  • The purpose of this study is to develop a new method which enables the goat ESR to be used as an effective clinical test. Blood samples were taken from 61 Korean native goats aged above one year old and the effect of tube inclinations, tube bores, tube lengths, environmental temperatures during tests and packed erythrocyte volumes (PCV) on the ESR were observed. The results were summarized as follows. 1. The ESR/hr using capillary hematocrit tube (Micro-Ht-tube) was gradually increased as the tube angle inclined from 90 (vertical) to 15 degrees and the best angle in view of both security and fast sedimentation rate was found to be an angle of 45 degrees. 2. The 45-degree angled ESR ($45^{\circ}$-ESR) increased as the diameter of tube bore decreased. 3. The tube length did not affect the $45^{\circ}$-ESR in percent. 4. The $45^{\circ}$-ESR increased with the increased environmental temperature during the ESR test. 5. The heparinized Micro-Ht tubes did not affect the $45^{\circ}$-ESR of EDTA-blood in healthy group but in anemic group. In the anemic group, the ESRs by the heparinized Micro-Ht-tubes were slightly higher than those by non-heparinized Micro-Ht-tubes. 6. By using the autologous plasma, PCV of the blood was adjusted to be 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50ml/100ml and $45^{\circ}$-ESRs were determined in the Micro-Ht-tubes. The $45^{\circ}$-ESRs increased as the values of PCV decreased. The regression of the $45^{\circ}ESR$ to PCV was curvilinear with the second degree polynomial, $Y=42.1838-1.7355X+0.0180X^2$(r=0.9997). 7. The $45^{\circ}$-ESR/hr, using non-heparinized Micro-Ht-tubes at $20^{\circ}C$, was determined in 35 healthy Korean native goats. The average PCV was $30.6{\pm}1.4ml/100ml$. The observed ESR values averaged $6.8{\pm}1.7%$ and the corrected ESR values to the standard PCV of 31ml/100ml averaged $6.5{\pm}1.2%$. From these results, the angled capillary tube method was found to be desirable ESR test of goat blood in which EDTA-blood is filled in nonheparinized Micro-Ht-tubes held at an angle of 45 degrees for an hour at $20^{\circ}C$.

