  • A procedure for spectrophotometric determination of traces of phosphorus(P) in high-purity trichlorosilane(TCS) is proposed using an adsorptive separation. $PCl_3$, which is a dominant P impurity within TCS, is first oxidized by oxygen to a stable form as $POCl_3$. $AlCl_3$ is selected as an adsorbent which forms a thermally stable complex with $POCl_3$ in TCS and can be well dissolved in aqueous ethanol solution. The proposed adsorptive separation method is free from the formation of silica gel and gas bubbles during the colorimetric analysis of TCS. The method reveals that the P concentration in a semiconductor-grade TCS is 5.32 ${\mi}g/l$ within the standard deviation of ${\pm}$ 17%. On the other hand, the P concentration of the purified TCS which is separated from the $AlCl_3$${\cdot}$$POCl_3$ complex is reduced to be less than 0.15 ${\mi}g/l$, showing the efficient applicability of $AlCl_3$ to the wet chemical analysis. The proposed method is also tested to verify the effectiveness of other well-known adsorbents.

  • Algal blooms in lakes are one of major environmental issues in Korea. A three-dimensional, hydrodynamic and water quality model was developed and tested in Lake Euiam to assess the performance and limitations of numerical modeling with multiple algal groups using field data commonly collected for algal management. In this study, EFDC was adopted as the basic model framework. Simulated vertical profiles of water temperature, dissolved oxygen and nutrients monitored at five water quality monitoring stations from March to October 2013, which are closely related to algal dynamics simulation, showed good agreement with those of observed data. The overall spatio-temporal variations of three algal groups were reasonably simulated against the chlorophyll-a levels of those estimated from the limited monitoring data (chlorophyll-a level and cell numbers of algal species) with the RMSEs ranging from 2.6 to $17.5mg/m^3$. Also, note that $PO_4-P$ level in the water column was a key limiting factor controlling the growth of three algal groups during most of simulation period. However, the algal modeling results were not fully attainable to the levels of observation during short periods of time showing abrupt increase in algae throughout the lake. In particular, the green algae/cyanobacteria and diatom simulations were underestimated in late June to early July and early October, respectively. The results shows that better understanding of internal algal processes, neglected in most algal modeling studies, is necessary to predict the sudden algal blooms more accurately because the concentrations of external $PO_4-P$ and specific algal groups originated from the tributaries (mainly, dam water releases) during the periods were too low to fully capture the sharp rise of internal algal levels. In this respect, this study suggests that future modeling efforts should be focused on the quantification of internal cycling processes including vertical movement of algal species with respect to changes in environmental conditions to enhance the modeling performance on complex algal dynamics.

  • It is used water quality data that was measured at Pyeongchanggang real time monitoring stations in Namhan river. These characteristics were analyzed with the water qualify of rainy and nonrainy periods. TOC (Total Organic Carbon) data of rainy periods has correlation with discharge and shows high values of mean, maximum, and standard deviation. DO (Dissolved Oxygen) value of rainy periods is lower than those of nonrainy periods. Input data of the water quality forecasting models that they were constructed by neural network and neuro-fuzzy was chosen as the reasonable data, and water qualify forecasting models were applied. LMNN, MDNN, and ANFIS models have achieved the highest overall accuracy of TOC data. LMNN (Levenberg-Marquardt Neural Network) and MDNN (MoDular Neural Network) model which are applied for DO forecasting shows better results than ANFIS (Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System). MDNN model shows the lowest estimation error when using daily time, which is qualitative data trained with quantitative data. The observation of discharge and water quality are effective at same point as well as same time for real time management. But there are some of real time water quality monitoring stations far from the T/M water stage. Pyeongchanggang station is one of them. So discharge on Pyeongchanggang station was calculated by developed runoff neural network model, and the water quality forecasting model is linked to the runoff forecasting model. That linked model shows the improvement of waterquality forecasting.

