air velocity of 1.05 m/sec, End-slope of $7.5 ^{\circ}$, Side-slope of $1^{\circ}$, Feeding speed of 450 g/min, etc., we could separate the PE-PVC mixture to PE (99.96% grade and 98.9% yield) and PVC (88.7% grade and 99.6% yield).
In this study, PVC-LMO beads were prepared by immobilizing lithium manganese oxide (LMO) with poly vinyl chloride (PVC) diluted in dioxane solvent. XRD and SEM analysis confirmed that LMO was immobilized well in PVC-LMO beads. The diameter of PVC-LMO beads prepared by dioxane solvent was about 2 mm. The adsorption experiments of lithium ions by PVC-LMO beads were conducted batchwise. The optimum pH was pH 10. The adsorption characteristics of lithium ions by PVC-LMO beads was well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The maximum adsorption capacity obtained from Langmuir model was 24.25 mg/g. The thermodynamic parameters such as ${\Delta}H^{\circ}$, ${\Delta}S^{\circ}$ and ${\Delta}G^{\circ}$ were evaluated. The calculated ${\Delta}G^{\circ}$ was between -6.16 and -4.14 kJ/mol (below zero), indicating the spontaneous nature of $Li^+$ adsorption on PVC-LMO beads. Also, the results showed that PVC-LMO beads prepared in this study could be used for the removal of lithium ions from seawater containing coexisting ions such as $Na^+$, $K^+$, $Mg^{2+}$ and $Ca^{2+}$.

The thermal decomposition characteristic of waste PVC wires has been studied by using TGA and fixed-bed reactor. The experimental conditions of decomposition temperatures, air flow rates and weight ratio of CaO/PVC were considered in this work. To verify the effectiveness of CaO addition to remove HCl and toxic gases generated from thermal decomposition of PVC wire, the gaseous products obtained from the thermal decomposition of PVC were analyzed by GC/MS(Gas Chromatograph and Mass Spectrometry). To investigate the effect of CaO in thermal decomposition of PVC, liquid products were also analyzed by GC/MS. And the effect of decomposition temperature, air flow rate and CaO/ PVC weight ratio on the yield of liquid, gas and residue fraction have been also studied. From this work, it was found that the removal amount of HCl generated from thermal decomposition of PVC increased with increase of CaO addition.
