  • The present study describes the considerations on the long-term reliability of the on-line partial discharge (PD) ceramic sensor for thermal power generators. Voltage acceleration aging tests were carried out under continuous and impulsive thermal aging at more than $100^{\circ}C$, considering the practical service environment. Experimental results show that the sensors have a life that could last for more than 100 years, excellent dielectric characteristics, and insulation strength. In addition, the ceramic on-line PD sensors were installed in a thermal power generator in Korea for demonstration. The results of the PD calibration and test voltage application prove that the on-line ceramic sensors have satisfactory performances for on-line PD measurement.

  • This paper presents partial discharge localization in stator winding of generators using multi-conductor transmission line (MTL) and RLC ladder network models. The high-voltage (HV) winding of a 6kV/250kW generator has been modeled by MATLAB software. The simulation results of the MTL and the RLC ladder network models have been evaluated with the measurements results in the frequency domain by applying of the Pearson’s correlation coefficients. Two PD generated calibrator signals in kHz and MHz frequency range were injected into different points of generator winding and the signals simulated/measured at the both ends of the winding. For partial discharge localization in stator winding of generators is necessary to calculate the frequency spectrum of the PD current signals and then estimate the poles of the system from the calculated frequency spectrum. Finally, the location of PD can be estimated. This theory applied for the above generator and the simulation/measured results show the good correlation for PD Location for RLC ladder network and MTL models in the frequency range of kHz (10kHz<f<1MHz) and MHz (1MHz<f<5MHz) respectively.

  • In connection with the monitoring of insulation degradation of large power apparatus in order to predict their unexpected service failures, a statistical treatment, such as phase resolved partial discharge analysis(PRPDA), has been established for the on-line monitoring system during the past decades. However, this method has shown some inconveniences to distinguish the nature of the PD source in power apparatus. In this regard, a novel approach based on the chaotic analysis(CAPD) is proposed describing the fundamental ideas, outcomes and different view points from conventional PRPDA. In order to make a model for the possible defects causing sudden failures in service, several types of specimen were prepared. And partial discharge signals, originated from those samples, were measured and analysed by means of PRPDA and CAPD respectively. Throughout this paper, it seems that the correlation between the consecutive PD pulses depending on the nature of PD could be investigated by CAPD. Therefore, it could be considered that the nature of PD source can be distinguished more distinctively when the PRPDA is combined with CAPD.

  • This paper presents an ultra-low partial discharge(PD) measurement system that has been accepted as a non-destructive method to estimate electrical insulation of low-voltage electric devices. The PD measurement system is composed of a coupling network, a low noise amplifier, and associated electronics. A shielding box is used to make a better condition against electromagnetic interference. A low cut-off frequency of the coupling network was 1MHz(-3 dB). Calibration tests on laboratory set-up have shown that the PD measurement system has a stable sensitivity of 11.4mV/pC. In an application experiment on a low-voltage induction motor(5HP), we could detect 0.77pC level of partial discharge pulse at the applied voltage of AC 664 V$_{peak}$.

  • Reduction in pollution performance of polymeric insulators, aged due to water absorption stress and thermal stress, is a major threat to the reliable operation of power transmission and distribution system. Formation of partial discharges on the surface of wet polluted insulator plays a major role in determining the life time and pollution performance of outdoor polymeric insulators. However, reports on partial discharge characteristics of water absorption stress aged and thermal aged polymeric insulators are scanty. This paper discusses the pollution performance characteristics of accelerated aged polymeric insulators using the advanced ultra wide band PD signal measurement and analysis. Laboratory experiments on accelerated aged polymeric insulators were carried out as per IEC 60507 under AC voltage, at different humidity and contamination levels using NaCl as a contaminant. PRPD pattern and Time-Frequency map analysis of PD signals were carried out. From the results, it can be speculated that PD analysis is a well suited technique to understand the pollution performance of aged polymeric insulators.

