The use of the lung assist device (LAD) would be well suited for acute respiratory failure (ARF) patients, combining the simplicity of mechanical ventilation with the ability of extracoporeal membrane oxygenators (ECMO) to provide temporary relief for the natural lungs. This study's specific attention was focused on the effect of membrane vibration in the LAD. Quantitative experimental measurements were performed to evaluate the performance of the device, and to identify membrane vibration dependence on blood hemolysis. We tried to decide upon excited frequency band of limit hemolysis when blood hemolysis came to through a membrane vibration action. The excited frequency of the module type 5, consisted of 675 hollow fiber membranes, showed the maximum gas transfer rate. We concluded that the maximum oxygen transfer rate seemed to be caused by the occurrence of maximum amplitude and the transfer of vibration to hollow fiber membranes. It was excited up to $25{\pm}5$ Hz at each blood flow rate of module type 5. We found that this frequency became the 2nd mode resonance riequency of the flexible in blood flow. Blood hemolysis was low at the excited frequency of $25{\pm}5$ Hz. Therefore, we decided that limit hemolysis frequency of this LAD was $25{\pm}5$ Hz.
In this study, we investigated effects of different packaging materials and methods on physico-characteristics of green pumpkin during storage at $10^{\circ}C$. Whole green pumpkin samples were packaged with polyvinyl chloride film (PVCF), orange coating film (OCF), paraffin film (PF), or paper with paraffin film (PWPF) and stored at $10^{\circ}C$. Weight loss, pH, firmness, browning, and gas composition ($O_2$ and $CO_2$) inside the film packages were evaluated. All characteristics of the unpackaged group (control group, CON) changed rapidly and lost marketability as compared with the packed pumpkin group. The pH values in all of the green pumpkin samples were between 6.38 and 6.67, and decreased with increased storage time. Over the storage time, all packaged pumpkin groups evidenced prevented or retarded deterioration of the green pumpkin samples in terms of appearance, texture, and discoloration. Firmness decreased slightly with increased storage time. Brown color difference were much higher in the controls than in the film-packaged green pumpkin samples, and increased rapidly in the early stages of storage. These results were attributed to reduce respiration rates as a result of elevated carbon dioxide and reduced oxygen levels in the packages. The results of this study demonstrated that the green pumpkin packaged with PWPF and PVCF showed retarded deterioration as compared to the CON, OCF and PF samples in a controlled atmosphere, and thus significant differences were noted according to the packaging material and methods used.

This study investigated the treatment of liquid waste containing highly concentrated iron(III)-ethylenediaminetetraaceticacid (Fe(III)-EDTA) of 70,000 mg/L by an underwater electrical discharge process using low voltage and high current. When AC voltage is applied to the discharging electrode with the other electrode grounded, the temperature of the liquid waste around the discharging electrode rapidly increases, and at the same time, hydrogen and oxygen gases are formed at the electrode as a result of electrochemical reactions. Ultimately, gases formed by vaporization of water and electrochemical reactions cover the electrode. Since the liquid waste is electrically conductive, it elongates the ground electrode up to the border of the gas layer, where electrical discharge occurs. Without hydrogen peroxide, electrical discharge was able to remove about 50% of Fe(III)-EDTA. As the concentration of hydrogen peroxide added increased, the removal efficiency of Fe(III)-EDTA increased. When the molar ratio of hydrogen peroxide to the initial Fe(III)-EDTA was higher than 24.7, more than 80 g of Fe(III)-EDTA was removed with an energy of 1 kWh. A comparison between tungsten and steel electrodes showed that electrode material did not affect the Fe(III)-EDTA removal. In the present underwater electrical discharge process, the removal of Fe(III)-EDTA was completed within 30 min at molar ratios of hydrogen peroxide to the initial Fe(III)-EDTA higher than 24.7.
Surface modification of PTFE by ion irradiation was performed to improve its surface properties, In the case where argon was used to irradiate the PTFE films, an increase in the adhesion strength was observed when the ion fluence was over $1\times10^{15}\;ions/cm^2$, but the surface morphology dramatically changed to a needle-shaped one. However, when we used hydrogen ions under $O_2$ environmental gas, the adhesion strength increased at an ion fluence of $5\times10^{16}\;ions/cm^2$ and the surface morphology by the hydrogen irradiation was not needle-shaped. The surface morphology and adhesion strength of the hydrogen modified PTFE was influenced by the oxygen flow rate. It was confirmed by reflectance measurements that the surface properties of the hydrogen ion irradiated PTFE were superior to those of the argon ion irradiated PTFE.
