  • Purpose: This study tries to comprehend older adults' perspectives of community supports and health services in a South Korean city and identify important sociodemographic and health characteristics that affect their perspectives. Methods: 166 older adults were involved in this cross-sectional study. Questions on background characteristics and community supports and health services criteria (categorized as service accessibility, offer of services, voluntary support, or emergency care planning) based upon the WHO's Age-Friendly Cities Guide were used. The data were analyzed using paired and independent t-tests, one-way ANOVA, and hierarchical multiple regression analyses. Results: emergency care planning was rated as the most important by the participants (mean age=76.24 years, 22.9% male), while its current level of performance was lowly appraised (p<.001). The rated importance for each category differed based on individual characteristics. Depression (p=.016), older age (p=.012), and restricted network type (p=.039) were significantly related to ascribing a higher degree of importance to community services. Conclusion: Community initiatives are warranted to optimize emergency care for older adults. This planning must be based on the unique characteristics of older adults in coordination with supportive resources. In addition, comprehensive assessments are warranted before implementing action plans to ensure that the multi-dimensional problems of older adults are incorporated.

  • The primary purpose of this research is to understand those elements that define heavy metals contamination and to propose a novel assessment method based on principal component analysis (PCA) in the Yangping River region of Lingbao City, China. This paper makes detailed calculations regarding such factors the single-factor assessment ($P_i$) and Nemerow's multi-factor index ($P_N$) of heavy metals found in the surface water of the Yangping River. The maximum values of $P_i$ (Cd) and $P_i$ (Pb) were determined to be 892.000 and 113.800 respectively. The maximum value of $P_N$ was calculated to be 639.836. The results of Pearson's correlation analysis, hierarchical cluster analysis, and PCA indicated heavy metal groupings as follows: Cu, Pb, Zn and As, Hg, Cd. The PCA-based pollution index ($P_{an}$) of samplings was subsequently calculated. The relative coefficient square was valued at 0.996 between $P_{an}$ and $P_N$, which indicated that $P_{an}$ is able to serve as a new heavy metal pollution index; not only this index able to eliminate the influence of the maximum value of $P_i$, but further, this index contains the principal component elements needed to evaluate heavy metal pollution levels.

  • This study was undertaken to examine the effects of social support, as well as avoidance coping, depression and suicidal ideation, of the elderly over 65 years, in G city. This was a descriptive survey study, enrolling 482 subjects from 9 elderly schools in G city, from October 31, 2019 to 1. Data collected were analyzed with t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients and multiple regression, using the SPSS WIN 24.0 program. The average score of social support was 5.71±1.11, avoidance coping style 12.41±3.45, depression 6.33±2.77, and suicidal ideation 6.17±1.87. Suicidal ideation (r=0.292, p<0.001) positively correlated with avoidance coping, and negatively correlated with gender (r=-0.02, p=0.018), number of family (r=-0.12, p=0.008), social support (r=-0.19, p<0.001), and depression (r=-0.24, p<0.001). Results of regression indicated that gender, social support, avoidance coping style, and depression explained 12.8% of variance in suicidal ideation. Therefore, our results indicate the necessity to develop a support program that improves the social support, and addresses avoidance coping style, depression and suicidal ideation, thereby helping to reduce negative thinking amongst the community of seniors aged over 65 years.
