Electrorheology of conducting polyaniline-$BaTiO_3$ composite

  • Organic-inorganic composite of polyaniline and barium titanate (PANI-$BaTiO_3$) was synthesized via an in-situ oxidation polymerization of aniline in the presence of barium titanate ($BaTiO_3$) nanoparticles dispersed in an acidic medium. Barium titanate has large electric resistance and relatively high dielectric constant which is one of the essential properties for its electrorheological (ER) applications. The microstructure and composition of the obtained PANI/$BaTiO_3$ composite were characterized by SEM, FT-IR and XRD. In addition, we also employed a rotational rheometer to investigate the rheological performance of the ER fluids based on both pure PANI particle and PANI/$BaTiO_3$ composite. It was found that the composite materials possess much higher yield stresses than the pristine PANI due to unique dielectric properties of the inorganic $BaTiO_3$ particles. Finally, we also examined dynamic yield stress by analyzing its extrapolated yield stress data as a function of electric field strengths. Using the critical electric field strengths deduced, we further found that the universal yield stress equation collapses their data onto a single curve.

  • Aluminium and its alloys are widely used in brazing various components in automotive industries due to their properties like lightweight, excellent ductility, malleability and formability, high oxidation and corrosion resistance, and high electrical and thermal conductivity. However, high machinability and strength of aluminium alloys are a serious concern during casting operations. The generation of porosity caused by dissolved gases and modifiers affects seriously the strength and quality of cast product. Brazing of Al and its alloys requires careful monitoring of temperature since theses alloys are brazed at around the melting temperature in most of the aluminium alloys. Therefore, the development of low temperature brazing filler alloys as well as superior strength Al alloys for various engineering applications is always in demand. In various heat exchangers and automotive applications, poor strength of Al alloys is due to the inherent porosities and casting defects. The unstable mechanical properties is therefore needed to be controlled by adding various additive elements in the aluminium and its alloys, by a change in the heat treatment procedure or by modifying the microstructure. In this regard, this article reports the effect of various elements added in aluminium alloys to improve microstructure, brazeability, machinability, castability as well as to stabilize the mechanical properties.

Thermal Cycling Oxidation Resistance of Carbon Fiber-Phenolic and Stabilized PAN Fiber-Phenolic Composites (탄소섬유-페놀수지 및 안정화 PAN섬유-페놀수지 복합재료의 열주기 산화저항)

  • 폴리아크릴로나트릴(PAN)계 탄소섬유 및 안정화 PAN섬유를 사용하여 제조한 페놀수지 복합재료의 열주기 산화저항성에 섬유표면의 인산코팅 유.무가 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 각 복합재료의 열주기 산화저항성은 열중량분석기의 원리를 응용하여, 공기중에서 hot zone과 cold zone을 주기적으로 반복이동하는 열충격조건에 노출되면서 초래되는 복합재료의 중량변화를 측정하여 비교하였다. 시험변수로는 hot zone에 노출된 온도, 시간 및 싸이클횟수를 선정하였다. 이 시험방법은 비교적 단순하며, 작은 크기의 시편으로도 가능하고, 중량변화가 온-라인 모니터에서 직접 감지되므로 데이타의 신뢰성이 \ulcorner다. 각 시험조건에서 인산코팅한 섬유를 사용한 복합재료가 그렇지 않은 재료보다 고온에서의 높은 산화저항성 때문에 우수한 열주기저항성을 보여 주었다. 또한 인산코팅의 존재 여부가 열주기시험 후의 탄소섬유-페놀수지 및 안정화 PAN섬유-페놀수지 복합재료의 미세구조에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다.

  • 탄소-탄소 복합체는 가벼우면서 고온에서도 강도의 저하가 적은 특성을 가지고 있어 터빈 블레이드 소재, 우주왕복선의 내열타일 등 광범위 한 고온재료로 응용이 이루어지고 있거나 기대되는 소재이다. 그러나 고온 산화분위기에서 쉽게 산화되는 단점이 있어 이러 한 산화특성을 향상시키는 방법으로 SiC, Si$_3$N$_4$ 등 내산화 저항성이 우수한 재료를 탄소-탄소 복합체 위에 코팅하는 연구가 행해지고 있다. 하지만 이들 코팅층과 탄소-탄소 복합체간의 열팽창계수 차이에 의한 열응력 발생으로 코팅층에 균열이 발생한다. 따라서 탄소-탄소 복합체와 코팅층간의 열응력을 최소화하여 균열 발생을 억제하기 위해 기능경사재료 (Functionally Graded Material, FGM)를 중간층으로 도입하는 방법이 최근 활발히 연구되고 있다. FGM 중간충의 형성방법 중 화학기상증착법 (CVD)은 증착물의 조성이나 미세구조 조절이 용이한 방법으로 알려져 있어 최근 CVD법에 의한 FGM층의 형성에 많은 연구가 진행되고 있지만, 지금까지 CVD법을 이용한C/SiC FGM 중간충의 형성 연구결과에서는 모든 조성비의 C/SiC층의 증착과 치밀한 구조를 지닌 증착층을 얻기가 어려워 체계적인 연구의 진행이 어려웠다.

  • The advantage of plasma-sprayed coating is their good resistance against thermal shock due to the porous state of the coated layer with a consequently low Youngs modulus. However, the existence of many pores with a bimodal distribution and a laminar structure in the coating reduces coating strength and oxidation protection of the base metals. In order to counteract these problems, there have been many efforts to obtain dense coatings by spraying under low pressure or vacuum and by controlling particle size and morphology of the spraying materials. The aim of the present study is to survey the effects of the HIP treatment between 1100 and 130$0^{\circ}C$ on plasma-sprayed oxide coating of A1$_2$O$_3$, A1$_2$O$_3$-SiO$_2$on the metal substrate (type C18N10T stainless steel). These effects were characterized by phase identification, Vickers hardness measurement, and tensile test before and after HIPing. These results show that high-pressure treatment has an advantage for improving adhesive strength and Vickers hardness of plasma-sprayed coatings.