MOCVD TiN films were prepared from a new TiN precursor, tetrakis(etylmethylamino)titanium (TEMAT) and ammonia. Deposition of TiN films from a single precursor, TEMA T yielded the growth rates of $70 to 1050\AA$/min, depending on the deposition temperature. Furthermore, the excellent bottom coverage of -90% over $0.35\mu\textrm{m}$ contacts was obtained at $275^{\circ}C$. The addition of ammonia to TEMA T lowered the resistivity of as- deposited TiN film to ~ $800\mu\omega-cm$ from $3500~6000\mu\omega-cm$ and improved the stability of TiN film in air. Examination of the films by Auger electron spectroscopy(AES) showed that the oxygen and carbon contents decreased with the addition of ammonia. However, increasing ammonia flow rate decreased the bottom coverage of TiN films over $0.5\mu\textrm{m}$ contacts, probably due to the high sticking coefficient of intermediate species produced from the gas phase reaction of TEMA T and ammonia. Based on the byproduct gases detected by the quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS), the transammination reaction was proposed to be responsible for TiN deposition. In addition, XPS analysis revealed that the carbon in the films made from TEMA T and ammonia was metallic carbon, suggesting that $\beta$-hydrogen activation process occurs competitively with the transammination reaction.
Ready-to-eat chicken breasts were packaged in a multilayer, gas-tight tray with top film and various quality changes were investigated during the 24 wk of storage at $10^{\circ}C$. Over the storage period, total aerobes, mesophilic aerobic and anaerobic spore formers, and Clostridium spp. were not detected above 1.0 log CFU/g (detection limit). The residual oxygen ratio in the head space of tray and pH values tended to decrease with storage time, namely from initial values of 5.7% and 6.56 to 3.3% and 6.34 at week 24, respectively. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and volatile basic nitrogen values increased from 0.52 mg malonaldehyde (MA)/kg and 2.1 mg/100 g initially, to 3.70 mg MA/kg and 39.9 mg/100 g at week 24, respectively. In terms of the change in meat color during storage, the samples showed a slight increasing trend of CIE $a^*$, $b^*$, and ${\Delta}E$ values over the storage period until week 24 (p<0.05). The change in brine color showed a similar trend with meat of which Hunter $b^*$ and ${\Delta}E$ values increased slightly during storage during 24 wk (p<0.05). The values for the transmittance degree of brine in the samples tended to decrease. Moreover, values for the absorbance degree tended to increase with storage time until week 24. The sensory scores for color, texture, odour, and flavour were evaluated below 5.0 (marketability level) after 24 wk of storage. Based on this sensory evaluation, it could be concluded that retorted RTE chicken breast could remain marketable for at least 20 wk at $10^{\circ}C$.
It is important to identify the most suitable anesthetic agent that has minimal side effects to be able to control and perform surgeries on bears. In this study, we examined and compared the induction and recovery times as well as the physiological changes occurring during anesthesia induced by medetomidine-zolazepam/tiletamine (MZT) and xylazine-zolazepam/tiletamine (XZT) at general anesthesia for laparoscopic salpingectomy in 326 female Asiatic black bears. The body temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, and levels of PaO2 and EtCO2 were the physiological changes measured during surgical procedures in female bears after anesthesia. In addition, the levels of pO2, pCO2, and sO2 were measured using a portable blood gas analyzer. To induce recovery from anesthesia, bears anesthetized with MZT were intravenously administered atipamezole and bears anesthetized with XZT were intravenously administered yohimbine. The combination MZT, at dosages of 0.019 ± 0.001 mg/kg for medetomidine and 1.4 ± 0.1 mg/kg for ZT, or the combination XZT, at dosages of 2.0 ± 0.1 mg/kg for xylazine and 3.0 ± 0.1 mg/kg for ZT, proved to be reliable and effective in anesthetizing Asiatic black bears for a 40-min handling period for routine clinical procedures. The average anesthesia induction times were 16.5 ± 0.95 min for the bears in the MZT group and 12.0 ± 0.44 min for those in the XZT group. A significant difference was noted between the two drugs (P < 0.001) in terms of the average anesthesia induction time. The anesthesia induction time was shorter for bears with lower body weights than those with higher body weights (P < 0.05). The recovery time of MZT was significantly faster than that of XZT (11.3 ± 0.45 min vs. 18.5 ± 0.83 min) (P < .001). The bears anesthetized with MZT exhibited lower cardiopulmonary suppression than those anesthetized with XZT (P < 0.05). The body temperatures and EtCO2 of bears in the M ZT group were significantly lower than those in the XZT group as time progressed after anesthesia (P < 0.05). The average pO2 before the bears were supplied with oxygen was 64.8 ± 3.7 mmHg, but it increased to 211.5 ± 42.5 mmHg afterwards (P < 0.001). In conclusion, our results indicate that bears anesthetized with MZT have longer anesthesia induction time, shorter recovery time, slower heart and respiratory rates, and lower body temperatures and EtCO2 than those anesthetized with XZT. These findings suggest that XZT is preferable to MZT, warranting further research on its uses and clinical responses in bears.