  • The measurement of angled erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), as a replacement for perpendicular ESR, for cattle blood was scrutinized since it has been well known that perpendicular ESR in cattle is too slow to be adopted as an effective clinical test. Samples of blood were taken from 186 Korean native cattle over 2 years old. The results obtained in the experiment were summarized as follows. 1. Average values of perpendicular ESR/24hrs in 15 apparently healthy cattle, as measured by Wintrobe, Westergren and capillary tubes, were $5.8{\pm}2.2$, $11.1{\pm}3.7$ and $10.4{\pm}4.5%$ respectively, which were found to be similar to the values of perpendicular ESR/hr of normal blood of human. 2. The ESR was determined in the tubes held at 90, 75, 60, 45, 30 and 15-degree angles, using 3 types of tubes. For the diagnostic purposes, the best results were obtained from the tubes held at 45-degree angle. 3. The angled ESR values increased as the diameters of the tube-bores decreased. 4. The tube length did not affect the angled ESR(%). 5. The angled ESR values increased with the increased environmental temperature during the ESR measurement. 6. The storage temperature at $5^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$ and $35^{\circ}C$, of the blood for 24 hours did not affect the angled ESR. 7. Samples of blood were treated with 4 kinds of anticoagulants (heparin, $K_2$-EDTA, double oxalate and sodium citrate) and the ESR was determined at 45-degree angle, using capillary hematocrit tubes. The ESR values were higher in the blood samples treated with sodium citrate than in those treated with other anticoagulants. 8. By using the autologous plasma, the PCV was adjusted to be 5, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50ml/100ml and the ESR was determined in the capillary hematocrit and Wintrobe tubes held at 45 degrees. In both of the methods the ESRs increased as the values of PCV decreased. The regressions of ESR to PCV in both 45-degree-angled capillary and Wintrobe tubes were curvilinear. For the capillary hematocrit tubes the second degree polynomial $Y=61.9779-2.3533x+0.0228x^2$ (r=0.9999) fits the data. And in the case of Wintrobe tubes the second degree polynomial $Y=27.9767-1.1314x-0.0117x^2$ (r=0.9998) fits the data. 9. The 45-degree angled ESR was determined in the blood of 71 healthy Korean native cows using capillary hematocrit tubes. The average PCV was $35.4{\pm}3.6ml/100ml$. The observed ESR/hr averaged $7.2{\pm}2.7%$, while the corrected ESR/hr to a PCV of 36ml/100ml averaged $6.6{\pm}1.3%$. From these results it was concluded that to obtain the best results the ESR/hr of Korean native cattle should be determined at 45-degree angle at room temperature($20^{\circ}C$) using capillary hematocrit tubes.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the changes of blood chemical values in 61 crossbred calves at 1 day, 1 week, 2 weeks, 4 weeks and 9 weeks of age, respectively. The blood chemical values of calves with diarrhea were compared with those of normal calves, and blood chemical values were compared for groups of calves with weight gain divided into four ranges; up to 0.9 kg/wk and over 7.0 kg/wk. The results obtained in this study show that the mean values and standard deviation of red blood cell (RBC) and packed cell volume (PCV) of normal calves at 1 day of age (806.7$\pm $56.5 10$^{4}$/$\mu$l and 33.8$\pm $5.2 %) decreased at 1 week of age and increased at 2 and 4 weeks of age. The PCV of normal calves at 9 weeks of age (32.6$\pm $2.3 %) was significantly lower than that at 2 and 4 weeks of age (p<0.05). Total protein of normal calves at 1 day of age (6.8$\pm $0.5 g/100 ml) decreased to 6.4$\pm $0.6 g/100ml at 1 week and increased to 7.0$\pm $ 0.7 g/100 ml at 2 weeks. After 2 weeks of age, total protein tended to decrease gradually to 9 weeks of age. Glucose of normal calves at 9 weeks of age (78$\pm $4 mg/100 ml) was significantly lower than that at 1 week (110$\pm $8 mg/100 ml) (p<0.01). At all ages, RBC, white blood cell (WBC), PCV and fibrinogen of calves with diarrhea were higher than those of normal calves. RBC and PCV of calves with diarrhea at 1 week of age (929.7$\pm $39.7 10$^{4}$/$\mu$ and 42.3$\pm $0.4 % were significantly higher than those of normal calves at 1 week (786.4$\pm $80.9 10$^{4}$/$\mu$l and 32.2$\pm $3.8 %) (p< 0.05), which suggest that diarrhea at this age can be dangerous. The weekly weight gain was an average of 4.2 kg/wk from birth to 9weeks. RBC, PCV, fibrinogen, total protein and vitamin E of calves with weight gain more than 4.0kg/wk. From the above results we obtained eledata support the importance of providing high quality feed from 4 weeks to 9 weeks of age for satisfactory weight gain of calves.

  • The purpose of this study is to build up control scheme that promptly control pressure in a hydraulic cylinder having comparatively small control volume, using a PCV (proportional control valve) and a digital computer. Object pressure control system has the character to be unstable easily, because the displacement-flow gain of the PCV is too large considering the small volume of the hydraulic cylinder and the time delay of response of the PCV is comparatively long. Considering the above-mentioned characteristics of the object pressure control system, in this study, control system is designed with two degree of freedom control scheme that is composed by adding a feed-forward control path to I-PDD$^{2}$ control system, and a reference model is used on the decision of control parameters. And through some experiments on the control system with FF-I-PDD$^{2}$ controller, the validity of this control method has been confirmed.

  • The nature of genetic variation and diversity among the 65 multivoltine silkworm genotypes was evaluated for 16 post cocoon characters. The components of genetic variation revealed higher PCV (60.487%) and GCV (44.56%) for evenness (variation 1) followed by cohesion (PCV=55.38%, GCV=40.36%) and non-broken filament length (PCV=32.05%, GCV=31.28%). The higher heritability ($h^2$ in broad sense) was observed for boil-off loss (95.6%) followed by non-broken filament length (95.22%). The both genotypic and phenotypic correlation indicated significant positive correlation of filament length with non-broken filament length, silk recovery, raw silk, neatness, and low neatness; and negative correlation with denier, renditta and silk waste. The principal component analysis (PCA) revealed 75.381 % of total variance from the five principal components extracted. On the basis of Mahalonobis' $D^2$ values (Ward's minimum variance), the sixty-five multivoltine silkworm genotypes were classified in to 9 clusters with substantial inter and intra cluster distances. Number of genotypes included in different clusters varied from 3 to 17. The results indicated that the optimum distance obtained in cluster VII (15.059) along with higher cluster mean values especially for filament length, non broken filament length, renditta, silk recovery, silk waste, and raw silk emphasized the utilization of these genotypes in the conventional silkworm breeding programme for improvement of multivoltine silk fibre quality. The possibility of exploiting genetic variation in post cocoon traits for efficient breeding programme is discussed.

