This study conducted a sediment culture experiment to investigate the effects of sediment oxygen demand (SOD) and environmental factors on sediment and water quality. We installed a leaching tank in the laboratory, cultured it for 20 days, and analyzed the relationship between P and Fe in the sediment. As a result, the dissolved oxygen of the water layer decreased with time, while the oxidation-reduction potential of the sediment progressed in the negative direction to form an anaerobic reducing environment. The SOD was measured to be 0.05 mg/g at the initial stage of cultivation and increased to 0.09 mg/g on the 20th day, indicating the tendency of increasing consumption of oxygen by the sediment. The change is likely to have caused by oxygen consumption from biological-SOD, which is the decomposition of organic matter accumulated on the sediment surface due to the increase of chl-a, and chemical-SOD consumed when the metal-reducing product produced by the reduction reaction is reoxidized. The correlation between SOD and causality for sediment-extracted sediments was positive for Ex-P and Org-P and negative for Fe-P. The analysis of the microbial community in the sediment on the 20th day showed that anaerobic iron-reducing bacteria (FeRB) were the dominant species. Therefore, when the phosphate bonded to the iron oxide is separated by the reduction reaction, the phosphate is eluted into the water to increase the primary productivity. The reduced substance is reoxidized and contributes to the oxygen consumption of the sediment. The results of this study would be useful as the reference information to improve oxygen resin.

Persimmon peels are mostly discared as a by-product of dried persimmon manufacturing, but effective use is required as it contains various functional constituents. This study covers the preparation of carotenoid-enriched oil by ultrasound treatment of persimmon peel in soybean oil solvent, and the investigation of its physicochemical characteristics. Using the Box-Behnken design and response surface methodology, the optimal extraction conditions (temperature, 62℃; time, 32 min; and persimmon peel to oil ratio, 1:3.1) were determined based on the carotenoid concentration of the extract. The physicochemical characteristics of the extract obtained under optimal conditions and the untreated soybean oil (control) were compared. The total carotenoid content of the extract increased. The carotenoid-enriched soybean oils had a lighter color than the controls, but with high redness and yellowness values. The effect of sonication and a component of the persimmon peel on the oxidation and heating stability of soybean oil was weak. The viscosity and activation energy of carotenoid-enriched soybean oil were slightly higher than those of the control. Thus, it was possible to prepare yellow-red carotenoid-enriched soybean oil by applying ultrasonic-soybean oil solvent extraction to persimmon peel. The oil is expected to be useful as an additive as well as a substitute for general edible oils.
The soil developed from volcanic ash in Jeju Island, Korea, were classified as typical Andisols. The soils had acidic pH, high water contents, high organic matters and clay-silty textures. The crystalline minerals of the samples were mainly composed of ferromagnesian minerals such as olivine and pyroxene, and iron oxides such as magnetite and hematite derived from basaltic materials. A large amount of gibbsite was found at the subsurface horizon as a secondary product from the migration of excessive aluminum. In addition, our study has shown that considerable amounts of poorly ordered minerals like allophane and ferrihydrite were present in Jeju soils. The contents of $SiO_2$ were lower than those of other soil orders, but $A1_2O_3$ and $Fe_2O_3$ contents were higher. These results are some of the important chemical properties of Andisols. The contents of heavy metals were in the range of $84{\sim}198$ for Zn, $56{\sim}414$ for Ni, $38{\sim}150$ for Co, $132{\sim}1164\;mg\;kg^{-1}$ for Cr, which are higher than the worldwide values in most of the soils. Some soil samples contained relatively high levels of Cr exceeding 1000 mg/kg. Mean reduction capacity of the Jeju soils was $6.53\;mg\;L^{-1}$ reduced Cr(VI), 5.1 times higher than that of the non-volcanic ash soils from inland of Korea. The soil reduction capacity of the inland soils had a good correlation with total carbon content (R = 0.90). However, in spite of 20 times higher total carbon contents in the Jeju soils, there was a week negative correlation between the reduction capacity and the carbon content (R = -0.469), suggesting that the reduction capacity of Jeju soils is not mainly controlled by the carbon content and affected by other soil properties. Correlations of the reduction capacity with major elements showed that Al and Fe were closely connected with the reduction capacity in Jeju soil (R = 0.793; R = 0.626 respectively). Moreover, the amounts of Ni, Co and Cr had considerable correlations with the reduction capacity (R = 0.538; R = 0.647; R = 0.468 respectively). In particular, in relation to the behavior of redox-sensitive Cr, the oxidation of the trivalent chromium to mobile and toxic hexavalent chromium can be restricted by the high reduction capacity in Jeju soil. The factors controlling the reduction capacity in Jeju soils may have a close relation with the andic soil properties explained by the presence of considerable allophane and ferrihydrite in the soils.