Discrimination of Three Emotions using Parameters of Autonomic Nervous System Response

  • Objective: The aim of this study is to compare results of emotion recognition by several algorithms which classify three different emotional states(happiness, neutral, and surprise) using physiological features. Background: Recent emotion recognition studies have tried to detect human emotion by using physiological signals. It is important for emotion recognition to apply on human-computer interaction system for emotion detection. Method: 217 students participated in this experiment. While three kinds of emotional stimuli were presented to participants, ANS responses(EDA, SKT, ECG, RESP, and PPG) as physiological signals were measured in twice first one for 60 seconds as the baseline and 60 to 90 seconds during emotional states. The obtained signals from the session of the baseline and of the emotional states were equally analyzed for 30 seconds. Participants rated their own feelings to emotional stimuli on emotional assessment scale after presentation of emotional stimuli. The emotion classification was analyzed by Linear Discriminant Analysis(LDA, SPSS 15.0), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Multilayer perceptron(MLP) using difference value which subtracts baseline from emotional state. Results: The emotional stimuli had 96% validity and 5.8 point efficiency on average. There were significant differences of ANS responses among three emotions by statistical analysis. The result of LDA showed that an accuracy of classification in three different emotions was 83.4%. And an accuracy of three emotions classification by SVM was 75.5% and 55.6% by MLP. Conclusion: This study confirmed that the three emotions can be better classified by LDA using various physiological features than SVM and MLP. Further study may need to get this result to get more stability and reliability, as comparing with the accuracy of emotions classification by using other algorithms. Application: This could help get better chances to recognize various human emotions by using physiological signals as well as be applied on human-computer interaction system for recognizing human emotions.

  • Recently, researches related with automative mechanism have been widely studied to increase the driver's safety by continuously monitoring the driver's health condition to prevent driver's drowsiness. This paper describes the design of wearable chest belt for ECG and reflectance pulse oximetry for SpO2 sensors based on wireless sensor network to monitor the driver's healthcare status. ECG, SpO2 and heart rate signals can be transmitted via wireless sensor node to base station connected to the server. Intelligent monitoring system is designed at the server to analyze the SpO2 and ECG signals. HRV (Heart Rate Variability) signals can be obtained by processing the ECG and PPG signals. HRV signals are further analyzed based on time and frequency domain to determine the driver's drowsiness status.

  • A mental task combined with noise background is an effective model of laboratory stress for study of psychophysiology of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The intensity of the background noise significantly affects both a subjective evaluation of experienced stress level during test and the physiological responses associated with mental load in noisy environments. Providing tests of similar difficulties we manipulated the background noise intensity as a main factor influencing a psychophysiological outcome and the analyzed reactivity along withe the noise intensity dimension. The goal of this study was to identify the patterns of ANS responses and the relevant subjective stress scores during performance of word recognition tasks on the background of white noise (WN) of the different intensities (55, 70 and 85 dB). Subjects were 27 college students (19-24 years old). BIOPAC, Grass Neurodata System and AcqKnowlwdge 3.5 software were used to record ECG, PPG, SCL, skin temperature, and respiration. Experimental manipulations were effective in producing subjective and physiological responses usually associated with stress. The results suggested that the following potential autonomic mechanisms might be involved in the mediation of the observed physiological responses: A sympathetic activation with parasympathetic withdrawal during mild 55 and 70dB noise (featured by similar profiles) and simultaneous activation of sympathetic and parasympathetic systems during intense 85dB WN. The parasympathetic activation in this case might be a compensatory effect directed to prevent sympathetic domination and to maintain optimal arousal state for the successful performance on mental stress task. It should be mentioned that obtained results partially support Gellhorn's (1960; 1970) "tuning phenomenon" as a possible mechanism underlying stress response.

  • Resource recovery and recycling of materials and products, including polyurethanes is viewed as a necessity in today's society. Most urethane polymers are made from a polyol and a diisocyanate. these and be chemicals such as water, diamines or diols that react with isocyanate groups and add to the polymer backbone. The problems of recycling polyurethane wastes has major technological, economic and ecological significance because polyurethane itself is relatively expensive and its disposal whether by burning is also costly. In general, the recycling methods for polyurethane could be classified as mechanical, chemical and feedstock. In the chemical recycling method, there are hydrolysis, glycolysis, pyrolysis and aminolysis. This study, the work was carried out glycolysis using sonication ant catalyzed reaction. Different kinds of recycled polyols were produced by current method(glycolysis), catalyzed reaction and sonication as decomposers and the chemical properties were analyzed. The reaction results in the formation of polyester urethane diols, the OH value which is determined by the quantity of diol used for the glycolysis conditions.   • As interest in wellness grows, There is a lot of research about monitoring individual health using wearable devices. Accordingly, a variety of methods have been studied to distinguish exercise from daily activities using wearable devices. Most of these existing studies are machine learning methods. However, there are problems with over-fitting on individual person's learning, data discontinuously recognition by independent segmenting and fake activity. This paper suggests a detection method for exercise activity based on the physiological response principle of heart rate up and down during exercise. This proposed method calculates activity intensity and heart rate from triaxial and photoplethysmography sensor to determine a heart rate recovery, then detects exercise by estimating activity intensity or detecting a heart rate rising state. Experimental results show that our proposed algorithm has 98.64% of averaged accuracy, 98.05% of averaged precision and 98.62% of averaged recall.

