To develop oral controlled release dosage forms, ionic interactions between polymers and drugs were evaluated. Hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose and carboxymethylene were used as model nonionic and ionic polymers, respectively. 5-fluorouracil, propranolol-HCl and sodium salicylate were selected as model nonionic, cationic and anionic, respectively. Polymer-drug mixtures were compressed into tablets and drug release kinetics from these tablets were determined. Drug release from the tablets made of the nonionic polymer was not affected by the charge of drugs, rather, was regulated by the solubility of drugs in different pH releasing media. However, drug release kinetics were significantly affected when drug-polymer ionic interactions exist. Enhanced drug release was observed from anionic drug-anionic polymer tablets due to ionic repulsion, whereas drug release was retarded in cationic drug-anionic polymer tablets owing to ionic attractive force. Therefore, the results suggested that the polymer-drug interactions are important factors in designing controlled release dosage forms.

Melt blending of Bisphenol A polycarbonate (PC) and poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT) was carried out over the entire composition range. The mixing time was varied up to 90 min. The resulting samples were analyzed by FT-IR, DSC, XRD, DMTA, $^{1}H NMR$, and SEM. The process of transesterification between the two polymers and their resulting compatibilization were observed. The behaviors of the PTT-rich and PC-rich blends were different and an equilibrium was found to exist. Peculiar behavior, which was different from that of the PTT-rich and PC-rich blends, was exhibited by the 50/50 (PTT/PC) blend.

A new type solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) composed of poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and lithium trifluoromethanesulfonate ($LiCF_{3}SO_{3}$) was prepared by means of the solution cast technique to observe that Li ion can move by ion hopping decoupled from polymer segmental motion inside of the 'fast cationic transport process'. The highest ion conductivity of the SPEs obtained from ac impedance measurements was $1.42{\times}10^{-3}S/cm$ at room temperature for SPE with 80wt% of salt concentration. Using LSV, we found that the SPEs had good electrochemical stabilities and using FT-IR and AFM, we found the formation of network-like structure.

A number of new ideas have been implemented to control the droplet morphology and electrooptic properties of holographic polymer dispersed liquid crystal (HPDLC). Doping of conductive fullerene particles to the conventional HPDLC induced dual effects of reducing both droplet coalescence and operating voltage. Chain transfer agent gave higher gel content with lower crosslink density, less dark reactions and less grating shrinkage with much smooth LC-polymer interfaces. Addition of octanoic acid (OA) to the formulation of HPDLC gave a decrease in droplet size and monotonic increase of the off state diffraction throughout the OA content.

Sericin was modified by solution blending (10-30 wt%) with 70-90 wt% polyacrylamide (PAM) in water. The reactive sites of sericin such as serine and tyrosine were attached to PAM. Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance ($^{1}H-NMR$) and thermogravimetric analysis were used to characterize the modified sericin. The electrospinning conditions i.e. the blend composition and the power supply voltage, at a tip to target distance of 15 cm were studied. The morphology of nanoparticles and nanofibers was observed by scanning electron microscopy. The average particles size of the nanoparticle obtained was 191 nm and nanofibers was 150-300 nm.
In this paper, we report the fabrication of high quality polymer walls by using a monomer containing fluorine (F-monomer). Polymer walls with no phase retardation were fabricated by using photo-polymerization induced anisotropic phase separation of the mixture composed of liquid crystal (LC) and F-monomer. Thanks to the immiscibility of fluoride, we could form high quality polymer walls with no light leakage. We measured electro-optic characteristics of a twisted-nematic (TN) LC cell whose polymer walls were fabricated by using the F-monomer, and the measurements were compared with that fabricated by using the monomer without fluorine.

We have studied the optically compensated splay (OCS) mode using reactive mesogen monomer to reduce critical voltage, setting voltage and phase transition time from initial bend to splay state. The high pretilt angle from vertical alignment was formed through the polymerization of UV curable RM monomer at the surfaces. In this way, orientation of the LC with OCS can be achieved without setting voltage.
In general, the drying shrinkage of polymer-modified mortars using redispersible polymer powders is much higher than that of unmodified mortar. The purpose of this study is to reduce the drying shringkage of polymer-modified mortars using a redispersible poly(ethylene-vinyl acetate) (EVA) powder, which is widely used for the manufacture of prepackaged-type polymer-modified mortar products at present. Polymer-modified mortars using the redispersible EVA powder with powdered shrinkage-reducing agent were prepared with various polymer-cement ratios and shrinkage-reducing agent contents, and tested for drying shrinkage and strength. From the test results, the drying shrinkage of the redispersible EVA powder-modified mortars with a powdered shrinkage agent is remarkably reduced with increasing shrinkage-reducing agent content, and becomes approximately a half of that of the redispersible EVA powder-modified mortars with the same polymer-cement ratios and without the shrinkage-reducing agent at a shrinkage-reducing agent content of 6%.
In this work, the electrophoretic motion of dsDNA molecule represented by a polymer through an artificial nano-pore in a membrane is simulated using the numerical method combining the lattice Boltzmann and Langevin molecular dynamic method. The polymer motion is represented by Langevin molecular dynamics technique while the fluid flow is taken into account by fluctuating lattice-Boltzmann method. The hydrodynamic interactions between the polymer and solvent in a confined space with a membrane having a hole are considered explicitly through the frictional and the random forces. The electric field intensity over the space is obtained from a finite difference method. Initially, the polymer is placed at one side of the space, and an electric field is applied to drive the polymer to the other side of the space through the nano-pore. In future, we plan to study the effect of the polymer size and the electric field on the electrophoretic velocity.
Cyclic deformations of polymer foam film are simulated using the finite element method. Material of polymer foam film is polypropylene (PP). The calculated polymer foam film is micro-scale thin film has cellular structure. The polymer foam film is used in ferro-electret applications. The polymer foam film is idealized to one cell structure as lens shaped stretched truncated octahedron model. Cyclic deformation is performed by uniaxial stretching. Stretching direction is perpendicular to plane of cellular film. Various cyclic strain amplitudes, pore wall thicknesses, pore shape are investigated to find deformation tendency of cellular structure. Consequently, cellular structure has various macroscopic stresses on cyclic deformation with various pore thickness and pore shape.