  • To get the highly-accurate and precise position of a GPS receiver, they should consider the state-of-the-art GPS force and measurement models. Especially, the phase center variations (PCV) of a GPS antenna can cause several centimeters of positioning errors in the vertical direction. In this study, we implemented four different models of PCV and evaluated their impact on the computed coordinates. The test data were taken from the 14 National Geography Information Institute permanent GPS stations and 30 Minisry of Government Administration and Home Affairs sites. For different combinations of calibration methods, an average of 1.3-2.6cm of height difference was observed. Also, we found a maximum error of ${\sim}4mm$ in the estimates of the precipitable water vapors.

  • This paper deals with the impact of a GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) antenna radome on the PCV (Phase Center Variations) and the estimated kinematic coordinates. For the Trimble and Leica antennas, specially set up CORS (Continuously Operation Reference Stations) in Korea, the PCC (Phase Center Corrections) were calculated and compared for NONE, SCIS, SCIT, and TZGD radome from the PCV model published by the IGS (International GNSS Services). The results revealed that the PCC differences compared to the NONE were limited to about 1mm in the horizontal component while those of the vertical direction ranged from a few millimeters to a maximum of 7mm. Among the radomes of which PCV were compared, the SCIT had the most significant influence on the vertical component, and its GPS (Global Positioning System) L2 and L2 PCC (Phase Center Corrections) had opposite direction. As a result of comparing the kinematic coordinates estimated by the baseline processing of 7 CORSs with an application of the PCV models of the various radomes, the SCIS which was actually installed at CORS in Korea showed 3.4mm bias, the most substantial impact on the ellipsoidal height estimation whereas the SCIT model resulted in relatively small biases.

  • A small electrical potential difference which appears on any solid body when subjected to illumination by a modulated light beam generated by laser is called photocharge voltage(PCV)[1,2]. This voltage is proportional to the induced change in the surface electrical charge and is capacitatively measured on various materials such as conductors, semiconductors, ceramics, dielectrics and biological objects. The amplitude of the detected signal depends on the type of material under investigation, and on the surface properties of the sample. In photocharge voltage spectroscopy measurements[3], the sample is illuminated by both a steady state monochromatic bias light and the pulsed laser. The monochromatic light is used to created a variation in the steady state population of trap levels in the surface and space charge region of semiconductor samples which does result in a change in the measured voltage. Using this technique the spatial variation of PCV can be utilized to evalulate the surface conditions of the sample and the variation of the PCV due to the monochromatic bias light are utilized to charactrize the surface states. A qualitative analysis of the proposed measuremen is present along with experimental results performed on amorphous silicon samples. The deposition temperature was varied in order to obtain samples with different structural, optical and electronic properties and measurements are related to the defect density in amorphous thin film.

  • Streptococus pneumoniae is an important cause of invasive infections as well as non-invasive infections such as acute otitis media and sinusitis both in children and adults. Resistance of S. pneumoniae to multiple antimicrobials is increasing and poses therapeutic challenges, and prevention became more important. 23-valent polysaccharide vaccine has been used for the last several decades, but is not effective in children <2 years of age, the highest risk group of invasive diseases. Recently, a 7-valent pneumococcal protein conjugate vaccine(PCV) which is effective in infants and young children has been developed. The efficacy of PCVs against invasive pneumococcal disease and pneumonia is well established and is documented in several well-conducted studies. However, the effect of PCVs on otitis media is less obvious and more complex. PCVs clearly reduce diseases caused by vaccine-type(VT) pneumococci, but replacement of VT serotypes by non-VT serotypes in nasopharyngeal carriage of S. pneumoniae is responsible for the increase in acute otitis media caused by non-VT serotypes. Three years after introduction of PCV in the US, some increase of invasive infections with serotype 19A possibly due to serotype switching within certain vaccine type strains has been noted. Since most antibiotic-resistance in S. pneumoniae is confined to VT serotypes, vaccine use also reduces antibiotic resistance. With development of PCV, there was a great advance in the prevention of pneumococcal diseases, but replacement with potential virulent organisms and development of antibiotic resistance in non-VT pneumococci is a possibility that needs careful monitoring.
