  • In this paper, a numerical analysis technique using a body force model is investigated to estimate the available net thrust of multi-pod-driven ice-breaking vessels under bollard pull and overload conditions. To employ the body force model in present flow simulations, drag and thrust components acting on the pod unit are calculated by using Propeller Open Water (POW) test data. The available net thrusts according to the direction of operation are evaluated in both bollard pull and overload conditions under deep water. The simulation results are compared with the model test data. The available net thrusts, calculated by the present analysis for ahead operating modes at 3~6 knots which are typical speeds of the target vessel in arctic field, are agreed well with the model test results. It is also found that the present result for astern operating mode appears approximately 6 % larger than the model test result. In addition, the available net thrusts are calculated under the both operating conditions accompanied by shallow water effects, and the main cause of the difference is studied. Based on the result of the present study, it is confirmed that the body force model can be applied to the performance evaluation of multi-pod propulsion system and the main engine selection in early design stage of the vessel.

  • This study numerically carried out the propeller open water test(POW) by solving Navier-Stokes equations governing the three-dimensional unsteady incompressible viscous flow with the turbulence closure model of the ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ SST model. Numerical simulations are performed at various range of advance ratios. Corresponding to Reynolds numbers of $5.89{\times}105{\sim}6.47{\times}105$ based on free stream velocity and the chord length at 0.7 propeller radius. The present results give a good agreement with those of the experiment. The propeller induced vortical structures have been analyzed by visualizing the resultant vorticity. As the advance ratio increases, the magnitude and length of the resultant vorticity decrease significantly. As the main focus of present study, the numerical model to present the ($r-{\theta}$) plane-averaged resultant vorticity along the streamwise direction for various advance ratios has been suggested.

  • Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems are essential parts of power system which employ a wide range of computers and communication technologies. The traditional SCADA system is mainly for information exchange in only one company, and the information is provided only to the operator or administrator. But in the deregulated environment, we need much more information, which can be exchanged among different companies. With the rapid development of internet, we can use it to access information easily. This paper proposes web technologies to be applied in power system in order to display some important information through accessing data from database, and to realize the real time control of the substation. The functions of SCADA system will be implemented by a set of Web-based components. The monitoring and control of standard 154[kV] substation model is already realized in the laboratory test. The Web-based SCADA system is able to provide sufficient information and control for pow or system through an efficient and economical way.

  • In order to elucidate the possibility of artificial production of p. ferulae by solid-state culture, the optimization of culture conditions was carried out. When $NH_4H_2PO_4$ and $CaCO_3$ were used in the cultures using test tube with 30 g of Populus sawdust at $25^{\circ}C{\pm}1$ in the dark, the favored mycelial growth was observed with $1\%$ of $NH_4H_2PO_4$ and the production of polysaccharide was 7.85 mg/100 mg of mycelium with $1\%$ of $CaCO_3$. The mixtures of $80\%$ of Populus Sawdust and $20\%$ of rice bran at $60\%$ of water content were determined to be optimal for the production of fruiting bodies in the sawdust culture. When three treatments containing various ratios of garlic powder were conducted, yields of fruiting bodies were drasti[ally higher than those of Synthetic mixture without garlic powder The highest yield (143 g/bag) was obtained with $7\%$ garlic powder. The yield of synthetic mixture containing $7\%$ of garlic powder was $83\%$ higher than that of Sawdust culture. The reason why garlic powder did support growth was not clear but it is possible that garlic powder might contain effective components for the formation of fruiting body. The optimal synthetic mixture composition consisted of cotton seed $77\%$, lime $6.4\%,\;K_2HPO_4\;0.2\%,\;KH_2PO_4\;0.2\%,\;CaHPO_4\;0.2\%$, corn flour $4\%$, wheat flour $5\%$, and garlic pow-der $7\%$.

  • In this study, a new concept of aluminum-matrix composites and the possibility of in-situ processing are suggested, and preliminary results on AI- Ti system are presented. Fine powders of AI-lO% Ti were prepared by the gas atomization so that fine $Al_3Ti$ formed into flake shape. A 25v/o $Al_3Ti/Al$ composite sample was made by the powd er metallurgy process involving hot extrusion. Microstructure and mechanical behavior both at room temperature and high temperatures were analysed by OM, SEM, TEM and tension test. Microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties of the composites exhibited similar behavior to those of $SiC_w/2124$ composites. Merits and drawbacks of the $Al_3Ti/Al$ composites are discussed together with a possibility of further improvement.

