  • Particulate matter (PM) is suspended dust that has a diameter of <10 ㎛ and can be inhaled by humans and deposited in the lungs, particularly the alveoli. Recent studies have shown that PM has an adverse effect on respiratory diseases. The aim of this article is to review respiratory diseases associated with PM. According to existing studies, PM is associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchial asthma, and several other respiratory diseases and increases the mortality rates of these diseases. Moreover, increased exposure in the high concentration of atmospheric PM is associated with the development of lung cancer. The most simple and common way to protect an individual from airborne PM is to wear a face mask that filters out PM. In areas of high concentration PM, it is recommended to wear a face mask to minimize the exposure to PM. However, the use of N95 or KF94 masks can interfere with respiration in patients with chronic respiratory diseases who exhibit low pulmonary function, leading to an increased risk of respiratory failure. Conclusionally, reduction of the total amount of PM is considered to be important factor and strengthening the national warning notification system to vulnerable patients and proper early management of exacerbated patients will be needed in the future.

  • Many Internet of Things (IoT) applications involving bursty traffic have emerged recently with event detection. A power management scheme qualified for uplink bursty traffic (PM-UBT) is proposed by distinguishing between bursty and general uplink traffic patterns in the IEEE 802.11 standard to balance energy consumption and uplink latency, especially for stations with limited power and constrained buffer size. The proposed PM-UBT allows a station to transmit an uplink bursty frame immediately regardless of the state. Only when the sleep timer expires can the station send uplink general traffic and receive all downlink frames from the access point. The optimization problem (OP) for PM-UBT is power consumption minimization under a constrained buffer size at the station. This OP can be solved effectively by the bisection method, which demonstrates a performance similar to that of exhaustive search but with less computational complexity. Simulation results show that when the frame arrival rate in a station is between 5 and 100 frame/second, PM-UBT can save approximately 5 mW to 30 mW of power compared with an existing power management scheme. Therefore, the proposed power management strategy can be used efficiently for delay-intolerant uplink traffic in event-driven IoT applications, such as health status monitoring and environmental surveillance.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose management strategies to lower the level of $PM_{10}$ concentration. First, this study analyzes the characteristics of particle sizes in three different areas, the residential, the roadside, and the industrial areas. Second, it has examined the size of particles which can influence on the increase of $PM_{10}$ concentration level. The distribution of particle size for $PM_{10}$ concentration was not different by regions. The highest portion in the observed $PM_{10}$ is near $0.3{\mu}m$. In addition, both near $2.5{\mu}m$ and near $5.0{\mu}m$ are found higher in portion. The fractions of $PM_{1.0}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ in $PM_{10}$ are 68.2% and 75.8% respectively. The fraction of $PM_{1.0}$ in $PM_{2.5}$ is 89.8%. The particle diameters contributed to the increase of $PM_{10}$ concentration are different by regions. In the residential area, the sizes of near $0.6{\mu}m$ and near $3.3{\mu}m$ particles are found to be the cause for the increase of $PM_{10}$ concentration level. However the particle sizes for the increase of $PM_{10}$ concentration level are $0.8{\mu}m$ and $0.5{\mu}m$ in roadside and industrial area respectively. Therefore, fine particles are found as the key factors to raise $PM_{10}$ concentration level in the two areas, while both fine and coarse particles are in the residential areas. When examined the $PM_{10}$ concentration level change, it was categorized by two different time zones, the high concentration level time and the lower concentration time. In high concentration time, the $PM_{10}$ concentration has increased in the morning in the residential and roadside areas. On the contrary, the level has increased in the evening in the industrial area. In low concentration time, the level of $PM_{10}$ concentration in the roadside area is significantly higher in the morning than the concentration level of other times. There is no significantly different concentration level found in the both residential and industrial areas throughout the day.

  • Local meteorological conditions exert a strong influence over day-to-day variations in air pollutant concentrations. Therefore, the meteorological fluctuations have to be removed in order for air quality planners and managers to examine underlying emissions-related trends and make better air quality management decisions for future. In this study, the meteorologically adjusted $PM_{10}$ trends in Seoul are investigated over the period $1999{\sim}2006$ using Kolmogorov-Zurbenco (KZ) filter. The result indicated that meteorologicaJ variability accounts for about 25% of $PM_{10}$ variability. Both the meteorologically adjusted and unadjusted Jong-term daily $PM_{10}$ concentrations had a significant downward trends and the difference between the meteorologically adjusted and unadjusted was small. So it was assumed that in long-term daily $PM_{10}$ changes, localized changes in emissions is more important than the changes caused by meteorological conditions.
