Dimensional precision is a critical parameter in net shape processing of ferrous PM components. Sinter-hardening alloys undergo a transformation from austenite to martensite. Martensite formation expands the sintered compact, while tempering hardened steels results in shrinkage. In addition, martensitic regions with high Cu and C contents may contain large amounts of retained austenite. The presence of martensite and retained austenite, in addition to the tempering step, all play a role in the final dimensions of a component. This paper investigates the dimensional and microstructural changes to two sinter-hardening grades through different post-sintering thermal treatments.

Highly compressible Ni-Mo steels are attractive materials for PM due to high sinter density and ease of processing. Extra-fine Ni admixed PM steels have demonstrated improved mechanical properties and rolling contact fatigue resistance due to a more uniform microstructure and increased Ni diffusion during sintering. Sinter densities of single press single sinter XF Ni-Mo steels can approach $7.5\;g/cm^3$ at moderate compaction pressures. Leaner alloys based on extra-fine Ni powder are possible depending on the performance requirements of the PM steel part. Extra-fine Ni steels are particularly attractive for the growing market of high performance PM gears and sprockets.
Ti and Ti-alloys have good biocompatibility, appropriate mechanical properties and excellent corrosion resistance. However, the widely used Ti-6Al-4V is found to release toxic ions (Al and V) into the body, leading to undesirable long-term effects. Ti-6Al-4V has much higher elastic modulus (100 GPa) than cortical bone (20 GPa). Therefore, titanium alloys with low elastic modulus have been developed as biomaterials to minimize stress shielding. The electrochemical behavior of surface-modified and MC3T3-E1 cell-cultured Ti-30(Nb,Ta) alloys with low elastic modulus have been investigated using various electrochemical methods. Surfaces of test samples were treated as follows: $0.3{\mu}m$ polished; $25{\mu}m$, $50{\mu}m$ and $125{\mu}m$ sandblasted. Specimen surfaces were cultured with MC3T3-E1 cells for 2 days. Average surface roughness ($R_a$) and morphology of specimens were determined using a surface profilometer, OM, and FE-SEM. Corrosion behavior was investigated using a potentiostat(EG&G PARSTAT 2273), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was performed (10 mHz to 100 kHz) in 0.9% NaCl solution at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The microstructures of the Ti-30(Ta,Nb) alloys had a needle-like appearance. The $R_a$ of polished Ti-30Ta and Ti-30Nb alloys was lower than that of the sandblasted Ti alloy. Cultured cells displayed round shapes. For polished alloy samples, cells were well-cultured on all surfaces compared to sandblasted alloy samples. In sandblasted and cell-cultured Ti-30(Nb,Ta) alloy, the pitting potential decreased and passive current density increased as $R_a$ increased. Anodic polarization curves of cell-cultured Ti alloys showed unstable behavior in the passive region compared to non-cell-cultured alloys. From impedance tests of sandblasted and cell-cultured alloys, the polarization resistance decreased as $R_a$ increased, whereas, $R_a$ for cell-cultured Ti alloys increased compared to non-cell-cultured Ti alloys.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the level of each metal in non-precious metal alloys dental casting, still used even banned for use and trade by the law, for oral health. Methods: Two kinds of metal alloys were analyzed. One was Ticonium 100 for removable prosthesis and the other was Rexillium V for dental porcelain. Two samples of each metal alloy were made in 0.5g, 1.0g, and 1.5g. Total number of samples were 12. Two kinds of lactic acid Solution, pH7 and pH4.6, were injected into each samples. After injection, each samples had been for 21days ${\pm}$ 1 hour in the water tank of which temperature was $37^{\circ}C$. The level of metal was measured in each sample by inductively couplled plasma-atomic emission spectrometer. Results: In both metal alloys, metals, chrome, nickel, beryllium, and molybdenum, were founded. In Ticonium 1000, the highest level of nickel was 2.531ppm in 1.5g pH4.6 sample while the highest level of nickel was 4.062ppm in 1.5g pH4.6 sample of Rexillium V. In chemical composition of these methal alloys, chrome(14~17%) was much more than beryllium(1.95~1.99%) and molybdenum(5.0~9.0%) but berllium and molybdenum were founded more than chrome in samples. Therefore, chrome showed better anti-corrosion than other metal alloys. In both metal alloys, more metals were founded in higher pH level and more mass. Levels of chrome was significantly different in samples of both metal alloys in each pH level(p<0.05). Levels of nickels was significantly different in samples of both metal alloys in each pH level(p<0.05). Conclusion: For oral health, further studies are needed in nickel-chrome metal alloy and cobalt metal alloy of non-beryllium in addittion to beryllium metal alloy and also long-term studies needed in various period and other non-percious metal alloys for dental casting.