Cellulose has attracted much attention as potential reinforcements in green composites. In this study, polypropylene (PP)/cellulose composites were prepared by melt-blending followed by compression molding. To improve interfacial bonding between PP and cellulose, maleic anhydride-grafted polypropylene (MAPP) was used. Mechanical properties of the PP/cellulose composites were investigated by UTM and izod impact tester. Thermal properties of the PP/cellulose composites were investigated by TGA and DSC. SEM images for the fracture surfaces of the composites showed that the MAPP was effective in improving PP/cellulose interfacial bonding. Tensile strength and modulus of the composite were maxima when MAPP content, based on cellulose content, was 3 wt%. With increasing cellulose content, the impact strength of the composites decreased but the tensile strength and modulus increased.
Compounding, using such thermoplastic elastomer as styrene-ethylene-butadiene-styrene (SEBS) blended with polypropylene(PP), oil, and other ingredients, was studied to develop a new material with excellent impact resistance and resilience for the replacement of environmentally toxic PVC sheet. Hardness decreased linearly with oil content in the SEBS/oil blend, and the tensile strength increased with PP content whereas elongation showed no effects over 50 phr of PP in SEBS/oil/PP blend. In the practical SEBS composition, proposed to replace the PVC sheet material, tensile and tear strength, as well as hardness, increased proportionally with PP content, while melt index decreased.

The study conducted an experiment in which residual aggregate and polypropylene fibers are mixed in concrete, and an experiment in which granite and polypropylene fibers are mixed. Two types of experiments, in particular, changed the amount of polypropylene fibers, and examined the mechanical properties of slump, compressive strength, tensile strength and the like. To establish a light and easy-to-use material for landscape construction and packaging material development by comparing two kinds of experimental results, comparing and analyzing residual aggregate as experimental materials and materials using granite soil to prevent partial destruction due to cracks in drying shrinkage. The more the amount of the PP fibers increases in concrete, the more the volume of the PP fibers increases, the less the slump is determined. As a result of the compressive strength, the cast-down earth concrete is measured to be about 59% to 71% of the concrete strength. As the amount of PP fibers mixed in increased, the compression strength showed a relative decrease. As a result of tensile strength, it is found that the granite concrete is about 68-67% of concrete tensile strength. It was found that the compression strength decreased as the amount of PP fibers mixed in concrete or fire-gant concrete was increased. Then, when polypropylene fibers are mixed in the concrete and the concrete, it is found that tensile strength is increased. By analyzing these results, a fixed amount of PP fiber is mixed in the concrete mixed with the granite soil and utilized for various structures in the field of landscape construction or materials related to packaging, the prevention and improvement effect of the structure is determined.

Spalling is defined as damages to concrete exposed to high temperature during fire, causing cracks and localized bursting of small pieces of concrete. As the concrete strength increases, the degree of damage caused by spalling becomes more serious due to impaired permeability. It is reported that polypropylene(PP) fiber has an important role in protecting concrete from spalling, and the optimum dosage of PP fiber is 0.2%. However, this study was conducted on non-reinforced concrete specimens. The high-temperature behavior of high-strength reinforced concrete columns with various concrete strength and various quantity of PP fibers is investigated in this study. The results revealed that the ratio of unstressed residual strength of columns increased as the concrete strength increased and as the quantity of PP fiber increased from 0% to 0.2%. However, the effect of PP fiber quantity on residual strength of column was barely above 0.2%.
Polypropylene(PP)/carbon fiber(CF)/multi-walled carbon nanotube(MWCNT) nanocomposites along with various CF and MWCNT contents were prepared in a Twin screw extruder. Electrical, mechanical property and morphology were investigated with a variation of CF and MWCNT contents. From the surface resistance of PP/CF/MWCNT composites, MWCNT can increase the conductivity of composites compared with PP/CF composites without MWCNT. It is suggested that MWCNT and CF can make the conductive network in the polymer matrix. Flexural modulus and Izod impact strength of the PP/CF/MWCNT composites were improved with the increase of CF contents. Morphology showed that length of CF in polymer matrix was shortened by torque during melt mixing with MWCNT. As a result of this phenomenon, the impact strength of composites was somewhat decreased.
Polypropylene(PP) is a textile material with various functions such as eco-friendliness, lightness, and elasticity. Although most synthetic fibers can be dyed and finished, but original PP is difficult to dye or finish due to its extremely hydrophobic properties, so its application expansion is limited. In order to solve this problem, dyeable PP was developed, and various researches on textiles for clothing such as mass production technology, fine fiberization and performance improvement are in progress. Plasma treatment is a processing method for modifying the surface of fabrics, and has effects such as hydrophilization, deepening color, improving adhesion, and surface polymerization. In this study, plasma treatment was applied to study changes in hydrophilization properties of dyeable PP, surface changes before and after plasma treatment and performance according to hydrophilization.