  • 천연가스 수송배관은 매설환경시의 방식 및 외부충격 등에 대비하여 배관을 보호할 목적으로 폴리에틸렌(polyethylene)으로 피복(coating)되어 있다. 가스배관이 전국으로 확장됨과 더불어 배관피복 기술도 초기 사용하던 1층(one-layer), 2층피복으로 발전되어 현재는 3층피복시스템을 적용한 배관들이 전국에 매설되고 없다. 그러나 강관에 적용된 폴리에틸렌 피복이 경우에 따라 장기간 사용에 따른 자연균열등이 발생하여 피복의 안정성에 문제를 일으키기도 하므로, 그동안 전국에 매설되어있는 배관 피복재들의 물성변화 여부를 확인하여 천연가스수송용 배관의 내성 데이터베이스를 구축, 향후 배간운영의 신뢰성 평가에 참고하고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 선진외국에서 폴리에틸렌 배관의 내구성과 장기사용 안정성 평가를 위해 오래전부터 활용되고 있는 저속균열저항성(slow crack growth resistance : SCGR) 측정과 배관 피복층의 산화유도시간(OIT : oxidation induction time)을 측정하여 국내 배관 피복재들의 내구성을 평가하고 이를 근거로 하여 국내사용판정에 적합하고 수출도 고려한 폴리에틸렌 물성치의 목표값을 제안하였다.

Microstructures and Mechanical Properties of $TiC-Ni_3Al$ Cermet ($TiC-Ni_3Al$ Cermet의 미세조직과 기계적성질)

  • Ni$_3$Al intermetallic compound has been tested as a binder phase, in order to improve the oxidation resistance and the mechanical properties of TiC-Ni cermet at a high temperature. The wettability of $Ni_3Al$ on TiC and the optimum sintering condition were investigated in TiC-(30, 40) vol% $Ni_3Al$ cermets with the sintering temperature (1380~$1430^{\circ}C$) and time (30~99 min). The results are summarized as follows: 1) Ni$_3$Al showed good wettability on TiC above 1400$^{\circ}C$ ; 2) The shrinkages of the specimens increased with the sintering temperature, the sintering time and the binder content, whereas the relative densities were decreased; 3) Any other phase did not appeared in the microstructures of all sintered cermets. The grain sizes of TiC became larger as the sintering temperature and the sintering time as well as the binder content increased; 4) The hardness of the cermets decreased with increase in the sintering temperature and the sintering time as well as the binder content; 5) The transverse-rupture strength of the cermets increased with the sintering temperature and the sintering time, whereas it decreased with the binder content.

Optimization of the Phosphorus Doped BSF Doping Profile and Formation Method for N-type Bifacial Solar Cells

  • n-type PERT (passivated emitter, rear totally diffused) bifacial solar cells with boron and phosphorus diffusion as p+ emitter and n+ BSF (back surface field) have attracted significant research interest recently. In this work, the influences of wafer thickness, bulk lifetime, emitter, BSF on the photovoltaic characteristics of solar cells are discussed. The performance of the solar cell is determined by using one-dimensional solar cell simulation software PC1D. The simulation results show that the key role of the BSF is to decrease the surface doping concentration reducing the recombination and thus, increasing the cell efficiency. A lightly phosphorus doped BSF (LD BSF) was experimentally optimized to get low surface dopant concentration for n type bifacial solar cells. Pre-oxidation combined with a multi-plateau drive-in, using limited source diffusion was carried out before pre-deposition. It could reduce the surface dopant concentration with minimal impact on the sheet resistance.

  • The nickel-based alloy Nimonic 80A possesses strength, and corrosion, creep and oxidation resistance at high temperature. These products are used for aerospace, marine engineering and power generation, etc. The control of forging parameters such as strain, strain rate, temperature and holding time is important because the microstructure change in hot working affects the mechanical properties. It is necessary to understand the microstructure variation evolution. The microstructure change evolution occurs by recovery, recrystallization and grain growth phenomena. The dynamic recrystallization evolution has been studied in the temperature range $950-1250^{\circ}C$ and strain rate range $0.05-5s^{-1}$ using hot compression tests. The metadynamic recrystallization and grain growth evolution has been studied in the temperature range $950-1250^{\circ}C$ and strain rate range 0.05, $5s^{-1}$, holding time range 5, 10, 100, 600 sec using hot compression tests. Modeling equations are developed to represent the flow curve, recrystallized grain size, recrystallized fraction and grain growth phenomena by various tests. Parameters of modeling equation are expressed as a function of the Zener-Hollomon parameter. The modeling equation for grain growth is expressed as a function of initial grain size and holding time.

Study on Micro Wire Straightening Process in SUS 304 (SUS 304 마이크로 와이어 직선화 처리에 관한 연구)

  • In the study, we have developed a straightening system for 304 micro wires that are normally used in the medical and semi-conductor fields. To apply heat to the micro wires, we introduced the direct wire heating method which generates the thermal energy by the electrical resistance of the wire itself. To avoid the deterioration of the wire surface by the environment, such as the oxidation or the hydration, the $N_2$ gas was filled in the glass pipe in which the straightening process was being performed. A precision tension meter was also attached to control the tension of the wire during the heating and straightening process. In order to control the straightening process, several experimental investigations with varying the tension, the feeding velocity and the temperature (current) was carried out. As a result of experiments, we obtained the optimal processing conditions satisfying the straightness requirement of the micro wires.
