Influence of constraint MgO deposition onto phosphors on luminance properties in AC Plasma Display Panels

  • One of the important problems in recent AC-PDP technology is the image sticking. In this research, we have investigated the PDP cell with constraint deposition MgO on phosphor, the electrical and optical properties in the PDP cell were examined. Also, we have investigated the correlation with image sticking and degraded MgO protective layer, phosphor in AC-PDP. As a result, we measured the secondary electron emission coefficient ${\gamma}$, discharge characteristics and Brightness for the constraint degraded phosphor are compared with those of nondegraded phosphor.

Control of Blue Phosphor Layer Cross-section and Its Improved Discharge Characteristics

  • The effects of phosphor properties such as the granular sizes and shape on the crosssectional shape of phosphor layer and plasma discharge characteristics for improving the luminance and luminous efficiency in ac PDP have been investigated. As the granular size decreases, the thickness of vertical side of barrier rib in blue cell decreases, and wheras the thickness of bottom side increases due to increased dispersibility. In addition, the phosphor with round granular shape showing good dispersibility shows better voltage margin and higher luminous efficiency due to their improved discharge volume and packing density.

  • High luminance 3D built-in PDP panel was developed with newly adopted fast-decaying phosphor. Luminance of 3D PDP was increased about 40% by reducing the particle size of RGB phosphors and using $Y_3(Al,Ga)_5O_{12}:Ce^{3+}$ phosphor. Decay time of developed 3D PDP was 5.2ms/4.9ms for Red/Green color.

The Optimum Phosphor Thickness to Obtain the Highest Luminance and Luminous Efficiency in ac PDP

  • Plasma display panel(PDP) have gained great attention due to their potential application to large-area display including HDTV. The luminance and luminous efficiency of PDP, however, should be improved to realize this goal. In this study, we examined experimentally the effects of phosphor thickness and discharge gap on the luminance and luminous efficiency of ac PDP. For the rib height of 110 ${\mu}m$, whereas the optimum phosphor thickness was about 30 ${\mu}m$. The optimum thickness of green phosphor was about 50 ${\mu}m$ for the rib height of $120{\sim}160\;{\mu}m$.

  • The degradation characteristics of R, G, B phosphor layers in AC-PDP, which is due to the discharge of plasma, are still unknown. For the successful commercialization of AC-PDP, the degradation of phosphor layers, caused by the plasma discharge must be investigated and improved. In this paper, the degradation properties of phosphor layers in AC-$PDP_S$ are investigated. It takes long time to investigate the degradation in real condition, so that the device for accelerating the degradation is devised. To prove the performance of the device, the visible emission characteristics of phosphor layers and discharge with the environmental temperature are examined. As a result, it is shown that the phosphor layers are easily degraded when the discharge is sustained under high environmental temperature condition. After accelerating the degradation of blue Phosphor layer((Ba,Eu)Mg$AI_10$$O_17$) for 48 hours, its luminance decreases about 38 % and the corresponding color purity deteriorates severely.

  • Transparent ac-PDP test panel was prepared via a combination of materials including ITO sustaining electrodes, thin film dielectric layer and nano-sized phosphor powders. The thin film dielectric layer was prepared by E-beam evaporation process and phosphor layer was deposited on metal mesh pattern by electrophoretic deposition process. The optical transmittance and luminance of the panel indicated that full color transparent ac-PDP is feasible with the approach.

A Study of False Contour Noise in Moving Images through Consideration of the Phosphor Decay Time of AC PDP

  • The dynamic false contour noise was analyzed with consideration for the phosphor decay time of an ac PDP by computer simulation based on the measurement of the 1/10 phosphor decay times of the primary colors red, green and blue at the main wavelengths of each phosphor. The noise level of dynamic false contour is strongly dependent on phosphor decay time. The noise level decreases incrementally with the phosphor decay time, whereas the noise width increases. The moving velocity of an object does not affect the noise level. The entire experiment was performed under the condition of 8 subfields ADS driving scheme, 2.5[${\mu}sec$] scan speed, and 5[${\mu}sec$] sustain period with VGA grade panel.

  • Plasma display Panels(PDPs) are one of the leading technologies currently under development for large-area high-brightness flat panel displays. However, the luminance and luminous efficiency of at PDPs should be improved. Especially, one of the main factors affecting on the luminance and luminous efficiency of ac PDP may be the phosphor thickness and size of discharge space. In this study, we examined into addressing time, electrical and optical properties as a parameter of the phosphor thickness and the size of discharge space during the display period of ac PDP. It is found out that the optimum phosphor thickness was $50{\mu}m$ and height of discharge space was about $100{\mu}m$.

  • Phosphor layers on rear plate of PDP were formed via osmosis coating process in an attempt to improve thickness uniformity of phosphor layer and eventually to enhance luminance and its efficiency of plasma display panel. The phosphor layers were formed uniformly not only on the sidewalls of barrier ribs but also on the dielectric layer of rear plate by the process. The processing parameters affecting the thickness uniformity of the phosphor layer formed by the osmotic coating process were investigated.

  • The optical properties such as luminance and color coordinates for phosphor layer were studied with applied voltage and gas pressure, Xe mixing ratio, frequency using He and Xe mixing gas in chamber like AC PDP. The luminance of red phosphor layer at constant pressure(300Toor) is increased with increasing voltage, but color purity is not varied. The luminance of red phosphor layer at constant voltage(280V)is decreased with increasing pressure, but the color purity is not varied. But the luminance is increased with increasing Xe mixing ratio at constant pressure(200Toor). And also the color purity is improved by this process. The luminance is increased up to 40kHz, but the color purity with frequency is not varied.
