PEA법에 의한 캐패시터내 전하분포 측정 (Charge Distribution in a capacitor observed by PEA Method)

  • The use of the pulsed electro acoustic (PEA) method allowed us to perform the direct observations of spatio-temporal charge distributions in Electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs) based on polarizable nanoporous carbonaceous electrode. The negative charge density became the maximum, about 205 $C/m^3$ at the region where was near to collector layer in EDLCs for case $V_{DC}$ = 2.5 V, while the positively charged density became the maximum, about 61.1 $C/m^3$ at the region where it was located around the cathode layer. The PEA measurement used here is a very useful method to quantitively investigates the spatio-temporal charge distribution in EDLCs.

Effects of Rhizobium Inoculant, Compost, and Nitrogen on Nodulation, Growth, and Yield of Pea

  • The effects of Rhizobium inoculant, compost, and nitrogen on nodulation, growth, dry matter production, yield attributes, and yield of pea (Pisum sativum) var, IPSA Motorshuti-3 were assessed by a field experiment. Among the treatments Rhizobium inoculant alone performed best in recording number and dry weight of nodules/plant. The highest green seed yield of 8.38 ton/ha (36.9% increase over control) and mature seed yield of 2.97 ton/ha (73.7% increase over control) were obtained by the application of 90 kg N/ha. The effects of 60 kg N/ha, Rhizobium inoculant alone and Rhizobium inoculant along with 5 ton compost/ha were same as the effect of 90 kg N/ha in recording plant height, root length, dry weight of shoot, and root both at preflowering and pod filling stages, number of mature pods/plant, number of mature seeds/pod, 1000-seed weight, green, and mature seed yields of pea.

Determination of Energy and Time Requirement for Cooking Pigeon Pea (Cajanus cajan)

  • Purpose: High energy requirement and long cooking time are limiting consumption of pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan), a nutritious food. This study was performed to estimate energy and time demand by different methods of cooking pigeon pea. Methods: Pigeon pea (150 g) was soaked in 2.0 L of water at ambient temperature ($29{\pm} 2^{\circ}C$) to determine hydration behavior. Cooking experiments were conducted using aluminum and pressure-cooking pots. Efficiency of cooking was evaluated using four types of cooking appliances (kerosene, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), electric, and charcoal stoves). Normal (continuous heating until the food was satisfactorily cooked) and control (controlling the energy input to closely match the actual energy required) cooking were conducted. Energy requirement and duration of cooking were determined using standard procedures. Results: Soaking increased moisture content from 11.99 to 30.01% in 90 min, while water absorption rate decreased with soaking duration. In cooking 150 g of pigeon pea using kerosene stove, presoaked normal pressure-pot cooking method consumed the least energy (10 800 kJ) and time (205 min), while unsoaked normal cooking consumed the highest energy (18 450 kJ) and time (336 min). Using LPG stove, unsoaked normal cooking method required the highest energy (52 470 kJ), while presoaked control pressure-pot required the least energy (14 405 kJ). For electric stove, the lowest energy (15 560 kJ) and shortest duration (105 min) were recorded during control cooking of presoaked sample in the pressure-pot. Conclusions: Control cooking was not practicable using charcoal stove. Generally, kerosene stove consumed the least energy, while electric stove was found to have the shortest duration of cooking.

백색 완두유묘의 IAA분해효소계에 미치는 저온의 영향 (Effects of low temperature on the IAA degradation system in etiolated pea(Pisum sativum L. var. Sparkle) seedlings)

  • 저온에서 완두유묘 줄기의 유리 IAA 수준과 그 전구체인 트립토판 수준이 저하하므로, IAA수준의 조절 메커니즘을 규명하기 위하여 IAA분해효소계에 미치는 저온의 영향을 조사하였다. $25^{\circ}C$에서 키운 백색 관두유표를 $5^{\circ}C$의 저온으로 옮기면 IAA oxidase와 peroxidase의 수준은 증가하였으며 catalase의 수준은 저하되었고 과산화수소는 축적되어, 전체적으로 IAA분해계가 저온에서 강화되었다. 저온에 놓였던 유묘를 상온으로 옮기면 IAA 분해계는 다시 대조구 수준으로 회복하였다.

