  • The sediments and soils around a mine are likely to be exposed to contamination of arsenic (As) through mining operations. In this study, the factors associated with As movement in soils around a closed zinc (Zn) mine were evaluated by the relationship of As distributions to physico-chemical properties of soils. A sequential extraction scheme, based on a soil P fractionation, was used to assess the As distributionsin solid phases. A significant difference in As distributions was found between paddy and upland soils. While As contents of paddy soils increased with soil depth, those of upland soils decreased with soil depth. In upland soils, As showed additional significant relationships to oxides of Si, Al and Fe. Although a major fraction of As in soils was found to be in the NaOH extractable fraction, As exhibited highly significant relationship to the Zn species that apparently originated from the mine. Therefore, As mobility around Zn mine seems to be governed by mass flow of the particulates containing As-associated Zn in paddy soils, whereas retention reactions such as adsorption, complexation, and precipitation seem to predominate in upland soils.

  • The investigations were conducted to improve the physical properties by analyzing physico-chemical properties on the different soil families of textures at 20 upland fields located in the parts of Gyengsangbuk-do area. Soil physico-chemical properties were analyzed for bulk density, hardness, porosity, moisture, pH, EC and organic mater by soil depth on the different soil families of textures. Bulk density distributions were higher than 1.2 Mg $m^{-3}$ in the optimum range. Hardness distributions were lower than 20 mm in the optimum range. Therefore, the physical properties of upland soil was deteriorated. Correlation coefficient of bulk density with hardness and organic mater were higher significantly, that was positive and negative, respectively. The soil hardness had the greatest distribution degree to the crop yield and bulk density and organic matter followed. Conclusively, To improve the physical properties of upland soil was more effective to fertilizing organic matter than other ways.

  • The rice quality related traits including physico-chemical traits were evaluated with one hundred sixty-four MG RILs derived from the cross between Milyang 23, Indica/Japonica hybrid type, and Gihobyeo, Japonica type. The variation distribution of all traits examined approximately fit normal distribution and transgressive segregants over parents were observed for all traits. The occurrence of such transgression could be associated with the interactions of complementary QTL alleles from two parents. However in this study, it could not be concluded that our results of segregation were due to either complementary gene effects or overdominance of a major gene. These factors should be verified by further studies. Correlations between traits were evaluated by regressing phenotypic values of one trait on those of another traits. There are highly significant correlation between grain thickness with grain width, white core and white belly. But between white belly and alkali digestion value showed highly negative significant correlation. Contents of protein showed highly negative correlation with amylose and Mg/K ratio but showed highly correlation with K and Fat contents. Hardness of cooked rice showed highly correlation with adhesiveness, elasticity, gumminess, chewiness.

  • This study investigated the physio-chemical water quality and the standing crop of the phytoplankton of Dong-stream in Jeollanam-do from May 2010 to Feb 2011. The indicators and the dominant species of phytoplankton were also measured to investigate the water quality of estuary. Nutrients turned out to be eutrophic to hypertrophic in most sites with total nitrogen ranging 1.023~10.743 mg/L and total phosphorous ranging 0.0182~1.6848 mg/L. The site D6 had the highest BOD ranging 0.6~7.5 mg/L. Total of 205 taxa appeared within the research period, Bacillariophyceae being the highest number of taxa. The appeared species were taxa resistant to pollution including Navicula pupula, N. subminuscula, Nitzschia amphibia and N. palea. The downstream is thought to be greatly affected by the ocean water since marine and estuary phytoplankton such as Skeletonema costatum, Coscinodiscus radiatus, Bacteriastrum delicatulum and Eucampia biconcave appeared. Diatom appeared mainly as dominant species including Cymbella minuta, Melosira varians, Gomphonema parvulum, Stephanodiscus hantzschii. As for Stephanodiscus hantzschii, it dominates during fall and winter when the water temperature drops. Diatom showed 50% or higher dominant rate in all seasons at most sites. Most sites turned out to be eutrophic based on the standing crop of cells and chlorophyll a concentration. Total of 15 polluted water indicating taxa including Oscillatoria limosa appeared. From this result, the Dong-stream was considered to be in the eutrophication.

