In order to study the scavenging mechanism as a final goal, the characteristics of chemical components in the rain water were examined as a function of the amount of rainfall. The rain drops were collected sequentially with a rainfall interval amount of each 0.1 .sim. 0.5 mm from the beginning of rain. Rain water was separated into the soluble and insoluble components and the concentrations of 15 elements in both components were determined by the PIXE analysis. The elemental cencentrations decreased quickly till about 0.3 .sim. 0.5 mm of rainfall was obtained and then decreased gradually afterward. Fe, Ti, and Si in the aerosol particles caught in rain water were in high insoluble state. In contrast, almost whole of S and Cl were dissolved in rain water.

The objective of this study was to estimate the $PM_{2.5}$ source apportionment at the Pinnacles National Monument IMPROVE site in western coastal USA. The PMF was applied to identify the existing sources and apportion the $PM_{2.5}$ mass to each source. To analyze local source impacts from various wind directions, the NPR analysis was performed using source contribution results with the wind direction values measured at the site. Also, PSCF was applied to identify the locations by point sources relative to the back trajectories. A total of 1,634 samples were collected from March 1988 to May 2004 by IMPROVE sampler and 32 chemical species were analyzed by PIXE, PESA, XRF, IC, and TOR methods. The PMF modeling identified seven sources and the average mass was apportioned to gasoline vehicle, secondary sulfate, aged sea salt, secondary nitrate, wood/field burning, diesel emission, and soil, respectively. In this study, the average mass was apportioned to gasoline vehicle (33.0%), secondary sulfate (25.7%), aged sea salt (17.8%), and secondary nitrate (10.1%). Also, this study suggests the possible role for source apportionment study of $PM_{2.5}$ at similar areas such as wildness, national park, and coastal areas in Korea.
In order to fully understand the chemical properties of Asian dust particles, especially their transformation and aging processes, it is desirable to investigate the nature of original sands collected at local source areas in China. This study presents the detailed properties of sands collected at four different desert regions (Yinchuan, Wuwei, Dulan, and Yanchi) in China. Most of sands have irregular shape with yellowish coloration, whereas some of them show peculiar colors. The relative size distribution of sands collected at Yinchuan, Wuwei, and Dulan deserts exhibits monomodal with the maximum level between 200 and $300{\mu}$, whereas that of Yanchi desert is formed between 100 and $200{\mu}$. The mass concentration ratio of each element to that of Si (Z/Si) determined by PIXE analysis has a tendency towards higher Z/Si ratios for soil derived elements. It was possible to visually reconstruct the elemental maps on the surface of individual sands by XRF microprobe technique. In addition, the multielemental mass concentration could be quantitatively calculated for numerous spots of desert sands.
The new amorphous intermetallic compounds, M3(AsTe3)2: M=Cr, Co, Fe, were synthesized by the precipitation reaction of the Zintl anion AsTe33- with the divalent transition metal halides in aqueous solution and analyzed by EDS equipped with SEM and PIXE. The empirical formula of the specimens was found to be Fe3.0As1.8Te5.9, Co3.0As2.1Te6.5, and Cr3.0As2.0Te6.9 by the quantitative elemental analysis. The dc specific resistivity of the materials was measured as a function of temperature in the range from 20 to 300 K, in which their resistivity of Cr3(AsTe3)2 was largely dependent on temperature, while those of Co3(AsTe3)2 and Fe3(AsTe3)2 were only slightly dependent on temperature. To characterize the spin glass state of the specimens, the ac and dc magnetic susceptibility were measured and it was found that Co3(AsTe3)2 and Fe3(AsTe3)2 undergo a transition to a spin glass state at 6 K and 38 K, respectively. Magnetization data are reported as both thermal remanent magnetization (TRM) and isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM) as a function of magnetizing field and temperature.