Nanocomposites of polypropylene with organically modified clays were compounded on a twin-screw extruder by two-step melt compounding of three components, i.e., polypropylene, maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MA), and organically modified clay. The effect of PP-g-MA compatibilizers, including PH-200, Epolene-43, Polybond-3002, Polybond-3200, with a wide range of maleic anhydride (MA) content and molecular weight was examined. Morphologies of nanocomposites and their mechanical properties such as stiffness, strength, and impact resistance were investigated. X-ray diffraction patterns showed that the dispersion morphology of clay particles seemed to be determined in the first compounding step and the further dispersion of clays didn't occur in the second compounding step. As the ratio of PP-g-MA to clay increased, the clay particles were dispersed more uniformly in the matrix resin. As the dispersibility of clays was enhanced, the reinforcement effect of the clays increased, however impact resistance decreased.

The surface energies and acid-base interaction between the untreated and treated Jute or Hemp fibers and different matrix compositions of polypropylene-maleic anhydride polypropylene copolymers (PP-MAPP) were investigated using dynamic contact angle measurement. The contribution of the acid-base property into the interfacial adhesion of the natural fibers/matrix systems were characterized by calculating the work adhesion coming from the acid-base interaction. On the other hand, microfailure mechanism of both single Jute and Hemp fiber bundles were investigated using the combination of single fiber tensile test and acoustic emission. Distinctly different micro failure modes of the different natural fiber/polypropylene systems wet ε observed using optical microscope and determined indirectly by AE and their FFT analysis.

The effects of antioxidants and thermal treatment on the radiation resistance of the gamma-ray irradiated polypropylene (PP) were studied. The PP was blended with various antioxidants and was fabricated into a sheet. The PP sheet was irradiated with gamma-ray to a dosage of 25kGy in the nitrogen atmosphere. The differences in both color and mechanical strength were investigated for the gamma-ray irradiated PP depending on the kind and the content of antioxidant. The residual amount of free radical and the variation of oxidation index were investigated for the gramma-ray irradiated PP with thermal treatment after irradiation. The PP having phosphite antioxidant showed little difference in color after gamma-ray irradiation compared with the PP having phenolic or mine antioxidant. Sufficient amount of free radical could be removed from the gamma-ray irradiated PP by the thermal treatment at $130\;^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. Thermally treated PP showed lower oxidation index than the PP without thermal treatment.
Physical and chemical changes of black rice cake were investigated to determine its packaging material during storage. Black rice cake was packaged with polyethylene(PE) or polypropylene(PP) film and stored in RH 65% at 20$^{\circ}C$ for 5 months. There were no differences between PP and PE films for color, hardness and rancidity during storage, while weight change and water activity were slightly different between two films. Weight and water activity of black rice cakes packaged with PE or PP were increased during storage. Weight change and water activity of PE were slightly higher than those of PP. In conclusion, quality changes of black rice cake packaged with flexible packaging materials were little different between PP and PE during storage.
