In this paper, we describe a portable potentiostat which is capable of cyclic voltammetry(CV) and amperometry for electrochemical dissolved oxygen sensor. In addition, this portable potentiostat can also transmit the measured data wirelessly to android devices such as smart phone, tablet, etc. through Bluetooth. The potentiostat system consists of three parts; a voltage generator circuit which is controlled by Arduino nano and 12-bit DAC(digital to analog converter) to generate necessary electric potential for operating the electrochemical sensor, an oxidation/reduction current measurement circuit, and a Bluetooth module to transmit data wirelessly to an android device. Once measurements are carried out with the android application, the measured data is transmitted to the android device via Bluetooth and displayed using the android app. in real time. In this paper, we report the measured reduction current with a fabricated dissolved oxygen sensor in both saturated-oxygen state and zero-oxygen states. The results of the developed portable potentiostat system are in good agreement with those of the commercial portable potentiostat (${\mu}stat200$, Dropsens inc.). The measured peak reduction currents using the developed potentiostat and the commercial ${\mu}stat200$ potentiostat were $-0.755{\mu}A$ and $-0.724{\mu}A$, respectively. The reduction currents measured at zero-oxygen state were $-0.005{\mu}A$ and $-0.004{\mu}A$. The discrepancy between those two systems seems very small, which implies successful development of a portable and wireless potentionstat.

Nanoscale zero valent iron (nZVI) has been intensively studied for the treatment of a plethora of pollutants through reductive reaction, however, the nano size should be of concern when nZVI is considered for water treatment, due to difficulties in recovery. The loss of nZVI causes not only economical loss, but also potential risk to human health and environment. Thus, the immobilization onto coarse or structured support is essential. In this study, two representative processes for nZVI immobilization on granular activated carbon (GAC) were evaluated, and optimized conditions for synthesizing Fe/GAC composite were suggested. Both total iron content and $Fe_0$ content can be significantly affected by preparation processes, therefore, it was important to avoid oxidation during preparation to achieve higher reduction capacity. Synthesis conditions such as reduction time and existence of intermediate drying step were investigated to improve $Fe_0$ content of Fe/GAC composites. The optimal condition was two hours of $NaBH_4$ reduction without intermediate drying process. The prepared Fe/GAC composite showed synergistic effect of the adsorption capability of the GAC and the degradation capability of the nZVI, which make this composite a very effective material for environmental remediation.
There are two treatment processes that are currently applied to ships are the biological treatment process using the activated sludge and the electrochemical treatment. However, neither of them are able to remove both nitrogen and phosphorus due to their limited ability to remove organic matters, which are main causes of the red tide. This study was conducted to identify the characteristics of nitrogen removal factors from manure wastewater by replacing the final settling tank in SBR (Sequencing Batch Reactor) process and applying immersion type hollow fiber membrane. SBR process is known to have an advantage of the least land requirement in special environment such as in ship and the immersion type hollow fiber membrane is more stable in water quality change. As the result, the average in the cases of DO (Dissolved Oxygen) is 2.9(0. 6~3.9) mg/L which was determined to be the denitrifying microorganism activity in anaerobic conditions. The average in the cases of ORP (Oxidation Reduction Potential) is 98.4~237.3 mV which was determined to be the termination of nitrification since the inflection point was formed on the ORP curve due to decrease in the stirring treatment after the aeration, same as in the cases of DO. Little or no variation in the pH was determined to have positive effect on the nitrification. T-N (Total Nitrigen) removal efficiencies of the finally treated water were 71.4%, 72.3% and 66.5% in relatively average figures, thus was not a distinct prominence. In being applied in ships in the future, the operating conditions and structure improvements are deemed necessary since the MEPC (Marine Environment Protection Committee). 227(64) ship sewage nitrogen is less than the standard of 20 Qi/Qe mg/L or the removal rate of 70%.