  • In recent years, diagnostic techniques have been investigated to detect a partial discharge(PD) in a high voltage electrical equipment. Because PD signal is very sensitive and difficult to suppress strong noises such as narrow-band radio frequency noise and random noise, the accuracy and credibility of PD measurement might be influenced by surrounding interference. Using the technique of PD detection by electromagnetic wave, we have studied the characteristics of both PD and substation-in interference signal. Also, we propose a wavelet packet transform based technique to perform a feature extraction from the interference and PD signal and a classification of the extracted features. The results show that time-frequency characteristics between PD and interference can be obviously distinguished. It is helpful for the development of the insulation diagnosis technique.

  • In this paper, the narrow-band characteristic, which is the disadvantage of the existing the PD sensor, was improved by transforming the sensor shape into a trapezoidal shape to improve the characteristics of the dipole-shaped conventional PD(Patial Discharge) sensor. In addition, by applying a cavity structure, which is a structure that can fundamentally block the electromagnetic wave signal from the outside as it is used for an external sensor, it is a partial discharge sensor that takes advantage of the structural advantages of low cost and convenience of installation. As a result of the experiment, it was shown that there is a broadband characteristic of about 70.5%(1.59~3.32GHz) at the center frequency of 2.45GHz, and the broadband characteristic was confirmed.

  • Internal voids located within an insulation will arise partial discharge that causes local breakdown and even the entire insulation breakdown. For HV apparatuses, it is usual case that several voids are formed within non-uniform electric field condition rather than single void within uniform field, which can be solved analitically. The purpose of this work is to study partial discharge and breakdown characteristics of an insulation according to the distribution pattern of two disc-type voids that are located within non-uniform field. The results from numerical field analysis and experiments show that the electric field within the voids decreases as they are arranged more serially, which accordingly results in the increase of partial discharge inception field(PDIF) much higher than that of single void model. With parallel arranged voids, PDIF is almost the same as that of single void model. On the other hand, AC breakdown strength decreases as voids are arranged more serially, which is a natural result considering the reduction of effective insulation thickness. For parallel voids, this effect cannot he noticed where as they show different pattern compared with single void and serial void models in $\Phi$-Q-N analysis. Considering these results may leads us to the conclusion that, in the evaluation of insulating products through PD test, it is not sufficient to determine only PDIV or existence of PD at predetermined voltage level. We could evaluate more accurately by considering all the available data such as PDIV, PD magnitude, PD occurring phase, number of PD pulses, and etc.

  • This paper introduces a partial discharge (PD) severity metric, S, based on the evaluation of time-sequence PD data capture and resulting Time-Sequence-Analysis Discharge (TSAD) level distributions. Basically based on an IEC60270 measurement technique, each PD event is time stamped and the discharge level noted. By evaluating the time differences between a previous and subsequent discharge, a 3D plot of time-sequence activity and discharge levels can be produced. From these parameters a measurement of severity, which takes into account dynamic or instantaneous variations in both the time of occurrence and the level of discharge, rather than using standard repetition rate techniques, can be formulated. The idea is to provide a measure of the severity of PD activity for potentially measuring the state of insulation within an item of plant. This severity measure is evaluated for a simple point-plane geometry in $SF_{6}$ as a function of gap distance and applied high voltage. The results show that as the partial discharge activity increases, the severity measure also increases. The importance of future investigations, quantifications and evaluations of the robustness, sensitivity and importance of such a severity measurement, as well as comparing it with typical repetition rate assessment techniques, and other monitoring techniques, are also very briefly discussed.

  • Partial discharge pulse shapes from variable PD (partial discharge) sources sustain many characteristics such as types of PD. Ultra high frequency antennas have wide bandwidth from 30KHz to 2㎓. Therefore, signals taken from a UHF antenna have important attributes (rising time, falling time, shape factor, etc.) for electromagnetic sources, such as PD sources. We investigated PD pulse shapes from several PD sources using a UHF antenna and the results were used for classification of PD sources. Features for discrimination are extracted from frequency distribution and LPC (Linear Prediction Coefficient) of time signal. RBFN are used for investigating the possibility of classification of multi-PD sources.
