The purpose of this study is on identifying charactreistics and management direction of complementary pond of Dalmaji village in Gangjin. Accordingly, this village was indicated as Experience and Resort village by Korean government. This study describes the construction background and characteristics and identifies species diversity and characteristics through field survey. For this, literature and field survey was performed. In field survey, vegetational survey was performed in Aug. of 2015. D(Dominant degree) and S(Sociability degree) was measured by Brown-Blanquet's method. The answer was searched from Myungsanron(明山論), a textbook of Fengsui(風水) in Joseon dynasty. Of these causes, it was considered that the representative one is a protection of fire and infectious disease because the Wolgak mountain is a fire mountain(火山) as a stone mountain in Fengsui. The results demonstrate decline of aquatic ecosystem because of neglect management. The total number of species was 24. Of the species, Zelkova serrata is a natural vegetation of this complementary forest. This is nominated as Lagerstroemia indica and Camellia japonica community. Species composition demonstrate the characteristics of Korean southern region as mixed forest of evergreen trees and deciduous ones which are indigenous plants. It was considered Juniperus chinensis KaizukaVariega in central round island was planted in Japanese colonial period and it have to be removed. It was considered that name of moon pond and moon island etc. projects the mind of village ancestors which are going to reach an ideal condition of moon. And management of quantity and depth of pond water was critical for restoration of disappearing lotus from related literature. Periodic management was needed for ecological structure and function improvement because of ecological disturbance by the invasive plants like Humulus japonicus.

The gastrointestinal endocrine cells of the Pond tortoise, Amyda sinensis were studied immunohistochemically, and somatostatin-, gastrin/cholecystokinin(GAS/CCK)-, glucagon-, 5-hydroxytryptamine(5-HT)-, insulin- and chromogranin-immunoreactive cells were revealed. The characteristic findings of the regional distribution and relative frequency of these immunoreative cells in the gastrointestinal tract of the Pond tortoise were as follows; A few somatostatin-immunoreactive cells were distributed from the segment I to the segment V. GAS/CCK-immunoreactive cells were found from the segment III to the segment VII. These cells were numerous in the segment III and a few in the other segments. A few glucagon-immunoreactive cells were found in the segment I and rare in the segment II. 5-HT-immunoreactive cells were found throughout the gastrointestinal tract. Numerous numbers of them were found in the segment I, while moderate or a few in the other segments. Insulin-immunoreactive cells were distributed from the segment II to the segment IX. Moderate numbers of them were found in the segment VIII and IX, while a few in the other segments. Chromogranin-immunoreactive cells were found from the segment III to the segment VI. Moderate numbers of these cells were found in the segment IV and V, while a few in the other segments. BPP-immunoreactive cells were not observed throughout the gastrointestinal tract of the Pond tortoise, Amyda sinensis.
The oxygen solubilized device(O.S.D) and standardized microorganism culture system is more efficient than physical and chemical purification techniques in closed water. This study was to determine how the O.S.D and standardized culture system is efficient in purification capacity in closed water based on the lab scale and pilot plant. In the batch test, inducing the quantitative results from pilot plant operation condition, removal efficiency of COD and TN were about 48.3% and 35% respectively, while SS and chlorophyll-a were 94.9% and 68.7%. The pilot plant results showed that suspended solid(SS) and chlorophyll-a removal efficiency were 60% and 59% respectively, due to coagulation characteristics by standardized culture. Total nitrogen(TN) and total phosphorus(TP)showed good effect for the purification of target pond water quality from field data. Additionally, released velocity was determined in control condition of $5.31mgPO{_4}^{3-}{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}day^{-1}$ and $2486.8mgCOD{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}day^{-1}$. Otherwise, phosphate and COD reflux in the aeration and microorganism condition was showed $-9.95mgPO{_4}^{3-}{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}day^{-1}$ and $-397.88mgCOD{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}day^{-1}$. This technology is the most effective not only removal of SS and chlorophyll-a but also control of phosphate and COD release which is very important phenomena in evaluating water quality in closed water like a reservoir and pond.
The ultrastructure of the matured egg envelope in Pond smelt, Hypomesus nipponensis belonging to Osmeridae, Osmeriformes were investigated by routine light and electron microscopes. The matured egg have two egg envelopes and have a single micropyle, which is thought to the pathway of sperm in the area of the animal pole. An outer egg envelope was surrounded by a follicular layer and outer surface of inner egg envelope have structure with high electron density. Also, the inner egg envelope consisted of 6 horizontal lamellae with higher electron density alternating with 5 interlamellae of lower electron density. Many grooves distributed on the outer surface of outer egg envelope, and the outer surface of inner egg envelope was covered by amorphous structures. In conclusion, the egg of teleost is surrounded by one egg envelope according to the studies on morphology of egg envelope up to the present. The fact that have two egg envelopes is a species specificity of Pond smelt and these ultrastructural characters of egg envelope can be utilized in taxonomy of teleost.

