  • Dictyostelid cellular slime molds were isolated from soils and harks of the subtropical forest of Torreya nucifera in Cheju island. The results were as follows: Polysphondylium pallidum,Dictyostelium purpureum, D. mucoroides, D. aureo-stipes var. aureo-stipes, D. flavidum, D. miniutum, P.violaceu m, D. monocrhasioides. D. brefeldianum, D. polvcephalum. D. areum var. areum, P. tenuissimum, D. fasciculatum. In this forest, P. pallidum and D. purpureum were occurred dominantly, and D. mucoroides and D. aureo-stipes var, aureo-stipes were the second dominant. It was distinguished that D. purpureum was much more cornmonly found than the other forests. Cellular slime molds from the barks of the tree heights of 1,3 and 5m were occured 7, 3 and 2 species respectively. Torreya fruit extract affected on the growth of D. aureo-stipes var. aureo-stipes and D. flavidum but not on D. purpureum and D. mucoroides. Key words: Cellular slime mold, Torreya forest, Torreya fruit extract.

  • Biomass, tissue (foliage, stem. and root) nutrient concentration, and nutrient use efficiency (NUE) were determined for 1-year-old Pinus densiflora, Larix leptolepis and Betula platyphvlla var. japonica seedlings in a greenhouse under nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fertilization treatments. There were no consistent patterns in the effect of fertilization on seedling growth, however, in most cases the addition of N and P had no stimulating effect on biomass. In general, seedling tissue N and P concentrations increased after fertilization. It appeared that fertilization induced luxury nutrient consumption because uptake was increased without altering biomass. The NUE. calculated as the ratio between total above and belowground production and nutrient content in seedlings, decreased with increasing N and P supply for P. densiflora and B. platyphylla var. japonica while that for L. leptolepisthe did not change. B. platyphylla var. japonica had the highest NUE, L. leptolepis the lowest, with P. densiflora having the intermediate NUE.

  • Dictyostelids cellular slime molds were isolated from the soils of Gokneung and Anyang streamside in Korea. The fifteen species including two undescrihed species were identified. These were as follows ; Dictyostelium macrocephalurn D. sphaerocephalum, D. aureum var. aureum, D.mucoroides, D. minutum, Polyspondyium pallidum. D. giganteum, P. violaceum. D. purpureum. D.brefeldianum, D. flavidum, D. mucoroides var. storoniferum, D. septentrionalis, D. aureum var. luteolum,D. aureo-stipes var. aureo-stipes. D. macrocephalum was the dominant species. and D. sphaerocephalum. D. aureum var. avreum were relatively common. D. mucoroides var. storoniferum, D. septentrionalis were the undescrihed species in Korea. In the soils of streamside, dominant species was shifted by D. macrosephalum, D. sphaerocephalum. which were rare in the forest soils. The total clones per gram of streamside soils were greater than that of forest soils, whereas the number of species in streamside was smaller than the in forest soils. As a result, the ratio of the number of clones to species was very high in the soils of streamside, Environmental factors of soil pH, water content, organic content, total nitrogen and total phosphorus made a effect differently on the cellular slime molds community. Key words: Cellular slime molds, D. macrocephalum, D. sphaerocephalum, Shift of dominant species, Environmental factors.

  • The achene morphology of 21 taxa of Persicaria sect. Cephalophilon including the related taxa of Koenigia (Polygonaceae) was examined using stereo microscopy and scanning electron microscopy to evaluate its diagnostic values and taxonomic implications. The outlines of achene were narrowly ovoid to broadly ovoid in general, and elliptic achenes were observed in Koenigia taxa, with the achene shape being biconvex or trigonous. The size of the P. sect. Cephalophilon taxa ranged from $0.93-3.55{\times}0.80-2.31mm$ and the size of examined Koenigia taxa ranged from $1.10-1.84{\times}0.79-1.02mm$. The smallest achenes in P. sect. Cephalophilon were observed in P. humilis and the largest achenes were found in P. chinensis var. chinensis. Furthermore, infraspecific taxa of P. chinensis had relatively large achenes compared to other taxa within the section. Most taxa of P. sect. Cephalophilon had dull achenes, while four taxa had glossy achenes (P. capitata, P. runcinata var. runcinata, P. runcinata var. sinensis, and P. sinuata). Four types of surface patterns (smooth, tubercles, small pits, and irregular ridge) were observed, and the tubercles were divided into two subtypes according to the grouping and distribution pattern. The achene morphology of P. sect. Cephalophilon is described and compared, and its taxonomic implications are also discussed.

  • Cytological observations in the seven varieties of Juniperus chinensis L. showed three varieties (J. chinensis var. procumbens, J. chinensis var. kaizuka and J. chinensi.s var. aureo-variegata) were tetraploid with chromosome number, 2n=44, and rest of four varieties (J. chinensis var. horizontalis, J. chinensis var. sargentii, J. chinensis var. gtobosa and J. chinensis var. aureo-globosa) to be diploid, 2n=22. Chromosome configuration and behavior in the meiosis of P.M.C. of three tetraploids appeared to be slightly irregular. These results suggest that triploid tree can be artificially produced with these specific clones.