  • Cavitation refers to a phenomenon in which empty spaces occur in a fluid due to changes in pressure and a velocity. When a liquid moves at a high speed, the pressure drops below the vapor pressure, and vapor bubbles are generated in the liquid. This study used CFD to analyze the flow of fluid machinery used in marine and offshore plants. The goals are to ensure the validity of the analysis method for marine propellers in an open water test, to increase the forward ratio, and to use FLUENT to understand the flow pattern due to cavitation. A three-dimensional analysis was performed and compared with experimental data from MOERI. The efficiency was highest at advance ratios of 0.7 - 0.8. Thrust was generated due to the difference between the pressure surface and the suction surface, and it was estimated that bubbles would be generated in the vicinity of the back side surface rather than the face side of the propeller, resulting in more cavitation. The cavitation decreased sharply as the advance ratio increased. The thrust and torque coefficients were comparable to those of the MOERI experimental data except at the advance ratio of 1, which showed a difference of less than 5%. Therefore, it was confirmed that CFD can evaluate an open water propeller test.

  • The purpose of this study was to observe the changes of the elemental transmission and bond strength between the metal and porcelain according to various kinds of ion beam mixing method. ion beam mixing of $meta1/SiO_2$ (silica), $meta1/Al_2O_3$(alumina) interfaces causes reactions when the $Ar^+$ was implanted into bilayer thin films using a 100KeV accelerator which was designed and constructed for this study. A vacuum evaporator used in the $10^{-5}-10^{-6}$ Torr vacuum states for the evaporation. For this study, three kinds of porcelain metal selected, -precious, semiprecious, and non-precious. Silica and alumina were deposited to the metal by the vacuum evaporator, separately. One group was treated by two kinds of dose of the ion beam mixing $(1\times10^{16}ions/cm^2,\;5\times10^{15}ions/cm^2)$, and the other group was not mixed, and analyzed the effects of ion beam mixing. The analyses of bond strength, elemental transmissions were performed by the electron spectroscopy of chemical analysis (ESCA), light and scanning electron microscope, scratch test, and micro Vickers hardness tests. The finding led to the following conclusions. 1. In the scanning electron and light microscopic views, ion beam mixed specimens showed the ion beam mixed indentation. 2. In the micro Vickers hardness and scratch tests, ion beam mixed specimens showed higher strength than that of non mixed specimens, however, nonprecious metal showed a little change in the bond strength between mixed and non mixed specimens. 3. In the scratch test, ion beam mixed specimens showed higher shear strength than that of non treated specimens at the precious and semiprecious groups. 4. In the ESCA analysis, Au-O and Au-Si compounds were formed and transmission of the Au peak was found ion beam mixed $SiO_2/Au$ specimen, simultaneously, in the higher and lower bonded areas, and ion beam mixed $SiO_2/Ni-Cr$ specimen, oxygen, that was transmitted from $SiO_2\;to\;SiO_2/Ni-Cr$ interface combined with 12% of Ni at the interface.

  • Recently, small-scale excavation like ground cavity restoration and buried pipe replacement works are being carried out in urban area, in order to improve living convenience. This paper describes experiment results on the ground reinforcement method that can reduce the buried pipe damage, when the differential settlement occurred due to poor compaction of ground below the buried pipe. Plate load tests were conducted to evaluate a reinforcement effect of ground using concrete mat and expansion mat in the ground below the buried pipe. The results showed that the stress reduction ratio by concrete mat and expansion mat according to the surcharge load was about 46%~48% and 39%~42%, respectively. Therefore, the differential settlement of the buried pipe and the ground deformation below the buried pipes were reduced by the reinforcement effect of the concrete mat and expansion mat. This means that it is possible to prevent a buried pipe damage due to underground cavity and ground subsidence, if concrete mat and expansion mat are reinforced in the ground below the buried pipe or on the ground between the buried pipes.
