Fifteen herbs used in oral medicine were extracted in ethanol and screened for tooth whitening effect, radical scavenging activity, inhibition of inducible nitric oxide synthase activity and anti-bacterial activity on Streptoccocus mutans. The results are as followed: 1. The tooth whitening effect of toothpaste containing 1 $\%$ ethanol extracts of 15 herbs was tested in brushing method using artificially stained HAT tablet and bovine tooth specimens. Toothpaste containing 1$\%$ of Vucia unijuga, Illicium verum, Angelica dahurica and Piper longum extracts showed tooth whitening effects on both HAT tablet and bovine tooth specimens. But the others did not show a considerable activity. 2. The antioxidant activity of ethanol extracts of 15 herbs was tested using the method of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) reactivity. Two ethanol extracts of Cimicifuga heracleifolia and Phyllostachys nigra var. henonis were found to be the most effective on radical scavenging activity. C. heracleifolia and P. nigra var. henonis extracts removed 86$\%$ and 81 $\%$ of DPPH radical at 0.01$\%$, compared with butylated hydroxy toluene as positive control. 3. The inhibition activity of ethanol extracts on nitrate production In RAW264.7 cell stimulated by lipopolysacchride was tested using the Griess reagent. But all extracts did not inhibit nitrate production. 4. The antibacterial activity on Streptoccocus mutans was tested by paper disk method. But no one extract showed any anti - bacterial activity.
Statement of problem : Recently, in attempts to reinforce the acrylic resin and to reduce the polymerization shrinkage, it has been reported that adding vinyloligo-silsesquioxane (vinyl-POSS) to PMMA significantly compensates for polymerization shrinkage and somewhat increases the fracture resistance. Purpose : There haven't been any studies on abrasion that can affect the adaptation of the denture in long-term use. In this study abrasion resistance was compared between acrylic resin with vinyl-POSS and commercialized acrylic resin for denture base. In addition, the difference in abrasion resistance according to molding methods was compared. Material and method : Using PaladentR 20 including vinyl-POSS. PaladentR 20, Lucitone 199R, SR IvocapR, denture bases were fabricated using compression molding technique and continuous-pressure injection technique. Surface hardness and abrasion were measured for each group, and the worn surfaces were observed under a scanning electron microscope. Results : 1. When surface hardness was measured for each material and molding technique, there was no statistically significant difference among the materials. (p<0.05) 2. When same denture base material and molding technique were used, the abrasion due to toothpaste solution was 5 times as severe as the abrasion due to soap solution. 3, When toothpaste solution was used, the abrasion decreased in the order of PaladentR20, PaladentR 20 including vinyl-POSS, SR IvocapR, and Lucitone 199R. However statistically significant difference was seen only among PaladentR 20, SR IvocapR, and Lucitone 199R. (p<0.05). 4. When soap solution was used, the abrasion was more severe in PaladentR 20 and including vinyl-POSS PaladentR 20 groups than in SR IvocapR and Lucitone 199R groups. (p<0.05). Conclusion : Addition of vinyl-POSS doesn't improve the abrasion resistance, and the abrasion resistance was similar to those of existing materials. Additional studies under different conditions are needed. For clinical application of vinyl-POSS, further investigations with different requirements and conditions are necessary.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the toothbrushing practice behavior of preschool children by observing children's actual toothbrushing behavior and further to offer basic data available for being reflected in direction and goal establishment of the systematic and organized oral health education in consideration of individual characteristic. Methods : It targeted 225 preschool children from May 6, 2010 to June 8, and analyzed by having the survey results of totally 208 people, except 17 who are noncooperative with the observation survey. As for the collected materials, it carried out frequency analysis and $x^2$-test in order to grasp subjects' general characteristics and toothbrushing practice behaviors and to examine correlation, by using SPSS 12.0 for window. Results : 1. A grasp of toothbrush was indicated 47.1% for "proper" and 52.9% for "improper." The position of holding a toothbrush was indicated to be the highest with 59.6% for "the center in grip." 2. Toothpaste amount was indicated to be 49.0% for" tip in toothbrush, "followed by 38.9% for "half in toothbrush" and 12% for "every side of toothbrush" in order. Significant difference was shown according to age($x^2$=19.125. p<.05). 3. Average toothbrushing time per once was surveyed to be $106{\pm}56$ seconds. 4. As for a toothbrushing method by region, the labial and the baccal surface were indicated to be horizontal scrub with 63% and fones method 11.5%. Significant difference was shown according to gender($x^2$=10.275. p<.05). The anterior lingual surface wasn't washed with 72.6%. Significant difference was shown according to appearance of education($x^2$=6.056. p<.05). 5. A case of requiring exchange because of being widened toothbrush was indicated to be 59.2%. The toothbrush replacement in the highest ratio was needed in kindergarten teachers. Conclusions : The actual toothbrushing practice attitude of preschool children was surveyed to be not right as a whole such as toothbrushing time, toothbrushing method, toothpaste amount, and replacement of toothbrush. Accordingly, the oral health education will need to be performed in order for a change into positive attitude and for improvement in practice level. In addition, it is considered to be likely necessary for development in substantial oral health educational program available for enhancing knowledge level of oral health care in mothers and kindergarten teachers.
