  • Principal component analysis, factor analysis and cluster analysis have been performed to analyze the relationship between air pollutants and meteorological variables measured in 1999 in Seoul. In principal analysis, the first principal has been shown the contrast effect between $O_3$ and the other pollutants, the second principal has been shown the contrast effect between CO, $SO_2$, $NO_2$ and $O_3$, PM10, TSP. In factor analysis, the first factor has been found as PM10, TSP, $NO_2$ concentrations which are related with suspended particulates. As a result of cluster analysis, three clusters respectively have represented different air pollution levels, seasonal characteristics of air pollutants and meteorological situations.

  • This study was aimed to investigate the influence on the vicinity by air pollutant generated from facility of the district heating located in local small town. We selected the seven areas arround the surroundings of facility of the district heating, compared the air quality evaluated before and after operations of the facility, and estimated the diffusion of air pollutant exhausted from the facility using a ISC model. The result was that the concentration of TSP before and after operations of the facility was 89${\sim}$94${\mu}$g/m$^3$,and 72${\sim}$81${\mu}$g/m$^3$, respectively and the latter showed a decline in concentration. Also, there was no relationship between straight distance from the facility of the district heating and the concentration of TSP. This result was applicable to cases of PM-10 and SO$_2$. We also investigated the influence on the air around the neighbored area by air pollutant produced from facility of the district heating using ISCLT3 model. The adding-concentrations of TSP, SO$_2$,NO$_2$, and CO were 0.0019${\sim}$0.00183${\mu}$g/m$^3$, 0.0029${\sim}$0.5648ppb, 0.2924${\sim}$l.9837ppb,and 0.0087${\sim}$0.0590ppb, respectively. It is predicted that each concentration is added to pollutant exhausted from facility of the district heating and is about 1/100${\sim}$1/180,000 of present air quality. This has a tiny influence on general air quality. According to this analysis, the concentration of air pollutant is less effected to pollutants expected by the facility of the district heating than other pollutants emitted from mobil source or industrial complex, and etc.

  • The mineralogy and mixing state were investigated by the high resolution scanning electron microscopy combined with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis on particles of the total suspended solid (TSP) samples collected during the Asian dust event, spring, 2009. Relatively large particles were dominated by quartz, plagioclase, K-feldspar, amphibole, biotite, muscovite, chlorite, and calcite. Clay minerals usually occur as thin coatings on the coarse minerals or as aggregates. Calcite nanofibers are often admixed with clay platelets in the clay coatings and aggregates. Dust particles were classified on the basis of their main minerals. The single-particle mineralogy and mixing state of the TSP sample are consistent with those of $PM_{10}$ samples in previous studies.

  • Size-segregated mass and ion concentrations of atmospheric aerosols in Cheonan City were measured using a high volume air sampler equipped with a 5-stage cascade impactor and a ion chromatography between March 2006 and April 2007. The mean values of 24-hr average concentrations of TSP, PM10, PM2.5, and PM1 were 61.7, 55.2, 43.7, $33.2{\mu}g/m^3$, respectively. Mass size distributions of atmospheric aerosols were bimodal distributions with a saddle point in $1.5\;{\sim}\;3.0{\mu}m$ range in diameter separating coarse and fine particle modes. Fine particles, PM2.5 were 70.8% of the total mass of aerosols. Major ion components in aerosols were ${NH_{4}}^+$, $Na^+$, $K^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$ for cations, and ${SO_{4}}^{2-}$, ${NO_{3}}^-$, $Cl^-$ for anions. ion components occupied 37.4% of coarse particles and 46.2% of fine particles in mass.

  • The literature data of the mass concentrations of TSP, $PM_{10}$, and $PM_{2.5}$, and chemical composition of $PM_{2.5}$ (sulfate, nitrate, ammonium, OC, and EC) from 1985 and 2013 at Seoul were collected and the temporal trends were discussed in relation with the policy directions. Generally, the mass concentrations of TSP, $PM_{10}$, and $PM_{2.5}$ at Seoul have showed decreasing trends. However, it is not clear what might be the major reason(s) for the trends. The concentrations of ionic component in $PM_{2.5}$ showed different trends, sulfate being reduced during the 1990s but no trend during the 2000s. The concentrations of nitrate and ammonium were increasing during the 2000s. The concentrations of OC show no apparent trend while that of EC decreased. Further policy directions are suggested based on the temporal trends of the chemical composition in $PM_{2.5}$.

  • It is necessary to examine the source contributions and the relationship between a receptor and sources for the resonable controlling of air pollution level of suspended particulate matters. Therefore, in this study, profiles of sources contributing to the concentration of suspended particulate matters, were developed and CMB model was applied to obtain information of source contributions and feasibility of CMB model application. According to the propose of this study, twenty-seven chemical species such as the elements, anions, and total carbon of thirty-six PMl0 and TSP data sets sampled at the Pomch'on receptor site in Pusan for a 24-hr period from May to Aug. 1992, were analyzed and three (transportation, soil, marine) different source profiles were developed through the field measurement. Applying CMB model to transportation, soil, marine, the results of source contribution by CMB model showed that the case with TSP was more suitable for CMB model than that with PMl0. And the average contribution of transportation source to TSP and PMlo concentration at Pomch'on receptor was calculated as 90.66 ㎍/m3(64%) and 23.27 ㎍/m3(39%), resfiectively, which showed that the contribution by transportation was dominant. The validation of CMB model was performed by means of the results of contributions from marine source for the wind direction sectors.