  • In this study, the bacterial communities distributed in sea water of the whitening areas of Gangjeong and Seongsan, Jeju-do have been analysed using the PCR amplification of 16S rRNA to obtain fundamental data and information on relationship of the whitening phenomenon and microbial ecosystem. In Gangjeong, diverse bacteria such as Alcanivorax, Paracoccus, Damselae, Pseudomonas, Rhodowlum, Silicibacter, Suiftobacter, and Roseobacter have been found, and Alcanivorax was the most abundant clone. The most abundant clone from Seongsan was Pseudomonas, of which Pseudomonas tolaasii and Pseudomonas mandeli were most abundantly occurred in the frequency of approx44% and 24%, respectively. Approx4% of the bacterial clones closest to Verrucomicrobiales and other unidentified clones were also fecund in Seongsan, suggesting there is a great discrepancy between bacterial communities from the whitening areas of Seongsan and Gangjeong. The mean temperature, chlorine concentration, pH, and dissolved oxygen (DO) of the sea water of Gangieong and Seongsan in August of 2001 (sampling period) was $27^{\circ}C$~$27.5^{\circ}C$, 30.24~30.60%, pH 8.23~8.36,7 .20~7.28 mg/ι, suggesting other environmental factors except far the factors mentioned above might result in difference of bacterial communities distributed in both areas.

  • A column experiment was performed to investigate the influence of the sludge cake development on the riverbed and the hydraulic gradient imposed by the drawdown at the well on the filtrate quality in order to offer a guideline in the design and operation of the riverbed filtration. Results show that the sludge cake on the riverbed plays an important role in the removal of the organic matter. Under the conditions of this study the COD removal rate increased from 17% to 50% along with the sludge cake development, which was equivalent to the BCOD removal of 22% and 67%, respectively. The active removal of the organic matter took place in the sludge cake and the upper 40 cm of the riverbed. As the flow rate increased owing to the increase in the head difference imposed on the column, the slope of the COD profile near the column inlet decreased, however, the profiles converged in about 40 cm from the inlet. In 10 days of sludge cake formation the dissolved oxygen was depleted at the depth of 70 cm, which suggests the denitrification can take place beyond the depth. This depth was further reduced to $20{\sim}40\; cm$ as the sludge cake developed. From this study the removal of organic matter can be expected through the riverbed filtration even with the depth of as shallow as 3 m, which is frequently met in Korea, while the removal of nitrogen through denitrification is not expected to be active under the condition.

  • This study was aimed to analyze the water quality characteristics of the Hwapocheon Stream and to be utilized in the further related research. Water in the upper stream became a dammed pool due to the existence of 14 weirs, and pollutants such as both sewage and irrigation water were introduced into the mainstream passing through farming settlements and agricultural land. For these reasons, filamentous cyanobacteria (Oscillatoria sp.) bloomed at the bottom of the dammed pool. Also in the midstream and downstream, tributaries with high pollutant concentrations [e.g., Comocheon (T3) and Yongdeokcheon (T8)] were inflowed, and had a negative impact on water quality of the mainstream, especially nitrogen and phosphorus. In the Hwapocheon Stream, dissolved oxygen (DO) decreased, and suspended solid (SS) increased toward the downstream. The result showed that hydraulic retention time, SS, COD, and concentration of $NH_4{^+}$ were important water quality factors of the Hwapocheon Stream. The high concentration of benthic organic matter and rich in attached algae in the core of Hwapo-wetland were expected to give impact on the water quality of the mainstream. In the spatial manner, water quality showed increasing trend in the weir zone, and it was constant or decreased trend in wetland. In the seasonal manner, the nutrient concentrations were high in the winter dry season, however, the organic matter concentrations were high in spring and summer. Generally, the concentrations of phytoplankton value were $40{\mu}g\;chl-{\alpha}/L$ or less in all reaches except for the high concentrations in the weir and wetland area in June.