The objectives of this study were to identify the characteristics of groundwater in the petroleum contaminated site and to evaluate the applicability of house-type landfarm facilities heated with briquette stoves in winter season. The six monitoring wells were installed at the site where pH, dissolved oxygen, and temperature were all measured. Also groundwater contaminants, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene and total petroleum hydrocarbon, were analyzed twice. House-type two landfarm facilities ($12m{\times}40m{\times}4.8m$) each installed with four briquette stoves were constructed. During four rounds treatment process, VOCs, moisture, temperature were monitored and soil contaminants were analyzed. The pH was 6.37 and considered subacid and DO was measured to be 3.12 mg/L. The temperature of groundwater was measured to be $9.48^{\circ}C$. The groundwater contaminants were detected only in the monitoring wells within the contaminated area or close to it showing that the groundwater contaminated area was similar to the soil contaminated area. During the landfarm process, 73.3% of VOCs concentration in interior gas was decreased and moisture was lowered from 17.7% to 13.4%. In the morning, at 8:00 am, the temperature was decreased showing soil ($5.5^{\circ}C$) > interior ($4.8^{\circ}C$) > exterior ($3.5^{\circ}C$). In the afternoon, at 2:00 pm, the temperature was soil ($8.6^{\circ}C$) < interior ($9.9^{\circ}C$) < exterior ($11.5^{\circ}C$) with solar radiation. The temperature difference between interior and exterior was $0.7^{\circ}C$ in the morning, but it was $1.6^{\circ}C$ in the afternoon. A total of 130 days were taken for four round landfarm processes. Each process was completed within 33 days showing 80% of cleanup efficiency ($1^{st}$ order dissipation rate(k) = 0.1771).
In this study, nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) emission concentration was measured 3 times continuously for 24 hours from August 27, 2018 to October 22, 2018 and non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) spectrometer was used to calculate $N_2O$ concentration of exhaust gas from municipal solid waste (MSW) incinerator. As a result of $N_2O$ emission characteristics, it is estimated that $N_2O$ emission concentration is due to the difference of furnace temperature, oxygen concentration rather than the chemical component of waste. The measured $N_2O$ emission concentration of MSW incinerator was obtained in the range of 53.6 ~ 59.5 ppm and the total average concentration was measured 55.6 ppm. Therefore, the amount of $N_2O$ emissions calculated from the $N_2O$ concentration was $98.05kg\;day^{-1}$ on average and the amount of $N_2O$ distribution in the range of $90.41{\sim}108.44kg\;day^{-1}$ was obtained. As a result, the $N_2O$ emission factor of the MSW incinerator was estimated to be $1,066.13g_{N_2O}\;ton_{waste^{-1}}$. The estimated $N_2O$ emission factor of the MSW incinerator was 20 times higher than calculated emission factor used in the Tier 2 method. Consequently, it is considered that the method of calculating the amount of $N_2O$ emission in the MSW incineration facilities using waste type and incineration amount needs to be supplemented to ensure accuracy.

Background: Beyond its current function as a rescue therapy in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) may be applied in ARDS patients with less severe hypoxemia to facilitate lung protective ventilation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of extended ECMO use in ARDS patients. Methods: This study reviewed 223 adult patients who had been admitted to the intensive care units of 11 hospitals in Korea and subsequently treated using ECMO. Among them, the 62 who required ECMO for ARDS were analyzed. The patients were divided into two groups according to pre-ECMO arterial blood gas: an extended group (n=14) and a conventional group (n=48). Results: Baseline characteristics were not different between the groups. The median arterial carbon dioxide tension/fraction of inspired oxygen ($FiO_2$) ratio was higher (97 vs. 61, p<0.001) while the median $FiO_2$ was lower (0.8 vs. 1.0, p<0.001) in the extended compared to the conventional group. The 60-day mortality was 21% in the extended group and 54% in the conventional group (p=0.03). Multivariate analysis indicated that the extended use of ECMO was independently associated with reduced 60-day mortality (odds ratio, 0.10; 95% confidence interval, 0.02-0.64; p=0.02). Lower median peak inspiratory pressure and median dynamic driving pressure were observed in the extended group 24 hours after ECMO support. Conclusion: Extended indications of ECMO implementation coupled with protective ventilator settings may improve the clinical outcome of patients with ARDS.