  • The real-time monitoring of radon ($^{222}Rn$) concentrations has been carried out to evaluate its ambient background concentration levels in Gosan site, Jeju Island between January 2001 and December 2004. In addition, the atmospheric TSP aerosols have been sampled, and their ionic and metallic components were analyzed to understand the characteristics of air pollution. The mean concentration of radon was $3,121{\pm}1,627\;mBq/m^3$, and the seasonal mean concentrations for spring, summer, fall and winter seasons were 2,898, 2,398, 3,571 and $3,646\;mBq/m^3$, respectively, The hourly concentrations have shown the highest value at 7 a.m. and the lowest value at 2 p.m. From the backward trajectory analyses, the radon concentrations have increased, when the air parcels were moved from the Chinese continent to Jeju area. On the other hand, they have decreased, when the air parcels from the North Pacific Ocean. In the analytical results of ionic species and metal elements of TSP aerosols, the concentrations of $nss-{SO_4}^{2-}$ and S were higher in June and March. Meanwhile, the concentrations of other anthropogenic species as well as soil components were mostly higher in March and April. On the basis of factor analysis, the TSP aerosols at Gosan area were largely influenced by soil sources, followed by anthropogenic sources and marine sources. From the result of backward trajectory analyses, the concentrations of $nss-{SO_4}^{2-},\;{NO_3}^-$, Al and Ca were mostly higher, when the air parcels moved from Chinese continent to Jeju area. On the other hand, their concentrations were lower, when the air parcels drifted from the North Pacific Ocean.

  • Severe haze, mist, and fog phenomena occurred in the central part of Korea during 15~25 May 2003 resulted in poor visibility and air quality. When these phenomena occurred, Korean peninsula was under the effects of anticyclone. The atmosphere was stable, and wind speed was so weak. Under this meteorological conditions, air quality was worse and worse. The characteristics of aerosol in Seoul, Incheon, and Gosan (Jeju) during this period are investigated from the $PM_{10}$. TSP concentrations and aerosol number concentrations. Concentrations of $PM_{10}$ and TSP measured at KMA increased upto 176 and 230 J.${\mu}g/m^3$ on 22 May 2003, respectively. Aerosol number concentrations of size range from 0.82 to 6.06 ${\mu}m$ increased in Seoul on 17, 19, and 21~24 May 2003, and the concentrations of $NO_2$ and $SO_2$had maximum value of 0.165 ppm at Gwanak Mt. and 0.036 ppm at Guro-dong on 23 May 2003, respectively. Result from analysis on heavy metal elements showed high concentrations of Zn, Pb, Cr, Ni, Cu, and Cd during 20~24 May 2003. This event is examined by comprehensive analyses of synoptic weather conditions, satellite images, concentrations of suspended particles and air pollutants, and heavy metal elements.

  • In swine house, dust generation comes from various sources and is known to be harmful both for the animals and the farmers because the dust contains biological and gaseous matters. When farmers are constantly exposed to the dusts, they can suffer chronic or acute respiratory symptoms and have high probability of manifesting various diseases. To address this problem, understanding of the mechanism of dust generation is very important. In this paper, the dust concentration of inhalable, respirable, TSP and $PM_{10}$ were monitored and analyzed according to the pig-activity level, ventilation quantity and feeding method in fattening pig house. From the measured results, in case of the concentration of TSP, an inverse-linear relation with ventilation rate ($R^2=0.88$) and linear relation with the installation height of feed supply pipe ($R^2=0.73$) were determined. However in case of the concentration of $PM_{10}$, no particular relationship with the variables was observed. Using the concentration of inhalable and respirable dust based on the pig-activity level, multi-variate regression analysis was conducted and results have shown that the movement of pigs can contribute to the dust generation (p<0.05, $R^2=0.71$, 0.61). The relationship determined between dust generation and environmental variables investigated in this study is very significant and useful in conducting dust-reduction researches.

  • In East Asia, the long-range transport of dust storms originating from Mongolia and northern China affects airborne dust loadings over downwind areas in the southern Korean Peninsula. Since 1997, dust loading cases caused by dust storms have been observed using the thresholds of total suspended particles (TSP, ${\geq}250{\mu}g\;m^{-3}\;hr^{-1}$) and particulate matter less than $10{\mu}g$ ($PM_{10}$, ${\geq}190{\mu}g\;m^{-3}\;hr^{-1}$) in the central-southern Korean Peninsula. There were two dust loading cases that exceeded these thresholds in 2016 and three in 2017, which reflects the downward trend of the last twenty-one years in the central-southern Korean Peninsula. Furthermore, five other dust loading cases with mass concentrations lower than the thresholds were observed from 2016 to 2017. In the moderate dust loading cases exceeding the thresholds, a descending motion of cut-off lows below $45^{\circ}N$ and a southward trough at 500 hPa gpm isopleths intensified at the western ridge, and largely extended the surface high-pressure system over southeast China. Airborne dust loadings following pronounced north-westerlies in the forward side of the high-pressure system were transported to the surface of the central-southern Korean Peninsula. However, in slight dust loading cases lower than the thresholds, the restricted descending motion of cut-off lows over $45^{\circ}N$ and the southwestward trough at 500 hPa gpm isopleths intensified the zonal flow over the Korean Peninsula. Surface high- and low-pressure systems moved eastward from the source compared to moderate dust loading cases. Due to the zonal movement of dust storms traversing eastern China, slight dust loading cases were observed with relatively higher ratios of $PM_{2.5}/TSP$ and carbon monoxide (CO) in the central-southern Korean Peninsula.