Control of Erysiphe pisi Causing Powdery Mildew of Pea (Pisum sativum) by Cashewnut (Anacardium occidentale) Shell Extract

  • The effect of methanolic extract of cashewnut (Anacardium occidentale) shell extract was seen on conidial germination of Erysiphe pisi and powdery mildew development in pea (Pisum sativum). Maximum conidial germination inhibition of E. pisi on glass slides was observed at 300 ppm. Similar effect on floated pea leaves was observed after 48 h at the same concentration. Conidial germination on intact untreated pea leaves was also assessed on II and IV nodal leaves while IV and II nodal leaves were treated with the extract and vice versa. There was tremendous reduction in conidial germination on all the nodal leaves. The disease intensity of pea powdery mildew was significantly reduced by methanolic extract of cashewnut shells. Maximum reduction was observed with 200 ppm where 39% disease intensity was recorded in comparison to 96.53% in the control. The phenolic acid content of pea leaves following treatments with this extract varied and no defmite pattern was observed. Out of several phenolic compounds, namely, gallic, ferulic, chlorogenic, and cinnamic acids, only gallic acid was found to be present consistently in all the treatments with varied amounts.

Responses of Pea Varieties to Rhizobium Inoculation: Nitrogenase Activity, Dry Matter Production and Nitrogen Uptake

  • The responses of five varieties and three cultivars of pea (Pisum sativum) to Rhizobium inoculation on nodulation, growth, nitrogenase activity, dry matter production and N uptake were investigated. The pea varieties were IPSA Motorshuti-l, IPSA Motorshuti-2, IPSA Motorshuti-3, BARI Motorshuti-l, BARI Motorshuti-2 and the cultivars were 063, Local small and Local white. Fifty percent seeds of each pea variety/cultivar were inoculated with a mixture of Rhizobium inoculants at rate of 15g/kg seed and the remaining fifty percent seeds were kept uninoculated. The plants inoculated with Rhizobium inoculant significantly increased nodulation, growth, nitrogenase activity, dry matter production and N uptake. Among the varieties/cultivars, BARI Motorshuti-l performed best in almost all parameters including nitrogenase activity of root nodule bacteria of the crop. There were positive correlations among the number and dry weight of nodules (r=$0.987^{**}$, $0.909^{**}$), nitrogenase activity of root nodule bacteria (r=$0.944^{**}$, $0.882^{**}$), dry weight of shoot (r=$0.787^{**}$, $0.952^{**}$), N content (r=$0.594^{**}$, $0.605^{**}$) and N uptake (r=$0.784^{**}$, $0.922^{**}$) by shoot both at flowering and pod filling stages of the crop, respectively. It was concluded that BARI Motorshuti-l in symbiotic association with Rhizobium inoculant performed best in recording nitrogenase activity, dry matter production and N uptake by pea.

Foliar Application of Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria Increases Antifungal Compounds in Pea (pisum sativum) Against Erysiphe pisi

  • Systemic effect of two plant growth-promoting rhizobacterial (PGPR) strains, viz., Pseudomonas fluorescens (Pf4) and P. aeruginosa (Pag), was evaluated on pea (Pisum sativum) against the powdery mildew pathogen Erysiphe pisi. Foliar spray of the two PGPR strains was done on specific nodal leaves of pea and conidial germination of E. pisi was observed on other nodal leaves, distal to the treated ones. Conidial germination was reduced on distant leaves and at the same time, specific as well as total phenolic compounds increased in the leaves distal to those applied with PGPR strains, thereby indicating a positive correlation. The strains induced accumulation of phenolic compounds in pea leaves and the amount increased when such leaves were get inoculated with E. pisi conidia. Between the two strains, Pag was found to be more effective than Pf4 as its effect was more persistent in pea leaves. Foliar application of PGPR strains for the control of powdery mildew of pea is demonstrated in vitro while correlating it with the increased accumulation of plant phenolics.

