This study was conducted to analyze the cost effectiveness in line with total phosphorus standard enforcement of public sewage treatment facilities. The additional cost for the total phosphorus removal process was calculated to analyze the cost effectiveness of the advanced water purification process. The analysis results showed that the T-P removal by coagulation sedimentation was more efficient than the advanced water purification facilities in terms of facilities investment cost, and if the coagulation filteration was used for T-P removal, the activated carbon process among the advanced water purification techniques was more efficient in terms of facilities investment cost. In this study, the effects of the T-P removal process that will be additionally introduced according to the tightening of the effluent T-P standard were analyzed within a limit. The actual benefits of improved T-P concentration in the water source will provide diverse values, including the leisure water, environment improvement water, eco-system in the water source and industrial water, in addition to the advanced water purification.
Pilot-scale coagulation and sedimentation processes were operated to investigate the T-P (Total phosphorus) removal efficiency. A multiple regression model was also derived to predict the water quality improvement effect with river water characteristics. The inflow rates for the pilot-scale facility were 157-576 m3/day, and the coagulant doses were in the range of 13.7-58.5 mg/L (average 38.9 mg/L) for PAC (Poly alum chloride) and 16.5-62.1 mg/L (average 36.0 mg/L) for alum. The results found that the influent BOD (Biochemical oxygen demand) and T-P concentrations were 4.9 mg/L and 0.115 mg/L, and the removal efficiencies were 52.7% and 59.4%, respectively. T-P removal efficiencies on wet weather days were higher by 10% than dry weather days because influent solids influenced T-P's coagulation process. The pH of river water was 6.9-7.8, and the average pH was 7.3. Although the pH variation was not significant, the trend showed that the treatment efficiency of T-P and PO4-P removal increased. Thus, the pH range considered in this study seems to be appropriate for the coagulation process, which is essential for phosphorous removal. The T-P removal efficiencies were 19.6-93.3% (average 59.2%) for PAC and 16.4-98.5%(average 55.9%) for alum; thus, both coagulants showed similar results. Furthermore, the average coagulant doses were similar at 42.4 mg/L for PAC and 41.3 mg/L for alum. When the T-P concentration of the effluent was compared by the [Al]/[P] ratio, the phosphorus concentration of the treated water decreased with an increasing [Al]/[P] ratio, and the lowest T-P concentration range appeared at the [Al]/[P] ratio of 10-30. A seasonal multiple regression analysis equations were derived from the relationships between 10 independent and dependent variables (T-P concentration of effluent). This study could help lake water quality maintenance, reduce eutrophication, and improve direction settings for urban planning, especially plans related to developing waterfront cities.

The aim of this study was to investigate the removal of fluoride using thermally treated pyrophyllite as adsorbent. Sorption experiments were conducted under batch conditions to examine the effects of adsorbent dose, reaction time, initial fluoride concentration and solution pH on fluoride removal. In the experiments, the pyrophyllite thermally treated at different temperatures [untreated (P-U), $400^{\circ}C$ (P-400), $600^{\circ}C$ (P-600)] were used. Results showed that the adsorption capacity was in the order of P-400 > P-U > P-600. The XRD analysis indicated that both P-U and P-400 were composed of quartz, dickite and pyrophyllite while P-600 was quartz. The BET analysis showed that the specific surface area was in the order of P-600 > P-400 > P-U. Kinetic data showed that fluoride sorption to P-400 arrived at equilibrium around 24 h. Equilibrium test demonstrated that the maximum sorption capacity of P-400 was 0.957 mg/g. In addition, fluoride removal by P-400 was not sensitive to solution pH between 4 and 10. However, fluoride removal decreased considerably at highly acidic (pH < 4) and alkaline (pH > 10) conditions. This study demonstrates that pyrophyllite could be used as a low-cost adsorbent for fluoride removal from aqueous solution.