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of fermenting temperature on the applicability of Lactobacillus plantarum for production of fermented sausages as starter cultures, and its applicable efficiency was also compared with those inoculated with commercial starter culture or non-inoculated control. The L. plantarum isolated from a naturally-fermented meat, identified by 16S rDNA sequencing and again identified by de novo Assembly Analysis method was used as a starter culture. Six treatments: 3 with L. plantarum at different fermenting temperatures (20, 25 and $30^{\circ}C$), and other 3 treatments (1 with commercial starter culture, 1 with its mixture with L. plantarum and 1 non-inoculated control) fermented under the same conditions ($25^{\circ}C$) were prepared. Results revealed that the fermenting temperature considerably affected the pH change in samples added with L. plantarum; the highest pH drop rate (1.57 unit) was obtained on the samples fermented at $30^{\circ}C$, followed by those at $25^{\circ}C$ (1.3 unit) and $20^{\circ}C$ (0.99 unit) after 4 days fermentation. Increasing the temperature up to $30^{\circ}C$ resulted in significantly lower spoilage bacteria count (5.15 log CFU/g) and lipid oxidation level in the products inoculated with L. plantarum. The sensory analysis also showed that the samples added with L. plantarum at $30^{\circ}C$ had significantly higher odor, taste and acceptability scores than those fermented at lower temperatures. Under the same processing condition, although the L. plantarum showed slightly lower acidification than the commercial starter culture, however, it significantly improved the eating quality of the product.
This study was carried out to find the optimal operating conditions for separation of residual uranium from the simulated radwaste solution containing 19 elements, and to evaluate the validity of the process. The selected process was based on the solvent extraction with TBP(tributyl phosphate). As an extractor, two miniature mixer-settlers with a total of 18 stages were used. Extraction yield of U, Np and Tc was about 99.2%. 32.1%, and 99.9%, respectively. The other elements were coextracted in the range of 1~4%. Extraction yield of U exceeded those of the previous work performed with batch system, which resulted in the low extractability of U (about 80%) according to the coexisting element such as Nd and Fe. It was due to the characteristics of multi-stage extractor. On the other hand, low extractability of Np was caused by various oxidation states in the nitric acid medium. In the case of Tc, its high extractability may be attributed to the complex formation with Zr and U, which is not well proved yet. All elements extracted with TBP were stripped into aqueous phase more than 99% by 0.01M $HNO_3$. From the results, this process has no problem with respect to in the same step was required, because Np was distributed in the raffinate and U product, respectively.
Anammox (Anaerobic Ammonium Oxidation) bacteria is recently discovered microorganism which can oxidize ammonium to nitrogen gas in the presence of nitrite under anaerobic conditions. The anammox process can save an energy for nitrification and need not require a carbon source for denitrification, however, the start-up periods takes a long time more than several months due to the long doubling time (approximately 11 days). In order to find the effects of seeding microorganisms, hydrazine, and nitrite concentration on the enhancement of the anammox activity, five kinds of microorganisms were selected. Among the several kinds of seeding microorganisms, the granule from acclimated microorganisms treating high concentration of ammonia nitrogen (A-1) and sludge from piggery wastewater treatment plant (A-2) were found to have a high anammox activity. In the case of A-1, the maximum nitrogen conversion rate represented 0.4 mg N/L-hr, and the amount of nitrite utilization was high compared to those of other seeding microorganisms. The A-4 represented a higher nitrogen conversion rate to 0.7 mg N/L-hr although the ammonium concentration in the serum bottle was high as 200 mg/L. Meanwhile, the anaerobic granule from UASB reactor treating distillery wastewater showed a low anammox activity due to the denitrification by the remained carbon sources in the granule. Hydrazine, intermediate product in anammox reaction, enhanced the anammox activity by representing 1.4 times of nitrogen gas was produced in the test bottle than that of control, when 0.4 mM of $N_2H_4$ was added to serum bottle which contains 5 mM of nitrite. The high concentration of nitrite (10 mM) resulted in the decrease of the anammox activity by showing lower production of nitrogen gas compared to that of 5 mM addition of nitrite concentration. As a result of FISH (Florescence In-Situ Hybridization) experiment, the Amx820 probe showed a more than 13% of anammox bacteria in a granule (A-1).