Since many reports for the influence of the essential oils on the oral microorganism were presented, it is important to use the essential oils in clinical field. At the present day which emphasized the quality of life, oral malodor is one of the serious problems, so we need to try to decrease of oral malodor. This study was designed to make on evidence of the effect of essential oils to oral malodor clinically and to develop on effective treatment for oral malodor by using the dental paste which contains essential oils. 40 dental students volunteered to participate in this study and double blind test was used. At the beginning, all subjects were measured their morning malodor prior to this experiment, at the 3cm posterior to their incisal edge of the oral cavity by Halimeter(Interscan Co. Chatsworth, CA). After that we divided the students in half into two groups A and B. We have supplied different tooth pastes, dental paste A and B, to two groups respectively. The dental paste B contained essential oils which are tea tree, lemon and peppermint. All students used different tooth pastes everyday for 3 weeks. And all students were measured their morning malodor every week with the same method by using Halimeter. This study was resulted that ; 1. The dental paste which contains essential oils has continuously decreased the morning malodor during the whole period of experiments. 2. The number of students with increase in their morning malodor was generally decreased in the group B who used the toothpaste which contains essential oils, compared with the group A who used the toothpaste which didn't contain essential oils on the 2nd and 3rd week of the experiment. 3. In the group B, the average data on increasing rate of morning malodor was less than in the group A. 4. In the 2nd and 3rd week of the experiment, the data on the rate of morning malodor of the group B was generally decreased continuously compared with the group A. These results have statistically significance under 95% confidence interval of the difference.(p$\leq$0.05) As the result, the toothpaste which was containing essential oils was effective in decreasing the morning malodor.
Objectives: To compare and evaluate the degree of abrasion of the denture base resin according to the type of denture cleansers. Methods: Denture base resin specimens were prepared and dried. The resin specimens were installed in the automatic brushing machine so that the toothbrush weighed 200 g. The brushing was performed 1,000 times each, a total of 10,000 times using (1) distilled water (DW), (2) non-abrasive cleanser (NAC), and (3) toothpaste (TP), respectively. Thirty specimens were allocated for each group. The thickness of abrasion by brushing was calculated by converting the weight of the specimen. Results: In all DW, NAC, and TP groups, significant differences were found in the average amount of abrasion of the resin specimen due to 1,000 to 10,000 brushings (p<0.001). The average abrasion amount of the resin specimen due to brushing 10,000 times was 2.31±1.20 ㎛ in DW group, 2.52±0.25 ㎛ in NAC group, 6.50±0.60 ㎛ in TP group, and the amount of abrasion in the TP group was statistically significant compared to other groups (p<0.001). Conclusions: The use of TP is not recommended as a method for maintaining the longevity of dentures and for oral health, and NAC was considered to be possible to be used as a denture cleanser because it had a similar amount of abrasion of that of DW.
Objectives : This study was conducted to improve oral heath behaviour of child by analyzing child's mother oral health behaviour. Methods : A total of 361(95.0%) 3-year-old-child's mothers who sent their child to child care institution in Daegu were analyzed from October 1, 2009 to October 31, 2009. Results : 1. In relation to general nature and experience on oral health education of child's mother, mother with higher monthly income, over than graduation from university and professional job had high oral health education experience, which was statistically related(p<0.01)(p<0.001). 2. In the case of mother with oral health education experience, this mother had higher dental clinic visit for 1 year, higher experience on scaling, higher good food preference for teeth health and higher use of floss, which was statistically related(p<0.05)(p<0.01). 3. Regarding child's oral management behaviour by mother's oral health importance, in the case that oral health was important, flouride toothpaste use, restriction on cavity inducting food and toothbrushing before sleep were higher only, which was statistically related(p<0.05)(p<0.001). Conclusion : In case of mother with oral health education experience, this mother had experience on dental clinic visit for prevention of cavity, dental clinic visit for treatment and restriction on food in which their child's oral health behaviour were satisfactory, which was statistically related.
