  • The following results were obtained from the experiment on the oyster spatfall, Crassostrea gigas by means of the rack method in YonghoBay, on the southern coast of Korea, from June to August in 1962 and 1963. 1. The Outside of shells as a collector showed better result than inside in numbers of attached oyster spats. 2. The horizontal type of the rack was more efficient for spatfall than the typical type of the rack. 3. The mode variance, in shell height, were shown as 21-25mm and 26-30mm, and the variance of range was 13.0-53.0mm for 77 days. 4. The optimum spat-fall season was from August 17 to 19 and 24 to 27, and spat of the oyster were attached in number of 7 per collector each day. 5. The optimum exposure time in spatfall was 4 hours. 6, The average water temperature and specific gravity, during the spawning season, was $25.98^{\circ}C$ and 0.1871, respectively.

Growth and Carrying Capacity of Pacific Oyster, Crassostrea gigas, in Kamak Bay, Korea (가막만 양식 참굴의 성장과 환경용량 추정에 대한 연구)

  • Growth of Pacific oystey, Crassostrea gigas, in Kamak Bay, Korea was modeled using Von Bertalanffy growth function, seasonal Von Bertalanffy growth function and generalized growth equation of Schnute and Richards' growth model, based on shell length and wet weight frequency data of 9208 oysters. Carrying capacity in the oyster culture ground was also estimated using Schaefer's and Fox's surplus production model. The present results suggest that the generalized growth equation of Schnute and Richards' model is fitter to describe the length growth pattern of C. gigas than Von Bertalanffy growth functions. This results also suggest that the current number of culture facility per unit area in 2000 is similar to the number of facility that produces the maximum production of oyster per unit area.

  • We showed the result that an appreciable difference of secondary structures in the intracrystlline protein was observed between Normal and Deform shells. In order to understand the exact secondary structure of proteins, we investigated the changes in protein conformation from the specific layers via Fourier Self-Deconvolution(FSD) techniques, using ATR(Attenuated Total Reflection) information.

  • In this study, to increase removal efficiency of traditional electrokinetic treatment and to reduce contaminant load of wastewater that discharged through cathode compartment, enhanced electrode compartments were investigated. Hydroxide precipitation near the cathode electrode that encounter during traditional electrokinetic treatment were prevented by enhanced electrokinetic remediation test with newly invented electrode compartment. And heavy metal concentration in wastewater showed 0 ppm thus, additive post-treatment cost were not needed.

  • 국내 해안에는 양식업에서 부산물로 다량 발생되는 굴, 홍합, 대합 등의 패각들이 해안에 야적되어 연안어장의 오염, 공유수면 관리상의 지장, 자연경관의 훼손 및 보건 위생상의 문제 등으로 환경오염을 초래하고 있다(정종현 등, 1998). 현재 폐 패각의 총발생량은 355,000톤 정도이며, 이 중 종묘채묘용으로 재사용되는 양을 제외하면, 토지개량제로서의 이용 등을 포함한 재활용율은 약 30%정도로 낮은 실정이다.   • This study was investigated the environment of waste shells such as oyster, cockle and paphia on southern shore in korea and established the recycling method to prevent the environmental pollution, etc. The waste shells were reclaimed at public shore illegally or leaved on the surroundings of shore. The origin mechanism, XRD and TG-DTA analyses were performed to effective recycling of waste shells, and the optimal recycling method was preparation of the calcium carbonate. In this work, calcium carbonate and lime fertilizer of granular shape were prepared using the waste shell.

  • Antimicrobial powder was made by exchanging silver ion on calcined oyster shell. On the purpose of application to water clarifier, bail-type media mixed with antimicrobial powder and $0{\sim}30%$ white kaoline were made. The sterilization effect, pore size distribution and zeta potential was tested to indicate the condition for the media of water clarifier. From these tests, it was confirmed that this media have an excellent sterilization power on $G^-\;and\;G^+$ germs. As the concentration of the exchanged silver ion increased, the surface charge density of the anions on the surface of the media also increased. The surface pore size decreased with the concentration of silver ion and 20% more white kaoline ratio. Consequently, mixing ratio of white kaoline would appear to indicate the optimun condition as media have sterilization power.

  • A preliminary in vitro acid neutralizing capacity test of twelve traditional Ayurvedic antacids were performed in this study. Five traditional preparations of ash of conch shell, ash of oyster, ash of pearl, limestone, and ash of cowrie showed high acid neutralizing capacity similar to standard antacid combination of $Al(OH)_3\;and\;Mg(OH)_2$. Among these the ash of conch shell found the highest acid neutralizing capacity. The ash of tamarind and ash of Achyranthus aspera showed moderate acid neutralizing capacity. The acid neutralizing capacity of red ochre; ash of iron; mixture of niter, alum and ammonium chloride; saltpeter; and ash of mica found below the USP 23 limit.

Reproductive Cycle and Induced Sexual Maturation of the Pacific Oyster, Crassostrea gigas (참굴, Crassostrea gigas의 생식주기와 성 성숙 유도)

  • Reproductive cycle, the condition index, sex ratio of the Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas were investigated by histological and morphometric data. The specimens were collected in the two oyster farms of Geoje and Namhae, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea, from November 1995 to October 1996. Growth of shell length in two regions was similar, but growth of total weight of the oyster in Namhae was faster than that in Geoje oyster farm. The spawning periods in female and male clams were from July to October in Geoje and from June to October in Namhae oyster farm. Ripe oocytes were approximately 50 m in diameter. The reproductive cycle of in females and males in Geoje and Namhae oyster farms can be divided into five successive stages: early developing, late developing, ripe, partially spawned and spent/inactive. Monthly changes in gonad developmental phases showed somewhat different patterns between female and male clams except for the spawning period. On the whole, however, monthly changes in the gonad developmental phases showed a similar pattern in the same sex. The sex ratios of females to males in Geoje and Namhae oyster farms were not significantly different from a 1:1 sex ratio ($x^2$ = 0.55 (p > 0.05) in Geoje and $x^2$ = 0.27 ( p > 0.05) in Namhae). Artificial induction of maturation by heating of adult oysters (two-year-old) was investigated from 17 January to 18 March in 1996. Maturity at the fixed water temperature group of $20^{\circ}C$ was 80%, it showed the highest maturity of experimental groups cultured for five weeks. The survival (%) of Crassostrea gigas in the raised water temperature experimental groups (15, 20, $25^{\circ}C$) were over 98.5%, as similar to the control group (100%). But, the survival of C. gigas in the fixed water temperature experimental groups (15, 20, 25, $30^{\circ}C$) were decreased with the increase of the water temperatures. In the fixed water temperature experimental group of $30^{\circ}C$, the survival was 51.1%. Base on these results, the fixed water temperature of $20^{\circ}C$ was the best condition for artificial induction of sexual maturation.
