The compressive strength of PEG along processing concentration and solvent is willing to be measured and proper processing condition for exhibition and storage is also willing to be measured by comparing with dimensional stability. In the advanced research of setting PEG-preprocessing concentration & solvent for freeze drying of waterlogged archaeological wood of high water content, vacuum freeze drying showed the highest dimension stability after 40% PEG-preprocessing of aqueous solution. In this study, the compressive strength increased in proportion of processing concentration and water showed the relatively-higher compressive strength than t-butanol regarding solvent. Especially, it showed that there is no big strength difference between PEG 40% and PEG 50% in aqueous solution by 6.6%(16kgf/$cm^2$). According to the above results, it was recognized that it is most effective to implement freeze drying after 40% PEG-preprocessing when want to dimensional stability and compressive strength simultaneously.
The partition coefficient of the proteins of known effective hydrophobicity was determined in a poly (ethylene glycol)-dextran aqueous two-phase system. The changes in the partition coefficient was also determined when a fraction of PEG-palmitate (PEG-P) was added to the system. The partition coefficient of the proteins increased as the concentrations of PEG and dextran increased at a constant phase volume ration irrespective of the effective hydrophobicity of the proteins. When small amounts of PEG-P were added to the PEG phase, the partition coefficients of BSA and ${\beta}-lactoglobulin$, which had relative hydrophobicity (RI) of 700 and 120, respectively, increased more than ten-fold, whereas ovalbumin whose RI was 5 showed little change. The drastic increases m the partition coefficient were observed by the addition of PEG-P in 2% level to the PEG system. Addition of PEG-P over 5% level resulted in a slight further increase in the partition coefficient of all proteins tested.
Dimension stability was examined after PEG pretreatment and post freeze-drying treatment in order to determine the PEG(#3350) concentration and solvent for pre-treatment of freeze-drying of highly-degraded waterlogged ash woods(Fraxinus spp.; ca. 5,700 BP) excavated from peat lands at Pyungtack, Kyounggi-do. At the low concentration (<30-40%) of PEG soaking in both water and t-butanol, the weight increases abruptly, but at high concentration (>50%) gradually, consequently, taking longer treatment time. PEG loading was higher in t-butanol solution than in water. However, the best dimesional stability was obtained from freeze-drying after lower PEG solution (40% in water) soaking. Low dimensional stability, found in the samples treated with higher PEG solutions (60%-70% in t-butanol), might come from incomplete freezing and excess PEG absorbing moisture. The samples air-dried after 70% PEG treatment had collapse defects. In conclusion, the use of low concentration (about 40% in water) PEG solution was the most suitable pretreatment for freeze drying of highly-degraded waterlogged ash woods.

We investigated the effects of ethanol on solubilization of L-menthol solution. L-menthol solution was prepared by addition of PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil and PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil as nonionic surfactant. Ethanol was added in the solution to investigate effects of ethanol concentration on solubilization. We measured physical properties such as particle size and surface tension. The particle size and the surface tension became smaller with the increase of ethanol concentration.
In order to evaluate two-step treatment of PEG-freeze drying for highly-degraded waterlogged ash woods (Fraxinus PP.; ca. 5,700 BP), which were excavated from peat lands in western Korea, dimension stability was examined during 45 months after complete treatment. The samples pre-treated with PEG in water solution showed better dimensional stabilities than the ones with PEG in t-butanol(TBA) solution. It suggests that TBA reduced the flexibility of wood cells and overflying by TBA induced micro-checks during freeze drying. Micro-checks results in fragile wood structures and consequently, large shrinkage by moisture absorbances of high PEG contents during exposure in humid condition. The results suggest that PEG in water-solution treatment is better than PEG in t-butanol as pretreament for freeze drying of highly-degraded waterlogged ash woods.
A convenient and practical synthesis of 1, 8-dioxo-octahydroxanthene derivatives using various aldehydes, 5, 5-dimethyl-1, 3-cyclohexanedione in water was successfully carried out in the presence of polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a catalyst. Simple work-up, clean products, high yields and water as a green solvent are the attractive features of this methodology.

This study was focused on the synthesis of methoxy polyethylene glycol-oleanolic acid ester (mPEG-OA derivative) and investigation of its water solubility and anti-melanogenic effects. mPEG-OA derivative was identified by 1H and 13C NMR and FT-IR spectroscopic measurements. The water solubilities of mPEG-OA derivative and OA were found to be 13 and 0.013 mg/mL and that of mPEG-OA was found to be 1000-fold higher than that of OA. The effects of mPEG-OA derivative and OA on cell viability were measured using B16F10 melanoma cells. The viability of cells treated with mPEG-OA derivative (250 μM) increased 4-fold compared to that of cells treated with OA (62.5 μM). At mPEG-OA derivative and OA concentrations where the cell viability was unaffected, the inhibitory effect of mPEG-OA derivative and OA on the melanogenesis in B16F10 melanoma cells were 36 and 35% at 50 and 10 μM, respectively. The expression level of microphthalmia-associated transcription (MITF) was also reduced in B16F10 melanoma cells treated with mPEG-OA and OA. Overall, mPEG-OA derivative showed excellent water solubility and inhibitory effects of the melanogenesis, which could be used as a potential formulation for use in whitening functional cosmetic material.
The conservation has been conducted for the fragments of an wooden boat in the Neolithic Age, excavated from Bibong-ri, Changnyeong, Korea. The vacuum-freeze drying have been applied to mostly to the small relics, such as wooden lacquerwares or small wooden goods etc.. Therefore, the large objects like a wooden boats have been treated almost by air-drying after impregnation with aqueous PEG solution. The air-drying is needed to impregnate with PEG aqueous solution during long period and run the risk of the fault generation. This report explain an example adapted for the fragments of the wooden boat by humidity-controlled drying(HCD) with slow adjusting moisture content. We did the chemical pre-treatment, PEG aqueous solution. The concentration of the aqueous solution was increased gradually from 10% to 80%. After the impregnation, the objects were dried by the HCD. The dimensional stability of the fragments after treatment was good.
Japanese Larch(Larix kaempferi) was treated with aqueous solutions(30%, 40%, 50%) of polyethylene glycols(PEG, #1000, #1500, #4000, #6000) for the dimensional stabilization. The antiswelling efficiency(ASE) was measured for the evaluation of the dimensional stabilization. The weight percent gains(WPGs) of the woods treated with 40% solutions were higher than those of the others, and the highest WPG was achieved by treatment with 40% solution of PEG #1500. The ASE decreased with increasing molecular weight of PEG. ASE of woods treated with PEG #1000 and PEG #1500 were higher than those of the others.
The synthesis of poly(N,N-dimethylamino ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA)-block-poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)) copolymer has been carried out and the block copolymer was characterized by FT-IR, DSC, and $^1$H-NMR. The formation of polymeric nanoaggregation was observed in the solution mixture of poly(DMAEMA) -block-PEG copolymer and poly (ethyl acrylamide) (EAAm) due to the intermolecular interaction via hydrogen bond between DMAEMA and poly(EAAm). The formation of polymeric nanoaggregation was observed above critical micelle concentration (CMC).