Nitrate($NO_3-N$) and total nitrogen(TN) removal by a reed wetland with open water(Wetland 1) was compared with that of a reed wetland without open water(Wetland 2) from March to October 2002. The two wetlands were 25mL by 6mW. An open water area, 3mL by 6mW was designed at the middle of Wetland 1. Reeds(Phragmites australis) were transplanted into the wetlands in June 2000. Water of Sinyang Stream flowing into the Kohung Estuarine Lake located in the southern part of Korea was pumped into a primary treatment pond, whose effluent was discharged into the secondary pond. Effluent from the secondary pond was funneled into the wetlands. Inflow into the wetlands averaged about 20.0$m^3$/day and their hydraulic retention time was approximately 1.5 days. Average $NO_3-N$ removal by Wetland 1 was 117.61mg/$m^2{\cdot}day$ and that by Wetland 2 was 106.39mg/$m^2{\cdot}day$. $NO_3-N$ removal efficiency of Wetland 1 and 2 was 37% and 34%, respectively. TN removal by Wetlands 1 and 2 averaged 226.80 and 214.54mg/$m^2{\cdot}day$, respectively. TN abatement efficiency of Wetland 1 was 43% and that of Wetland 2 was 40%. $NO_3-N$ removal efficiency of Wetland 1 was significantly higher(p=0.038) than Wetland 2. TN removal efficiency of Wetland 1 was also significantly higher(p=0.044) than Wetland 2. The wetland with open water was more efficient for removal of $NO_3-N$ and TN than one without.

Preeminent water treatment plans are essential to preserve the water quality of aquatic biotopes. Previous studies have not been sufficient to provide cost-effective maintenance method since they focused only on the purification of deteriorated water that requires a continuous supply of clean water. This study proposes an economical method of water quality maintenance using water treatment media block constructed vertically using porous ceramics, zeolite, and river pebble. The water treatment media block does not require a separate purification area because it functions as a purifier within the ecological pond which can maximize the biotope area. To evaluate the performance of the water treatment media block, we longitudinally tracked the change of water quality indicators (pH, TDS, COND, DO, T-P, T-N, COD) suggested by Water Environment Standards, Ministry of Environment, Republic of Korea. We compared the water quality of one control (A: general ecological pond composition method of the laminated structure) and two experimental groups (B: a combination of aquatic plants and a water treatment media block, C: a water treatment media block only). As a result, we confirmed that the water treatment media block is an efficient and economical method to maintaining the water quality of the ecological pond for a long time. The water treatment media block will be a great help in providing a better aquatic biotope space for aquatic insects and fishes living in clear water.