Changes of soil properties due to sedimentation and erosion in the river estuary may lead changes in environmental factors that affect plant growth and distribution, Then habitats in the river estuary that provide various ecological functions can also be influenced. Topsoil samples were analyzed in order to understand the soil properties of important barrier islands and habitat types in the Nakdong river estuary. The samples were obtained from Phragmites communis and Scirpus planiculmis habitats, the tidal flats in the southern area of Eulsukdo, and in Mangeummerydeung, Baekhapdeung, and Doyodeung. Analyses results showed that bulk density, pH, organic matter content and total nitrogen concentration which were directly or indirectly affected by vegetation showed significant difference (p<0.05) with habitat types but no differences in water content and oxidation reduction potential which could be affected by soil texture and showed significant difference among barrier islands. Results suggested that soil properties on barrier islands in the Nakdong river estuary were influenced first by geomorphic changes due to sedimentation and erosion, and then by the presence or type of vegetation. A range of physical and chemical properties were analyzed; soil water content and bulk density (physical properties), and organic content and pH (chemical properties) were correlated with seven other soil properties, at a level of significance higher than 90%. These aspects played an important role in determining overall soil properties in the studied area.
Strong alkaline electrolyzed water which is produced in cathode by electrolyzing the solution where electrolytes (NaCl, $K_2CO_3$ etc.) are added in diaphragm electrolytic cell, is eco-friendly and has cleaning effects. So, it is viewed as a substitution of chemical cleaner. In addition, strong alkaline electrolyzed water is being used by some Japanese automobile and precision parts manufacturing industries. When strong alkaline electrolyzed water is produced by using diaphragm electrolytic cell, it is necessarily produced at the anode side. Since strong acidic electrolyzed water produced is discarded when its utilization cannot be found, production efficiency of electrolyzed water is consequently decreased. Also, there is a weakness electrolytic efficiency is decreasing due to the pollution of diaphragm. In order to overcome this, non-diaphragm all-in-one electrolytic cell integrated with electrode reaction chamber and dilution chamber was applied. Strong alkaline electrolyzed water was produced for different composition of electrolytes, and their properties and characteristics were identified. In comparing the properties between strong alkaline electrolyzed water produced in diaphragm electrolytic cell and that produced in all-in-one electrolytic cell, the differences in ORP and chlorine concentration were found. In emulsification test to confirm surface-active capability, similar results were obtained and strong alkaline electrolyzed water produced in non-diaphragm all-in-one electrolytic cell was identified to be useable as a cleaner like strong alkaline electrolyzed water produced in diaphragm electrolytic cell. Strong alkaline electrolyzed water produced in non-diaphragm all-in-one electrolytic cell is thought to have sterilizing power because it has active chlorine which is different from strong alkaline electrolyzed water produced in diaphragm electrolytic cell.
The suitable paddy soil for application of rice straw under well to moderately well drained soil, the yield and yield components were pronounced more than poorly drained soil. Based on laboratory experiment, application of rice straw promoted the decrease of oxidation-reduction potential in well to moderately well drained soil. This results seems to be enhanced the release of some mineral nutrients such as calcium, potassium, silicon, and increases of availability of soil phosphorus. This explains reason why soil condition became more favorable for the increases of mineral nutrient in rice plant. On the contrary, poorly drained soils, became readily reduced even without application or rice straw, when soil wat submerged. Application of rice straw did not promoted the decrease of oxidation-reduction potential as much as in well drained soil. It was suggested that in this type of soil series, the release of mineral nutrients and the additional increase of available soil phosphorus did not proceed well. It was also suggested that the retardation of root development owing to accumulation of toxic substances such as organic acid, hydrogen sulfide or some other reducing substances formed by the application of rice straw in poorly drained soil series might be considered. In fact, the effect of rice straw on the yield of brown rice became lower.

We carried out basic research to evaluate covering material for improving and managing contaminated benthic environments in coastal areas. Changes in nutrient concentration such as phosphate, hydrogen sulfide of contaminated sediment, and pH, Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP) were investigated through mesocosm experiments for 6 months by covering contaminated sediment with granulated coal ash. Calcium oxide eluted from the granulated coal ash was confirmed to neutralize acidified sediment by increasing pH through hydrolysis. Also, calcium oxide and silica eluted from the granulated coal ash adsorbed and precipitated with phosphate in the sediment. The concentration of phosphate in the sediment investigated decreased by ca. 84.31 %. Similarly, the concentration of hydrogen sulfide decreased by 133.5 mg/L in one month. The hydrogen sulfide is considered to have reacted with substances such as manganese oxide which were eluted from the granulated coal ash and precipitated. Also, it was concluded that the hydrogen sulfide was reduced since anaerobic conditions in the sediment weakened. According to the results of these mesocosm experiments, granulated coal ash was found to be effective to remediate and manage benthic environments by covering the surface layer of sediment.