This research was conducted at the constructed wetland in Goheung reclaimed land, and water quality components were measured at the 12 points in 15 March 2008 and 10 January 2009, respectively. Temperature, pH, DO, EC and salinity components were measured at the field, and TOC, Cl-, COD, TSS, T-P and TN components were analyzed laboratory. Concentrations of field measured components at inflow points were higher than in constructed wetland. TOC concentration ratio of inflow water to constructed wetland water was higher in January, and Cl concentration ratio of it was higher in March. And, COD concentration ratio of it were 1.37 for March and 1.49 for January, respectively. T-P and T-N concentration ratios of it at inflow points were higher 3 times than in constructed wetland. Constructed wetland attenuated concentration of contaminated components inflow to it. Removal efficiencies of Cl-, T-P and T-N components in inflow water were high at the constructed wetland. removal efficiencies of Cl component were 83% for 1st monitoring and 76% for 2nd monitoring, this removal efficiency be caused by dilution effect of constructed wetland. removal efficiencies of T-P component were 67% for 1st monitoring and 69% for 2nd monitoring, and they of T-N component were 100% for 1st monitoring and 95% for 2nd monitoring. Abnormal removal efficiency of T-N component is caused that nitrogen in inflow water was a little. Removal efficiency of T-P component was higher in January, and T-N component was higher in March. This is caused by environmental difference between growing season and winter.

The effects of magnesium and calcium ions on phosphorus removal by aluminium coagulation were investigated with various jar tests using settled raw sewage. Maximum TP (total phosphate) removal occurred at pH around 5~6 with aluminium coagulation, and it decreased above pH 6. TP and $H_nPO_4^{n-3}$ removal efficiencies, however, were kept above 95% at pH above 6 by adding the divalent metallic ions like magnesium or calcium ions on aluminium coagulation process. At molar ratio of Al/P ($Al^{3+}/H_nPO_4^{n-3}$) above 3, TP removal efficiency was as high as 80%, and residual TP less than 0.2 mg/L occurred at Al/P ratio above 6. TP removal efficiency was improved by adding magnesium or calcium ions and the optimum $Al^{3+}/Mg^{2+}$ and $Al^{3+}/Ca^{2+}$ ratios were about 2. The required dose of aluminium coagulant was reduced for equivalent amount of TP removal by adding magnesium or calcium ions, as a result sludge generation was also reduced.
FeS, as a natural reduced iron mineral, has been recognized to be a viable reactive material for As(III) sequestration in natural and engineered systems. In this study, FeS-coated sand packed columns were tested to evaluate the As(III) removal capacities under anaerobic conditions at pH 5, 7 and 9. The column obtained As(III) removal capacity was then compared with the capacity result obtained from batch reactors. In the comparison, two different approaches were used. The first approach was used the total As(III) removal capacity which method was proved to be useful for interpreting pH 5 system. The second approach was used to consider sorption non-linearity and proved to be useful for interpreting the pH 9. The results demonstrated that a mechanistic understanding of the different removal processes at different pH conditions is important to interpret the column experimental results. At pH 5, where the precipitation of arsenic sulfide plays the major role in the removal of arsenic, the column shows a greater removal efficiency than the batch system due to the continuous dissolution of sulfide and precipitation of arsenic sulfide. At pH 9, where adsorption mainly governs the arsenic removal, the sorption nonlinearity should be considered in the estimation of the column capacity. This study highlighted the importance of understanding reaction mechanism to predict column performance using batch-obtained experimental results.
Objectives: Based on the strengths of augmented reality (AR), this study aimed to determine the dental plaque removal efficiency of a guided brushing program in children. Methods: This randomized, controlled, double-blind crossover clinical trial evaluated the plaque removal rate after regular brushing versus AR-based guided toothbrushing in 20 children aged 5-12 years. Results: Overall, the dental plaque removal efficiency of AR-based brushing was superior to that of regular brushing (p<0.05). When classified in detail, no significant difference was noted in the plaque removal rate between the two brushing methods in the anterior region (p=0.056), whereas a significant difference in the plaque removal rate was observed in the posterior region (p<0.05). Conclusions: Based on these results, the efficacy of dental plaque removal for brushing using an AR-based smartphone application was confirmed; thus, this can be used for oral health education incorporating ICT technology in the future.