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the electrochemical characteristics of nanotubular Ti-25Nb-xZr ternary alloys for dental implant materials. Materials and Methods: Ti-25Nb-xZr alloys with different Zr contents (0, 3, 7, and 15 wt.%) were manufactured using commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti), niobium (Nb), and zirconium (Zr) (99.95 wt.% purity). The alloys were prepared by arc melting in argon (Ar) atmosphere. The Ti-25Nb-xZr alloys were homogenized in Ar atmosphere at $1,000^{\circ}C$ for 12 hours followed by quenching into ice water. The microstructure of the Ti-25Nb-xZr alloys was examined by a field emission scanning electron microscope. The phases in the alloys were identified by an X-ray diffractometer. The chemical composition of the nanotube-formed surfaces was determined by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Self-organized $TiO_2$ was prepared by electrochemical oxidation of the samples in a $1.0M\;H_3PO_4+0.8wt.%$ NaF electrolyte. The anodization potential was 30 V and time was 1 hour by DC supplier. Surface wettability was evaluated for both the metallographically polished and nanotube-formed surfaces using a contact-angle goniometer. The corrosion properties of the specimens were investigated using a 0.9 wt.% aqueous solution of NaCl at $36^{\circ}C{\pm}5^{\circ}C$ using a potentiodynamic polarization test. Result: Needle-like structure of Ti-25Nb-xZr alloys was transform to equiaxed structure as Zr content increased. Nanotube formed on Ti-25Nb-xZr alloys show two sizes of nanotube structure. The diameters of the large tubes decreased and small tubes increased as Zr content increased. The lower contact angles for nanotube formed Ti-25NbxZr alloys surfaces showed compare to non-nanotube formed surface. The corrosion resistance of alloy increased as Zr content increased, and nanotube formed surface showed longer the passive regions compared to non-treatment surface. Conclusion: It is confirmed that corrosion resistance of alloy increased as Zr content increased, and nanotube formed surface has longer passive region compared to without treatment surface.

As in other areas of materials technology, the tendency towards light weight constructions becomes more and more important also for powder metallurgy. The development is mainly driven by the automotive industry looking for mass reduction of vehicles as a major factor for fuel economy. Powder metallurgy has to offer a number of interesting areas including the development of sintered materials of light metals. PM aluminium alloys with improved properties are on the way to replace ferrous pars. For high temperature applications in the engine, titanium aluminide based materials offer a great potential, e.g. for exhaust valves. The PM route using elemental powders and reactions sintering is considered to be a cost effective way for net shape parts production. Furthermore it is expected that lower costs for titanium raw materials coming from metallurgical activities will offer new chances for sintered parts with titanium alloys. The field of cellular metals expands with the hollow sphere technique, that can provide materials of many metals and alloys with a great flexibility in structure modifications. These structures are expected to be used in improving the safety (crash absoption) and noise reduction in cars in the near future and offer great potential for many other applications.
A.C. impedance properties of HA/Ti compound layer coated Ti-30Ta-($3{\sim}15$)Nb alloys have been studied by electrochemical method. Ti-30Ta binary alloys contained 3, 7, 10 and 15 wt% Nb were manufactured by the vacuum furnace system. And then specimen was homogenized at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 24 hrs. The sample was cut and polished for corrosion test and coating. It was coated with HA/Ti compound layer by magnetron sputter. The non-coated and coated morphology of Ti alloy were analyzed by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), energy X-ray dispersive spectroscopy (EDX) and filed emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). The corrosion behaviors were investigated using A.C. impedance test (PARSTAT 2273, USA) in 0.9% NaCl solution at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. Ti-30Ta-($3{\sim}15\;wt%$)Nb alloys showed the ${\alpha}+{\beta}$ phase, and $\beta$ phase peak was predominantly appeared in the case of increasingly Nb contents. The microstructures of Ti alloy were transformed from needle-like structure to equiaxed structure as Nb content increased. From the analysis of coating surface, HA/Ti composite surface uniformed coating layer with 750 nm thickness. The growth directions of film were (211), (112), (300) and (202) for HA/Ti composite coating on the surface after heat treatment at $550^{\circ}C$, whereas, the growth direction of film was (110) for Ti coating. The polarization resistance ($R_p$) of HA/Ti composite coated Ti-alloys were higher than those of the Ti and HA coated samples in 0.9% NaCl solution at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. Especially, corrosion resistance of Ti-Ta-Nb system increased as Nb content increased.
