  • k-nearest neighbor (K-NN) is a well-known classification algorithm, being feature space-based on nearest-neighbor training examples in machine learning. However, K-NN, as we know, is a lazy learning method. Therefore, if a K-NN-based system very much depends on a huge amount of history data to achieve an accurate prediction result for a particular task, it gradually faces a processing-time performance-degradation problem. We have noticed that many researchers usually contemplate only classification accuracy. But estimation speed also plays an essential role in real-time prediction systems. To compensate for this weakness, this paper proposes correlation coefficient-based clustering (CCC) aimed at upgrading the performance of K-NN by leveraging processing-time speed and plurality rule-based density (PRD) to improve estimation accuracy. For experiments, we used real datasets (on breast cancer, breast tissue, heart, and the iris) from the University of California, Irvine (UCI) machine learning repository. Moreover, real traffic data collected from Ojana Junction, Route 58, Okinawa, Japan, was also utilized to lay bare the efficiency of this method. By using these datasets, we proved better processing-time performance with the new approach by comparing it with classical K-NN. Besides, via experiments on real-world datasets, we compared the prediction accuracy of our approach with density peaks clustering based on K-NN and principal component analysis (DPC-KNN-PCA).

  • Discrete wavelet transforms are extensively preferred in biomedical signal processing for denoising, feature extraction, and compression. This paper presents a new denoising method based on the modeling of discrete wavelet coefficients of ECG in selected sub-bands with Kernel density estimation. The modeling provides a statistical distribution of information and noise. A Gaussian kernel with bounded support is used for modeling sub-band coefficients and thresholds and is estimated by placing a sliding window on a normalized cumulative density function. We evaluated this approach on offline noisy ECG records from the Cardiovascular Research Centre of the University of Glasgow and on records from the MIT-BIH Arrythmia database. Results show that our proposed technique has a more reliable physical basis and provides improvement in the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) and Percentage RMS Difference (PRD). The morphological information of ECG signals is found to be unaffected after employing denoising. This is quantified by calculating the mean square error between the feature vectors of original and denoised signal. MSE values are less than 0.05 for most of the cases.

  • "Law on price announcement for real estate" which was revised as of Jan. 19, 2016 (will be enforced as of Sep. 1, 2016) decided the introduction of 'Price announcement system for non-residential property' for the first time. However, its introduction seems to be delayed based on two reasons. Firstly the methodology for introduction of non-property system is not definitized, despite many problems were brought up for current tax base of non-residential property. In addition, changes in tax base will place a burden on the government. In this regard, this study analyzed actual transaction price data throughout one year to analyze equity of taxation for non-residential property and to find major factor which affects on the tax base, in relation with the change of current public announcement system to actual transaction based system. And this is the first study that applied actual transaction price to non-residential property.

  • In view of personal health and disease management based on cost effective healthcare services, there is a growing need for real-time monitoring services. The electrocardiogram (ECG) signal is one of the most important of health information and real-time monitoring of the ECG can provide an efficient way to cope with emergency situations, as well as assist in everyday health care. In this system, it is essential to continuously collect and transmit large amount of ECG data within a given time and provide maximum user convenience at the same time. When considering limited wireless capacity and unstable channel conditions, appropriate signal processing and transmission techniques such as compression are required. However, ISO/IEEE 11073 standards for interoperability between personal health devices cannot properly support compressed data transmission. Therefore, in the present study, the problems for handling compressed data are specified and new extended agent and manager are proposed to address the problems while maintaining compatibility with existing devices. Extended devices have two PM-stores enabling compression and a novel transmission scheme. A variety of compression techniques can be applied; in this paper, discrete cosine transformation (DCT) is used. And the priority of information after DCT compression enables new transmission techniques for performance improvement. The performance of the compressed signal and the original uncompressed signal transmitted over the noisy channel are compared in terms of percent root mean square difference (PRD) using our simulation results. Our transmission scheme shows a better performance and complies with 11073 standards.

