AAO를 사용한 고분자전해질 연료전지의 공기극 촉매층 구조 제어 (Morphology Controlled Cathode Catalyst Layer with AAO Template in Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells)

  • 고분자전해질 연료전지 (PEMFC)의 공기극을 양극산화 알루미늄 (AAO) 템플레이트를 이용하여 제조하고 촉매층의 구조적 특성을 주사현미경 (SEM) 측정과 BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) 분석을 통해 알아보았다. SEM 측정을 통해 일정한 크기와 모양의 Pt nanowire 가 규칙적으로 형성된 것을 확인할 수 있었다. BET 분석을 통해 AAO 템플레이트로 인하여 20-100 nm 크기의 기공 분포가 증가한 것을 확인하였다. 단위전지 성능평가와 임피던스 측정을 통하여 막-전극접합체 (MEA)의 전기화학적 특성을 분석하였다. 그 결과, AAO 템플레이트를 이용하여 제조한 MEA는 촉매층의 구조 개선으로 인하여 물질 전달 저항을 감소시킬 수 있었으며, 25%의 단위전지 성능이 향상되었다.

  • Efforts are being made to replace ship diesel engines with electric propulsion motors in response to emission regulations. In particular, in the case of short-range small ships, research is being conducted to replace polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) with power sources. However, PEMFC has problems such as slow dynamic response characteristics and reduced durability at high temperatures. To solve this problem, a high-precision ship model was developed with power distribution and thermal management strategies applied, and through this, the required power, heat, and power characteristics of the propulsion system according to the ship's speed profile were analyzed.

  • Water management has been recognized as a crucial factor for achieving better performance and stability in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Proper water management should provide favorable water conditions, including the local humidity, membrane water content, and liquid water saturation in PEMFCs, thereby leading to more uniform electrochemical reaction and current generation. In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation was conducted to investigate the effects of the cathode relative humidity (RH) on the performance of a 3 by $3\;cm^2$ PEMFC with serpentine flow fields. The CFD results showed that the best performance of the PEMFC was obtained for the cathode RH of 80%, but the performance variation was small for the cathode RH range of $60{\sim}100%$. However, the loss of the PEMFC performance was significant when the cathode RH was reduced below 40%. The reason for such performance variation was investigated through the detailed inspection of ohmic loss, activation and concentration overpotential, and water and current distributions.

  • 고분자전해질 연료전지로 물을 전기분해하여 수소와 산소를 발생시킬 수 있다. 그러나 1.7V 이상의 높은 전압에서 수전해 반응이 일어나므로 전극과 고분자 전해질 막의 열화가 빠르게 진행된다. 수전해 과정에서 anode의 열화를 방지하기 위해 촉매로 지지체 없는 $IrO_2$를 보통 사용하는데 본 연구에서는 고분자전해질 연료전지용 Pt/C 촉매를 수전해 반응에 그대로 사용했을 때 전극과 막의 열화 현상을 분석하였다. 1.8~2.0 V 전압 범위에서 수전해 반응 후 고분자 전해질 연료전지 구동 조건에서 I-V, CV, 임피던스, LSV를 측정했다. 수전해 전압이 높을수록 전극과 막의 열화 속도가 증가하였다. 2.0 V에서 1분 동안 수전해 반응했을 때 수소 수율은 88%였고, 전극과 고분자 막이 열화되어 0.6 V에서 성능이 49% 감소하였다.

  • Air-breathing polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) are highly promising particularly for small-power applications up to tens watts class. A distinctive feature of the air-breathing PEMFC is its simple system configuration in which axial fans operate for dual purposes, supplying both oxidant and coolant in a single manner. In the present study, a nominal 80W air-breathing PEMFC system is developed and investigated to determine the optimal operating strategy through parametric studies (i.e., reactant humidity, and fanblowing flow rate). The cell voltage distributions are examined as a function of time to evaluate the system performance under various operating conditions.