The effect of the physical parameters in the reactor (aeration depth, bubble size, and surface area) and the alkalinity of the solution on the ammonia stripping by bubbling were evaluated. When an airflow of 30 L/min was bubbled below the solution surface in the range 6-53 cm, the ammonia removal rate were observed to be the same regardless of the bubbling depths. At pH 10.0 and a temperature of $30^{\circ}C$, the average rate constant and the standard deviation were $0.178h^{-1}$ and 0.004. No appreciable changes in the ammonia removal rate were also observed with varying the bubble size and the air-contacting surface area. Alkalinity of the solution was found to affect the ammonia removal rate indirectly. This is expected because the pH of the solution would vary with dissolution of gaseous $CO_2$ by air bubbling. The real wastewaters from landfill site and domestic wastewater treatment plant were tested. In the case of domestic wastewater (pH = 7.1, alkalinity = 75 mg/L), the ammonia removal rate was poor even with the control of pH to 9.3. The raw landfill leachate (pH = 8.0, alkalinity = 6,525 mg/L), however, showed the appreciable removal rate with increasing pH during aeration. When the initial pH of the leachate was adjusted 9.4, the removal rate was significantly increased without changing the pH during aeration.
The purpose of this study was to find the optimum condition of the high removal efficiency of water pollutant as sewage treatment technology using a filtering bed charged with porous sintering-pellet which was planted with hydrophytes. Experiment was carried out by changing concentration of water pollutants(COD, T-N, T-P), kind of hydrophyte, kinds of filtering material and size, and HRT. The result of removal efficiency was obtained as following: COD removal 73.8~87.1% for input concentration range of 50~450mg/L, T-N removal 61.3~77.3% for input concentration range of 7~124mg/L, T-P removal 89.5~99.1% for input concentration ranger of 3~27mg/L. In a comparative experiment of three kinds of hydrophyte(Iris pseudoacorus, Phragmites communis $T_{RIN}$., Oenanthe javanica Dc.), the best removal efficiency of COD and T-N was gained with Iris pse-udoacorus, and Phragmites communis $T_{RIN}$ showed better result than two hydrophytes for the removal efficiency of T-P. In a comparative experiment of four kinds of filtering-materials, the removal efficiencies were in the order of porous sintering-pellet, gravel, nonused-tire and nonused-concrete. It was found that for the porous sintering-pellet, the smaller its diameter, the better its result. In the filtering bed in which was charged with porous sintering-pellets of 5mm diameter and planted with Iris pseudoacorus, the removal efficiency of COD, T-N and T-P were over 80%, 70% and 90% under the concentration of COD 250mg/L, T-N 70mg/L and T-P 15mg/L for 24hrs treatment. Thus, we concluded that a filtering bed charged with porous sintering-pellet and planted with hydrophytes will be suitable for treatment of sewage water as a pro-natural treatment technology.

In order to evaluate the applicability of steel mill slag as a AMD (Acid Mine Drainage) neutralizer and to compare capacity of slag with that of limestone lab scale experiments were conducted. The fixed treatment experiments of AMD with slag and limestone separately for 24 hours under the stagnant condition showed that slag has higher capacity of pH increase and removal of Fe. Al and other trace elements. During the 10 days continuous step experiment the pH has been maintained and any decrease in the removal capacity of Fe and Al has not bun observed. In the trace element removal experiment slag showed higher capacity for removal of Ni, Co. Cu and Zn than limestone. The removal of trace element was more effective in AMD than in distilled water that the pH was adjusted to the same level of AMD (synthetic acid solution). It means that Fe and Al in AMD adsorbed trace elements during or after precipitation as oxide forms. In the size effect experiment, the slag of the smaller size with larger specific surface area exhibited higher capacity of pH increase and removal efficiencies of Fe. Al and other trace elements.