We have increasing number of new ponds planned and designed in traditional styles. However, many of the stoneworks at the edges of those new ponds are not the characteristics of our traditional ponds. This study is aiming at surveying and analysing the building techniques of Korean traditional water edges built with stones, by investigating selected ponds in royal palace gardens. This study was conducted through field investigation and literature reviews. Nine ponds from Gyongbok Palace, Changdeok Palace, and Changgyong Palace, which have many well-preserved ponds of various styles, were surveyed. First of all, the building materials (stones), or the kinds and sizes of stones used for the edges of ponds were surveyed. Secondly, construction methods, or the height and techniques of buildings stone walls were surveyed. Major findings were, first, the edges of most ponds constructed with granite Jangdaeseok, usually 120cm-140cm long, and 30cm-40cm thick. The only exceptions were those ponds which seemed to have been influenced by Japanese style. Second, typical pond ages were up-right vertical walls. Granite jangdaeseoks were piled-up 2 stories or up to six stories. Exceptions were Bandoji Pond and Chundangji Pond which had been constructed during latest period(King 'Ghojong' period). Third, heith of stone walls were between 60cm and 220cm. The depth of ponds were about 150cm or less, and the rest of the edge wall height was freeboard. Though the results of this study was not made by precise investigation and actual measurement, they could be fundamental information and data for the traditional styles of the Chosun dynasty Palace. It is believed that continuous researches on this matter will result in important and fundamental data of the establishment of traditional water edges.

A Sustainable Structured wetland Biotop (SSB) system was planned, designed, and finally constructed, and maintained in the An-teo Reservoir ecological park, which is the habitat of the endangered Gold-spotted Pond Frog. The system purifies polluted water of An-teo Reservoir which flows from up to bottom within the system. Water was sampled once a month at the inlet and at the outlet from December, 2009 to August, 2010. BOD5, SS, T-N and T-P were analyzed. Average influent and effluent BOD5 concentration was 2.9 and 1.0 mg/L, respectively, and BOD5 removal was 67%. SS concentration of influent and effluent averaged 18.1 mg/L and 2.5 mg/L, respectively, and SS abatement amounted to 86%. Average influent and effluent T-N concentration was 0.426 mg/L and 0.147 mg/L, respectively, and T-N retention was 66%. T-P concentration of influent and effluent averaged 0.071 mg/L and 0.022 mg/L, respectively, and T-P removal amounted to 68%. Plant and frog species of the system were monitored during the period. Amphibia and reptiles provided 7 species and 4 families including the Endangered Gold-Spotted Pond Frog (Rana chosenica ) which also lives in the system. Twenty-six plant species were naturally introduced into the system, however, they didn't make up a significant portion of the plant populations compared with the planted species. The endangered plants, Bladderwort (Utricularia vulgaris var. japonica ) and Euryale ferox were observed in An-teo Reservoir as well as in the system.
The effect of cement on survival, LC/sub 50/, safe concentration (SC) and application factors of pollutant (AF) for pond smelt, Hypomesus olidus were investigated for 96 hours. Mean body length of pond smelt used in this experiment was 8.6±1.2 cm. Cement concentrations established in this experiment were 0 (control group), 10, 25, 50, 100, 250, 500, and 1,000 ppm, respectively. All fishes were dead in concentration more than 500 ppm cement within 4 hours. The LC/sub 50/ to cement toxicity was 123.03 ppm for 48h, 91.20 ppm for 72 h and 58.88 ppm for 96h. The value of SC and AF to cement toxicity for this species were 2.64∼9.14 ppm and 0.045∼0.155, respectively.

We have confirmed the first case of mass mortality which occurred in the wild populations of larval toad, Bufo bufo gargarizans during 2007~2009 at Mangwel pond, which is a long time breeding site, and is located at the south eastern area in Daegu. We have investigated through microbiological tests the cause of mass decease of the larval toad, and detected numerous bacteria from the intestine by histological examines and cultures. The pathogen isolated from the infected larval toads has been identified as Aeromonas hydrophila, which is widely distributed in aquatic environment. However, this phenomenon of mass lethal pattern of the larval toad disappeared at the breeding pond after maintaining better water levels and low temperature in spring during breeding season in 2010. We propose that the high temperatures during the 2007~2009 breeding season resulted in lower water levels and drier conditions leading to explosive propagation of A. hydrophila in the pond which impacted the larval toad's immune function.