  • Microphysogobio koreensis, an endemic Korean freshwater fishes belonging to Cyprinidae, is protected as a 2nd grade of endangered fishes by the ministry of the Environment. For this species, the study on the spawning microhabitat including structure of streambed and spawning grounds was carried out. The streambed that this species mainly lives consists of boulders, cobbles, and pebbles, the so-called Bb type, with a depth of 0.3 to 1.0 m and a rapid velocity of $0.5{\pm}0.2$ m/sec. But the main spawning grounds where the spawning is actually occurring, is relatively shallower, $0.4{\pm}0.1$ (0.4~0.6) m depth, and faster, $0.8{\pm}0.1$ (0.6~0.9) m/sec velocity, whereas the region that the fertilized eggs are attached are rather slowest to 0.4m/sec. The spawning starts at a water temperature of $20^{\circ}C$ in earlier May, laying their eggs on the cobbles' or boulders' surface or in between them. In particular, with a wide range of streambed structures, natural spawning grounds' environments may let the fertilized eggs not be swept from rapid current and secure efficient dissolved oxygen. The individuals, however, do not appear at the grounds any more after the spawning season, and it is expected that they may move into deeper water such as Lakes or lower streams.

  • The variations of catch of anchovy and saury due to oceanic climate change in the Korean Seas were studied. This study area was $31^{\circ}{\sim}38^{\circ}$ N and $124^{\circ}{\sim}132^{\circ}$ E. And data (seawater temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen) is used from NFRDI (National Fisheries Research and Development Institute) and SST (Sea Surface temperature) obtained to satellite images (NOAA/AVHRR) during 2000 to 2009. The spatial characteristics are analyzed by GIS (Geographic Information System). The results showed that the average of seawater temperature in the depth of 20m increased $1.45^{\circ}C$ in the South Sea and $0.83^{\circ}C$ in the East Sea, respectively. The maximal catch of anchovy was highest in summer (July~September) and winter (December~March), respectively, in compared with spring (April~June). Catch of anchovy has increased since 2000. The maximal catch of saury was highest in spring (May~June), in compared with spring (August~September). The increment of seawater temperature contributed to increase the catch of anchovy, but catch of saury was decrease in the same times.

  • The productivity of Manila clam(Ruditapes philippinarum) aquaculture farm is closely related to suitable site selection, so it is essential to assess the habitat suitable for aquaculture species in order to manage yield. This study evaluated the habitat suitable index(HSI) with 9 sites for tidal flat farm, Gochang(Hajun) on May 2014. The suitability index was selected Growth(hydrodynamics, chlorophyll a), Survival(sediment-sand, silt-clay) and Water Environment(dissolved oxygen, salinity). Both Weight and No weight were tried for objective judgment as HSI scoring method. As a result, it shows lower tidal flat(HSI; No weight: 0.60~0.76, Weight: 0.47~0.70) is higher than upper(HSI; No weight: 0.25~0.27, Weight: 0.09~0.10), hydrodynamics and sediment particle size are the most effective. This research can consider the potential suitable site for Manila clam through scientific approach, and provide the basis for optimal management practices in tidal flat farm.

  • This study investigated the environmental factors and fish assemblage in 42 wetlands between spring and autumn of 2017 to evaluate the fish distribution and deduce the management strategy for improving biodiversity in created wetlands located at the Nakdong River basin. The investigation identified a total of 30 fish species and found that the most of wetlands were dominated by exotic fishes such as Micropterus salmoides and Lepomis macrochirus. Fish species such as Rhinogobius brunneus, Opsariichthys uncirostris amurensis, Zacco platypus were less abundant in the area with high density of Micropterus salmoides (static area) because they preferred the environment with active water flow. The pattern analysis of fish distribution in each wetland using the self-organizing map (SOM) showed a total of 24 variables (14 fish species and 10 environmental variables). The comparison of variables indicated that the distribution of fish species varied according to water depth and plant cover rate and was less affected by water temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen. The plant cover rate was strongly associated with high fish density and species diversity. However, wetlands with low plant biomass had diversity and density of fish species. The results showed that the microhabitat structure, created by macrophytes, was an important factor in determining the diversity and abundance of fish communities because the different species compositions of macrophytes supported diverse fish species in these habitats. Based on the results of this study, we conclude that macrophytes are the key components of lentic freshwater ecosystem heterogeneity, and the inclusion of diverse plant species in wetland construction or restoration schemes will result in ecologically healthy food webs.