The purpose of this paper is to etching SUS MASK by adding an additive (F300) to FeCl3. The equipment used in the experiment is a self-made automatic liquid management system. The automatic liquid management system is a device capable of controlling the Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP) and specific gravity in real time and supplying FeCl3 and additives in a quantitative manner. SUS MASK was etched in units from 10 sheets up to 200 sheets for 1 minute. It was confirmed that when the initial SUS MASK was 10 sheets, the ORP value started with 628 mV and measured at 611 mV from the time of 40 sheets being injected, and maintained close to 610 mV up to 200 sheets. The specific gravity was maintained near 1.640. And the SUS MASK was measured close to 0.4 mm from 50 sheets to 200 sheets. The experimental conditions of ORP had a specific gravity of 610 mV, 1.463, an etching pressure of 3.0 kg/cm2, an additive (F300) ratio of 1.2%, and the hole size was measured by up to 200 sheets of 10 sheets at once etching. As a result, the diameter approached 0.4 mm from 20 sheets. Even if the number of SUS MASK was increased, the ORP and specific gravity were well controlled, and it was confirmed that the experimental target value was close to 0.4 mm.
Characterization and classification of the potential acid sulfate soils found on flood-plains in Yeongnam area were summarized as follows: 1. The "Potential acid sulfate soil" layer(s) were appeared in the around 2-4m substrata of soil profiles and characterized by the fine texture, high reduction and physical unripened soft mud deposits or having higher contents of organic matter with dark color. 2. The contents of total sulfur (T-S) in those soils were ranged around 0.45-0.9% and the materials exhibited a strong acidity upon the oxidation with $H_2O_2$. Although the T-S contents was low as much as 0.15%, the sulfidic materials were also acidified strongly by the oxidation with $H_2O_2$ in the condition of lower content of carbonates. As defined in Soil Taxonomy of USDA, most of the sulfidic materials contained less than 3 times carbonate ($CaCO_3$ equivalent wt. %), but there were some which abundant in shell fragments, contained more than 3 times carbonate by weight percentage and that not much acidified by the oxidation with $H_2O_2$. 3. The contents of T-S correlated negatively with the pH oxidized by $H_2O_2$ and with the fizzing time (minutes) due to addition of $H_2O_2$. 4. The potential acid sulfate soils could be defined as soil materials that had sulfidic layer(s) more than 20cm thick within 4m of the soil profile and contained more than 0.15% of T-S with less than 3 times carbonate ($CaCO_3$ equiv. %). A tentative interpretative soil classification system was proposed, i.e., "Weak potential acid sulfate (T-S, 0.15-0.5%)", "Moderate potential acid sulfate (T-S, 0.5-0.75%)", and "Strong potential acid sulfate (T-S, more than 0.75%)". Finally, it was proposed that the "Detailed soil survey with high intensity" should be carried out in the areas of agricultural engineering works such as arableland readjustment works, in advance.
The increase in P availability to rice under flooded soil conditions involves the reductive dissolution of iron phosphate and iron (hydr)oxide phosphate. However, since $NO_3^-$ is a more favourable electron acceptor in anaerobic soils than Fe, high$NO_3^-$ loads function as a redox buffer limiting the reduction of Fe. The effect of adding $NO_3^-$ on Fe reduction and P release in paddy soil was investigated. Pot experiment was conducted where $NO_3^-$ was added to flooded soil and changes of redox potential and $Fe_2^+$, $NO_3^-$ and $PO_4^{3-}$ concentrations in soil solution at 10 cm depth were monitored as a function of time. Redox potential decreased with time to -96 mV, but it was temporarily poised at about 330${\sim}$360 mV when $NO_3^-$ was present. Nitrate addition to soil led to reduced release of $Fe_2^+$ and prevented the solubilization of P. Phosphate in pore water began to rise soon after incubation and reached final concentrations about 0.82 mg P/L in the soil without $NO_3^-$ addition. But, in the soil with $NO_3^-$ addition, $PO_4^{3-}$ in pore water was maintained in the range of 0.2${\sim}$0.3 mg P/L. The duration of inhibition in $Fe_2^+$ release was closely related to the presence of $NO_3^-$, and the timing of $PO_4^{3-}$ release was inversely related to the $NO_3^-$ concentration in soil solution. The results suggest that preferential use of $NO_3^-$ as an electron acceptor in anaerobic soil condition can strongly limit Fe reduction and P solubilization.