Compensation wires for Pt/Pd thermocouple was manufactured using Cu/Ni alloys. Their thermoelectric voltage has been tested from room temperature to about $150^{\circ}C$. Alloys of $Cu_{95.5}Ni_{4.5}$ and $Cu_{89.5}Ni_{10.5}$ introduced only small emf differences to Pt/Pd thermocouples, indicating a real possibility of industrial use. Above $1000^{\circ}C$, the temperature difference was expected to he small as ${\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$, and the difference would be minimized by adjusting the Ni content with a small amount.
Cp-Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloys commonly used dental implant materials, particularly for orthopaedic and osteosynthesis because of its suitable mechanical properties and excellent biocompatibility. This alloys have excellent corrosion behavior in the clinical environment. The first factor to decide the success of dental implantation is sufficient osseointegration and high corrosion resistance between on implant fixture and its surrounding bone tissue. In this study, in order to increase corrosion resistance and biocompatibility of Cp-Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloy that surface of manufactured alloy was coated with TiN by RF-magnetron sputtering method. The electrochemical behavior of TiN coated Cp-Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloy were investigated using potentiodynamic (EG&G Co, PARSTAT 2273. USA) and potentiostatic test (250mV) in 0.9% NaCl solution at 36.5 $\pm$ 1$^{\circ}C$. These results are as follows : 1. From the microstructure analysis, Cp-Ti showed the acicular structure of $\alpha$-phase and Ti-6Al-4V showed the micro-acicular structure of ${\alpha}+{\beta}$ phase. 2. From the potentiodynamic test, Ecorr value of Cp-Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloys showed -702.48mV and -319.87mV, respectively. Ti-6Al-4V alloy value was higher than Cp-Ti alloy. 3. From the analysis of TiN and coated layer, TIN coated surface showed columnar structure with 800 nm thickness. 4. The corrosion resistance of TiN coated Cp-Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloys were higher than those of the non-coated Ti alloys in 0.9% NaCl solution from potentiodynamic test, indicating better protective effect. 5. The passivation current density of TiN coated Cp-Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloys were smaller than that of the noncoated implant fixture in 0.9% NaCl solution, indicating the good protective effect resulting from more compact and homogeneous layer formation.
Pure titanium and its alloys are drastically used in implant materials due to their excellent mechanical properties, high corrosion resistance and good biocompatibility. However, the widely used Ti-6Al-4V is found to release toxic ions (Al and V) into the body, leading to undesirable long-term effects. Ti-6Al-4V has much higher elastic modulus than cortical bone. Therefore, titanium alloys with low elastic modulus have been developed as biomaterials to minimize stress shielding. For this reason, Ti-30Ta-xZr alloy systems have been studied in this study. The Ti-30Ta containing Zr(5, 10 and 15 wt%) were 10 times melted to improve chemical homogeneity by using a vacuum furnace and then homogenized for 24 hrs at $1000^{\circ}C$. The specimens were cut and polished for corrosion test and Ti coating and then coated with TiN, respectively, by using DC magnetron sputtering method. The analyses of coated surface were carried out by field emission scanning electron microscope(FE-SEM). The electrochemical characteristics were examined using potentiodynamic (- 1500 mV~+ 2000 mV) and AC impedance spectroscopy(100 kHz~10 mHz) in 0.9% NaCl solution at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The equiaxed structure was changed to needle-like structure with increasing Zr content. The surface defects and structures were covered with TiN/Ti coated layer. From the polarization behavior in 0.9% NaCl solution, The corrosion current density of Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys decreased as Zr content increased, whereas, the corrosion potential of Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys increased as Zr content increased. The corrosion resistance of TiN/Ti-coated Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys were higher than that of the TiN-coated Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys. From the AC impedance in 0.9% NaCl solution, polarization resistance($R_p$) value of TiN/Ti coated Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys showed higher than that of TiN-coated Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys.