  • Top-down construction is a construction technique in which pit excavation and structure construction are conducted simultaneously. Reducing construction time and minimizing noise and vibration which affect neighboring structures, the technique is widely employed in constructing downtown structures. While H-steel columns have been commonly used as core columns, concrete filled steel tube (CFT) columns are at the center of attention because the latter have less axial directionality and greater cross-sectional efficiency than the former. When compared with circular CFT columns, square CFT columns are more easily connected to the floor structure and the area of percussion rotary drilling (PRD) is smaller. For this reason, square CFT columns are used as core columns of concrete encased and filled square (CET) columns in underground floors. However, studies on the structural behavior and concrete stress transfer of CET columns have not been conducted. Since concrete is cast according to construction sequence, checking the stress of concrete inside the core columns and the stress of covering concrete is essential. This paper presents the results of structural tests and analyses conducted to evaluate the usability and safety of CET columns in top-down construction where CFT columns are used as core columns. Parameters in the tests are loading condition, concrete strength and covering depth. The compressive load capacity and failure behavior of specimens are evaluated. In addition, 2 cases of field application of CET columns in underground floors are analyzed.

  • Our body's immune system has defense mechanisms against pathogens such as viruses and bacteria. Immune responses are primarily initiated by the activation of toll-like receptors (TLRs). In particular, TLR4 is well-characterized and is known to be activated by gram-negative bacteria and tissue damage signals. TLR4 requires myeloid differentiation factor 2 (MD2) as a co-receptor to recognize its ligand, lipopolysaccharides (LPS), which is an extracellular membrane component of gram-negative bacteria. Gambogic acid is a xanthonoid isolated from brownish or orange resin extracted from Garcinia hanburyi. Its primary effect is tumor suppression. Since inflammatory responses are related to the development of cancer, we hypothesized that gambogic acid may regulate TLR4 activation. Our results demonstrated that gambogic acid decreased the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines ($TNF-{\alpha}$, IL-6, IL-12, and $IL-1{\beta}$) in both mRNA and protein levels in bone marrow-derived primary macrophages after stimulation with LPS. Gambogic acid did not inhibit the activation of Interferon regulatory factor 3 (IRF3) induced by TBK1 overexpression in a luciferase reporter gene assay using IFN-${\beta}$-PRD III-I-luc. An in vitro kinase assay using recombinant TBK1 revealed that gambogic acid did not directly inhibit TBK1 kinase activity, and instead suppressed the binding of LPS to MD2, as determined by an in vitro binding assay and confocal microscopy analysis. Together, our results demonstrate that gambogic acid disrupts LPS interaction with the TLR4/MD2 complex, the novel mechanism by which it suppresses TLR4 activation.

  • This paper presents the ECG data compression method referred the adaptive fractal interpolation algorithm. In the previous piecewise fractal interpolation(PFI) algorithm, the size of range is fixed So, the reconstruction error of the PFI algorithm is nonuniformly distributed in the part of the original ECG signal. In order to improve this problem, the adaptive fractal interpolation(AEI) algorithm uses the variable range. If the predetermined tolerance was not satisfied, the range would be subdivided into two equal size blocks. large ranges are used for encoding the smooth waveform to yield high compression efficiency, and the smaller ranges are U for encoding rapidly varying parts of the signal to preserve the signal quality. The suggested algorithm was evaluated using MIT/BIH arrhythmia database. The AEI algorithm was found to yield a relatively low reconstruction error for a given compression ratio than the PFI algorithm. In applications where a PRD of about 7.13% was acceptable, the ASI algorithm yielded compression ratio as high as 10.51, without any entropy coding of the parameters of the fractal code.

  • Construction methods for underground structure are classified as bottom-up, up-up, and top-down methods depending on the procedure of construction related to a superstructure. In top-down construction methods, building's main structure is built from the ground level downwards by sequentially alternating ground excavation and structure construction. In the mean time, the main structure is also used as supporting structure for earth-retaining wall, which results in the increased stability of the earth-retaining wall due to the minimized deformation in adjacent structures and surrounding grounds. In addition, the method makes it easy to secure a field for construction work in the downtown area by using each floor slabs as working spaces. However top-down construction method is often avoided since an excavation under the slab has low efficiency and difficult environment for work, and high cost compared with earth anchor method. This paper proposes a combined construction method where semi-open cut is selected as excavation work, slurry as earth -retaining wall and CWS as top-down construction method. In the case study targeted for an actual construction project, the proposed method is compared with existing top-down construction method in terms of economic feasibility, construction period and work efficiency. The proposed construction method results in increased work efficiency in the transportation of earth and sand, and steel frame erection, better quality management in PHD construction, and reduced construction period.