  • The advent of deep learning technologies has led to the development of various medical applications, making healthcare services more convenient and effective. Among these applications, heart rate estimation is considered a vital method for assessing an individual's health. Traditional methods, such as photoplethysmography through smart watches, have been widely used but are invasive and require additional hardware. Recent advancements allow for contactless heart rate estimation through facial image analysis, providing a more hygienic and convenient approach. In this paper, we propose a lightweight methodology capable of accurately estimating heart rate in mobile environments, using a specialized 2-channel network structure based on 2D convolution. Our method considers both subtle facial movements and color changes resulting from blood flow and muscle contractions. The approach comprises two major components: an Encoder for analyzing image features and a regression layer for evaluating Blood Volume Pulse. By incorporating both features simultaneously our methodology delivers more accurate results even in computing environments with limited resources. The proposed approach is expected to offer a more efficient way to monitor heart rate without invasive technology, particularly well-suited for mobile devices.

  • Purpose: Pylorus-preserving gastrectomy (PPG), which retains pyloric ring and gastric function, has been accepted as a function-preserving procedure for early gastric cancer for the prevention of postgastrectomy syndrome. This study was compared laparoscopy-assisted pylorus-preerving gastrectomy (LAPPG) with laparoscopy-assisted distal gastrectomy with Billroth-I reconstruction (LADGB I). Materials and Methods: Between November 2006 and September 2007, 39 patients with early gastric cancer underwent laparoscopy-assisted gastrectomy in the Department of Surgery at Korea Cancer Center Hospital. 9 of these patients underwent LAPPG and 18 underwent LADGBI. When LAPPG was underwent, we preserved the pyloric branch, hepatic branch, and celiac branch of the vagus nerve, the infrapyloric artery, and the right gastric artery and performed D1+$\beta$ lymphadenectomy to the exclusion of suprapyloric lymph node dissection. The distal stomach was resected while retaining a $2.5{\sim}3.0\;cm$ pyloric cuff and maintaining a $3.0{\sim}4.0\;cm$ distal margin for the resection. Results: The mean age for patients who underwent LAPPG and LADGBI were $59.9{\pm}9.4$ year-old and $64.1{\pm}10.0$ year-old, respectively. The sex ratio was 1.3 : 1.0 (male 5, female 4) in the LAPPG group and 2.6 : 1.0 (male 13, female 5) in the LADGBI group. Mean total number of dissected lymph nodes ($28.3{\pm}11.9$ versus $28.1{\pm}8.9$), operation time ($269.0{\pm}34.4$ versus $236.3{\pm}39.6$ minutes), estimated blood loss ($191.1{\pm}85.7$ versus $218.3{\pm}150.6\;ml$), time to first flatus ($3.6{\pm}0.9$ versus $3.5{\pm}0.8$ days), time to start of diet ($5.1{\pm}0.9$ versus $5.1{\pm}1.7$ days), and postoperative hospital stay ($10.1{\pm}4.0$ versus $9.2{\pm}3.0$ days) were not found significant differences (P>0.05). The postoperative complications were 1 patient with gastric stasis and 1 patient with wound seroma in LAPPG group and 1 patient with left lateral segment infarct of liver in the LADGB I group. Conclusion: Patients treated by LAPPG showed a comparable quality of surgical operation compared with those treated by LADGBI. LAPPG has an important role in the surgical management of early gastric cancer in terms of quality of postoperative life. Randomized controlled studies should be undertaken to analyze the optimal survival and long-term outcomes of this operative procedure.