  • The rock units of Goesan area in the Ogcheon metamor phic terrain established on the basis of field criteria should be redefined into following sequence. Based on shear senses in secondary small structures which are usually observable in the investigated area, the stratigraphy can be lithologically divided into the lower pelite, pebbly mudstone, upper pelite, quartzite and psammite unit in ascending order. This conclusion is in discordance with a previous opinion; Munjuri formation and Guryongsan formation may be equivalent to upper pelite unit, Iwonri formation and Hwanggangri formation to pebbly mudstone. From this, it may be inferred that isoclinal overturned folds repeatly occur in the area. The uranium bearing coaly thin layers in upper pelite unit have relatively broad exposures in Deogpyeongri block of Goesan area along culmination zone in the central part of the investigated area. It is believed that structural feature in the block recognized complexly refolded synform plunging to southwest. Mineralogical and radiometric studies were made on 135 representative samples from the Ogcheon Group of Korea. The mineralogy of all black slate samples is qualitatively similar but quantitatively ·different. The uranium distribution in the studied area show approximately log normal. Uranium in the black slates of the Ogcheon Group was deposited together under same physico-chemical environmental conditions. The chemical and geological factors that controlled the abundance of organic carbon and iron oxides also controlled the uranium content. The relationship of the major components to uranium can be expressed by the following regression equation: $Log(U\times10^4+1)$= 1.70999-0.00367(quartz)0.00512(micas)-0.00930 (other silicates)+0.01911 (iron oxides)-0.03389(other opaques)+0.02062(organic carbon).

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of the topographical factors (16 items), physico-chemical properties of soil (13 items) and meteorological factors(9 items) on the height growth of Pinus thunbergii stands along the coastal area in Korea. According to the coefficients by partial correlation analysis in total area, it was found that tree height growth was considerably affected by local topography, soil hardness, soil B-horizental depth, effective soil depth, soil moisture, parent rock, soil texture, and etc.. And the soil factors were available $P_2O_5$, total nitrogen, base saturation, exchangeable $Ca^{{+}+}$, and etc.. In partial correlation analysis, annual relative humidity, annual precipitation, index of aridity, and etc. were found to be the most important factors influencing on tree height growth of Pinus thunbergii stands. In conlusion, the topographical, soil and meteorological factors have multiplex influence on the tree height growth in the Pinus thunbergii stands. They promise to provide the basis of improving not only the selection of suitable sites and the management of soil fertilizer but also the estimation of growth and yield. Hence these results would be used successfully for the design in the scientific forest working plan.

  • A series of experiments were conducted to develop standard test organisms and test protocols for measuring sediment toxicity using candidate amphipods such as Mandibulophoxus mai, Monocorophium acherusicum, Haustorioides indivisus, and Haustorioides koreanus, which are indigenous to Korea. The relevant association of test species with sediment substrates was one of the important factors in sediment bioassay. The indigenous amphipods M mai and M. acherusicum were well associated with test sediments when they were exposed to various sediment substrates from sand to mud. The tolerant limits to various physico-chemical factors affecting bioassay results such as temperature, salinity and ammonia, as well as sensitivities to reference toxicant and contaminated sediments, were investigated using M. mai and M. acherusicum in the present study. These amphipods were tolerant to relatively wide ranges of salinity $(10{\sim}30\;psu)$ and ammonia (<50 ppm), and displayed relevant sensitivity to temperature as well. They are more sensitive to Cd, the reference toxicant, when compared to the standard test species used in other countries. Field-sediment toxicity tests revealed that M. mai would be more sensitive to sediment-associated pollutants than M. acherusicum, while the sensitivity of M. acherusicum was comparable to that of Leptocheirus plumulosus, which has been used as a standard test species in the United States of America. Overall results of this first attempt to develop an amphipod sediment toxicity test protocol in Korea indicated that M. mai and M. acherusicum would be applicable in the toxicity assessment of contaminated sediments, following the further evaluation encompassing various ecological and toxicological studies in addition to test method standardization.

  • Spatial and temporal variations of environmental factors and phytoplankton community were investigated in the three stations of Andong Reservoir in 1997 and 2003. The changes of physico-chemical water quality and phytoplanktonic biomass were higher in 2003 than that of 1997, due to rainfall difference. The concentration of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) in the reservoir decreased, but total nitrogen fell relatively more between them. TN/TP ratio decreased from 109 to 90 showing no change at the downstream but a big decrease at the midand upstream. Predominant phylum of phytoplankton in Andong Reservoir were six genus that composed to Anabaena, Aphanizomenon and Microcystis of Cyanophyceae, Cosmarium and Scenedesmus of Chlorophyceae and Synedra of Bacillariophyceae, respectively. Among the observed phytoplankton, diatom Synedra occured as the maximum amount of 3,400 cells mL$^{-1}$ even at the above 30°C. Green algae Scenedesmus observed along with Microcystis. It seemed to be compete with Microcystis during the high water temperature period. Although trophic state of Andong Reservoir was decreased, the standing crops of phytoplankton were increased. Moreover bluegreen algae, Aphanizomenon and Microcystis in the region of upstream to midstream and diatom, Synedra in the region of midstream to downstream were increased until to reach the algal bloom, respectively. It seemed necessary to attention the changes of blue-green algae Aphanizomenon, that has an ability of nitrogen fixation.