In the present paper, the effect of sodium sulfite treatment on tile inhibition of browning reactions occurring in the storage of dried oyster was tested and the supplementary effect of antioxidantsaddedwasalsomentioned. Dried oysters treated with sodium sulfite solutions as described in the previous paper(Lee and Choi, 1977) were stored in the bottles with silica gel bags at room temperature with or without the application of antioxidants. The ethanol solution of an antioxidant mixture(BHA, BHT, plus, synergists) was sprayed on the surface of cooked oyster before drying. The density of brown pigment was determined spectrophotometrically by measuring the absorbance at 420 and 440 nm of both fractions of pigment extract, namely chloroform-methanol and water soluble fractions, which represent the brown color developed by fat oxidation and Maillard reactions respectively. TBA value was also measured for the oxidative rancidity in oysters during the storage. It appeared from the results that the 0.5 M sodium sulfite-60minute treated samples showed better effect after 150 day storage at room temperature. Controlling tile pH of treating solutions, did not reveal so much different in inhibitory effect in the aspect of color but a more reduction of tyrosine and reducing sugar was resulted with acidic solution than with alkaline solution. The development of brown color in dried oyster seemed to be leaded rather by the oxidative rancidity of lipids than sugar-amino reactions particularly in a long-term storage since the browning of chloroform-methanol fraction progressed more rapidly than of water. soluble fraction. The application of antioxidant, therefore, could largely retard the browning of the product as appeared in the results that sodium sulfite treated oyster with addition of antioxidant kept the best color during the storage.
Sodium nitrite which is added in processing of meat process product to develope color and to keep bacteria from growing, produces toxic substance after reacting, bring about deterioration by oxidation and toxic substance. So natural material is needed to substitute this sodium nitrite for. Chitosan which is made of chitin by processing of deacetylase, has various function of antibiosis and antimutation. We studied about the substitution effect of chitosan against sodium nitrite in pork sausage. As a result, of storing the sausage, antimicrobial effect of sodium nitrite was detected by 0.35% of chitosan(M.W. 30 kDa). This chitosan had same color developing effect even though addition content of sodium nitrite reduced until 15 ppm which is less than 1/10 of standard level. And chitosan decreased fast a residual nitrite. This result shows that chitosan inhibited a formation of nitrosamine.
Selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen monoxide by hydrogen ($H_2$-SCR of NO) over platinum catalysts impregnated on zirconia-incorporated silica ($ZrO_2-SiO_2$) and manganese oxide ($MnO_x$) was investigated. $Pt-MnO_x$ catalyst showed low conversions and low yields of $N_2O$ and $NO_2$ at $100{\sim}350^{\circ}C$. On the other hand, NO conversions over $Pt/ZrO_2-SiO_2$ were very high, but $N_2O$ was predominantly produced at $100-150^{\circ}C$ and the yield of $NO_2$ increased with temperature at $200-300^{\circ}C$, resulting in poor $N_2$ yields. $Pt-MnO_x/ZrO_2-SiO_2$ exhibited a small enhancement in $N_2$ yield at $100-150^{\circ}C$ due to the synergy of $MnO_x$ and $ZrO_2-SiO_2$. The surface composition and oxidation state of the catalyst components and the acidity of the catalysts were examined. IR spectra of the adsorption of NO and their subsequent reactions with hydrogen on these catalysts were also recorded. The variations of conversion and product yield according to the catalyst components in the $H_2$-SCR of NO were discussed in relation to their catalytic roles.
Several main nuclides($^{241}Am$, $^{152}Eu$ and $^{237}Np$) in radioactive waste solution were selected and examined to mutual separation with di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid by solvent extraction technique. $^{237}Np$ was extracted more than 99.9% adding the $H_2O_2$ that was a good reductant for the oxidation state control of $^{237}Np$. $^{241}Am$, $^{152}Eu$ and $^{237}Np$ could be fairly well separated one another during the different sequence stripping stages, but about 7~9.6% of the other nuclides were still remained for the $^{241}Am$ stripping solution. This result shows that the product of $^{152}Eu$ and $^{237}Np$ was good, but $^{241}Am$ may be needed to further purification process. It was also discussed on the cause of the third phase formation phenomenon that was found in the solvent regeneration.
