  • This paper introduces improved prestressed concrete (PSC) girders for the railway bridges. In order to improve performance of conventional PSC girders, various types of PSC girders are either under development or have already been applied in railway bridges. Incrementally prestressed concrete girder is one of these newly developed girders. According to the design concept, these types of PSC girders have the advantages of requiring less self-weight while having the capability of longer spans. However, the tensional failure of top flange is one of the critical issues at the first prestressing stage. To effectively provide initial section stiffness of PSC girders, concrete block on the top flange is used in this study. The efficiency of the proposed structures, compared with conventional girders and improved ones, is successfully demonstrated in the example.

  • It is required efficient section shape like bulb-tee girders with high strength concrete to construct long span bridges economically. However, the trpical design method for PSC I-girders include bulb-tees, the concrete girder prestressed only one time at same time. But in this paper, new design method prestress increases as each load-stress stage. The incrementally prestressed concrete (IPC) girders can reduce the required area of grider section and extend span length by additional prestress. So it is able to construct long span bridges economically by using IPC girders.

  • The long span PSC deck of composite girder bridge should be needed in order to improve the endurance and to simplify the structure of the steel bridge. However, there have been few domestic research activities about long-span PSC decks for the steel bridges with a small number of girders. In this study, a literature survey is performed to develop a new deck system for the steel bridge with a small number of girders. By considering the characteristics of a small number of girders bridge system, a cast-in-place long span PSC deck is proposed for a small number of girders bridges. To examine structural behavior and safety of the proposed PSC deck, the real scale partial models of the deck(12m$\times$3.2m) are tested under the static loading. In the test, the failure mode and behavior of each specimen, and ultimate load carrying capacity of the proposed PSC deck are identified.

  • Prestressed concrete I-girders were used in the bridge applications in the early 1950s. During the last four decades, the most widely used girder length of bridges have been below 30 meters. The main objective of this study is to develope the alternative section for widely spaced girder of 30 meters span bridge. Girder spacing, the number of strands and compressive strength of concrete are major parameters for widely spaced girders. The optimal girder spacing is determined through the parameter studies of design using widely spaced girders. 30m span bridges of widely girder spacing must use high-strength concrete. Although the basic unit cost of concrete is higher for high-strength concrete, it may be partially or even fully offset by reduced quantities of concrete as result of the smaller number of girders used. High-strength concrete girders have more prestressing strands per girder, but the total number of strands for all of the girders is less than that required for the larger number of normal-strength concrete girders. It could design PSC-I Birdge with widely spaced girder owing to high-strength concrete.

  • In this study, a method to compensate the effect of temperature variation on impedance responses which are used for prestress-loss monitoring in prestressed concrete (PSC) girders is presented. Firstly, an impedance-based technique using a mountable lead-zirconate-titanate (PZT) interface is presented for prestress-loss monitoring in the local tendon-anchorage member. Secondly, a cross-correlation-based algorithm to compensate the effect of temperature variation in the impedance signatures is outlined. Thirdly, lab-scale experiments are performed on a PSC girder instrumented with a mountable PZT interface at the tendon-anchorage. A series of temperature variation and prestress-loss events are simulated for the lab-scale PSC girder. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed method is experimentally verified for prestress-loss monitoring in the PSC girder under temperature-varying conditions and prestress-loss events.

  • This paper presents 3D nonlinear analysis considering the slip of composite section as well as the static load tests of PSC-Steel hybrid girders. According to the slip modulus, the nonlinear analysis shows that the behavior of hybrid girders could be divided into three parts as full-composite, partial-composite and non-composite. However, the experimental results show that the PSC-Steel hybrid girders with shear connectors take the part of partial composite action in ultimate load stage. In addition, the load test results give that stud shear connectors and welded reinforcements have contributed to improve the ultimate strength of hybrid girders for about $20\%$.

  • In this study, hybrid smart sensor nodes were developed for the autonomous structural health monitoring of prestressed concrete (PSC) girders. In order to achieve the objective, the following approaches were implemented. First, we show how two types of smart sensor nodes for the hybrid health monitoring were developed. One was an acceleration-based smart sensor node using an MEMS accelerometer to monitor the overall damage in concrete girders. The other was an impedance-based smart sensor node for monitoring the local damage in prestressing tendons. Second, a hybrid monitoring algorithm using these smart sensor nodes is proposed for the autonomous structural health monitoring of PSC girders. Finally, we show how the performance of the developed system was evaluated using a lab-scaled PSC girder model for which dynamic tests were performed on a series of prestress-loss cases and girder damage cases.

  • As an alternative of conventional prestressed concrete (PSC) girders, various types of PSC girders are being developed and applied in bridge structures. Incrementally prestressed concrete girder is one of these newly developed girders. According to design concept, these new types of PSC girders have considerable advantages to reduce their self-weight and make spans longer. However, dynamic interaction between bridge superstructures and passing trains would be sometimes one of critical issues in these more flexible railway bridges. Therefore, it is very important to evaluate modal parameters of newly designed bridges before conducting dynamic analyses. In the present paper, a 25 meters long full scale PSC girder was fabricated as a test specimen and modal testing was carried out to evaluate modal parameters including natural frequencies and modal damping ratios at every prestressing stage. In the modal testing, a digitally controlled vibration exciter as well as an impact hammer is applied to obtain frequency response functions more exactly and the modal parameters are evaluated varying with construction stages. Prestressed force effects on changes of modal parameters are analyzed at every incremental prestressing stage.
