해양동물 눈알고둥으로부터 새로운 렉틴 성분의 분리 및 정제 (Purification and Characterization of A New Lectin from Marine Animal Lunella coronata coreensis)

  • The whole body extract of Lunella coronata coreensis agglutinated nonspecifically human and other animal erythrocytes. A new lectin was purified by the following procedures: 0.15 M NaCl extraction, salt fractionation, gel filtration, anionic and cationic ion exchange column chromatographies. Through these purification procedures, specific activity of LCC-I was increased from 276 to 9714.3 units/mg, And on polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, LCC-I exhibited one major band. A molecular weight of LCC-I was assumed to be 20,000 by sodium dodesyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The purified lectin was relatively stable at various pH and heat. Among the tested sugars, lactose and lactulose inhibited lectin activity at a concentration of 6.25 mM, respectively.

The Genus Philanthus (Hymenoptera: Sphecidae: Philanthinae) in Korea

  • The genus Philanthus Fabricius, 1790 in Korea are reviewed, and two species, Philanthus triangulum and P. coronata, are treated. The former is new to Korea. This species is easily separated from congeners by dense punctures in propodral enclosure and tri-forked marking in lower face. DNA barcoding test is supportive in our identification as well as conspecitficity of Korean materials showing variation in size and coloration. The observed data on flower associations of this species specified with domestic localites and date are separately provided. The current status of Philanthus coronatus that has been the only representative of the genus but forgotten for a lengthy time in Korea is discussed.

Performance of growing lambs supplemented with ground licuri (Syagrus coronata)

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of dietary ground licuri on lamb performance. Methods: Forty male lambs were used in a completely randomized design to test the effects of 0, 5, 10, and 15 g/kg of ground licuri added to diets. The trial lasted for 75 days. Intake, digestibility, physically effective neutral detergent fiber, and chewing activity were estimated. Blood samples were taken on day 45 to determine the concentrations of glucose, urea, non-esterified fatty acids, and triglycerides. Average daily gain (ADG) were determined on the last day of the experimental trial. Results: Licuri inclusion markedly increased dietary neutral detergent fiber and ether extract (EE) content, but it decreased dry matter (DM) intake. However, the intake and digestibility of EE linearly increased. The ADG decreased linearly (p<0.05) with licuri inclusion. Licuri had no effect (p>0.05) on the concentrations of blood metabolites; however, blood urea increased (p<0.05), while serum glucose decreased (p<0.05). Conclusion: The physically effective fiber of ground licuri is similar to Tyfton hay and licuri inclusion decreases lamb performance due to a decreased in DM intake.

Inhibitory activity of methanol extracts from different colored flowers on aldose reductase and HPLC-UV analysis of quercetin

  • The methanol extracts of flowers obtained from 67 plant species were screened for their inhibitory activity on aldose reductase (AR). Alnus japonica, Aster spathulifolius, Chionanthus retusus, Morus bombycis, Crysanthemum boreale, Persicaria tinctoria, Platycarya strobilacea, and Serratula coronata var. insularis exhibited potent aldose reductase inhibitory (ARI) activity. HPLC-UV analysis of quercetin, an AR inhibitory flavonoid, was performed on extracts showing strong ARI activity. Quercetin was detected in C. retusus, C. boreale, P. tinctoria, and S. coronata var. insularis at concentrations of 1.33, 1.56, 0.82, and $3.37mg\;g^{-1}$ extract, respectively, indicating that quercetin contributed to the ARI activity of these extracts. In the samples in which quercetin was absent, other compounds may be responsible for their potent ARI activity. These results serve as a basis for further studies regarding the bioactive components responsible for the inhibitory effects of various flower extracts on AR activity.

송악산 주변 조간대 저서 대형무척추동물의 종다양성과 군집구조에 관한 연구 (Species Diversity and Community Structure of Macrobenthic Invertebrate Inhabiting the Intertidal Zone near Songacksan Area, Jeju Island)

  • 2000년 6월부터 5월까지 제주남부연안 송악산주변 지역 조간대 3개 지역 9개 지점에 대한 조간대 저서무척추동물의 공간적인 수직분포와 군집유형에 관하여 연구하였으며 그 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 조사기간 중 조사구역 3개 지역 조간대에서 서식하는 저저무척추동물은 총 6문, 12강, 25목, 50과, 104종이었다. 분류군별 출현종을 보면 연체동물이 3강, 69종(66.3%), 절지동물 3강, 17종 (16.3%) 이었다. 조간대의 구역별 종다양성에서는 하부조간대구역으로 내려갈수록 높았으며, 조사지점별 다양성에서는 뚜렷한 차이가 없었다. 조간대 구역별 우점종의 수직분포는 상부조간대의 좁쌀무늬총알고둥 (N. exigua), 총알고둥 (L. brevicula), 거북손 (P. mitella mitella), 갈고 둥 (N. japonica), 중부조간대는 각시고둥 (M. neritoides), 눈알고둥 (L. coronata corensis), 갈고둥 (N. japonica) 그리고 하부 조간대구역은 배무래기 (N. schrenckii), 애기밤고둥 (O. nigerrimusa), 대수리 (P. clavigera), 밤고둥 (C. argyrostoma lischkei)의 순이었다. 9개 지점간 유사도는 높았으며 2개 그룹으로 나눌 수 있었는데 St. 1, St, 2, St. 4, St. 8, St. 9가 한 그룹, St. 3, St. 5, St. 6, St. 7이 같은 그룹이었으나 두 그룹간 차이는 크지 않았다.