Differentiation of children' five emotions with cardiovascular reactivity parameters (심혈관계 생리반응을 이용한 아동정서 구분)

  • 성인의 정서에 따른 심혈관계 반응의 변화에 대한 연구는 많이 있으나, 아동 정서에 따른 심혈관계 반응에 대한 연구는 거의 없는 실정이다. 본 연구에서는 본 연구실에서 개발한 자극을 이용하여 유발된 정서에 따른 심혈관계 반응의 차이를 규명하고자 한다. 복합자극으로 구성된 아동용 정서유발 프로토콜을 사용하여 아동에게 다섯가지 정서(기쁨, 슬픔, 분노, 스트레스, 무료함)를 유발시키는 동안 심혈관계 반응(ECG, PPG)을 측정하였다. 실험참여 아동은 만 5세에서 9세 사이의 아동으로 모두 141명이며, 분석에는 132명 (학령전 남: 30/ 학령전 여: 33/ 학령후 남:37, 학령후 여:32)의 데이터가 활용되었다. 분석에 사용하나 심혈관계 생리반응 변수는 심박률(HR), 호흡주기 관련 심박률변화 (RSA), 심박률분산(HRV), 심박률분산의 고주파수성분 (HFHRV)과 저주파수성분 (LF HRV), 혈류량 (FPV)이었다. 이 변수들 중 심박률, R파 간 간격을 기준으로 한 심박률변산의 고주파수 성분과 저주파수 성분, 그리고 혈류량에서 정서에 따라 유의미한 차이가 나타났다. 심박률은 기쁨, 슬픔을 스트레스나 무료함과 구분할 수 있고, 분노를 다른 정서들과 구분하는 것으로 나타났다. 혈류량 역시 분노와 다른 정서들 간에 유의미한 차이를 보였다. 고주파수 성분은 무료함을 나머지 정서들과, 저주파수 성분은 슬픔, 스트레스를 무료함과 구별할 수 있었다. 정서에 따라서는, 기쁨과 분노 유발정서에서는 심박률과 혈류량이 감소하였고, 슬픔은 심박률과 저주파수성분이 감소하였으며, 스트레스는 독특하게 심박률이 감소하였다. 그리고 무료함에서는 고주파수성분과 저주파수성분은 증가하고 혈류량은 감소하는 특징적인 양상을 보였다. 결론적으로 본 연구는 심혈관계 반응을 이용하여 아동정서를 구분하는 것이 가능함을 밝혔다.공을 제외한 BH-2, BH-3호공에서의 이방성 투수량계수텐서값은 이 논문의 가정인 대수층이 이방성이고 균질하다는 가정에 일치하지 않았다. 따라서 원형좌표계에 도시하였을 때 다른 공에 비해서 비균질성이 심한 결과로 인해 이방성타원체 에서 많이 벗어남을 보였다. 이로인해 3개의 공 BH-1, BH-4, BH-5호공을 사용하여 대수층의 이방성을 분석하여 보았다. BH-1호공에서의 $T_{{\varepsilon}{\varepsilon}}$는 171.90 $m^2$/day, $T_{ηη}$는 71.0l $m^2$/day이고 주 텐서방향은 Nl5.39$^{\circ}$ E로 나타났다. BH-4호공의 $T_{{\varepsilon}{\varepsilon}}$는 268.20 $m^2$/day, $T_{ηη}$는 28.75 $m^2$/day이고 주 텐서방향은 N7.55$^{\circ}$E이며 BH-5호공에서의 $T_{{\varepsilon}{\varepsilon}}$는 168.40 $m^2$/day, $T_{ηη}$는 66.80 $m^2$/day이고 주 텐서방향은 N76.59$^{\circ}$E로 나타났다. 이처럼 연구지역에서의 각각의 공에 대한 투수량계수텐서는 서로 다르게 나타났으며 이에 따른 주 텐서방향도 서로 다름을 알 수 있다.. ANS Responses Induced by Humor and Joy Using Audio-visual Film Clips (동영상 자극에 의해 유발된 유머 및 기쁨 정서에 따른 아동의 자율신경계 반응)

  • A review of recent studies indicates that positive emotions help buffer stress. In particular, humor is what only human can appreciate. Humor plays an important role in many facets of human life including psychological, social, and somatic functioning. This study is to identify children's ANS responses by humor or joy using audio-visual film clips. 49 male and female children (12-13 years) participated in this study. The participants were briefed on the experiment was its procedure. During the experiment, electrodes were attached to participant and middle fingers of left hands. Physiological responses(EDA, SKT, PPG and ECG) were measured for 30s both in the resting state and experiment state during which emotion provoking stimulus was presented for 2 min. Also, self-report on emotions was followed for 1 min. Results from the self-report showed that both humor and joy were evoked effectively among 89.3% of children. It explains that emotion-eliciting stimuli were effective and appropriate. ANS responses in both emotion were significant in three physiological variables (i.e., SCL, NSCR, LF). There was a significant difference between humor emotion and joy emotion, and both emotions were distinguishable by a specific ANS response pattern.