Intensive measurements of airborne respirable $PM_{2.5}$ and inhalable $PM_{2.5}$ were conducted in the downtown area of Iksan city. The $PM_{2.5}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ samples were collected twice a day in the Iksan city of Korea from October 17 to November 1, 2004. The purpose of the study was to determine the inorganic water-soluble components and trace elements of $PM_{2.5}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ in the atmospheric environment and estimate the contribution rate of major chemical components from a mass balance of all measured particulate species. The chemical analysis for PM samples was conducted for water-soluble inorganic ions using ion chromatography and trace elements using PIXE analysis. The mean concentrations of respirable $PM_{2.5}$ and inhalable $PM_{2.5}$ were $51.4{\pm}29.7$ and $79.5{\pm}39.6\;{\mu}g/m^3$, respectively, and the ratio was 0.62. The ion species of $NO_3$, $SO_4^2$, and $NH_4^+$ were abundant in both $PM_{2.5}$ and $PM_{2.5}$. These components predominated in respirable $PM_{2.5}$ fraction, while $Na^+$, $Mg^{2+}$, $Ca^{2+}$ mostly existed in coarse particle mode. Elemental components of S, Cl, K, and Si were abundant in both $PM_{2.5}$ and $PM_{2.5}$. These elements, except for Si, were considered to be emitted from anthropogenic sources, while Si, Al, Fe, Ca existed mainly in coarse particle mode and were considered to be emitted from crustal materials. The averaged mass balance analysis showed that ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulfate, crustal component, and other trace elements were composed of 18.4%, 13.2%, 4.8%, 3.5% for PM2.5 and 17.0%, 11.6%, 13.7%, 4.4% for $PM_{2.5}$, respectively.
The present study examines the phosphate adsorption potential and behavior of mixture of Ground Burnt Patties (GBP), a solid waste generated from cooking fuel used in earthen stoves and Red Soil (RS), a natural substance in fixed bed column mode operation. The characterization of adsorbent was done by Proton Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE), and Proton Induced ${\gamma}$-ray Emission (PIGE) methods. The FTIR spectroscopy of spent adsorbent reveals the presence of absorbance peak at $1127cm^{-1}$ which appears due to P = O stretching, thus confirming phosphate adsorption. The effects of bed height (10, 15 and 20 cm), flow rate (2.5, 5 and 7.5 mL/min) and initial phosphate concentration (5 and 15 mg/L) on breakthrough curves were explored. Both the breakthrough and exhaustion time increased with increase in bed depth, decrease in flow rate and influent concentration. Thomas model, Yoon-Nelson model and Modified Dose Response model were used to fit the column adsorption data using nonlinear regression analysis while Bed Depth Service Time model followed linear regression analysis under different experimental condition to evaluate model parameters that are useful in scale up of the process. The values of correlation coefficient ($R^2$) and the Sum of Square Error (SSE) revealed the Modified Dose Response model as the best fitted model to the experimental data. The adsorbent mixture responded effectively to the desorption and reusability experiment. The results of this finding advocated that mixture of GBP and RS can be used as a low cost, highly efficient adsorbent for phosphate removal from aqueous solution.
In order to clarify the thermal and hygroscopic properties of indoor particulate matter (PM) in a semiclosed subway space, which is critically important for understanding of the distinctive particle formation processes as well as the assessment of their health effects, the size-resolved PMs (i.e., $PM_{2.5}$ and $PM_{10-2.5}$) were intensively collected on the platform of Miasageori station on the Seoul Subway Line-4. The elemental concentrations in soluble and insoluble fractions were determined by PIXE from the bulkily pretreated $PM_{2.5}$. The thermal and hygroscopic characteristics of individual particles were investigated via a combination of the unique pretreatment techniques (i.e., the high-temperature rapid thermal process and the water dialysis) and SEM-EDX analysis. Iron and calcium were unequaled in insoluble and soluble $PM_{2.5}$ fractions, respectively, with overwhelming concentration. The SEM-EDX's elemental net-counts for the pre- and post-pyrolyzed PMs newly suggest that magnesium and several elements (i.e., silica, aluminum, and calcium) may be readily involved in the newly generated subway fine PM by a high-temperature thermal processing when trains are breaking and starting. Through the water dialysis technique, it turned out that calcium has meaningful amount of water soluble fraction. Furthermore, the concentrations of the counter-ions associated with the calcium in subway $PM_{10-2.5}$ were theoretically estimated.