  • 고분자전해질 연료전지에서 전해질막의 물이동과 함수율은 고분자막의 성능에 많은 영향을 미친다. 본 연구에서는 간단한 방법에 의해 물이동에 관한 고분자막의 물성(전기삼투계수, 물 확산계수)을 측정하고 이들을 이용해 막을 통한 물의 이동량과 이온전도도를 모델식에 의해 모사한 후 실험값과 비교하였다. 물이동의 구동력은 전기삼투와 확산만이 라고 본 1차원 정상상태 지배방정식을 매트랩으로 수치해석하였다. $144{\mu}m$ 두께의 고분자막의 전기삼투계수를 수소펌핑셀에서 구한 결과 1.11을 얻었다. 물확산계수를 상대습도의 함수로 나타냈고 물확산에 대한 활성화에너지는 $2,889kJ/mol{\cdot}K$였다. 이들 계수를 적용해 모사한 물이동량과 이온전도도 결과는 실험값과 잘 일치함을 보였다.

고분자 전해질 연료전지 금속 분리판용 금속의 염화물 농도에 따른 전기화학적 특성 연구 (Investigation on Electrochemical Characteristics of Metallic Bipolar Plates with Chloride Concentrations for PEMFC)

  • Currently, the demand for eco-friendly energy sources is high, which has prompted research on polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. Both aluminum alloys and nickel alloys, which are commonly considered as materials of bipolar plates in fuel cells, oxide layers formed on the metal surface have excellent corrosion resistance. In this research, the electrochemical characteristics of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy and Inconel 600 were investigated with chloride concentrations in an acid environment that simulated the cathode condition of the PEMFC. After potentiodynamic polarization experiments, Tafel analysis and surface analysis were performed. Inconel 600 presented remarkably good corrosion resistance under all test conditions. The corrosion current density of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy was significantly higher than that of Inconel 600 under all test conditions. Also, 6061-T6 aluminum alloy and Inconel 600 presented uniform corrosion and intergranular corrosion, respectively. The Ni, Cr, and Fe, which are the main chemical compositions of Inconel 600, are higher than Al in the electromotive force series. And a double oxide film of NiO-Cr2O3, which is more stable than Al2O3, is formed. Thus, the corrosion resistance of Inconel 600 is better.

  • Water management is crucial for the performance, durability, and stability of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs). Due to its importance, various methods for visualizing PEMFC's internal water distribution have been adapted to study and manage water within the cells. However, these methods often require large facilities, leading to high costs and significant barriers to entry. This study addresses these challenges by using a commercial Radiation (X-ray) Generator (RG) for internal water distribution visualization and comparing the results with synchrotron X-ray data from the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL) 9D beamline. Despite the lower resolution and potential beam distortion challenges, the RG shows promise for PEMFC water distribution visualization, suggesting the need for further research to refine water attenuation coefficients and build-up factors for improved measurement accuracy.

Improved Reduction of Carbon Monoxide by Highly Efficient Catalytic Shift for Fuel Cell Applications

  • The generation of high purity hydrogen from reformed hydrocarbon fuels, or syngas, is essential for efficient operation of the fuel cell (PEMFC, Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell). Usually, major components of reformed gas are $H_2$, CO, $CO_2$ and $H_2O$. Especially a major component, CO poisons the electrode of fuel cells. The water gas shifter (WGS) that shifts CO to $CO_2$ and simultaneously produces $H_2$, was developed to a two stage catalytic conversion process involving a high temperature shifter (HTS) and a low temperature shifter (LTS). Also, experiments were carried out to reduce the carbon monoxide up to $3{\sim}4%$ in the HTS and lower than 5,000 ppm via the LTS.

  • Hydrogen generation system using aqueous $NaBH_4$ solution was developed for feeding small polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Ru was selected as a catalyst with its high activity for the hydrogen generation reaction. Hydrogen generation rate was measured with changing the solution temperature, amount of catalyst loading, $NaBH_4$ concentration, and NaOH (a base-stabilizer) concentration. A passive air-breathing 2 W PEMFC stack was operated on hydrogen generated using $20wt%\;NaBH_4+5wt%$ NaOH solution and Ru catalyst.