아토피피부염에서 갈근황금황련탕 추출물의 ECS 조절을 통한 염증 완화 효과 (Inflammation Relief Effect through ECS Control of Galgeunhwanggeumhwangryeon-tang Extract in Atopic Dermatitis)

  • Objective The purpose of this study was to confirm the effects of Galgeunhwanggeumhwangryeon-tang in reducing inflammation through the endocannabinoid system (ECS) control in atopic dermatitis. Methods 8-week-old Balb/C mice were divided into 4 groups: contorl group (Ctrl), lipid barrier elimination group (ADE), palmitoylethanolamide treated group after lipid barrier elimination (PEA), and Galgeunhwanggeumhwangryeon-tang applied group after lipid barrier elimination (GGRT). After inducing atopic dermatitis, cannabinoid receptor (CB) 1, CB2, CD68, phosphorylated inhibitor kappa B (p-IκB), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), substance P and serotonin were observed to confirm the regulation of the ECS, macrophage activity and mast cell activity. Results CB1 and CB2 showed higher positive reactions in the GGRT than in the LBE and PEA. CD68, p-IκB and iNOS showed higher positive reaction in the LBE, PEA and GGRT than in the Ctrl, but the increase in the positive reaction was lower in the GGRT compared to the LBE and PEA. Substance P and serotonin showed higher positive reaction in the LBE, PEA and GGRT than in the Ctrl, but the increase in the positive reaction was lower in the GGRT compared to the LBE and PEA. Conclusions The effects of Galgeunhwanggeumhwangryeon-tang were confirmed though the regulation of the ECS, macrophage activity and mast cell activity.

Analysis of soyasaponin content and biosynthesis-related gene expression in young pea (Pisum sativum L.) sprouts

  • In legumes, soyasaponins, one of triterpenoid saponins, are major components of secondary metabolites with a more diverse array of bioactive chemicals. Although the biosynthetic pathway of soyasaponins has been largely studied in soybean, the study on the soyasaponin contents and biosynthesis-related gene expression in pea (Pisum sativum L.) is poorly understood. Here, we found the accumulation of only soyasaponin Bb component in the sprouts of two Korean domestic pea cultivars (Dachung and Sachul). This pattern was consistent with our observation that increased expression of PsUGT73P2 and PsUGT91H4 genes, but not PsCYP72A69, could be responsible for biosynthesis of only soyasaponin Bb in pea by examining their gene expression. However, gradual accumulation of soyasaponin Bb at developmental stages was not consistent with the expression of PsUGT73P2 and PsUGT91H4, suggesting that the changes of their protein activities may affect the accumulation patterns of soyasaponin Bb. We also revealed that the increased expression levels of PsUGT73P2 and PsUGT91H4 during light to dark transition led to increase of soyasaponin Bb contents. Collectively, our results provided a molecular basis of metabolic engineering for enhancing useful soyasaponin Bb metabolites in Korean domestic pea cultivars.

Scanning Electron Microscopy을 이용한 완두 전분 복합면의 반죽구조 및 특성연구 (A study on the characteristics and noodle structure made from pea starch-wheat composite flour using a scanning electron microscopy)

  • 완두 전분입자의 형태 및 완두 복합분의 반죽구조, 조리직후의 복합면의 내부구조를 SEM으로 조사한 결과는 다음과 같다. 완두전분은 타원형으로 그 크기가 불규칙적이고 다른 전분에 비해 크고 구부러지거나 들어간 모양이었다. 95$^{\circ}C$에서 가열하였을 때 완두전분은 부분적으로 중첩되었을 뿐 그 형태는 거의 유지하였다. P20과 C20의 반죽 구조는 밀가루 반죽에서의 큰 전분 입자들이 전체적으로 분포되어 있는 것에 비해 작은 전분입자들이 많아졌으며, P30은 다른 복합분 반죽의 구조보다 좀 더 많고 작은 전분입자들이 엉켜 있었다. 국수를 조리한 직후와 조리한 후 30분이 지난 뒤의 형태 변화를 관찰한 결과 P30과 P20의 조리된 직후의 형태는 각각 상이한 형태를 나타내었고 조리 30분후의 형태도 매우 다르게 나타났다. SEM으로 관찰된 P20과 C20의 구조는 밀가루 반죽과 큰 차이를 보이지 않아 제면시 영향을 주지 않을 것으로 보였으며 P30 역시 P20과 큰 차이를 나타내지 않아 제면적성으로는 문제가 없는 것으로 나타났다. Farinogram에 나타난 P20과 P30은 밀가루와 유사한 반죽시간과 중간정도의 안정도를 보이는 반면에 C20은 짧은 반죽시간과 낮은 안정도를 보였다. 대체로 C20이 P20, P30에 비해 도착시간과 반죽형성시간, 안정도가 짧게 나타났다. 또한 P20은 밀가루와 유사한 안정도와 반죽 저항도(MTI)를 나타냄으로서 제면적성에 적합함을 입증하였다.
